Admittedly, the Governor’s tenure has thus far been proven to be relatively stable, albeit fairly low-key in it’s achievements, notably of all the $1.1 billion cash reserve the state now possessed. Still, the death of Marlon Ward had changed that almost instantly. Now, the eyes of the nation were on Kansas over the next few days, days which would prove to be either a triumph, or a cause of trepidation for the Governor. Nevertheless, the Governor approached the area at which the press conference was to take place and, standing behind the podium prepared a few minutes before, began speaking.

“Good afternoon, before I begin, I’d like to thank the ladies and gentlemen of the press for being here today.”

“The tragic and completely avoidable death of Marlon Ward today is a great tragedy both within the state of Kansas, and the United States, and serves to highlight the issues of police negligence and systemic racism faced by the African American community.”

“For one minute and 13 seconds, Marlon Ward was forced onto the ground and placed in a chokehold, constantly pleading with Officers Fowler and Peters to be unhanded and saying ‘I can’t breathe’. If anything else, this serves as a dreadful reminder of how far we as a nation still have to go in improving race relations and policing in the United States.”

“For that reason, I am calling on the Attorney General (Not-Derek Schmidt) to undertake a full and comprehensive probe into the conduct of Officer Randolph Fowler and Officer Janet Peters’ regarding the case of Marlon Ward, with the possibility of the judiciary system’s involvement should it prove necessary.”

“Furthermore, I am declaring a state of emergency across the state of Kansas for 14 days, with the possibility of an extension should the need arise. Consequently, I am also activating the Kansas National Guard to provide support to law enforcement in Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita in a de-escalatory capacity with no public display of weapons.”

“Finally, I will be working closely with the Mayors of Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita over the coming days and weeks in order to ensure that the situation in Kansas remains stable and peaceful, and that no escalation in tensions arise. For that reason, I implore politicians across both sides of the aisle to avoid any potential politicisation of the current situation in Kansas, so that we may be able to deal with, and pull through, this dark and tragic episode in our state’s history.”

“Any questions the press have are to be directed towards the Police Chiefs of Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita present today, Adjutant General (Not-David Weishaar) as well as the National Guard officer leading the deployment.”
