I think Jackson is pretty solid on foreign policy, but when it comes to domestic affairs like the economy, taxes and civil rights. Jackson is going to lose support from some conservatives and libs in the Republican party for being too moderate/unconcerned regarding those matters. Especially if a Republican Challenger comes out swinging on these weak points pressuring for more specific concrete policy plan regarding various matters.

The proposed income tax cuts are of 20% on average and eliminate many income brackets by merging them and bringing rates down. Some see cuts of 30%+. In fact Jackson's cuts I believe (from what I read of newspaper of the time about the 1964 Republican Party platform) greater than those proposed by Goldwater. Any more might be considered too radical by general electorate and risk too alienating fiscal conservatives as they raise the prospect of too much a deficit.

the people who want to 'shrink the government' need to start being specific.

the FREE Act is intended to absorb the entire welfare state into workfare cash payments. Meaning that if you want to do cuts even larger than that, all that's really left to cut is social security, the military, R&D and education. That or you don't do the FREE act and just gut welfare, or do the FREE Act and just make the payments below the poverty line.

I mean I have another means of cutting government spending but that's really specific to the Frasers' larger political project, it's been hinted at, but never explicitly said.

I do have some specific plans/policies (speaking of myself) but will focus mainly on rhetoric. Just like with the tax proposals: I gave some specific proposals to show I have policies, but don't talk specifically in speeches. I think most voters don't want to be bored with too wonky and detailed policy plans. They will vote on candidate and rhetoric primarily.

That's Sharp's train of thought. He's hoping that if there's enough news fit enough to print, that his more controversial political actions will either be largely forgotten or swept away under the large amount of stories that keep flooding in. If someone was to really needle Sharp, hammer at his senate votes, it might make it too detrimental for Sharp to be ignoring the stories, so he'd then have to confront his past actions and put him on the defensive.
"Yes, I voted against Alaska, D.C statehood and have a political platform with points more belonging in the 19th rather than 20th centuries, but have you heard of Senator Ladhe eyyin' a NEW desk? look over there!"

Though there will be hell to pay with the President and possibly the press, since he's accused him of infidelity.

First piece of a series of 'War Progressivism' proposals Sofia going to be making. Looking for Co-sponsers. Thinking of a "service guarantees citizenship" immigration proposal next, if there is any interest in that. Just realized that Starship troopers comes out in November 1959, so it's cultural impact would be interesting in the context of an early Vietnam war.

Official Name: Federal Offering Rearing Together Intended For Youth Act

Nickname: FORTIFY Act

Overview: This legislation is intended to take the lessons from the Second World War encourage women's participation in the labor force to ease potential labor shortages from the deployment of soldiers to Vietnam and increase national productivity as is necessary for the successful prosecution of the fight against Communism in Asia.

Sponsor: Senator Sofia Fraser (R-NY)
Co-Sponsors: Representative Hubert Broussard from (D-LA's 3rd)

Section 1: The successful prosecution of the Second World War and the first defeat of totalitarianism in Europe and Asia saw an immense mobilization of men who'd normally be a part of the labor for the purpose of fighting in Europe and Asia. As a result, shortages in labor began domestically that had to be rectified by the large scale inclusion of women in the labor force, not only to produce munitions and equipment for the war effort, but the fill in for shortages in other aspects of the economy. Women's participation in the labor force however, is complicated by their dutiful commitment as homemakers. To successful prosecute this fight against communism in asia, we must take proactive measures to increase our capacity for warmaking by improving national productivity and making space for deployment of more men into combat.

Section 2: Establishes a Federal Child Care Program, providing free child care to school age children in citizen's households during and around their parent's or guardian's working hours, regardless of income, race or color.

Section 3 The Federal Child Care program is to be run by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, which will design the itinerary, procure supplies, hire staff and have the power to rent, lease, buy or build facilities for it's operations.

(a) Itinerary is intended to be complimentary with existing Federal Educational goals.
(b) The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare has control over enrollment in the program except where decisions conflict with Section 2

Section 4: Replaces and absorbs the existing funding for child care related programs and tax credits into the expenditure of the Federal Child Care Program.

Section 5: Additional funding for this plan to make it balance-neutral is to be procured by an adjustment of the federal income tax that maintains the current income level distribution of the burden of taxation, with yearly requests for this proposed by the Department of education and subject to congressional approval.

This bill is then honorably presented to the Senate for consideration in order to change childcare measures to improve the United States Law and is backed by Sofia Fraser.

Thinking more about it, I've got to say that some moderate criticism from the right might be useful for Jackson. Since the other two candidates are a liberal Democrat who switched party and a liberal New York Republican, conservatives aren't going to abandon Jackson because he cuts taxes by 30% instead of 50%.

However, it will allow Jackson to appear more moderate than he is and get some moderates on his side in the primaries. And in the general election (in which an attack against Jackson is that he is too conservative), he can point to that criticism and say "look, I am a moderate".

The only possible way for Sharp to swallow this nasty pill is if section 2 is amended to exclude the 'race or colour' part. He's not just going to sit there and let the Child Care Program allow coloreds to have free child care, He'd like a priority for white couples first.

Announcment:

In a few IRL weeks (mid to late February in RP time) both senate seats/and an at large house seat will be up for election in the new state of Alaska. The races will be lean-democrat but anything can change. The primaries will start at the time specified above and the general election will happen sometime in August or September.

Now that is a gutsy move from Lahde. Can’t be certain how this will impact things, but that’s definitely pretty significant. Nevertheless, props to Latvijas Otra Republika for taking such a risk. Respect.

I doubt he’ll get so far as the nominations, especially if more candidates drop in and anything else happens. Best to do a few things beforehand. Also, can’t win without the risk of losing

And really I don’t mind writing life after losing, brief glory and failure. Adds more weight behind the actions of the people involved and gives a decent dose of reality.

General Jonathan Jackson Criticizes Senator Ladhe

Speaks of "Defeatism", Calls Out Senator

The Former Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers and current presumptive Presidential nominee for the Republican Party, Jonathan Jackson, in a public announcement criticized Senator Ladhe's criticism of the war in Vietnam.

"I am an avid reader of history, just like Senator Ladhe. As reader of history, I know that Japan had never been occupied in the past. Mongols and Chinese had tried to invade the Land of the Rising Sun, but never managed to conquer it. For centuries, Japan remained independent and undefeated. Yet, America beat Japan and occupied it for the first time in history. As Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers in the Pacific, I played a large part in bringing about this monumental victory and as Leader of the Allied Occupation of Japan, I oversaw the occupation of Japan by a foreign power for the first time in its long and ancient history."

"It is this personal experience of mine that makes me question Senator Ladhe's claims about Vietnam. If we followed the Senator's trail of thought during the Pacific War, we should have never been able to have conquered Japan as no one in history had done so. Yet, we did. I personally oversaw their surrender and the occupation of their land. If we could beat the Empire of Japan, we can certainly beat the North Vietnamese Communists. I have confidence in America. I have firm and unyielding faith in our troops and our destiny. I am not swayed by the defeatism of some. I know first hand how tough our boys are and how overwhelming our arsenal is. I believe that America can win. We did the impossible with Japan, we can do it against with Vietnam. We just need a leader that has faith in America."

Jackson hasn't mentioned anything to that extend specifically. Though (OOC speaking) Jackson personally/privately does believe nukes could be used in Vietnam. If he talks about it specifically in his campaign, though, it is another thing entirely.
