The War of the Five Kings

Introduction
Welcome back to Westeros. With HBO's House of the Dragon well underway, the time is ripe for another journey into the world of George R.R. Martin.

In this RP, we will be exploring Westeros from the very beginning, all the way back in 298 AC. King Robert Baratheon sits on the Iron Throne, overseeing a troubled Realm. Eddard Stark, the Hand of the King, has picked up the trail left by his predecessor Lord Jon Arryn of the Eyrie, investigating a secret so troubling, its reveal could cause the entire realm to shake. As Robert continues to hunt, drink, and whore himself into an early grave, the pieces are moving and the board is set for an epic confrontation. Thus, through this RP, you will take on a myriad of possible roles, from Lord Paramount of one of the Seven Kingdoms, to a lowly hedge knight or sworn shield, a foreign pirate or begging brother, a Maester or reaver from the Iron Islands. All possibilities are available. With any luck, this RP will come to a conclusion that is more satisfying, and more enjoyable, than what we received all the way back in 2019.

Premise and Rules
This RP takes place in 298 AC, some time after the death of Jon Arryn, but prior to the execution of Eddard Stark. The beginning of the IC will take place right after the Hands Tourney, as Stark is starting to recognize just exactly what is going on in King's Landing. Catelyn has yet to capture Tyrion. This is a critical point in the narrative, and how the players react to unfolding events, hopefully differently than the books, will inform how the RP progresses.

Given the centrality of the capital, I am willing to be lenient as to the location of characters. For example, if one is playing the Tully's, it is entirely reasonable to think that Edmure could begin the RP in King's Landing as an attendee of the Hand's Tourney. However, we must not stuff one location with all our active characters. Please consider your justifications for altering a character's starting location carefully.

This RP is a sandbox style, character driven RP. This means that you can choose to play as anyone, from a King to a peasant, but must remain cognizant of what your role entails. Character interaction will be at the crux of the RP; nation-building, army management, battles, and all the more overtly strategic considerations will be of importance but will not be central. You are expected to be playing a character, not a kingdom.

Given that consideration, the characters that are available have set personalities. There are certain actions that would not do, and certain actions that they must. For instance, whomever plays Stannis is expected to at the very least approach issues as Stannis might; it would be silly to have him bend the knee without fighting for his claim, for instance. This ensures that the RP does fit the world that we have set it in.

This focus on character interaction does present us with an issue, namely, how do we resolve wars, plots or duels? Well, we plan ahead and we look at the lore. If one player is Edmure Tully, and the other Jaime Lannister, any combat between the two is expected to be pre-scripted, discussed by each player before hand. In this instance, Jaime, the obviously superior swordsman, should be accepted as the winner by bother players. A similar situation goes for large battles, which must take into account army quality, supply, positioning, commanders and other factors. In an instance where there is an inability to come to an agreement, an OP will look at the case and make a ruling.

Character deaths is also a critical aspect of ASOIAF, and must be accepted by players who make mistakes. If the character playing Eddard Stark remains in King's Landing for too long, it is highly likely he will be put on the same path as his book counterpart. If a player allows their character to be captured, for instance, they are at the mercy of another player. Discussion should occur as to what would be the most fun and interesting way to proceed.

All in all, I want this to be a character centric RP, and that means communicating with other players.

Moving on to the hard and fast rules;

1. Standard site rules apply, in particular metagaming, Godmodding etc. You should know the drill. If you do not, this RP is probably not for you.
2. Accept the OP or Co-Ops rulings. Dissent is fine but their word goes.
3. Be realistic and write well. One liners are a big no-no, as are unrealistic story arcs or events. If you are marching an army to Winterfell from Sunspear, its going to take a while.
4. Accept that you will make mistakes and may lose or even die.
5. Consult with the ASOIAF wiki and make sure you know your way around the Lore.
6. Activity is important; if you are going to be off for a period longer than a couple of days, please let us know.
7. Everything East of the Free Cities is off limits. Essosi characters are fine, but they will likely be limited in what they can do. This is a Westeros centric RP. This also means that both Daenerys Targaryen and Aegon VI are non-playable.

The Applications
Applications are very important; they let me judge your ability to write and to play the character you want. If you are rejected from the RP for reasons of quality, please do not take it personally. This RP is meant to hit a certain standard of writing and some people just are not there yet, there is no shame in that. Likewise, if your application is rejected on technical issues, please simply address them and reapply.

You may make a custom House, but, and this is a big but, you may not displace another House in terms of land or titles, and you must not be particularly powerful or wealthy. Custom Houses will be subject to rigorous review before being accepted.

When writing the application, keep in mind you only need to make a character sheet for your primary character. For example, if one wants to play as House Lannister, you would write the character application for Tywin. If another player would later on want to apply for Cersei, they would make the application for her, taking into consideration any events that had occurred over the course of the RP. If you want to RP as a character in another House that is already being played (ie. Cersei in this instance) please discuss this with the other player. If they do not want to give up that character, please pick another.

Final Notes
We were all disappointed by GOT's 8th Season. I made this RP because, having gone through the books again for the umpteenth time, I think its time to revisit ASOIAF and see if we can redeem it and make a better story than what we ended up with.

Military Strength: Estimates place the entire strength of Dorne to be around 25,000 men. Outsiders have been misled about Dornish strength, and those who do not know any better commonly claim that this number is in fact 50,000 men.
House History: House Martell was founded by Morgan Martell, an Andal adventurer who carved out a small realm along the banks of the Greenblood for him and his descendants. The Martells did not rule on their own; they served for many years as vassals to greater Houses of the region including Houses Allyrion, and Yronwood. In this state, they were a fairly unimportant family when the Rhoynar fled Essos. Nymeria's arrival in Dorne presented Lord Mors Martell an opportunity; their marriage united the Rhoynish and Dornish peoples, creating the House of Nymeros Martell, and greatly strengthening their position in Eastern Dorne. Through Nymeria's War, House Nymeros Martell conquered their former lieges and united all of Dorne under their rule.

The influx of Rhoynar into Dorne caused great demographic change, with many Andal customs being discarded in favour of Rhoynar traditions. For instance, House Nymeros Martell rules Dorne as Princes, not Kings, and female family members were treated as equals to their male counter parts in terms of inheritance. This has led to Dorne having several ruling Princesses compared to the male dominant Houses of Westeros.

Dorne resisted the conquests of House Targaryen, defying Aegon himself and many of his heirs. Daeron I died in the sands of Dorne, as did thousands of Westerosi knights and aristocrats. Utilizing guerilla warfare, Dornish independence was secured from House Targaryen and the Iron Throne. In this time, enmity between Dorne and the neighbouring realms of the Reach and Stormlands continued. Dorne was eventually incorporated into the Seven Kingdoms peacefully with the marriage of Daeron II Targaryen to Myriah Nymeros Martell, as Daeron and the incumbent Prince of Dorne negotiated a settlement whereby Dorne was given special rights and privileges in exchange for bending the knee to the Iron Throne.

After this point, House Nymeros Martell proved to be loyal to House Targaryen, siding with them through the Blakfyre Rebellions and standing by their side in Robert's Rebellion. The death of Elia Nymeros Martell and her two Targaryen children during the sack of King's Landing drove a wedge between Dorne and the rest of the Seven Kingdoms. Dorne's antipathy towards the Lannister's in particular was evident, and some Targaryen sympathizers even tried to raise their banners for the now exiled Prince Viserys. Since the Rebellion, avenging Elia's murder has become a preoccupation for every member of House Nymeros Martell

Personality: Cautious and subtle, Prince Doran is an intelligent and cunning man. He is quiet and collected, patient, and devoted to his family. He is a master schemer and manipulator. He prefers to spend considerable time planning his moves and dislikes rash or emotional responses. No warrior, he is quite the ruler.

Character Biography: Doran was the first born child of his parents, and thus heir to his mother, the Princess of Dorne. For years, he was an only child, as his mother had several miscarriages. While he would have four siblings, Mors and Olyvar, both died in the cradle. Doran spent several years of his childhood at the Water Gardens, and by the age of nine, he was a squire to Lord Gargalen at Salt Shore. While there, his mother gave birth to his sister, Elia. As Elia had been born one month premature, Doran was convinced that his sister too would die, as their brothers had done before, but she survived. A year later, Doran's brother Oberyn was born.

As a young man, Doran took a tour through the Free Cities. He visited Volantis and next went to Norvos, where he met his future wife, Lady Mellario. They fell in love and Mellario returned to Dorne with Doran, where they were betrothed and would soon after marry. Areo Hotah escorted Mellario and entered the service of House Martell. In 273 AC, when his mother, her consort, and Doran's two younger siblings traveled through the south of Seven Kingdoms on a quest to find suitable matches for Elia and Oberyn, Doran stayed behind as castellan of Sunspear, with Mellario. Although Mellario was highborn enough to become his wife, most marriages between nobles in Westeros are political. A love match is very uncommon. In 276 AC, Doran and Mellario's first child, Arianne, was born. Around 279 AC, Doran inherited the rule of Dorne.

An unknown amount of time after his siblings had traveled to find suitable marriage candidates, Doran's brother Oberyn fought in a duel with Lord Edgar Yronwood. Due to Oberyn's high birth and young age, the two men had agreed to duel until first blood. Both men were injured, but when Oberyn's cuts healed, and Edgar's festered, eventually resulting in his death, it was whispered Oberyn had fought with a poisoned blade. Doran acted swiftly, sending Oberyn into temporary exile.

Doran's sister Elia Martell was betrothed to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, the heir of King Aerys II Targaryen, in early 279 AC, and wed him a year later. She had two young children by Rhaegar, Princess Rhaenys and Prince Aegon. When Rhaegar disappeared with Lyanna Stark in 282 AC, not long after Aegon's birth, it started a chain of events leading to Robert's Rebellion, in which the north, and several houses from the Stormlands and the Vale of Arryn (later joined by several houses from the riverlands) fought against the Iron Throne and House Targaryen. Doran was furious about the way Elia had been treated by Rhaegar, and as a consequence was slow to lend any aid to the Targaryens. After Rhaegar returned from the south to King's Landing, Doran agreed to send ten thousand Dornishmen to fight in the loyalist army, under the command of his uncle, Prince Lewyn Martell of the Kingsguard, understanding that Elia, as the wife to the crown prince, would one day become queen, and that her son Aegon would one day be king.

However, Rhaegar died at the Battle of the Trident, as did Doran's uncle, Lewyn, and King Aerys, believing that Lewyn had betrayed Rhaegar on the Trident, refused to send Elia and her children to Dragonstone alongside his own wife, Queen Rhaella Targaryen, and their son Viserys. Not long after, during the Sack of King's Landing, Elia and her children were killed by Ser Gregor Clegane and Ser Amory Lorch, men from the Lannister host. The new king, Robert I Baratheon, was accepting of their deaths. As a consequence, Doran's brother Oberyn attempted to raise Dorne for the exiled Viserys during the year after the rebellion, but the new Hand of the King, Lord Jon Arryn, traveled to Sunspear to return Prince Lewyn's bones, and spoke with Doran, ending all talks of rebellion.

However, Doran desired revenge for the deaths of Elia and her children as well, and for this purpose, worked closely together with his brother Oberyn for years, planning on destroying all that Lord Tywin Lannister holds dear, before killing him as well. To this end, Oberyn traveled to Braavos, where Ser Willem Darry had fled to with Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen. A secret pact was made, with Oberyn signing for Dorne, and with the Sealord of Braavos as a witness, betrothing Doran's daughter Arianne to the exiled King Viserys.

Doran also sent his son Quentyn, born in 281 AC, to serve Lord Ormond Yronwood as a page, and later squire. Quentyn's fostering was done to make peace with the Yronwoods, as enmity between the two houses had arisen after the death of Lord Edgar Yronwood. However, this caused another strain on Doran's marriage to Mellario. Although they had married out of love, their marriage had not been very happy. Mellario had not been able to get used to the Dornish customs, which were so different from the Norvoshi customs. As such, Mellario did not approve of Quentyn's fostering, which is not common in Norvoshi culture, believing her son to be much too young at the time. When Doran, after sending Quentyn to Yronwood, planned to send Arianne to Tyrosh to serve as the cupbearer to the Archon of Tyrosh, which would have enabled her to meet her betrothed in secret, Mellario threatened to harm herself, should Doran steal another one of her children. Not wanting to hurt his wife, Doran thus kept Arianne in Dorne. Doran and his wife had a third child, Trystane, who was born in 287 AC. However, Doran and Mellario's marriage continued to deteriorate, and she would never forgive Doran for sending Quentyn away. Eventually, she went back to Norvos.

While he had planned to tell Arianne about her betrothal to the last Targaryen heir when she was sixteen, he decided to keep the secret from her due to her spirited and willful nature. Unbeknownst to Doran, however, Arianne had read a letter Doran had been writing to Quentyn, in which he mentioned that Quentyn would inherit the rule of Dorne from Doran. Thus, she had come to believe that Doran's coolness towards her was due to the fact that he wanted to disinherit her, and name Quentyn his heir instead. When Doran suggests numerous aged suitors to her (including Lord Walder Frey, Lord Ben Beesbury, Lord Gyles Rosby, and Lord Estermont), whilst declining more age-matched suitors (like Ser Edmure Tully and Willas Tyrell), it only strengthened her beliefs. In truth, Doran had feared that it would be suspicious if he was not seen trying to arrange a betrothal for Arianne, and had only made the suggestions he had because he had known she would reject every single one.

Doran eventually became afflicted with gout. In 298 AC, when still capable of walking, albeit with a stick, Doran moved from Sunspear to the Water Gardens. Two years later, however, Doran's gout has become far worse, and he is no longer able to walk, but instead is usually confined to a wheelchair. Not wanting his enemies to know how feeble he has grown, he remained at the Water Gardens, where he is far away from curious eyes. At the Water Gardens, the summer home of the Martells, he prefers to watch the children at their play, sitting quietly on the terras amongst the orange trees. He only sees his trusted courtiers and advisors, summoning his brother Oberyn twice every fortnight, and his daughter Arianne twice a year.
