History: Since the unification of Germany after the Franco-Prussian War, Germany presided over mass-industrialization, the rise of constitutional governments, and several large conflicts. The founding of the German Empire in 1871 brought about an age of industrialization and economic growth in Germany, leaping to the forefront of the industrialized world. Germany allied itself with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Hohenzollern's had family ties to the Thrones of England and Russia. These family ties did not stop the three going to war, however, with Germany and Austro-Hungary being on one side, with France, England, the Russian Empire, and others on the other side. The Germans and Austrians were outnumbered, out-supplied, and out-moralled. The Kaiser, Kaiser Wilhelm the second, abdicated the throne, leaving a power vacuum which was filled by the newly formed Social Democratic Party. The SDP was founded out of the Sparticist Revolution of 1918, which was spurred on by the Bolshevik Revolution, and other socialist revolts. The SDP founded the Weimar Republic, which was similar to modern Germany. However, the Weimar Republic was saddled with the debts owed by the German Empire, and was being forced to cover the cost of WW1, entirely. The Weimar economy could not support this, and inflation soared as the German economy crumbled under the stress. In the early 20's more socialist revolts were attempted, this time spurred on by the USSR's Communist International. However this revolts were suppressed. That wouldn't be the end of domestic troubles for Weimar Germany, with Hitler and the National Socialist Democratic Workers Party (NZDAP) getting increasingly vocal and violent, this turned to revolution during the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923, where Hitler attempted a coup of the government. This failed, and he was detained.
When Hitler was released, he had already gained popular support from his biography Mein Kampf which he had written and had published in prison. He returned to the German political stage only 5 months into a 9 year sentence. This time, he decided on a more diplomatic approach. Making contact with the former German Junkers left over from the German Empire, he worked with them to gain political power, eventually rising to the Chancellery in 1933, the last free election Germany would have for the next 12 years. Only a few months into office, Hitler convinced the Parliament to give him the status of Fuhrer, or temporary autocratic power. There German would entire into a dark stain upon Germany's history, the Nazi regime would see the death of 6 million Jewish people in concentration camps, and the deaths of 60 million soldiers and civilians during the Second World War. Following the defeat of the Nazi Regime by the combined forces of the Soviet Union, United States, United Kingdom and Commonwealth, and France. Germany would be the starting point of the Cold War, with Germany being split, one part of Germany under the supervision of England, France, and America, and the other under the command of the Soviet Union. This would be the normal for the next 40 years, Germany separated, capitalism vs. Communism, Democracy vs. Autocracy. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 reconnected the two halves of Germany, the German Democratic Republic being absorbed into the Federal Republic of Germany.
Since the unification of Germany and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Germany has been the leading power in the European Union, and one of the most powerful economies in the world. Germany has recently revamped its military after the failure to even mobilize forces during the Bosnia-Herzegovina war of 1992. The Bundeswehr has now seen combat in the Middle East during the war on terror, and is one of the more powerful militaries in Europe, next to France and England. In recent history, Germany has taken the role of World Peacemaker after the turmoil in America and the demonstrated incompetence of the United Nations. Germany has seeked a more peaceful approach to the Middle East, constructing vast systems of infrastructure in the countries, improving quality of life and giving them fewer reasons to fight. So far, the plan has been working, however terrorist organizations continue to fight. After the departure of the UK from the EU, Germany has been withholding aid to help the UK's struggling economy as an attempt to force England back into the EU.

The Japanese military underwent major reform in the 1990s to become a full-fledged military after the abolishment of Article 9. Conscription was legalized and military service promoted, leading to an increase in personnel. While after 2010 Japan returned to an all professional force, Japan's military remains larger than IRL, and some older equipment has not yet been decommissioned. The Japanese military is in possession of domestic and foreign cruise and ballistic missiles, and has undergone research into ICBMs, with its M-V space rocket said to be roughly equal to the American Peacekeeper, and the J-1 rocket surpassing the American Minuteman III. Japan currently possesses 50 nuclear warheads.
Domestic Issues: Aging population and pacifist dissident
Foreign Issues: Threats from Korea and Russia and Senkaku and Takeshima Islands dispute.
History:
-1969: After the transition to the Nixon Presidency, Prime Minister Sato renounces his Three Non-Nuclear Principles and continues to argue that Japan needs to develop nuclear weapons to counter China's. He refuses to enter the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In his deal with Nixon over the repatriation of Okinawa, he agrees to allow the US to continue to maintain nuclear weapons on Okinawa. In a meeting with Nixon, Sato tells him that "The new generation could be educated to allow for nuclear development." As a result, the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture orders the revision of education policies and textbooks to a more militarist, pro-nuclear standing point. In addition, accounts of history from the Imperial period are more glorified.
-1970: In a secret offer to the US, Japan deploys 300 soldiers from the JGSDF and JASDF to Vietnam for "observation purposes" while also sending $5 million in military aid.
-1989: Fromer IJA Second Lieutenant; Prime Minister Uno successfully revises the constitution abolishing Article 9 with only a 2% margin in the vote.
-1991: The Hinomaru once again becomes the official flag, but no changes are made to it
-1992: Conscription is legalized and the Japanese military expands. Under Prime Minister Miyazawa, Japan begins development of strategic bombers and ballistic missiles.
-1993: Under Prime Minister Hosokawa, Japan begins development cruise missiles and a commission is formed to investigate the feasibility of a nuclear bomb.
-1995: Socialist Prime Minister Murayama attempts to revise the constitution to bring back Article 9, but fails.
-1996: The Japanese Air Force obtains Tomahawk cruise missiles from the US and domestically begins research on its own.
-1998: After the Korean Taepodong-1 missile test over Japan, the public cries out for better defenses and a Japanese nuclear deterrence.
-2001: In support of the US, Japan deploys 500 non-combat support troops to Afghanistan.
-2003: In a first, under pressure from America, Japan deploys 200 combat troops to Iraq in support of the US while also sending 1,500 more as non-combat support.
-2006: Shinzo Abe is elected and with his coalition having well over a two-thirds majority in both houses, engages in a massive re-militarization, ordering 2 light carriers and ordering the expansion of the fleet. In addition the production of several thousand ballistic missiles are approved, and nuclear research begins after North Korean nuclear tests.
-2009: Abe authorizes a project to develop a nuclear bomb.
-2012: After several years of Democratic party rule, Abe wins reelection. He orders the development of strategic bombers based around the B-52 and the Diet passes a plan for two carriers similar in size to the Queen Elizabeth Class and 2 light carriers to be constructed.
-2015: Japan develops its first nuclear bomb and production of 49 more are authorized, however none are ever tested.
-2017: Following Korean missile tests, Japan opens up its own intercontinental ballistic missile development.
-2021: Shinzo Abe continues his tenure despite a flare up in his illness and wins reelection.
-2022: Japanese companies plan to develop the Senkaku Islands to drill oil.
-2024: The first prototype of the 6th generation fighter Mitsubishi F-X is tested. Japan continues in its path towards militarization.

BTW, in this TL China is democratic, pro-US and has developed security ties with Japan (as China and Japan are both Western-oriented and face the Russian threat), so let's not get too antagonistic. It would help not to have aggressive posture.

As long as China accepts the Senkaku Islands to be Japanese, there will be no problem. As long as Korea accepts the Takeshima Islands to be Japanese, there will be no problem there either, so Japan will just focus on the Russian threat.
