Good time to rejoin as its a bit slow. Its Richardson v Dayton in the general. Lavan is now playing Dayton. After the death of (Not George Floyd) Bernard Porter attacked a rally in atlanta and ended up blowing himself up in a compound killing 12 people. Things looked bad for the GOP but then Richardson gave a speech at gettysburg which kinda won the moment and finally untied the GOP behind them. On the flip side the Democrats have failed to get a police reform bill written and it has cost them dearly with the BLM movement.

On the flip side if Richardson loses GOP thinking about the Porter compound incident is gonna follow a similar course to January 6th

1. The incident was an act of pure evil
2. The incident was bad but not as bad as the Democrats said
3. Both sides bare some blame for the incident
4. The Porter people were just firing off some fireworks drawing a disproportionate response from the atf
5. Porter was murdered by the deep state and brave citizens and the people who died there were all martyrs and the start of a new revolution
6. Porter was a hero and the incident was good, we should do it again

Yea Richardson is very aware that him losing the general woulda been bad for the GOP before and losing now would be catastrophic

Hey y'all, sorry for my absence lately. My mental health hasn't been fantastic, and I just haven't had the brain space for LOTF. I'll be active again very soon--just as soon as I'm in my own home.

Got a TG from Dentali a while ago asking if I would come back and while I can't make any promises as to whether I can maintain being active here I figured I'd pop in to see what's going on.

Character State of Origin: North Carolina
Character State of Residence: North Carolina
Character Party Affiliation: Republican
Main Strengths: Experienced, firm member of the Republican establishment, easily makes friends with fellow Republican politicians, charismatic.
Main Weaknesses: Sometimes focuses too much solely on issues that his state faces more than national issues, poor debater about topics that make him hot headed and on topics he has a short temper when discussing, hates sitting in long meetings and his annoyance can often be seen on his face after he becomes tired of attending a lengthy meeting, often critical of those on the left and far left in regards to their tremendously opposing views; disliked by LGBT rights organizations and hated by pro-choice organizations.
Biography: Noah Jefferson Ashe was born to Benjamin and Regina Ashe on November 30, 1958 in Wilmington, NC. His father was a Presbyterian minister and his mother was a nurse. He has confirmed, on multiple occasions, that he is a direct descendant of Samuel Ashe, the ninth governor of North Carolina. He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1977, before going to attend NC State University and graduate with a B.A. in communications in 1981. He ran in cross country and track & field at both schools, having finished 10th in the state cross country meet his senior year of high school and finishing 4th in the state in the two mile race in track during his senior year of college.

After college, he'd go on to work for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. His first and only position there, starting in 1981, was as an admissions counselor in the undergraduate admissions office. He held this position until moving to Winston-Salem in 1986, to live with his fiance whom he'd met at a educational conference in Greensboro. He started working as an admissions counselor in the Undergraduate Admissions office at Wake Forest University in 1986 and married his fiance, Grace Anne McKimmick, in September of that year. While working at Wake Forest University, he'd pursue his master's degree at the school, graduating with an M.A. in communications in 1988. He enrolled in a PhD program at the University of North Carolina in 1989, graduating with a PhD in media and communications in 1999.

In 1992, he ran against incumbent Democratic Representative Harrison Oakley to represent North Carolina's 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lost the election and maintained his position at Wake Forest University. In 1994, he ran for the office again after Oakley announced he'd not be seeking re-election. Ashe won the election and took office on January 3, 1995.

While in the House, he pushed for relaxation of restrictions on the burning of fossil fuels, he was also an outspoken opponent to LGBT rights and abortion whenever the topics came up. In 1994, he criticized the American Medical Association for distinguishing homosexuality as something that isn't an illness. In 1996, he was a very verbal supporter of the Defense of Marriage Act, convincing his constituents that it was a great thing and leading to more popularity for him among North Carolinians.

In 2000, he ran for Governor against the incumbent Lieutenant Governor. The Lt. Governor was looking to be the favorite in the election and would go on to win the election, delivering Ashe his second political loss. Ashe would return to work at Wake Forest University, this time as the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions, before running for the Governorship again in 2004, after the incumbent governor announced he'd not seek re-election, this time winning the office and moving to Raleigh with his wife and five children and taking his office in January 2005.

Through 2005 and 2006, Democrats held the majority of the NC General Assembly but did not hold a veto-proof majority. In February of his first year in office, the first bill he signed into law was Senate Bill 7 following overwhelming Republican and Democrat support for the bill. The law would implement funding for state agencies to investigate the damage caused by Hurricane Isabel the year before and appropriate funds for repair of public buildings along the NC coast damaged by the hurricane. Later that same year he signed a bill he endorsed, naming the Division of Forest Resources as a state emergency response agency. In August 2005, he vetoed HB1023, which would establish a state lottery to support construction of schools and fund university scholarships, after the Bill had narrowly passed through the Senate in a 26-24 vote.

Throughout 2006, he worked with Republicans and conservative-leaning Democrats to push for a bill that would tighten abortion regulations, but the bill was defeated by the majority Democrat General Assembly. In the 2006 elections, Democrats gained seats in both houses of the General Assembly, though still not holding a veto-proof majority. Attempts to pass laws tightening abortion regulations were defeated throughout 2007 and 2008 as a result of this. More bipartisan laws were passed, namely a few bills implementing increases in funding for hurricane damages. The General Assembly approved a bill in August 2008 that granted homosexual residents protection from discrimination in hiring processes by state agencies, but this bill was vetoed by Governor Ashe.

In the 2008 election, Governor Ashe won re-election to his office and Republicans won both houses of the General Assembly. During this time, Republicans finally pushed through laws restricting abortions in the state, such as requiring parents to be notified if their children leave the state to obtain an abortion and marking abortions illegal in the state if a heartbeat of the unborn life can be detected.

In 2010, Republicans passed a law reaffirming marriage as "between one man and one woman," following the worrisome policy of other states to legalize same sex marriage. In July 2010, Amendment 1 passed through the General Assembly, the intent of the amendment to label marriage as between "one man and one woman" in the North Carolina constitution and furthermore to ensure that the state does not recognize or perform same sex marriages or unions. Amendment 1 then went to the ballots for a voter referendum in November 2010. With 44% voter turnout, the amendment passed easily with 68% of the vote.

In 2010, he ran for the U.S. Senate, winning with 55% of the vote and entering the office in January 2011. Upon winning in November, he resigned from the governorship position on November 15, 2010, to prepare to move to Washington, D.C., his Lieutenant Governor rose to the office of Governor following Ashe's resignation. In 2016, he won reelection with 62% of the vote. During his time in Senate, he has voted yes on various bills that fit his views and has rarely surprised fellow Senators with some of his votes.

Mainly copied and pasted this from the old pre-Land of the Free roleplay, so kindly point out if anything is amiss.

Wanted to bring Noah Ashe back because I like him. I've noticed that Dentali's Richardson has been NC Governor since 2012, in the old RP I had Ashe as Governor from winning election in 2004 until running for Senate in 2010. I noticed Dentali's backstory for Richardson suggests the governor before him was a Democrat (it's possible Ashe's Lt. Gov could've been a Democrat and moved up when Ashe moved up to the Senate), if I need to change the dates of Ashe's governorship or anything else, I can.

NS Nation Name: Emazia
Character Name: Everson Boyd
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 70
Character Height: 190cm
Character Weight: 70kg
Character Position/Role/Job: Secretary of Labor (1993-1997), Congressman for the 1st District of Indiana (1997-), Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (2005-2011)
Appearance: Image
Character State of Origin: Indiana
Character State of Residence: Indiana
Character Party Affiliation: Democrat
Main Strengths: Very charismatic, inspiring life story, strong name recognition, quite healthy, good economic credentials and has a strong record
Main Weaknesses: Prone to aggressive gaffes, on the fringes of economic debate, strong pro-Palestine stance, disliked by business donors, increasingly reddening seat, could be seen as a bit wonkish due to his economic education.
Biography: Born to an oil tank driver and an elementary school teacher, Boyd was born into Prairie Township, Indiana. In his childhood, he often spent his days with the other children in the town, and was noted for his dedication to work and strong opinions on everything, from flowers to food. He had always been regarded as quite a (verbally and physically) fighty and aggressive child, along with having quite a sharp mind and a love of competitive sport. However, due to the fact that his parents had lived in poverty, he had decided to go off and join the military in 1967, and had served until 1970, when he was withdrawn from the front. His service saw him take mild injuries from fighting on the frontline.

However, seeing the fact that he could not serve for long enough to have his education paid for by the military, and by the time he had been withdrawn from the front, he had felt disillusioned and had enough of fighting a war that he saw as pointless and immoral. He wasn't entirely sure where to go with his life next, and so had gone to take work as a janitor and a waiter - needing to take both jobs as he moved to the big city in Gary. These years were what he would regard as 'the most painful', having to do hard labour each day, as he felt lost and empty, with him mostly just reading books and playing sports at the local field. But then someone had reached out to him, someone from the McGovern campaign. He decided to try it out and give it a try, knocking on doors for the McGovern campaign during the general electionand helping organise people, later casting his ballot for George McGovern, even as Nixon swept every county in the state. He describes his work on the 1972 campaign as 'a political awakening', and to this day still carries much memorabilia from the campaign, with a large banner above his desk reading "Come Home America!"

He had continued to read and get involved in local organising during the gap between his time at the McGovern campaign and university, and in fact had met his future wife at a Service Employees International Union meeting. At the ripe old age of 23, the next academic year after his work in the McGovern campaign had concluded, he had been admitted to Purdue University in his home state, able to get a scholarship from playing college football, as he had been an avid fan of sports earlier in life and played on the local field between his time in the military and his time in college. He graduated with a doctoral degree in his law and economics course, and later became a professor at Indiana University.

In his time in Indiana University, he slowly became a celebrity activist professor and became a bulwark of American progressivism in the economic sphere, writing many papers critical of the building consensus around neoliberalism. However, what really put him in the public sphere was his opposition to apartheid and key role in the US anti-apartheid campaign, calling for boycotts against the South African government and even likened P.W. Botha to 'an African George Wallace', and had given many critical interviews on the subject, along with publishing many books that were quite well-read among the activist left.

During the time of Reagan, he also emerged as an opponent of the President, calling his economic policies 'ill-advised' and 'wrong-headed', providing many lucid papers showing how Reagan's policies would increase the deficit, the poverty rate and income inequality. Along with that, he stood by PATCO during the strike, saying that Reagan's destruction of the union 'would prove to be the beginning of one of the darkest eras for working people' and called for an immediate repeal of Taft-Hartley.

One of his controversies came with the AIDS epidemic. He had sounded the bell early on, saying that the Reagan administration's dismissing of AIDS would bring about a public health crisis of pre-vaccine proportions, along with making comments that many felt were too tolerant of LGB people at the time, starting a campaign for him to be dismissed at the university. While ultimately he had agreed to reduce his rhetoric on the issue to remain on the university, he had still stuck by what he said privately.

He had continued fighting for a variety of causes, including working on the Jackson campaign in 1984 and 1988, especially to do with civil and economic rights. Along with that, he had further increased his national profile through interviews and op-eds in newspapers across the country. In 1992 especially he had taken on a role in the not-Harkin campaign, offering his endorsement to him. During the general election, while he had originally considered an endorsement for not-Perot, he had eventually decided to endorse Clifford instead and run for Senate in Indiana along. While he had lost the primary, he had still begun to campaign for Cliffor around the Midwest, trying to help him along to depose George H.W. Bush, making clear and sharp attacks on economic matters. On election day, the entirety of the Midwest - excluding his home state of Indiana, which Clinton lost by 6 points (OOC: same as IRL) - had backed Clifford for the Presidency, and was appointed as a member of his economic transition team.

Clifford then appointed him for Secretary of Labor, as an olive branch to the left wing of the party. He accepted the nomination and was confirmed by the Senate. His flagship theme during his term was what he called 'A New Economy for a New Millennium', focusing on jobs retraining programmes and adapting American workers to the increasingly service-based economy, along with assisting people in jobs being displaced by economic development or outsourced to find new jobs. This helped to reduce unemployment by 0.2% during the Clifford years as an average and was widely hailed as a success, with many people still using the jobs retraining programme today. (OOC: this has no effect on post-Clifford economic stats)

However, behind the scenes, he was very dissatisfied. The entry into the WTO, the 1994 crime bill and the 1996 welfare bill had made him feel like he just entered a 'fourth Reagan administration', and so he had struck a deal. He would leave the cabinet quietly, and gain Clinton's endorsement for the open primary in Indiana's 1st. The deal was struck, and so he ran his campaign, winning the general election with 69% of the vote (OOC: unchanged from IRL.)

As soon as he was in Congress, he had clearly identified with the progressive voting bloc, voting against many of the Clinton's administration's second term's proposals, but was also a strong point against his impeachment, saying that impeachment was a 'moralist crusade by hypocrites', pointing to not-Gingrich's own accusations of infidelity. He had also endorsed Bill Bradley in the 2000 campaign, but also ran a campaign to encourage Nader voters to vote for Gore in swing states.

But when 9/11 came around, that was when he really decided to put up a fight. While he voted in favour of the AUMF in Afghanistan, he voted against the Iraq War and the PATRIOT Act (OOC note: the IRL representative for his district did the same), giving impassioned speeches on the House floor, using the maximum time for both. In fact, during the Iraq War vote, he had famously said: "I fought in Vietnam. You know what we did in Vietnam? Have you seen the pictures...The little girls running away from their village as the napalm destroys it? You know, there were people back then...You know what they said? The whole world is watching. That's what I want to tell you now, my fellow members of Congress. I tell you all, individually, each and every one of you...The whole world is watching. The whole world is watching! So, together, let's give a vote AGAINST the war, and AGAINST another war of moral shame!"

His opposition to the war put him in the national spotlight, and he soon became a hero for the anti-war activist wing of the party. He had faced reelection, being a Congressman, and faced off a challenge backed by many conservative Democrats and corporate lobby groups, winning only by 5 points less in a rematch of his election. (OOC: the IRL Representative, who had the same stance as Boyd, won by a greater margin than his previous election)

Meanwhile, on the economic side, he had also been a staunch detractor of the Bush Tax Cuts, calling them 'fundamentally economically illiterate', along with saying that No Child Left Behind was 'nowhere near enough to address the problems faced by American families and children.' In the 109th Congress, meanwhile, he also opposed BAPCA and the reauthorisation of the PATRIOT Act. During the 2006 Midterms, where he served as Chair of the CPC, he had helped Congressional leadership fight in swing states in the House and Senate, which had earnt him some respect within the party, even by moderates. He was a prolific bill writer in the 110th Congress, writing the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007, Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults Act of 2008, Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act of 2007, Iraq War De-Escalation Act of 2007 and Habeas Corpus Restoration Act of 2007. He also introduced major amendments to recession relief packages, including providing housing for those who have been foreclosed on, a job guarantee and so on. He also endorsed Senator Baharia and was in charge of his campaign in Indiana, helping him win the state through energising progressive energy in the state, and had built favour with the President during that time.

During the 111th Congress, he proposed and passed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010, the Fair Sentencing Act, the Dodd-Boyd Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (Same as IRL Dodd-Frank) and the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, along with being the House sponsor for the ACA. He also proposed, but did not pass the Universal Right to Vote by Mail Act, Public Option Act and Respect for Marriage Act. During the 112th Congress, he helped fight against the SOPA and PIPA Acts and proposed and passed the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act. During the 113th Congress, he proposed and passed the Pay Our Military Act, Credit Union Share Insurance Fund Parity Act, Drug Quality and Security Act, Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization Act of 2013 and Hydropower Regulatory Efficiency Act of 2013, along with a wide-ranging racial equality bill in the aftermath of the Ferguson protests. During the 114th Congress, he opposed the USA FREEDOM Act, and proposed and passed the Sexual Assault Survivors' Rights Act and Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act. During the 115th Congress, he opposed the Wolf Tax Cuts and the AHCA. He proposed and passed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 during this time. He also proposed, but failed to pass a bill to stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia. He endorsed Sam Baginski in 2016 - as a major surrogate for him and Levi Murphy in 2020, but switched after Kathleen Nez switched her endorsement.

Other Info: Progressive, primary stances are $15 an hour, universal employment and universal healthcare.

Current Committee Assignments are:
Chairman of the US House Committee on Education and Labor
Chairman of the United States House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies
Ordinary Member of the United States House Committee on the Budget

Appearance:

Thank you for applying. Here are a few small suggestions for the app:

1: It might probably be best to edit the date’s of Ashe’s governorship, merely in order to avoid any conflict with established history in the rp.

2: Similarly, as all of North Carolina’s Governors between 1992 and 2012 were Democrats, you might consider changing Ashe’s partisan affiliation. Perhaps he was first elected as a Democrat before registering as a Republican? Alternatively, you could also age him up and have him be first elected in 1984 in order to avoid changing his partisan affiliation.

I'll have him be the author of the American Steel First Act (since it was authored by the person he's displacing) and a member of the Steel Caucus. I think that's good.

what's the point of divergence for like legislation and stuff? I know it's Reagan for the politicians but is it the same for legislation? Or can I include in my bio that he wrote/sponsored like a random bill in let's say 2007 if his ORL counterpart he's loosely based on did it?

Character State of Origin: North Carolina
Character State of Residence: North Carolina
Character Party Affiliation: Democrat (1976 – 1998); Republican (1998 – present)
Main Strengths: Experienced, moderate/centrist type, easily makes friends with fellow Republican politicians and Democrats across the aisle, charismatic.
Main Weaknesses: Sometimes focuses too much solely on issues that his state faces more than national issues, poor debater about topics that make him hot headed and on topics he has a short temper when discussing, hates sitting in long meetings and his annoyance can often be seen on his face after he becomes tired of attending a lengthy meeting, often critical of those on the far left in regards to their opposing views; hated by pro-choice organizations.
Biography: Noah Jefferson Ashe was born to Benjamin and Regina Ashe on April 8, 1958 in Wilmington, NC. His father was a Presbyterian minister and his mother was a nurse. He has confirmed, on multiple occasions, that he is a direct descendant of Samuel Ashe, the ninth governor of North Carolina. He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1976, before going to attend NC State University and graduate with a B.A. in communications in 1980. He ran in cross country and track & field at both schools, having finished 10th in the state cross country meet his senior year of high school and finishing 4th in the state in the two mile race in track during his senior year of college.

After college, he'd go on to work for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. His first and only position there, starting in 1980, was as an admissions counselor in the undergraduate admissions office. While working at UNCW, he became the staff advisor for the College Democrats chapter students started there. He held his admissions counselor position until moving to Winston-Salem in 1982, to live with his fiance whom he'd met at a educational conference in Greensboro. He started working as an admissions counselor in the Undergraduate Admissions office at Wake Forest University in 1982 and married his fiance, Grace Anne McKimmick, in September of that year. While working at Wake Forest University, he'd pursue his master's degree at the school, graduating with an M.A. in media and communications in 1984. While working there, he became a staff advisor for the existing College Democrats chapter there.

In 1982, he ran against incumbent Republican Representative Harrison Oakley to represent North Carolina's 5th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. There was some debate whether he, as a 24-year-old, was allowed to run in the election; he put this debate to rest by releasing his birth certificate to the public, proving he would turn 25 two days before taking office. He lost the election and maintained his position at Wake Forest University. In 1984, he ran for the office again after Oakley announced he'd not be seeking re-election. Ashe won the Democratic primary with 57% of the vote before going on to win the general election with 51.4% of the vote. He took office on January 3, 1985.

In his first term in the House, he proved himself to be a moderate Democrat and his approval rating soared with his constituents. In 1986, he won re-election with 63% of the vote. He continued to make friends on capital hill and was good friends of both Democrats and Republicans. He made it clear that he believed the leftward swing of the Democratic party in 1960s, 70s, and 80s, was an error on the party's part and that the party should shift towards centrism. In 1988, he won re-election with 58% of the vote. That same year, he became the Vice Chair for Communications for the Democratic Leadership Council. In 1990, Ashe won re-election with 60% of the vote.

In December 1991, Ashe announced his candidacy for Governor of North Carolina in the 1992 election. Following years of building relationships with moderate and conservative Democrat leaders across North Carolina, he led a strong gubernatorial campaign. He won the primary with 56.7% of the vote and went on to win the general election with 55.3% of the vote. He took office on January 9, 1993.

As Governor, he leaned heavily on his wife's being a teacher and focused efforts of teaching standards and early childhood education in North Carolina. He introduced the Leap Start Program for pre-schoolers, which launched in 1995 and receiving funding from the state. The program sought to better prepare children for kindergarten and elementary school. He also introduced new standards and accountability measures for standardized testing across the state, implemented in 1995. Test scores would go up under these new standards, rising from 58% student proficiency in 1995 to 73% in 2001. Ashe also promoted technology and technology-based economic development and education. He saw increased funding for the North Carolina Biotechnology Center and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, allowing for them to quickly expand their technological capabilities. Ashe was also quite successful at bringing businesses to North Carolina.

In 1996, Ashe ran for re-election and won with 58.5% of the vote. In his second term, he oversaw 11 state executions. Ashe would also found the Institute for Emerging Issues in 1997, a public policy think tank, at North Carolina State University. In 1998, he'd found the Ashe Institute for Educational Leadership. The Institute seeks to ensure America's future through quality education and further seeks to work with governors, policymakers, and educational leaders in developing and implementing strategies for transforming public education.

On July 13, 1998, Ashe changed his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican. He told reporters, "I have prayed deeply and reflected immensely on my future as your elected representative and I have decided that I can no longer help my constituents as a Democrat. This morning, I changed my party registration to Republican and I will continue to serve the wonderful people of the great state of North Carolina to the fullness of my abilities." In a later interview, he suggests he was encouraged by friends in the North Carolina Republican Party and by his pastor.

Being term-limited to two consecutive terms, Ashe left the governor's office on January 6, 2001. He announced that he would not be running for governor again in 2004. Ashe found a job at NC State University as an adjunct professor teaching media and communications courses, starting with the beginning of the Spring 2001 term. In 2002, he became the communications director for the North Carolina Republican Party while still teaching courses part time at NC State. In 2003, he was convinced to run for the upcoming 2004 Senate race as the incumbent would be running for the presidency (and would go on to lose). In December 2003, he announced his candidacy.

In the 2004 Republican primary, he won in packed field with 37% of the vote. He went on to win the general election with 53% of the vote. He took office on January 3, 2005. His time in the Senate has been rather dull, though he has been the primary sponsor of 15 bills that have been enacted during his time in the Senate. All bills that were passed irl up to 2018 were passed in the RP. And you can add 'minor' bills in your bio.

Excellent App, ACCEPTED . However I would recommend throwing something about steel specifically in there.

I'll have him be the author of the American Steel First Act (since it was authored by the person he's displacing) and a member of the Steel Caucus. I think that's good.

great stuff
