Biography: Born on an American Military Base in Guam on December 10, 1978, John Garfield III’s childhood was emotionally rough. His father, a U.S. Army officer to the core and a devout Christian, instilled military and religious discipline into both of his children, expecting the both of them to grow up and enter the armed services as he did and harshly retaliating against any sign of “weakness” in his children with emotional and occasionally physical abuse, the boys’ mother, a quiet and shy woman who had been with their father since high school, powerless to stop him. John’s upbringing, moving from base to base across the world without the stable friendship of anyone but his brother, weighed heavily on him, a volatile situation only exacerbated after his father’s unwilling retirement from the military due to a stroke when John was 15. Returning from West Germany, where he spent 3 years of his life at 2 different bases, to his first stable living environment in Toledo, Ohio, John was nevertheless deprived of a sense of stability, his father’s mental state deteriorating significantly and leading to even worse treatment of him and his brother. Taking opportunities to get out of the house wherever he could in frustration, John joined his high school’s debate team and soccer team, excelling in both pursuits and for the first time discovering his natural knack for public speaking, beforehand stifled by his father’s overbearance. Spending most of his time at teammates’ houses in his junior and senior years, John began to neglect his more introverted little brother, who was often left at home and at the mercy of their father, and instead focused on becoming his own man, excelling in school with the help of teachers who took an interest in his situation and deciding to attend college for Biology, with the goal of becoming a physician.

Applying to a variety of schools far away from home, Garfield would happily jump onto an excellent financial aid offer from Columbia University in New York, abruptly spurring his “hometown” shortly after highschool graduation and leaving his family behind without a means to contact him easily. At Columbia, John performed well, throwing himself into a variety of on campus activities, ultimately becoming captain of the University’s soccer team and joining the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, in addition to becoming active with Columbia University’s College Republicans. In his senior year, Garfield was placed under internal investigation by school authorities after homophobic epithets and a slogan identifying his fraternity as the perpetrators were spraypainted onto the vehicle of a lesbian student. Upon the investigation’s conclusion, Garfield was given a documented warning, having been present at the time of the incident but not a direct perpetrator, and was instructed to apologize to the student, which he did. The victim declined to press charges after two of Garfield’s classmates were expelled in connection with the incident. Garfield was briefly engaged to a fellow student after two years of dating, but the two called off their engagement during his senior year, partially as a result of the incident. Despite this, Garfield graduated in good academic standing and took steps to attend medical school at Columbia following his graduation.

Beginning classes and getting a part time job assisting staff in city hall under Mayor (not-Guiliani), Garfield was just outside of City Hall on September 11, 2001, watching in horror among other bystanders as smoke billowed from the first tower, and as a result witnessing the moment the second plane hit the WTC. Fleeing the scene in the direct aftermath, Garfield returned home to his apartment and had what he now describes as a “nervous breakdown”, being consumed by feelings of horror and shock as he watched the nation come under attack. Having a massive, unexpected, and debatably misguided epiphany, Garfield was overcome with a feeling of failure and betrayal of his family, his father’s conditioning taking hold as he walked into a recruiting station and declared his intention to “protect his country”. Garfield would abandon medical school and join the United States Army after contacting and informing his mother, enlisting as a combat medic.

After completing basic and specialized training, Garfield would be deployed to Afghanistan, serving as a line medic and treating the wounded outside of combat, largely attending to men at base in Kabul and occasionally dealing with casualties. Shortly after arriving he would meet Meredith Logan, a fellow enlistee and vehicle repair technician on base. The two would marry a year into their service.

In 2003, Garfield’s unit would be deployed to the frontlines in Iraq when the war kicked off, his wife requesting a mission transfer to be with him, which was granted. This time, however, Garfield would see combat immediately. Present during the capture of Talil airfield and the 3rd Infantry Division’s advance over the Euphrates river, Garfield would be placed under direct fire from defending Iraqi forces during the latter. According to battlefield accounts, Garfield rendered medical aid to a member of his unit shot through the throat with a long-range rifle before himself being struck in the shoulder. Garfield attempted to continue to render aid, but was pulled aside and tended to by another medic. Following the conclusion of the battle, Garfield was briefly hospitalized before reentering service. In 2004, Garfield was again placed in direct harm’s way, present at the Second Battle of Fallujah. Garfield rendered direct aid to a number of his compatriots under fire and is credited with saving the life of Corporal Mark Brezynski, who would go on to compete in the paralympic games as a double amputee. Garfield also witnessed two members of his unit die of the grenade blast that maimed Corporal Brezynski, with battlefield records indicating that Garfield witnessed a friend, Specialist Xavier Lopez, be “completely dismembered” in taking the worst of the blast, a scene that would scar him for life and burn itself into his memory. Garfield sustained light injuries to his neck and left arm as a result of shrapnel from the blast. Garfield has described the experience in Fallujah as “hell on earth” and describes the battle as the most pivotal moment of his life. In the immediate aftermath of the battle, Garfield would be described as “robotic” and “removed from the situation”, leading to a psychiatric evaluation. Sergeant Garfield was subsequently diagnosed with a concussion and PTSD and honorably discharged, his wife requesting a discharge as well. Her request was granted, causing Garfield considerable stress and introducing additional feelings of guilt as he felt his own suffering was prematurely ending his wife’s military career.

Upon permanently returning to the United States after years overseas, Garfield settled down in Warren, Michigan, a large suburb of Detroit and the birthplace of his wife. A month after the couple’s return, Garfield was faced with more terrible news in the form of his brother’s reportedly drug-linked suicide. With numerous traumatic events bubbling to the surface and overwhelming him, Garfield would attempt suicide himself, being discovered by his wife in their bedroom closet after a botched hanging. After being hospitalized in the aftermath, Garfield was placed on heavy antidepressants, began routinely seeing a psychiatrist, and joined a support group for traumatized vets, these steps doing much to bring his mental health issues under control. With a newfound perspective on life (and politics) forming in the aftermath of this trauma, Garfield found work within the VA’s Michigan offices assisting other vets in having their benefits claims processed. This was the nail in the coffin for Garfield’s former republicanism, having been radicalized against American intervention abroad during the war and radicalized on the issue of universal healthcare upon seeing said war’s human aftermath, these major changes alienating him from the Burke-era Republican Party and driving him into the arms of Democrats, who he would begin volunteering for on a local level alongside his wife.

In mid-2006 he would leave his office job and return to medicine, this time as a paramedic, wanting to return to a hands-on form of work as opposed to clerical duties. Here he would excel, devoting himself to both his work and his burgeoning political activism, dividing his time between saving lives and working for the campaign of incumbent Michigan Governor (Not-Granholm). In 2007, he was brought onto the campaign of Congressman [Not Kucinich], who he backed vociferously and actively whipped up local support for. He would stay active on the campaign until it was suspended, at which point he would begin volunteering for the Democratic nominee, Rashid Baharia.

In 2009, Garfield would consider a run for local office with the support of neighbors, friends, and colleagues, before Michigan’s 9th state senate district was vacated by the incumbent due to a scandal. The resulting field of candidates would be numerous and qualified, and Garfield would throw his hat into the ring as a “pragmatic paramedic” and a vet without patience for career politicians who wanted to “sustain the status quo”. Garfield’s campaign would be bolstered by endorsements from veterans organizations and healthcare unions, but his candidacy was damaged by the emergence of his college scandal, which he profusely apologized for. He would narrowly and somewhat surprisingly win the Democratic primary in the blue district with 27.8% of the vote, his rhetoric moderating in the midst of the Tea Party wave while his actual policy remained progressive. He would overwhelmingly win election against his Republican opponent in the solidly blue district.

In the Republican-dominated State Senate, Garfield would propose a wide array of economically progressive legislation, from an expanded medicaid program to wage increases and labor protections, though his public media persona would continue to be that of a moderate and pragmatic democrat. He would frequently attend meetings with Republican colleagues and befriend many of them, using these relationships to his advantage and attaching himself onto their popular proposals. In 2012, Garfield would be responsible for a bipartisan breakthrough on the issue of medical marijuana in Michigan, putting together a task force of Republicans and Democrats to examine all available data on the issue and commit to following through with its findings. While Republican leadership was reluctant to address such an issue, Garfield’s smooth talking and personal maneuvering made them more amenable, and a rousing speech on the floor of the state senate about his military service and the good that he’d seen medicinal marijuana do for wounded service members served to narrowly get the bill across the finish line, being signed into law by the Republican governor after much speculation that he may veto it. This would raise Garfield’s profile, though he would decline to seek statewide office in 2014.

Instead, he would mount a bold and unexpected primary challenge against the incumbent representative from Michigan’s 9th Sammy Sirin, a long-serving member of the House approaching 32 years in the body. Having been recently redistricted into the 9th, Garfield attacked the congressman from the left, painting him as a comfortable career politician disconnected from the issues facing his constituents and propped up by the political establishment, campaigning predominantly on universal healthcare and term limits. Garfield leaned into his military service and bipartisan record, but met resistance from local democratic party branches and statewide officials, who endorsed Sirin. The DCCC would reach out to Garfield and politely encourage him to “wait his turn”, a sentiment which infuriated the young state senator and caused him to respond with choice words that crossed the line from terse into downright insulting. After significant spending in the primary, Garfield would lose the primary with 39% of the vote, leaving him without an office.

After his loss, Garfield flirted with the idea of starting a non-profit, but ultimately decided to gear up for another campaign against Sirin, doubling down on progressive economic messaging while being quieter on social issues. This would coincide with the ascendancy of the Baginski Campaign, with Garfield endorsing Baginski the day of his announcement and securing a position within the campaign’s Michigan team. Railing against the establishment, Garfield’s campaign against Sirin gained much more momentum the second go-around, his status as an early and outspoken Baginski endorser earning him new allies and endorsements while Sirin paralleled his actions with an endorsement of Diana Clifford. The primary would devolve into a proxy battle between Clifford and Baginski, with lines being drawn in the sand and heavy shots being fired, with Sirin’s brother, a now former U.S. Senator, and Diane Clifford herself, appearing alongside Sirin during the campaign. Garfield was similarly endorsed by Baginski himself, who he appeared alongside during the campaign, and he received the support of several progressive national organizations. Union support was split, however, and Garfield was expected to lose heading into the night. However, Senator Baginski’s upset victory in the Michigan primary proved to benefit Garfield significantly, his challenge against Sirin scraping by to victory despite intervention from the DCCC, receiving 50.4% of the vote to the incumbent’s 49.6% and serving as a significant upset, briefly covered by news media in conjunction with Baginski’s win. In his victory speech, Garfield would claim victory on behalf of the “fed up” working class and promise to serve as an independent voice in congress. Garfield would subsequently be endorsed by his former opponent in the general election and defeat his Republican opponent with 59% of the vote.

Once in Congress, Garfield would cosponsor bills to legalize marijuana nationally and sign onto Medicare-For-All legislation, firmly establishing himself on the left wing of the party in practice while constructing a pragmatic populist public image on tv and in the papers. Garfield would consistently criticize President Wolf’s more hawkish tendencies while lauding his more dovish actions, and he would routinely vote against bills authorizing or reauthorizing large scale military spending. His rhetoric on trade would mirror Wolf’s, emphasizing the need for protective trade policy that put “Americans First” while at the same time criticizing Wolf for not having a “steady, competent hand” in his negotiations with foreign nations. Garfield also called for a national infrastructure bill, calling it the nation’s “largest priority” and expressing disappointment at President Wolf’s “complete failure” to act on said priority.

In 2018, Garfield endorsed and campaigned for his former state senate colleague Lori Turner in the 2018 Gubernatorial Race, and would also endorse a number of out of state progressive primary challengers to incumbent democrats in safe districts. He would face opposition in the Democratic primary for his own seat from a relative of former congressman Sirin, but the competitiveness of the primary challenge was minimal, with Garfield securing 70% of the party’s vote in his district. He would be reelected in the general election with 61% of the vote.

In 2019, Garfield announced he was considering a run for the United States Senate in Michigan upon the announcement of the incumbent Senator’s retirement. Garfield would enter the race formally in mid-2019 and face off against a handful of other qualified democrats who had not held elected office in the primary, ultimately securing 54% of the statewide primary vote. Garfield’s campaign has been focused on infrastructure, universal healthcare, economic protectionism, and higher wages for workers in Michigan. He voted for the bi-partisan stimulus bill and has praised both Congressional Democrats and the Tawney White House for their commitment to providing relief to American workers.

Character State of Origin: Louisiana
Character State of Residence: Louisiana
Character Party Affiliation: Republican (1983-Present)
Main Strengths: Passionate speaker, Very well versed, Liked by the wolfists and Tea Party movement.
Main Weaknesses: Has a history of iffy comments, has been known to make up facts, bashes moderate "cookie cutter republicans"

Biography: (Minimum 2-3 paragraphs): Alberta Joy Broussard was born on April 26th, 1965 to a lower middle class family on the outskirts of Schriever, Louisiana. Her father (Geraud Broussard) was a fisherman, catching catfish in the local bayou, and her mother (Maria Kritz) was a stay at home mother who took care of her, and her three other sisters. As a child Broussard was very intelligent, often being the top of the class in all of her subjects and aceing all of her exams, she was also raised very conservatively by her mother, who was always fusing about her acting “like a lady” and being “prim and proper”. Her father and mother were both Cajun and made it a habit to preserve her cultural identity, by making her and her sisters speak french when they were in the house, and wearing traditional Cajun clothing.

In her highschool years, Broussard got into politics, taking debate classes and writing politically motivating essays. She would constantly bash then president Jimmy Carter on being weak on crime and foreign policy. During this time Broussard continued excelled at her school work getting a 4.0 grade average by the time she graduated in 1983. After her graduation Broussard was given a scholarship to Princeton University where she got a Masters in Political Science in 1990. During her time in college and the year after she graduated Broussard would be very active on the conservative scene, being involved in several rallies and protest against liberal supported issues, Gaining her a small bit of publicity when some of these rallies were picked up by the news. During her time he college she met Michael Laundry, a medical student from an old money family and married him in 1985. in 1991, with the help of her husband, Broussard ran for the open state senate seat in district 20 unopposed as the only other challenger to the seat forfeited months before the election. In her first 6 years in the senate Broussard became infamous in the senate for being a bulldog against the policies of current governor (not-Edwin Edwards), especially against his pushing for casino gambling in Louisiana, which she stated “Would cause an influx of organized crime in the local cities while the fat cats in the governor’s circle get rich off the backs of the taxpayers that have to keep this immoral practice of embezzlement afloat”.

In 1995 Broussard ran for Governor and got fifth in the jungle primaries with 3% of the vote and was even considered a major candidate, thanks to televised interviews she did with local Louisiana networks during her hate campaign against (not-Edwin Edwards). After she went back to her work as a state senator and would be directly responsible for directing the creation of many bills implemented by governor (Not-Mike Foster), her most famous ones being fostering bills that ended state affirmative action and set-aside programs, tort reform bills, and helping create the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, and expanded the Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS).

In 2003 Broussard ran again for Louisiana governor, this time with great success, beating out three republicans including presumptive nominee, state Secretary of Health and Hospitals, (Not-Bobby Jindal). In the General election Broussard was against Lieutenant Governor (Not-Kathleen Blanco), which Broussard saw as an easy opponent. Having never been challenged for political office ever in her life, Broussard became overly confident about her winning the election, often bashed by the media for exuding an overwhelming amount of fear mongering in her speeches. In Broussard’s speeches she spoke in great detail about her achievements in the Louisiana senate, and how she always fought against the “immoral democratic establishment” to better help the Louisiana people. Despite her absolute confidence in winning the election, she lost to (Not-Kathleen Blanco) winning 48% of the vote to Blanco’s 52%.

Because the Louisiana constitution states that a state senator can only serve 12 consecutive years Broussard was unable to keep her seat and decided to take a step back from politics and start focusing on her personal life. During her stint of not being in public office, Broussard would become a recurring guest political commentator on local Louisiana television stations, complaining about Blanco’s handling of Hurricane Katrina and Rita.

During this cooldown period in her career, Broussard was becoming a household name in Louisiana homes and she decided to use this to her advantage in the 2010 Lieutenant Governor special election. In the election Broussard uplayed her life story to make her seem like an anti-elitist rags to riches candidate, a tactic that worked beautifully winning the general election by 57% of the vote. As Lieutenant Governor Broussard was seen as the bane of (not-Jindal’s) policies, trying hard to block him on every step of the way, all the while preaching about how "(not-Jindal) is a disgrace to the conservative name, a liberal in a mask, and a truly incompetent leader".

In the 2015 Louisiana Gubernatorial election Broussard decided not to run, as she wanted to run for the US senate in 2016, however she was vocal about her overall disgust with the democratic nominee; Russell Long, stating he is “A blatant example of a man with no ambition trying to squeeze his way into a position of power by saying pretty words, while at the same time limiting the people's freedom in the name of socialism”.

In her last year of being a Lieutenant Governor, Broussard used all the power invested in her to be a thorn in Governor Long’s side, being the most vocal proponent against him by far, and constantly trying to bring him down a peg in popularity. In 2016 Broussard ran for US senator again running on an anti-elitist platform, as well as criticizing the other republican candidates for being too soft and money hungry. Early on in her campaign Broussard publicly supported Wolf in his 2016 bid to be president, stating him as a “Exemplary example of true conservative in both attitude and conviction, with a honesty to just tell it like it is”. Her anti-elitist rhetoric matched with her endorsement of Wolf, was just enough to bolster her to the top in the jungle primary gaining 21% of the vote then going on to easily beat her democratic opponent with 60% of the vote.

In her 3 years in the Senate, Broussard Co-sponsored important legislation such as the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which failed to pass to the senate, the Financial CHOICE Act of 2017 which also failed to pass, FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act of 2017 which did pass, and was signed by President Wolf. Also during her time in the senate Broussard has been an avid supporter of President Wolf and his policies while criticizing more mainstream republican agendas and proponents, such as being an early criticizer of both Paulson and Richardson in the republican primaries. In November of 2019, Broussard officially endorsed Bernie Porter for president, stating that “Porter is the strong heavy handed conservative we need at the helm of the republican party, to help us steer back to the direction of morality, which our party has seemed to have forgotten over the years”.

After Porter lost the nomination to Richardson, Broussard immediately claimed that the GOP establishment was against him stating: "Never before have I felt so betrayed by someone I felt I could trust. The GOP has failed America, by allowing liberal RINOs to defeat true blooded conservatives. Despite what happens now let it be known that on behalf of the state of Louisiana, I will not let this injustice continue."
Other Info:

1980's: Several news clips of Broussard protesting gay rights legislation, where she repeatedly calls gay people "fags". Has apologized for this conduct when she ran in 2016.
2005: Called (not-Kathleen Blanco) a bitch on live television has not apologized for this incident
2016: Called (not-Marco Rubio) the "American Fidel Castro" on her campaign trail, has not apologized
2019: said Suraj Shah should go back to Bollywood on fox news, has not apologized
2019: Called Velez " an insignificant brown stain" on Fox News after the first Democratic Debates, which the democrats called blatantly racist, to which she claimed they were purposefully being overdramatic and hostile

It might be best, considering how the Republican Party now has a presumptive nominee, that a small paragraph is added to finish the biography, merely covering Broussard’s thoughts on Porter’s defeat in the primaries and her plans moving forward.

Character State of Residence: Alabama
Character Party Affiliation: Democratic Party
Main Strengths: Strong convictions, empathetic, strong constituency ties, well-liked by his colleagues
Main Weaknesses: Uncharismatic, most vulnerable US Senator and too liberal for his state, naive, soft spoken
Biography:
Gordon Lowder Callahan Jr. was born in 1971, near Huntsville, Alabama. His father was the newly elected Alabama Supreme Court Justice, and his mother was a homemaker and his father’s high school sweetheart. Callahan grew up in the small town of Stevenson, near the Georgia line. He went to elementary school there as a kid. When his father was elected to the United States Senate as a so-called ‘Anti-Wallace Democrat’ in 1978, he ended up at the St. Marks Preparatory School in Washington, D.C. Despite that, he still spent his summers in at the family home in Stevenson, which he still maintains today.

Callahan was quiet and bookish, and did well in school. He was very close to his father, who grew into a giant in Alabama politics as the years passed. Gordon Callahan Sr. started out in the Senate as a hardline conservative Democrat, but slowly grew into more of a liberal. By the end of his political career, opposing NAFTA, breaking with other Southern Democrats to vote against Clarence Thomas, and opposing the prominent display of the Confederate flag in municipal spaces (this is what happened with Senator Howard Heflin, the Alabama Democrat Callahan Sr is replacing). This political transformation inspired the younger Callahan, who saw the importance in voting your conscience and serving your state even when not politically expedient.

In 1989, Callahan attended Harvard University, where he had a concentration in political science. Immediately following his graduation in 1993, thanks to his father’s connections, Callahan was able to secure a direct commission into the United States Naval Reserves as an intelligence officer. His career was rather uninteresting, aside from a deployment on the SS George Washington, a Nimitz class carrier stationed in Virginia, and a deployment to Rota, Spain in 1995 to support US Naval operations during the ongoing Yugoslavia Crisis. In 1997, concurrent with the tail end of his service, Callahan began law school at the University of Alabama. In 1999, he retired from the Naval Reserves as a full lieutenant, and attained his law degree in 2000.

At at the encouragement of his father, Callahan returned to DC where he took a position as an associate at the prestigious Allenmore and Baird firm, specializing in contract law. In 2005, he was promoted to partner, thanks to his meticulous work and large, successful caseload. In 2009, he left the private sector, and was appointed as Counsel to the Senate Armed Services Committee. The position involved giving legal advice on committee issues, but most of the work was to lead a team of lawyers in reviewing and approving government contracts with civilian contractors, military servicemembers, and most importantly, with large defense corporations like Boeing and Northrop Grumman. The work proved fruitful for Callahan, who was well liked by both the majority members and the minority members for his diligence.

In 2012, Callahan made the decision to return to Alabama due to his elderly father’s failing health. He took it upon himself to help make his father’s last few years comfortable, and he worked as a professor at the University of Alabama School of Law. After his father passed away in 2014, Callahan was left with more time on his hands, so he handled some pro bono work on behalf of the Alabama Democratic Party. Despite his background in contract law, Callahan was successful in assisting candidates for state legislature and other offices with navigating complication and often exclusionary electoral law. This re-established the link between the Callahan family and Democratic machine. During this time he also met a fellow law professor and Democratic Party activist named Trisha, to whom he is now engaged. After 2016, Callahan was floated as a potential candidate for the 2018 Alabama gubernatorial race, something he strongly considered. However, when (Not-Sessions) vacated the Senate and a special election was announced, Callahan made the decision to take the plunge and run for his father’s old seat, making a calculated decision based on the weakness of the Republican field and the unpopularity of the new Republican presidential administration.

Callahan ran a fairly transparent campaign. He was open with his relatively liberal views, but emphasized “dinner table issues.” Many expected he would inevitably lose, but Callahan assured skeptics his campaign could in fact win. The skeptics started to believe him a bit more when a controversial Republican won the nomination in an upset, and they became even more convinced when a massive scandal broke about the Republican that circulated in national media. Thanks to success with turning out the black vote thanks to his trusted family name and father’s record, and thanks to his ability to flip suburban white voters with his easygoing/nonthreteaning demeanor and accomplished record as a top nonpartisan Senate staffer, Callahan managed the unthinkable, winning the senate race 49.97% to his opponent’s 48.34%.

Once seated in the Senate, Callahan was welcomed with open arms. The Democrats were pleased to flip the seat, and the Republicans were pleased to not have to deal with his former opponent being a US Senator. He remains well liked, especially by those who served concurrently with his father. Callahan has maintained the voting record of a mainline liberal, not at all the Blue Dog one would expect to represent a state in the Deep South. He has held the Democratic line on most votes in the 116th Congress. He has written and sponsored quite a bit of legislation, which seek to do a number of things, ranging from bills allocating more resources in schools to teach children to be financially literate, to increasing farm subsidies, to permanently reauthorizing mandatory funding programs for historically Black colleges and and other minority-serving institutions.

Other Info: He is of Scots-Irish and German descent, is a (privately) lapsed Baptist, is a bachelor.

I don't think it's fair to hold an inexperienced, clearly ESL player to the same standard as San tbh.

Edit: I meant to say ESL (English as Second Language), not ASL, my bad.

Can someone explain in short the changes of this TL compared to our TL? I am considering making an app, but I would rather not read 3-4 threads and thousands upon thousands of posts.

Also, general outline for app would be: Asian-American, veteran in Iraq who saw combat, center-left Democrat (leaning left on economics and social issues, but somewhat moderate to right on national security and foreign policy). He would be Representative. What would be a good state for such a character to be Representative? California?

The only thing different about IRL politics before Trump is the names of politicians. Everyone after Reagan simply becomes [not-X], i.e., [not-Santorum], [not-Newsom], etc. Note that there are some who are named, the most important being President Obama is known as President Rashid Baharia, President George W. Bush is known as President John J. Burke, and President Donald Trump is known as President Arnold Wolf.

Now on to the important changes: Arnold Wolf resigned from the presidency in 2019 because he was suffering from brain cancer. His VP, Richard Tawney, is the current President, and a bit of a lame duck. Wolf's resignation caused both parties to have a presidential primary for the upcoming 2020 election. For Republicans, the main candidates were Nathaniel Richardson— think Mitt Romney (known as Ron Mitter in this timeline)— and Bernard Porter— think Richard Spencer. Richardson is the presumptive nominee following a critical win in the state of Georgia. For the Democrats, the main candidates are Jillian Dayton and Levi Murphy, with Murphy the further left of the two, essentially representing the Bernie (known as Baginski in this timeline) wing of the party. Following former President Baharia's endorsement of Dayton, she is shaping up to win the nomination.

And that's pretty much all the major events. There are lots of competitive Senate races, but you don't really need to know about those to jump in.

I'm going to have Clay submit this to the docket since Volker approves. Last call for co-sponsors.

Child Tax Credit Expansion Act
Sponsor: Crawford Clay [R TX-4]
House Co-Sponsors: Chip Renfus [R MS-4]
Senate Co-Sponsors: Gordon Callahan [D AL], Andrew Gardner [R GA]

Overview: The current federal tax code, while allotting significant tax exemptions to high- and low-income families, provides no such substantial exemptions to middle-income families, effectively imposing a penalty on marriage and parenthood for these tax brackets. This amendment is designed to create a fairer tax code and alleviate the tax burden on middle-income households.

Amendment
The following amendment will be applied to Section 24 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.

a) In subsection (a), "$3,000" shall be substituted for "$1,000."

b) In subsection (b) (2), "$400,000" shall be substituted for "$110,000"; and "$200,000" shall be substituted for both "$75,000" and "$55,000".

c) In subsection (d) (1) (B) (i), "$2,500" shall be substituted for "$3,000".

d) The following new subsection shall be added at the end:
(h) Partial credit for certain other dependents:
(A) In general: The credit determined under subsection (a) after the application of paragraph (2) shall be increased by $500 for each dependent of the taxpayer (as defined in section 152) other than a qualifying child as described in subsection (c).

(B) Exception for certain non-citizens: Subparagraph (A) shall not apply with respect to any individual who would not be a dependent if subparagraph (A) of section 152 (b) (3) were applied without regard to all that follows "resident of the United States".

e) The following new subsection shall be added at the end:
(i) Social security number required:
(A) In general: No credit shall be allowed under this section to a taxpayer with respect to any qualifying child unless the taxpayer includes the social security number of such child on the return of tax for the taxable year.
(B) Social security number: For the purposes of this subsection, the term "social security number" means a social security number issued to a citizen of the United States by the Social Security Administration before the due date for such a return of tax.

NOTE: Effective Date
The amendment under this section shall apply to taxable years beginning after December 31, 2020.
This bill is then honorably presented to the United States House of Representatives for consideration in order to equalize the federal tax code and is backed by Crawford Clay on (insert date).

Character State of Origin: California
Character State of Residence: California
Character Party Affiliation: Democrat
Main Strengths: Decorated war veteran, policy wonk, handsome
Main Weaknesses: Considered too progressive by centrists and too centrist by progressives, his views on foreign policy align closer to the neocon wing of the GOP, freshman in Congress
Biography:

Michael Chang was born in April 12, 1984 to a family of Taiwanese immigrants. His parents emigrated to the U.S. in the 1960s, and met while they were both in graduate school at the University of California, Berkeley. He had a rather happy childhood, though the pressure put on him by his parents to excel academically meant that he focused too much on studying to the detriment of his social skills. He enrolled at Brown University in 2002, where he majored in economics and political science, graduating in 2006. While at Brown University, he joined the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps and received an officer's commission in the U.S. Navy after graduation.

He received orders to Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S) at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado. After six months of training, Michael graduated with BUD/S class 264. He completed SEAL qualification training in June 2008. Michael served five tours of duty, in both Iraq and Afghanistan. During his second deployment in Afghanistan in 2011, Michael was aboard a U.S. CH-47D Chinook military helicopter that was ambushed by Taliban militia. He was the only soldier to survive the crush, albeit with a grievous injury on his left leg. For a whole hour, he fought off five Taliban insurgents, killing four of them and injuring the fifth. When he was found, Michael was unconscious but alive. For his heroism, he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal. In his fourth tour, again in Afghanistan, he survived another ambush by Taliban militia, killing six enemy combatants. He was awarded a second Bronze Star Medal.

Michael retired from military service in 2016 with the rank of lieutenant commander. For the next two years, he would author articles at local newspapers on veterans' affairs and, later on, foreign policy. He would also host a podcast which would discuss the domestic problems America was facing. This, along with his profile as a veteran, allowed him to gain broader recognition and to build ties with local politicians and activists. He decided to run for the office of Representative of District 9 of California in the 2018 elections.

He run on a center-left platform. He supported the creation of a public option for health insurance, with the aim of expanding health insurance coverage to 97% of Americans, instituting a federal carbon tax while reducing income tax on lower-class families, raising the minimum wage, implementing a liberal immigration and pushing for criminal justice reform. At the same time, he supported increased support for veterans, support for NATO and a policy of containment of China along with recognition of Taiwanese independence. He also spoke out against cancel culture, arguing that it was the wrong way to change minds. He was successfully elected into office.

He is happily married with two kids, both boys.
He is nondenominational Christian

Other Info:

He is happily married with two kids, both boys.
He is nondenominational Christian

In 1995 Broussard ran for Governor and got fifth in the jungle primaries with 9% of the vote and was even considered a major candidate, thanks to televised interviews she did with local Louisiana networks during her hate campaign against (not-Edwin Edwards).
