Dear Ms. Lazare,

I am Hugo Fitzgerald. You may or may not have heard of me, but I am currently running to represent Texas’ 9th District in the House of Representatives. Should all go well, I hope to join you in the House. Although, to win, I would need a bit of a boost.

And that is where you would come in. You have made a bit of a name for yourself, and a potential endorsement could do well for my campaign. I believe we could also potentially meet in person to further discuss this topic. I do wish to thank you in advance as well.

Well wishes,

“Alright, I’m coming.”, Hugo called back. He then got up and headed to the dining room.

Sir,

I've seen your campaign and it would please me greatly to have a meeting with you! I'm in Texas doing a little bit of ground game work, feel free to stop by at my Congressional Office in Houston! I was great friends with (Not- Al Green), and I think you'd be a great addition to the Texas Democrats! Before I endorse you, I'd like to get to know you a bit better, so like I said, stop by my office when you're free!

Sincerely,

BREAKING: Wichita Man Killed By Police On Video, Protests Stir
By Richard Brown

Image

This is a developing story

On May 29th, Wichita, Kansas Police responded to a report of suspicious behavior downtown in front of a small business, Rick's Hardware and Garden Supply. What unfolded after is sure to stir a new wave of activism and generate reaction across the country. Upon arriving at the scene, Officers Randolph Fowler and his partner Janet Peters encountered 35 year old Marlon Ward. The officers are believed to have briefly spoken to Ward, who they determined to be under the influence of drugs and in possession of crack cocaine, before an altercation broke out, with Officer Peters attempting to restrain Ward and Ward resisting arrest, pushing Peters to the ground and demanding that the officers unhand him, as he had "done nothing wrong". Officer Fowler is then seen on store surveillance tackling Ward and placing him into a chokehold on the ground. Bystander footage that has gone viral on social media shows Officer Fowler maintaining the chokehold for one minute and thirteen seconds, during which time Ward is seen desperately struggling and pulling at the Officer's arms, choking out the words "I can't breathe" before becoming unresponsive at the 0:42 second mark. Bystanders are heard yelling at officers and demanding that Officer Fowler release Ward, pleas which went unanswered. Near the conclusion of the video, one bystander is heard yelling "You killed him!", prompting an unintelligible remark from Officer Peters before the video ends. Paramedics arrived at the scene 3 minutes later and rushed Ward to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Fowler has been fired while Officer Peters has been suspended pending review, neither having been placed under arrest as of the publication of this article. 20 and 14 year veterans of the force respectively, both officers have received complaints of excessive force during their time in the Wichita Police Department, with Officer Fowler being involved in an incident involving a homeless individual in 2016 and Officer Peters being involved in an incident with a mentally ill individual in 2014. Police Chief Eric Martell has released a statement urging calm and has said that the Wichita police department is taking the matter "extremely seriously" with "additional steps being considered".

Both officers involved in the incident are white while Ward is African-American.

Ward, an unmarried father of 3, is reported to have recently become unemployed as a result of the ongoing recession. He previously worked as a salesman at a local furniture store and before that as a cashier at a McDonalds. He was enrolled in classes at Wichita State University and pursuing a degree in business, according to his immediate family, with dreams of starting his own business. His girlfriend, LaTonya Williams, has described the 6'8 Ward as a "gentle soul" who loved children and animals and who would "never willingly hurt anyone." Ward has a minimal criminal record, with several convictions for possession of marijuana and two traffic violations.

Activists across the country are already planning to take to the streets in protest, calling for the arrest of the officers involved and a complete overhaul of the policing system. Demarcus Stone, the President of the NAACP has called the events on video a "cold blooded murder" and demanded justice. A local activist in Wichita wrote to the Times claiming that without swift action, "there will be an equal response" to the killing saying that "its gonna get ugly fast." At the time of this article's publishing, numerous protesters have gathered in downtown Wichita and a vigil has been erected near the scene of the incident.

The nation's eyes turn now to its leaders, who are faced with questions of policing, racial justice, and use of force. How they respond remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: more developments are all but certain.

The actions committed against Marlon Ward are just, sadly, further proof that we need to shrink the government. We should not have the actions of police officers - even if accidentally - resulting in the death of someone who was merely a petty criminal at worst.

Bernard J. Porter
@BerniePorter

I think I speak for the majority of Americans when I say that all lives matter. We must continue to crack down on drugs in our communities to ensure that nobody meets Mr. Ward's fate all because of a bunch of pills.

Bernard J. Porter

However, I also speak for the majority of Americans when I say that I seriously hope that the federal government takes strong and decisive action against racial agitators who seek to use the death of a man as a result to burn and kill across this nation.

Erika Goldman
@GoldmanConnecticut

May Marlon Ward rest in peace. The excessive force used on him by the police officers - who should've been suspended earlier for all their previous uses of excessive force - was unequivocally and unambiguously wrong. They must be brought before some sort of trial.

Rest in peace to Marlon Ward. He should still be alive at this moment. The officers should have been suspending long ago for their previous conduct, and now their excessive force led to the loss of a human life. We needed to take real action to ensure police who abuse their power are held accountable yesterday!

The public execution of Marlon Ward is the latest example of a police force in America that exists primarily to uphold and perpetuate white supremacy. There must be immediate justice, starting with the arrests of Officers Fowler and Peters. After that, we must reckon with the reckless disregard for black life in this country and make serious, deep change. There can be no delay. #BlackLivesMatter #ICantBreathe #StopKillingUs

Nereida Halloway
@DCMayor
I will be organizing a march through DC to show the federal government that black and brown voices are no longer to be snuffed out, not by officers, not by politicians, not by anyone. The time for inaction has long passed, and if change does not come willingly, it must be pried from our oppressors' grasp. "The future belongs to those who prepare for it today."

Rep. Dan Ziegler
@DanTheManZiegler

I like all sensible people am horrified by the video out of Kansas. The officers involved must be held accountable and Marlon Ward must receive justice. This cannot be allowed to stand.

My heart goes out to the family of Marlon Ward and to all families that have suffered at the hands of police violence. We must take this tragic moment to reflect on our divisions and work to mend them, and that starts with holding bad officers accountable.

Image
Rep. Suzette Seidel
@CaptainSeidel
I hate to say it, but what happened to Mr. Ward would not have happened if he had not resisted arrest and been under the influence of heavy drugs. He attacked an officer and was promptly restrained by her partner, and his death was clearly a tragic accident. Democrats will inevitably use this to attack good hardworking law enforcement officers as racists, and we cannot let them get away with it.

Image
Cynthia Rogers-Gonzalez
@BackwardsAndInHeels

Wichita and the nation are hurting right now following the horrific video we all saw, and I think its safe to say that justice must be delivered for Marlon Ward. Bad officers must be held to account for their actions so that good ones can do their jobs, and the African-American community's pleas for change must be heeded.

Marlon Ward’s death is unfortunate, but he clearly was under the influence and openly a law enforcement officer. Governor Lee must prepare the Alabama National Guard to deal with any coming BLM riots as a result of this. We cannot let anarchists use this death as a means to their violent agenda!

There are many who would like to excuse the death of Marlon Ward, saying he was under the influence because one cop said so. Many, if not most, are "small government" Republicans who decry socialism every time a Democrat does anything. It's sad how your distrust of the government and the state ends when black lives are involved.

Image
Jamal Patrick Image
@realjamalpatrick

Police departments have progressively been turning into an armed wing of the government. The fact of the matter is they don't need their bloated budgets and military grade equipment!

Image

@AnneCaldwell
Marlon Ward should be alive today. Period. There is nothing that justifies his death.

Image
Julia Piotrowska Image
@JuliaInTheHouse

America has a clear policing problem. While other countries are capable of enforcing their laws, capturing suspected criminals and resolving conflicts without countless deaths, police departments across our country have endless lists of men and women whose lives were cut short by poorly trained officers, oftentimes with a record of complaints and incidents involving the use of physical force.
Image

Julia Piotrowska Image
@JuliaInTheHouse

The worst part is that there isn't a simple fix to this issue. The well-documented tragic death of Marlon Ward shows us that simply de-arming the police, stripping them of their guns, is not enough. Marlon should be alive, but he isn't because of a system that targets the underprivileged and because of people who think the issue is below them, that because it's not supposed or likely to happen to them they don't have to address it.
Image

Image
Robert Pelletier Image
@RobForMaine
The life of Marlon Ward was tragically cut short through an incredibly poor response of the two police officers in Wichita. For the sake of our safety we need to raise the standards for policing nation wide, require better training and ensure that officers with records of violence are properly investigated BEFORE a tragedy happens.

@MadamSpeaker

I'll make a more comprehensive statement on the situation in Wichita after consulting with African-American leaders from around the country and from inside Congress, but I will make one thing eminently clear. The United States of America was built on the promise of "liberty and justice for all". It falls to those in public office to make sure that maxim is a reality, not a fantasy, and for too many African-Americans, it has been held out of reach by systemic racism.

Image
Senator Raph Navarro
@NavarrofromCalifornia

My big break in journalism came from breaking a story about white nationalism in the Los Angeles Police Department, exposing entrenched systemic racism in that system. Decades later, we still see egregious acts of violence committed by LEOs who indulge in a culture where African-Americans are viewed as the enemy. This toxic culture in policing needs to be tackled, and it needed to be tackled yesterday. Something is very rotten in the state of policing.

Image
John Nathan Lynskey
@JNLynskeyMA

Marion Ward should still be alive, but he isn't, because of a culture in policing that perpetrates and aggravates violence and bigotry, and of a broad swathe of the political class prepared to lock arms and circle the wagons against the black communities that are crying out for justice. Reform of the police needs to come about swiftly and promptly - every one of these tragedies has been preventable, it is long overdue to take the real steps to prevent them.

One of the darkest stains on America's history has been the treatment of African-Americans by the police. Equal treatment under the law is fundamental to the arc of history after the Civil War, but equal treatment by those who enforce the law is long overdue. Whilst the vast majority of police officers are good people, and a boon to our communities, the time for oversight and accountability is long overdue. At the end of the day, all we want to know is: Who will guard the guards themselves?

Troubling news from Wichita today, my thoughts are with the family of Marlon Ward who have had the bright future of a loved one doused by a tragic misuse of police force. We must address policing culture and tactics critically if we are to truly fulfill the mandate of serving the community. (1/2)

This recent incident is part of a broader pattern of abuse of power, the officers involved should be held accountable for the death of Marlon Ward. African American leaders have for years been telling Washington that reform of our police departments is needed, this incident highlights that the time for reform is now if not yesterday. (2/2)

I am praying for Marlon Ward and his family today, what happened to him was a horrific tragedy. But the politicization of his death by certain politicians on the left before his family has had a chance to grieve or process what happened is disgusting and inexcusable, especially when its used to denounce and defame the police as a whole. For now I ask Americans to pray for swift justice and that some measure of peace comes to Mr. Ward’s family.

What happened to Mr. Ward was very tragic, and my heart goes out to his family. The kind of police brutality that caused his death mustn’t be allowed to continue. 1/2

We need to reform policing and how we train our officers so that they can better serve their community and more like Mr. Ward don’t have to die. #ItsTimeForChange 2/2

I don't know Marlon Ward, I don't know his lifestyle, and I sure as hell ain't no policeman. I'll say this, Marlon Ward seemed like he was under the influence, he seemed like a bull in a china shop. All that aside, he didn't deserve to die. I don't think this was an act of racism, just by looking at the video. I think due process, and an investigation needs to go down. The Woke Liberals won't wait for that though, I predict the streets will be burning by midnight next Tuesday, and hundreds more folk get killed.

Let Mr. Ward's death be a warning to folks all around the country. Listen to police, comply, don't fight them like a fool, and if you want to be even safer from Mr. Ward's fate, THEN DON'T COMMIT CRIMES!

Police Reform has been needed for years, maybe Mr. Ward won't die in vain, maybe his death will cause change. I think protests are needed in this situation. We need to get out and let our voices be heard, while Marlon Ward may simply be just a 'criminal' or a 'crackhead' to some, he is still a father, a boyfriend, and another human being. We need a proper investigation into the matter, immediately.

The Feyrer Offices
The Day of Marlon Ward's Death

The entire team was working but one intern, who was glued to the television when Deborah entered her offices. She towered over her interns, frowning somewhat as she looked at the television, "are they still talking about it?"

"It's just such a tragedy," replied the intern sincerely, "so avoidable."

"How so?" Deborah asked after a second, the staff ignored the intern and Deborah.

The intern frowned, "he pushed a cop so they choked him."

"You're right," Deborah replied, placing a hand on her shoulder, "shooting the bastard might have been cleaner."

The intern was removed from the offices by the next morning, while Deborah went into her own office, and frowned at the despicable nature of these woke interns.

Let's remember that Cops and Law Enforcement are good people. I don't know what happened before the video was taken, but all I see is a mistake made by a policeman. Don't let this one fool determine your opinion on the rest of the law enforcement throughout the country. Utah Police are good, New York Police are good, Kansas Police are good. All Cops Are Good unless they prove different.
