A Country in Chaos
OOC|IC

The country of Valania is in turmoil. Following a decade of economic collapse and political violence, all out civil war has broken out between the many factions of the nation. This is the era of political and social upheaval worldwide, and Valania, having already gone through this phase not too long ago, is fracturing once again. It is either up to a new generation of leaders to decide the fate of this country now, or to return to an old order where times were much simpler. The fate of Valania rests in the coming years.

Context

It has been nearly 25 years since the country of Valania held its first democratic elections following the overthrow of the oppressive monarchy in 1919. The revolution, lead by liberal reformist Julius Zukal, ended in the overthrow of the centuries old monarchy with the forced abdication of King Jan III and ushered in the era of the First Valanian Republic, however, this was the era of numerous communist and socialist movements worldwide, and they found root in Valania too. Many followers of these movements laid low as Zukal, with overwhelming popularity, was elected as the country’s first president, instituting a liberal democracy with a free market economy. Many on the far left felt betrayed by this system, and over the years the coalition of the revolution ended with the split between the hardline communists and the liberals. Zukal publicly disavowed the communists, forming his own Revolutionary Valanian Party (RVP), in opposition to the communist’s Valanian Communist Party (VCP).

Six years into Zukal’s rule, the leader died of sudden cardiac arrest, as his successor was the timid and far less charismatic Oto Jerabek. Under him, the young republic’s economy collapsed into the worst crisis seen in a century, causing massive resentment from among the populace. Fearing another civil war and a revolution against his rule, Jerabek went against the very principles of Zukal’s revolution by heavily censoring any opposition, and using the police force, still loyal to the Republic, to suppress dissent. However, underground communist movements flourished with the poor state of the economy, with the newfound leader, the charismatic young Kvido Simek. In the following election, despite Jerabek’s attempts at suppressing opposition, the communist party triumphed, and ironically went on their own "reign of terror" against the RVP and its supporters, leading to a long period of political violence, further enhanced by the resurgence in popularity of the monarchy, especially in the Southwest, where monarchists claimed the revolution lead to the economic crisis and the violence.

With the next presidential elections in 1939 being won by the RVP, although under suspicious circumstances facing accusations of rigging by both communist groups in the VCP and conservatives, Jerabek returned to power and outlawed the VCP as a "terrorist group," leading to mass riots and protests in cities, especially with workers who formed the backbone of the VCP voting base. Further inflaming the tensions was the imprisonment and execution of Kvido Simek, leading him to adopt a near-legendary status as a martyr and hero of the cause among supporters. His successor was no less charismatic, Krystof Stejskal, a prominent trade union leader turned revolutionary theorist.

Meanwhile, large portions of the population were beginning to get fed up of the constant political violence and uncertainty in the country. Many people turned to the works of newspaper owner Rudolf Polak, whose views gained notoriety. Coinciding with the rise of fascism around the world, Polak believed that the only way to end political violence is through a strong totalitarian government, taking a third position which was neither left or right, and valuing nation over all else, with intense ultranationalist rhetoric. Polak formed the National Patriotic Front (NPF) and gained huge popularity especially in the Southern regions of the country, the NPF trained many of its young idealistic supporters and organized its own violent paramilitaries, known as the Lichtors. Due to the often violent nature of these paramilitaries, the NPF was banned from contesting elections and Polak imprisoned.

The Valanian military was arguably as divided as the country itself. Many military leaders were idealistic liberals, communists, ultranationalists, or monarchists. This all came to a breaking point in Decemeber of 1940. At the break of dawn, trade unions, assisted by sympathetic military leaders, led a massive storming of government buildings across the central part of Valania, North of the Middle Mountains. The most notable of these was the city of Glazhonsk, where large mobs of trade unionists took control of the city and maintained order through the sympathetic garrison in the city, imprisoning government officials and dissolving the police departments, which remained sympathetic to the Republic. These union uprisings were organized by the VCP, and that afternoon, Krystof Stejskal declared the second revolution, and claimed that the Republic had become as oppressive as the monarchy used to be. These uprising occurred all throughout the republic, however, those where the military garrisons were opposed to the communists were quickly crushed, leaving only the central area under de facto VCP control, as military stockpiles were raided and pro-communist workers formed crude paramilitaries to seize control of the countryside.

Seeing the chaos come to breaking point, the NPF leadership saw it as a "now or never" moment to advance their goals. While a military coup against the Republic had been considered in the past, it was deemed too unstable to succeed, until now with the communist uprising. Sympathetic military leaders cut off communications from the Republican government, all of them in the South of the country which formed the NPF’s main powerbase, and Lichtor militias seized military bases who remained loyal to the Republic or other factions. One of these militias stormed and freed Rudolf Polak from his prison, however, Polak being an ideological leader rather than a military one, chose to cede powers to sympathetic general Peter Rezincek for the duration of the inevitable Civil War, governing from the city of Morgaw. The NPF declared itself to be a country that prioritizes neither left or right, but Valania over all else. A sympathetic general who had been deployed to the extreme North also cut off communications from the Republic, sitting at the border between the communist territories and the Republic.

Seeing the chaos unfold, the neighboring nations of Maksaland, Freidhom, and Kartvelskia declared a joint agreement of neutrality in the Valanian Civil War, although how that neutrality will play out remains to be seen. All three were stable liberal democracies, although Kartvelskia had a growing communist movement as the economic depression of the 20s and 30s had affected it to a large degree as well.

Soon after, Janists, supporters of ousted monarch King Jan III, revolted with their militias, known as the King's Loyal Soldiers (KLS). While they failed to secure as much control as the other factions, managed to take their main powerbase in the Southwest Peninsula and the city of Novomaw. Despite only securing control over this area, the population of much of the Southwest is vehemently pro-monarchist, however with little military backing, they were unable to secure control over the area, and the area continues to remain unstable, against the Republicans who maintain control over it for now.

Seeing the systematic breakdown of the Republic, President Oto Jerabek declared martial law and entrusted himself with emergency powers, including the powers of mobilization. Retaining control of the capital and largest city in Valania, Kurmutsk, and most of the West, as well as the extreme East due to the establishment of sympathetic Republican garrisons in the area, he now faces the monumental task of keeping his government afloat and the Republic alive.

All factions vie for control over the entire country of Valania, but a brutal civil war where countrymen shall kill countrymen is inevitable now.

The Factions

Image
Name: Valanian Republic
Leadership: Nominally multi party democracy, de facto authoritarian dictatorship for duration of civil war
Capital: Kurmutsk
Key Leaders: President Oto Jerabek
Ideology: Liberalism, Democracy
Major sub-factions: Radical libertarians, business elite, social democrats
Loyal forces: ~123,000 personnel, maintains the loyalty of nearly the entire air force for now
Advantages: Internationally recognized government, comparatively less oppressive than other factions
Disadvantages: Extremely unstable, seen as a dying regime, large swathe of populace holds sympathies for other factions
Brief synopsis: The ruling regime of Valania before the uprisings, the Republic is seen by many as being on its death spiral. However, with international recognition and control of the skies with the air force, charismatic leaders can hope to turn the fate of this country around, and defeat the traitors.

Image
Name: Valanian Communist Party
Leadership: Controlled largely by Krystof Stejskal, with some power belonging to union leaders and de facto governance going to sympathetic garrison commanders
Capital: Glazhonsk
Key Leaders: Krystof Stejskal
Ideology: Marxism
Major Sub-Factions: Anarchists, Left Syndicalists
Loyal Forces: ~90,000 personnel, plus millions of passionate supporters
Advantages: High morale, popular among working class, able to mass-mobilize
Disadvantages: Little organized military support, poor fighting tactics, intense factional infighting
Brief synopsis: Born out of the original worker’s uprising, the communists see themselves as liberators advancing the cause of the revolution. They claim all of the other factions are reactionary, however, many within the communists question Stejskal’s leadership, some going as far as to accuse him of being a faux-communist due to his brutal authoritarian tendencies. These opposition groups, mainly anarchists, face increasing isolation from the major communist leadership, potentially creating a rift in the party. Stejskal and his group, on the other hand, believe these measures are necessary for the preservation of the people’s revolution through the civil war.

Image
Name: National Patriotic Front
Leadership: Totalitarian rule by military commanders, with order kept by Lichtor militias, comprised of young idealistic party members
Capital: Morgaw
Key Leaders: Rudolf Polak (ideological leader), Marshal Peter Rezincek (de facto leader)
Ideology: Third positionism, ultranationalism, national syndicalism
Major Sub-Factions: Right wing nationalists, racialists
Loyal Forces: ~100,000 personnel in military, 20,000 members of Lichtor militias
Advantages: Highly trained and disciplined forces, good leadership, growing support among people who don’t agree with either republic or communists
Disadvantages: Internal opposition, foreign condemnation, possibility of military disloyalty
Synopsis: Born from the works of Rudolf Polak, and coinciding with the rise of ultranationalism and fascism around the world, the NPF claims to take a third position, and believes that right and left politics have torn the country apart. It promises to improve Valania once again through totalitarian and repressive measures, uniting the country and reclaiming its former glory. However, a sub faction of this believes in preserving traditional institutions and seeks a compromise with the monarchists, much to the dismay of Polakists, while another sub faction subscribes to the idea of Valanian racial supremacy

Image
Name: King’s Loyal Army
Leadership: De jure monarchy, de facto military government
Capital: Novomaw
Key Leaders: Jan III (de jure), General Kvido Syzkin (de facto)
Ideology: Monarchism, conservatism, traditionalism
Major Sub-Factions: Rexists
Loyal Forces: ~50,000
Advantages: High morale, support from the Church
Disadvantages: Poorly trained military, small compared to other factions
Synopsis: Loyalists of the old overthrown monarchy, the KLS is composed of Janists who believe the overthrow of the monarchy is the catalyst of Valania’s instability. They enjoy widespread popular support in the Southwest, but only control the peninsula. The uprising was led by General Kvido Syzkin, however, King Jan still remains in exile and is unlikely to return to Valania until the end of the civil war, with Syzkin as the main leader of the faction. A growing number of members subscribe to Rexism, or combining monarchism with corporatist economics as professed by the NPF, this faction calls for an alliance with the NPF.

OOC: This is a character RP where you will create and guide your character through the civil war, your character could be anyone relevant to the political climate, whether it be a general, a political leader, etc. Whether they rise up the ranks and take control of the faction, win the civil war, or be stamped out soon is for them to decide.

Valania is a fictional country on a fictional continent, loosely based on an amalgamation of slavic countries. However, politics and technology evolved exactly the same as it did IRL, with the rise of Marxism and communism throughout the early 20th century, followed by the rise of fascism and third positionism in the 30s. This also coincided with the rise of aviation and the creation of permanent air forces. The geography of Valania involves a mild climate, with mild summers and winters. The country is generally hilly all throughout, however, the one major land feature to consider is the vast Middle Mountains, which roughly correspond to the border between Communist and NPF territory on the map. Otherwise rivers and streams dot the country’s landscape.

Character Application

Name: "My name is Istvan Kalwa. Typically, I am addressed as Brigadier Kalwa. The papers sometimes use my bestowed moniker, 'The Wolf of the Balarian.' My wife calls me Isty. I much prefer Istvan, if you wish to call me anything."
Age: "I am an even forty."
Personality description: "Rosica says that I am understanding, above all. I agree with her; I strive to change the things that I can change, and accept the things that I cannot. The largest part of this, is analysis and understanding. You must analyze every situation, every person, every blunder, and every triumph - and then you must understand what they mean. As an officer, I must guide my men as I would guide myself, solitary in the same situation. Lives hang in the balance upon my decisions, and life is precious. I understand failure, and I know to move past it. Personally, I do not fear death - but much hangs upon my life, and the lives of others. A dead private may mean a widow ends up impoverished."
Appearance: Image

Faction: "My secondmost loyalty is to the Republic. My first, is to my wife and children."
Position in leadership: "I am an officer in the armed forces; to be specific, I am a Brigadier in the Valanian Republican Army."
If Military or Militia leader, how many troops under command?: "I command a brigade of approximately one-thousand two-hundred soldiers, organized into three battalions and two separate companies. We are the 3rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade, equipped with motorbikes enabling the brigade to quickly move from location to location."
Political Ideology: "I was fifteen when I joined the protests against the decadent monarchy of my country. The pride I felt marching beside Zukal, and listening to him speak at his inauguration, was indescribable. In our revolution, we achieved the inalienable rights that we should have been entitled to all along. For all the cries of betrayal by the Communists and Anarchists, this national struggle is not about their preconceived notions of classless, tasteless utopia. And the protectionist and authoritarian policies of the Third Position? Even worse than what the Communists desire."

Goals: "Before the most recent unpleasantness, I would have told you that I wished to finish out my commission, secure a pension, and retire to a mountain estate to spend my days with Rosica. But with the violence, I must set my sights on the preservation of the Republic by any means necessary. I will go as far as I possibly can."

Biography: "My story begins in the Northern Karokand; the great eastern forest. The Old Kingdom, back in its Renaissance splendor, nurtured an ever-constant military presence on our eastern borders with Kartvelskia. Border forts, bastle houses, royal foresters scouting the border; that is our eastern frontier. Every generation of my lineage, since the 16th Century, has maintained a noble military lineage. My great-grandfather commanded the Royal Army at Prokupiewz against the Friedhomish during the War of the Broken Lance in 1845. As for my father and grandfather, the two men served as Hussar officers, both obtaining the rank of Colonel. I was born as the second of four children, in the garrison town of Halmberg. Among us, there is Stibor, my sister Johanka, and Bosko."

"Our family was of minor noble stock; commonplace for many old-school military officers. That fact awarded us with a cottage a mile outside of the town. My mother stayed home and served as homemaker, educating my siblings and I until we came of age for organized schooling. The chores were plentiful. We cleaned all two stories and every room of the cottage to inspection-ready standards, and mended the garden to ensure that we would not have to rely much on army stocks. In those precious few moments where I had my own time, I would spent it exploring the Northern Karokand, and seeking out trouble with the other boys. Existence was good, and I thanked the King when times were good. I had yet to experience the harsh side of our sovereign, to taste the future crimes of the monarchy."

"At eight, I was sent off for my standard schooling. Traditional military education, in the form of a boarding school located at the Royal Citadel in Kurmutsk. It was here that the virtues of the Kingdom were mercilessly hammered into our psyche. As future officers, we were bound by oath to be resolute in the face of death, to bolster the entirety of our courage, and - above all - to owe everything we had to our King. It was no charade back then. Six years I blindly adhered to the standards."

"And then, I grew. Granted temporary leave during the working week and weekend liberty as a Cadet NCO of fourteen, it gave me the opportunity to explore the ancient seat of power for Valania. In those days, the revolution was just beginning to stir, in the form of tavernside discussions and small protests, most of which were quickly broken up by the Royal Police. Agents and informers sniffed the dark corners of the city for plotters and 'terrorists,' as I knew of the revolutionaries in the early days. My experience with the revolution did not come in the form of some grand, secretive cabal of democratic-minded cadets; I knew nothing but King and Country. An agent of the secret police approached me with an offer: serve your King and prove your worth by infiltrating the dissidents. I was to earn their trust, feed information to my handler, and obey every order passed to me by my superiors. My target: the Kurmutsk Democratic Students' Union."

"They - the commandants in charge of myself and the other cadets - gave me a considerable amount of liberty. Much, for a boy only the age of fourteen, the age of my sons. In retrospect, it was the wrong environment to send a child into. On the other hand, what this experience gave me was a manifold of rewarding things. Sitting nondescript in an auditorium full of eager people, I listened to Zukal's explanation of liberal democracy, and I meditated upon those words. He and his fellow speakers - Communists, Nationalists, Liberals, Anarachists - all shared their disdain for the monarchy. Although I regularly reported to my superiors, I found myself believing in the need for true reform as something integral to the continued survival of Valania. I made contact with the Students' Union, and under an assumed identity, I was readily accepted into their ranks."

"My father and eldest brother died at Kobyla Field, in the trenches with thirty-thousand other Valanian soldiers during our most recent war with Friedhom. History has shown that most Kalwa men have a short life expectancy, and when I received the news of their passing, I expected for their remains to be treated with dignity. Instead, by order of a royal decree, my father and brother were posthumously proscribed as cowards and enemies of the Crown, on the pretext that they had supposedly been killed in retreat. Two ox-drawn carts showed up at the cottage in Halmberg: one unceremoniously bearing the remains of my loved ones, and another cart for my mother to use when vacating the cottage, as it was officially the property of the government. Our name was soiled, and it was seen fit to expel me from the academy. But, I know deep in my heart that my father and brother were true believers of the sovereignty of the Crown, and neither would ever think to throw down their arms and retreat. The humiliation, loss, despair; it further radicalized me to turn favor towards the impending revolution."

"We all know how quickly the revolution went through its course. The abdications and the protests, the street-fighting and the live ammunition. People hardly speak of the preparation that went into realizing the revolution; the guns and ammunition being stockpiled, precarious petrol bombs brewed in someone's flat, money being moved about to different hands. I was fifteen and on my own in a big city and my mother had taken the rest of the family to her ancestral homestead. This gave me plenty of free time to commit myself to the militant wing of the Liberals, the Student Militia Union. I lived in a one-bedroom flat with five other students, and under the tutelage of an old veteran named Wojak, we all prepared for our first taste of combat. My military upbringing have me an understanding of firearms and tactics and other conventional martial curriculums, but when challenged by a one-legged veteran, I was a mere babe in the woods. We learned the inner and outer intimate parts of our antiquated rolling blocks and lever-actions and coach guns and pistols, both autoloading and revolver. Wojak showed us how to stage an ambush; we went on walks and watched royal convoys, learning the best points at which to strike with the right tools. Like I said, these things should not be, in a normal polite liberal society, something that a young teenager should have to experience. Insurgency."

"In that crumbling flat, I found love. A girl named Rosica, a year older than myself. Chauvinism is rife in Valania, with an emphasis on a woman's place in society. Rosica defied the conventional; a tomboy who eagerly took to the struggle, beautiful and independent in body and spirit. Long nights were spent between us, concocting petrol bombs and drawing out intelligence on maps. I admired her then, and I continue to do so."

"Ah, now let us discuss the fun part: revolution, the struggle in the streets. The massive protests commenced first, and as expected, the police responded with heavy hands and brutality. Shots broke out, massacres of unarmed protesters occurred. Hundreds disappeared into the backs of automobiles driven by plainclothes secret police. But the defiance of the people did not stop; the King could not silence our collective discontent. The militias entered the fray, launching guerrilla attacks. We tossed grenades and petrol bombs from rooftops, fired our rifles into the formations of soldiers and police as we steadfastly held our barricades in the old city. It all moved too fast for me to properly speak; there was no time for me to question my own actions. I aimed down on my sights, pulled the trigger, saw bodies drop to the ground, and I moved on without a second thought."

"Zukal was elected to become the President of the First Republic, and I was ecstatic with joy. A sympathetic republic rehabilitated scores of fallen soldiers who were proscribed by the Crown, including my father and brother. In addition, for my combat service as a teenage insurgent during the fighting in Kurmutsk, an appointment to the newly-founded Military College of the Valanian Republic was tossed my way, two years before I would have been technically eligible. Four years of coursework passed by in a breeze, although I remember it not feeling as such at the time. But, my commission arrived sooner than later, and I earned the privilege of being the first Kalwa to serve the Republic. I married Rosica soon after, and we set off to the border with Maksaland, to my first posting as a platoon commander in the military affiliated Republican Gendarmerie. Part-police, part-soldier, with an emphasis on a role as mounted infantry."

"Junior officers have a serious task and obligation in ensuring the well-being of their men. Mission success depends upon it. Although I hate to admit this, soldiers can be an unruly lot. When they are on the job, they follow your orders obediently; but when they get liberty, all common sense flies out the window. Soldiers will drink and make merry and mischief and tragedy in equal amounts. I found myself acting as a parent, in many cases, to men who were the same age as me. And the chain. The chain of command is omnipotent, and hardly ever empathize with the lower ranks. Monotone orders came down as commonly as the summer rain. To add to the stress, Rosica bore us a pair of beautiful twin boys, Stepan and Pytor. Hah, children on all sides."

"At Zukal's funeral, the Gends escorted his hearse carriage through the main boulevard of Kurmutsk. That was an honor. Being used as a bullyboy to arrest and intimidate my fellow liberals at the behest of Jerabek- that is an insult. He did not march with Zukal against the monarchy; a cowardly shred of a man, who demanded what he couldn't prove himself entitled to. The Gendarmerie turned from an elite corps supporting the border guards, to a heavy-handed assault guard used for punishing political opponents. I wasted no time in putting in a transfer for an Executive Officer position of a Mountain Rifle company, garrisoned in the northeast. Boring work, but a stepping stone as with anything else. Other officers shared my discontent with the Republic, but I remembered my ideals and prayed for positive reform in the future."

"Fast-forwarding in time to 1939, I was in charge of an infantry battalion at Glazhonsk. The garrison was rife with Communists and Socialists, discontent with Jerabek's incompetence. Despite my sympathy, the Republic comes first. When the first protests in the city broke out over the election, I did what any other commander did in that scenario: I ordered them to their barracks. The internal committees of the Leftists within the military reacted harshly, and the mutinies broke out. My own men arrested me and marched me off, through the rain and mud and sheer bedlam happening around us, to a wooded lot with scores of other non-Communist officers. They even sent men to my home, to rape my wife and kill my sons. At the grace of God, I can say that neither of those things happened. Rosica shot three men dead with a revolver, and fled into the night with Stepan and Pytor. A round from the firing squad struck me in the shoulder and I was knocked down a hill, narrowly avoiding a place among those murdered in the massacre. Using the torn-off sleeve of my tunic to apply pressure on my wound, I walked six miles to escape the upheaval in Glazhonsk. By sheer happenstance, I found Rosica and the twins as they were searching for a dry place to rest for the night. I was beyond relieved. We slept in each other's arms that night, and in the morning, we began our long trek east."

"By automobile or train, or even by aircraft for that matter, traveling from Central Valania to Eastern Valania is little of a chore. On foot, an entirely different story. With me at the front, my family and I avoided the roads and set out through forests and fields. The Communists quickly set about consolidating their control over Central Valania, seizing the army depots and 'de-kulaking' the countryside. Patrols of soldiers in trucks and tachankas, wearing red stars and bearing red banners on their vehicles, combed the roads and intimidated the villagers into giving up those who were unsympathetic to their 'revolution.' We witnessed atrocities, usually from afar; the razing of a wealthy homestead, firing squads executing scores of men and women in the wilderness and dumping their bodies into an unmarked communal grave. We hid in the brush, watching these events unfold. Rosica and I each held one of our sons, keeping a firm hand on their eyes as to spare them the horror of witnessing such a thing. On one occasion, three Communist militiasmen chased us through the wilderness, forcing us to split up for almost thirty minutes, and in the end, Rosica shot one man dead and grievously wounded the other. I stabbed the last man with his own bayonet after concussing him with a stone, and then I finished off the wounded one. The boys watched, cowering silently as they played witness to savagery. The memory brings pain to my heart, to know that my boys will always remember something like that."

"Eventually, after seven harsh days in the elements, we made it to the East. A friendly army patrol stumbled upon us and we received an escort to a local outpost on the 'border.' Rosica and the boys were safe; but I was surprised to learn that I was one of the few high-rankers to escape execution or imprisonment. The strategic situation was in tatters; most of the garrisons in the Central area mutinied, and throngs of deserters roamed wildly and aimlessly. I received no word from High Command for six days. By the third day, I took it upon myself to ride horseback up and down the border in an attempt to rally our retreating units. I managed to incorporate some two-hundred soldiers in two days, and turned our focus towards the encroaching Communist threat. However, the Communists were not yet all on the same page; some of the militias wished to consolidate the Central region, and others wanted to push east. We were expelled from most of Central Valania, but in the places that matters -the places pivotal for the invasion of the East - my men and I worked hard to stop their butts cold. That meant constant foot movement across the plains and through the forests, and patrolling along the downward stretches of the Balerian River in search of Communist war parties attempting to take the bridges and villages on our side. Hard ground was our home, rotating between day and night fighting on a weekly basis. The fight to maintain morale was as uphill as the actual fighting, and I wholly credit my junior officers and non-commissioned and warrant officers with holding my force together in those dangerous days. Our actions ranged from pitched engagements with enemy formations, to the sabotage of the four principal bridges across the Balerian. Loyal garrisons reinforced our foothold on the border, but the fight goes on."

"More mutinies took place, in the form of royalist and fascist organizations provoking their own revolution. The NPF ordered sympathetic formations to usurp their garrisons and the civil administration. A cadre of NPF mutineers from another battalion attempted to overthrow my command in Halmberg, and my men responded by taking those idiots as prisoners. On orders from High Command, I led a successful effort to purge the Southeast of NPF elements, from the mutinous soldiers to the hellraising Lichtors. In the dead of night, we drug suspected NPF members prisoner; some were taken to the stockade in Halmberg, but many more found themselves strung up along the road in order to let the NPF and Communists and Royalists understand one simple rule: all traitors go to Hell."

"Some say we are on the precipe of civil war; certainly, the Friedhomish papers I read speak of this. Jerabek is more than willing to go along with it, and I have a sick feeling in my stomach. That feeling is an intense fear that Jerabek will lead us to our demise, and abandon the Republic in our darkest moment. We are already in the thick of it; more offensives may be happening all over Valania, but the fighting has been raging for a while. The climax is coming."

Right now the anarchists are a loose collection of communists who don’t like Stejskal’s authoritarian rule and they think he goes against communist values, not very organized or popular yet

Character Application

Name: Vasiliy Sokolov
Age: 23
Personality description: A model Communist, Vasily is brave, trusting, and loyal to a fault. He is also highly empathetic and concerned with the lives of others.
Appearance: Sokolov in his uniform.

Faction: Valanian Communist Party
Position in leadership: Lieutenant in the Union Militias
If Military or Militia leader, how many troops under command?: Commander of the 2nd Company, 3rd Glazhonsk Armed Automobile Workers Battalion; approximately three hundred or so men and women across six platoons acting as mobile infantry utilizing trucks and improvised technicals.

Political Ideology: Vasiliy is a member of the Valanian Automobile Workers Union, apart of the larger federation of Unions comprising the Left Syndicalists faction of the Valanian Communist Party. He wishes to see a new Workers Republic brought about where production would be organized by the Unions and work directly by Democratic floor votes. While he doesn't appreciate the Communist Party's War Communism policy, he understands it as a temporary measure instituted due to the harsh reality of war. He saw first hand how the Capitalists and the Authoritarians work, he believes he cannot see a return to the corrupt Republic or the despotic Patriots.
Goals: Currently assigned to the Eastern Front, Vasiliy is taking part in the current offensive to crush the Republican pocket, allowing Communist forces in the east to be transferred West. In a broader view, Vasiliy wants to see his Company through the war to victory so that he can see the better world he knows is coming.

Biography: Born in the Valanian countryside to peasant villagers working the land, Vasiliy grew up watching his parents slave away growing crops they'd then hand over to the lord who owned the land, leaving for them only crumbs. He spent his teen years living through the end of the monarchy; the establishment of the Republic freed him of many of the social restrictions on peasants, allowing him to travel to the nearby city of Glazhonsk. The new Republic gave the young Vasiliy hope of upward mobility, a hope crushed by the reality of post-revolutionary Glazhonsk. It was an industrial town, with workers living in slums or tenement blocks of poor quality. Vasiliy got a job at an automobile factory; the dangerous working conditions and low pay led him to join the Autoworkers Union, and his first strike radicalized him as the Police beat and shot at them for daring to demand better wages.

When the General Strike was proclaimed, Vasiliy was one of many who took up the call as an organizer for his Local. He and his fellow union members stormed the factory with rifles and pistols, shutting it out to the bosses and seizing the machines and trucks for themselves. When the police arrived, Vasiliy oversaw the defense of the factory until the local Mutineers arrived and drove the police out. At the end of the skirmish, Vasiliy stood side by side with his fellow Union members and Communists as the red and black flag was raised over the city's government building. Already de facto leader for the Auto local, when the militias were organized Vasiliy was given a commission as a Lieutenant and placed in charge of a company of his fellow automobile workers who were now using the seized trucks as mobile machine gun platforms. I need of their speed and firepower, the Battalion was assigned to the Eastern front to fight along the coastal plains, driving the Republicans into the ocean.

Character Application

Name: Vasiliy Fyodorovich Malin
Age: 43
Personality description: Charismatic, idealistic, but somewhat naive and stubborn man. Easy to get angered where he sees perceived injustice, but in general friendly and approachable.
Appearance:
Image
Faction (Either member of or sympathetic towards): Communist Anarchists
Position in leadership (if any): None, is an anarchist leader against the Communist leadership
If Military or Militia leader, how many troops under command?: N/A
Political Ideology: Anarchism

Goals: Overthrow Stejskal’s rule, abandon authoritarian communism and entrench anarchism in the communist party, and most importantly win the civil war

Biography: Growing up in a lower middle class family in Glazhonsk, Malin attained average education and basic literacy in his early life, while not enjoying the privileges of the nobility and the upper class in the era of the monarchy. He was in his late teens during Zukal’s Republican Revolution, which gave him immense hope in the future for the time. However, he was quickly disillusioned by Zukal’s ready acceptance of capitalism, and as a steel worker, joined in the trade union and became a member of the communist party in opposition to Zukal’s liberal rule. At this time, Malin was a broad supporter of Kvido Simek, and helped volunteer for the VCP in the presidential elections that brought him to power for a short while. Simek’s rule in general met his expectations, with increasing rights for trade unions and improving living standards for workers like himself. Due to not having to work long hours, Malin could dedicate his time to his passion, writing. He wrote many works adding on to the theories of Marx and other communist thinkers, promoting a brand of communism which also emphasizes the individualism and personal liberty of the person. Then, the 1939 presidential elections happened, Jerabek seized power, outlawed the communists party, and killed Simek. Malin became a prominent voice against Jerabek’s rule, to the point where he was arrested and jailed for incitement to riot as he rallied fellow steel workers to strike and protest against the rigged election.

It was during his 6 months in jail when he wrote what he considers his magnum opus, The Philosophy of Anarchism and Libertarian Communism. This work laid out his ideological foundations and his vision for the country, a worker’s utopia where government interference in daily life was nearly nonexistent and the concept of currency and class long forgotten. His work was scoffed at as being unrealistic and utopian by the Communist Party leadership following his release from jail, and thus began Malin’s fallout with Stejskal’s brand of authoritarian communism, and the leadership of the Communist Party in general.

As the country devolved into chaos, Malin rallied first his fellow steel workers, then a growing audience of anarchists against the mainstream Communist Party. He collaborated with other anarchist philosophers and thinkers in the Communist Party, to the point where Stejskal considered him thorn in his side and attempted to assassinate him. Malin survived the assassination attempt by fending off the hitman with a flagpole, and following the incident, became a relentless critic of Stejskal, encouraging his supporters to end their endorsement of Stejskal’s authoritarianism, and repeatedly claiming Stejskal was a coward. He even went as far as to say "Stejskal is just a Lichtor in red clothing." Stejskal on the other hand claimed that the assassin was a "random nut job" and had no connection to him, and said that authoritarian measures were necessary to preserve the revolution.

Despite their fallout with each other, Malin still joined in with the rest of the communists during the "December Revolution," and directed his band of anarchists to assist the communists in establishing control over the territory they managed to gain. However, his position quickly went back to opposing Stejskal and comparing him to the NPF, especially after witnessing the "Red Terror" that spread in the communist controlled territories. He now looks to increase popular support for his anarchist ideology, and become part of the Communist leadership, hopefully removing Stejskal.
