Character State of Origin: New York
Character State of Residence: New Hampshire
Character Party Affiliation: Republican
Main Strengths: Likeable, good at talking (speeches, debates, town halls), appealing to voters, wealthy and can finance his own campaign
Main Weaknesses: Not politically adept, easily manipulated by more politically experienced people, hasn't formed his own brand or name, no roots in New Hampshire
Biography:

Born into a well-off family in Long Island, Malcolm received top education and graduated with honors from Dartmouth, and then University of Pennsylvania Business School in Wharton. He worked mid-level management positions in many firms after college, but found that work to be unrewarding and he felt like he could be doing more with his life. He went back to grad school and got a Masters Degree in journalism on top of his MBA, and he and a friend, Stu Hortonson, a computer BA from MIT, founded All-America News in 1990. AAN was one of the first internet news stations, and covered news from New York and the surrounding area. They achieved great success, and by the late 90s, expanded their business to the rest of the United States, moving out of Stu's basement and into a building in downtown New York City.

All-America News grew even more during the early 2000s. When the US invaded Afghanistan in 2001, All-America news took a very pro-war stance, even when public support of the war dropped. They gained popularity among conservatives but lost popularity with liberals, so All-America News changed its stance for everything from being nonpartisan to being conservative. AAN supported not-Bush's reelection campaign and Malcolm even met not-Bush, and they became fast friends. Malcolm began to spend more time in Washington DC, and moved the All-America News office there in 2005. Stu Hortenson left the company in 2007, over health issues, and left full control to Malcolm, who became richer and richer. Malcolm bought a house in New Hampshire and spent much of his time skiing there.

In 2012, Malcolm began to lose interest in the company. He announced his decision to leave in November of that year, and in 2013 he gave control of it over to his son, Hugo Malcolm Jr. Malcolm retired to New Hampshire and lived there comfortably, though he was restless, being only in his mid-fifties. In 2015, he built a small luxury ski lodge called Malcolm Hills, in which he began hosting donors for Republican campaigns and conferences. In 2016 his lodge hosted the RNC winter meeting, and he grew his connections to the RNC. He became the New Hampshire Republican Party's biggest non-corporate donor, and when he decided to run for Senate they were more than happy to assist. He officially announced his campaign in 2019, stating that he wanted to "guide New Hampshire through its next years of progress".

Nice start, you'll need to flesh out some more about what happened between 2012 and 2020.

Would Utah be a good state for a more traditional, intellectual conservative Senator?

Two things.

Pro-Life is not within New Hampshire's doctrine of political views, yes it has pro-life elements, but a "Government has no business" doctrine is applied by most of it's GOP, so I'd be conscious of that (although I could be wrong on this, I'm 99% sure NH is a bastion of pro-choice Republicanism).

Otherwise, stop bumping this unless we miss it for a few more days to come.

I'm going to defer to Sanabel for an official first review given that he is the expert on New England.

Character Information Sheet

NS Nation Name: Cob's Mom

Character Name: Wyatt Raphael Hagerty

Character Gender: boy

Character Age: 75 (born May 2nd, 1945)

Character Height: 6'1

Character Weight: 152 pounds

Character Position/Role/Job:
- United States Senator from Utah (since 1993)
- Davis County Attorney (1987-1993)
- Attorney with the Utah Attorney General's Investigations Dept. (1974-1986)
- Utah Supreme Court Clerk (1970-1974)

Appearance: Patrick Leahy

Character State of Origin: Charleston, West Virginia

Character State of Residence: Layton, Utah

Character Party Affiliation: Republican

Main Strengths:
- Long record of public service; pretty popular across the board in Utah and able to attract crossover support
- Respected conservative thought leader and intellectual, a solid policy wonk
- Canny political operative and dealmaker, as well as being something of a kingmaker in Utah political circles.
- Well-liked by most of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and is particularly close to his fellow Utahns, Dawson Abernathy and Everitt Colbert, as well as Ron Mitter and the late Jeff McDowd
- Very good at retail politics as opposed to rally politics
- Although he was nearly knocked off the ballot, his successful reelection campaign in 2010 is a thing of political legend, and demonstrated his broad approval among Utah's base
- Devout and unquestionable Mormon

Main Weaknesses:
- Nearly ousted from the ballot in 2010 by Tea Party activists; while he was able to retain his seat it set him at odds with the party's populist base. Generally, he's out of step with the modern GOP, seen as a relic of the Clifford-Burke days. His tendency to befriend Democrats such as Vinnie Diehl and his votes for the Iraq War and the Burke bailout have been albatrosses around his neck for years. His vote to save Bahariacare is less an albatross and more a Blue Whale.
- Boring, nerdy, softspoken
- Has attacked Wolf in the past and refused to kiss the ring after; while not a Never-Wolfist he was unafraid to criticize the former President in explicit terms
- Some bad calls as County Attorney led to 4 innocent people being sent to jail; higher courts reversed these
- Insidery as shit

Biography: Wyatt Hagerty was born in Charleston, West Virginia, to Ansel Hagerty (1900-1979) and his wife Genevieve Hagerty, nee Ashford (1915-2009), devout Mormons. Wyatt is the youngest of 6 children. His father was a WWI veteran and mortician, his mother a homemaker. Ansel Hagerty was a cold, stern man, suffering from what was then called shellshock, more comfortable caring for the dead than tending to his brood of children; Genevieve was emotionally codependent on her children and addicted to morphine.

Wyatt threw himself into school in order to avoid being at home; he was a lineman on the varsity football team, on the student council, a regular participant in the school's theater troupe, and a champion debater. He graduated high school magna cum laude and second in his class. Afterward, he moved cross-country to attend Brigham Young University. At BYU, Wyatt continued playing football and participating in debate while working to obtain a Bachelor's in Sociology. He was forced to leave the football team in his sophomore year, after a debilitating knee injury left him with a permanent limp.

After a period of intense depression caused by his injury (which also sparked his lifelong painting hobby), Wyatt began to refocus his life. He claims that, at this time, God sent him a sign indicating that his future was in politics, which he'd always had more than a passing interest in anyway. Wyatt joined the College Republicans and worked as a student volunteer on several political campaigns during this time, making a small name for himself among Utah Republicans. He wrote for The Universe, BYU's student publication, and had an opinion piece--"Mormomism and the Great Society"--published in The Provo Herald in 1965. In his junior year he was elected Chairman of the BYU College Republicans, and in his senior year he was Student Body President.

After graduation from BYU (summa cum laude), Wyatt transferred back across the country, to Harvard Law School. It was the farthest from his new home he'd ever been, but he flourished among other scholarly types, enjoying both high-minded debate and boisterous "boy's nights" with his group of friends--although they were only boisterous by the standards of starched-shirt law students, one of whom is a strict Mormon--and worked for Richard Nixon's 1968 campaign. His framed photograph of himself with Nixon sits on his Senate desk to this day, as do his subsequent pictures with Reagan, both Burkes, Clifford, and Baharia.

Wyatt enjoyed his time at Harvard, but his heart yearned to return to Utah, to the mountains and deserts. When he graduated, he immediately went back to Salt Lake City and got a job clerking for an Associate Justice of the Utah Supreme Court. He worked there for four years, where he was noted for his diligence and deep legal knowledge. In 1973, he moved out of Salt Lake City, to nearby Layton in Davis County, where the rent was cheaper.

While working as a clerk, Wyatt frequented a small diner in downtown SLC. It was at the diner where he met Miranda Jeanne Frumkin (1950-1994), where he flirted with Miranda Jeanne Frumkin, and where he would eventually propose to Miranda Jeanne Frumkin. They were married in 1974, and had four sons: Braxton Abraham (1975-present), Malachi Randall (1978-present), Elisha James (1980-present), and Noah Joseph (1981-present).

In 1974, a former fellow clerk who had gone to work in the Utah Attorney General's office came to Wyatt and offered to help him find a position there, as Wyatt was seeking to move up in the world and leave his clerkship. He got a job in the office, specializing in handling child abuse and exploitation cases. He doesn't much like talking about these twelve years, except to say that it's all public record, and that he believes in the death penalty for a reason. He began his tenure at the AG office intending to become the boss one day, only to subsequently decide to depart, unable to stomach the continued flood of awfulness while also raising his own children. He came back home to Davis County, won the Republican primary for County Attorney easily, and was elected to the office in 1986.

During his tenure as County Attorney, Wyatt wasn't known very widely, due to his quiet nature, but to those who noticed he was known for being an efficient, almost dispassionate worker, not prone to courtroom antics or theatrics like many of his fellows. He showed up, did his job, and went home to his wife and kids.

Unless it was a child abuse case. Then, he would pull out every dirty trick and foul trap he could, and in one case, openly told a judge that he wanted to personally and slowly hang a defendant accused of a particularly heinous crime. This last incident gained him a fair bit of notoriety, most of it positive. However, during this time, he was sometimes criticized for, in the words of one opponent, "crafting a narrative before looking for evidence". Indeed, years or decades later, many of his cases would be revisited or appealed, and in turn reversed, because of improper practices by his office.

Still, he became more known and somewhat popular, especially with those who were "in" with the GOP. Wyatt's frequent writings for conservative publications were popular with the conservative intelligentsia, as he dissected the political and cultural events of the day through the lenses of Mormonism, sociology, and his own conservatism. He was unafraid to criticize those on his own side of the aisle, and frequently derided Ronald Reagan's anti-government stances, at one point writing: "President Reagan has taken the rhetoric of the hippies--the idea of government as The Man, trying to keep you down--and dressed it up like grown-up libertarianism. If he got his way we'd return to the Articles of Confederation". However, he also praised Reagan's actual policies and work--he just took issue with some of the President's rhetoric, and made that clear.

Regardless, he gained a measure of notoriety for his writing and legal work, and when one of Utah's Senate seats opened up in 1992, some figures within the party persuaded him to run. With his wife's blessing and a promise from his in-laws to babysit if needed, Wyatt launched his campaign, driving across the state, knocking on doors, explaining his vision for a more moral, prosperous America, and drumming constantly on his conservative principles and record. Although he started from behind, Wyatt was able to build up a solid following with his relentless retail politics, the measure of popularity he had among conservative intellectuals, and sheer luck. He won the primary in a squeaker--31.5% to 31%--and was elected to the Senate with 55% of the vote.

In the Senate, Wyatt quickly developed a reputation as a policy wonk and workhorse, often working late and coming in early to hammer out deals and legislation with fellow Republicans as well as Democrats. He had a high approval rating, and was occasionally mentioned as a possible challenger to Clifford in 1996.

And then, in February of 1994, tragedy struck. His beloved wife, Miranda Jeanne, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Senator Hagerty took a great deal of time off to care for her, get the family affairs in order, and be with his sons. Miranda Jeanne died in December of 1994, and left Wyatt devastated. He and his sons moved in with his mother-in-law, who did the lion's share of raising the younger three through their teenage years. Wyatt kept to his quiet work in the Senate.

In the Senate, he has been one of the fiercest warriors against abortion, and a general supporter of free trade. During the 106th Congress, the Majority Leader tapped him to serve as a Deputy Whip, and during Clifford's impeachment trial, he gained some additional attention for his tough questioning of witnesses, his vote to bring in live witnesses instead of video testimony, and his ultimate vote of "not proven", which was counted as a "not guilty" despite Wyatt's objections.

In the 107th Congress he served as Republican Conference Secretary, and voted for the authorization of force in Iraq, the Sudan Peace Act, and was a prominent cosponsor on the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act. Generally, he was found to vote with President Burke and the Republican position 92% of the time. In the 108th Congress he was the lead sponsor and author of the PROTECT (Prosecutorial Remedies and Other Tools to end the Exploitation of Children Today) Act, which he calls the most important legislation he's ever passed.

In 2008, he was one of the first endorsers and supporters of his old friend Jeff McDowd, although he was also supportive of his fellow Mormon Ron Mitter. The two campaigned together extensively, and Wyatt was frequently mentioned in the press as a potential running-mate, which he refuted--although he did advise McDowd to pick someone other than Paulette Smith.

After Baharia won in 2008, Hagerty became a key negotiator and contact between the Republican Senate Conference and the White House, due to his friendly relationship with Vinnie Diehl. While he was willing to work with the President and the Democrats, Wyatt still opposed them on many issues, including Bahariacare. He was the lead Republican sponsor of the Healthy Americans Act, a counterpart to Bahariacare, and opposed to cap-and-trade.

Nonetheless, a growing and loud group of conservative activists in Utah grew dissatisfied with the Senator. His apparent disdain for the Tea Party--who he referred to as "essentially good people, with good intent, but no idea of how government actually works"--as well as his votes for the Burke bank bailout, the invasion of Iraq, and his not proven vote in the Clifford impeachment served as easy attacks for the Tea Party to make. In 2010, for the first time since 1992, Wyatt faced a difficult primary.

Two Tea Party-aligned candidates ran against him. Wyatt campaigned vigorously, going back to his old strategy of door-knocking and personal connections across the Wasatch Front. While his poll numbers among the general public stayed high, and he was in a good position to win reelection, he had to clear the state convention first.

That, however, presented a problem. Ultra-conservative Tea Party activists like (not-Mike Lee) entered the race, running against Wyatt. They whipped up support from the more rabid elements of the GOP base, and the two Tea Party candidates appeared to be in a position to block Wyatt's renomination. However, Hagerty had not survived for so long in the Senate without two things: craftiness, and relationships. Wyatt introduced multiple pieces of socially-conservative legislation (school prayer, school choice, and anti-abortion), knowing they wouldn't hit the floor--these he used as campaign planks, touting his attempts, against Democratic headwinds, to "bring morality back". He began holding weekly press conferences at which he excoriated the Baharia administration for slights real and imagined in his measured, calm manner. And he reached out to three old friends--Jeff McDowd, Ron Mitter, and President John Jay Burke, each of whom endorsed him. Mitter and McDowd came out to Utah to campaign for him, and America's most famous Mormon being on his side was a clear positive for Wyatt. The final phase of this campaign was a primary debate where Wyatt was overwhelmingly targeted by his two opponents. The incumbent remained calm, however, and managed to evade obvious attacks while putting the spotlight on his opponents' inexperience, lack of a clear vision, and un-Mormonlike behaviors. He won the primary with just under 34% of the vote.

That November, Wyatt prevailed once more. He spent the last 6 years of the Baharia presidency generally opposed to the White House, including helping block the nomination of (not-Merrick Garland) in 2016. From 2012-2014, he was chairman of the RSCC, and helped mastermind the GOP takeover of the Senate in 2014. From 2014-2018 he was Republican Conference Secretary, and since 2018 he's been Chair of the Senate Republican Conference.

In 2016, he briefly speculated about a Presidential run, but ultimately decided against it. Instead, he endorsed Governor (not-Christie), calling him "a very smart, qualified guy...a leader who can push a conservative message in a blue state." He was vocally anti-Wolf at first, and only came around after Wolf was the nominee, and made it clear that he considered Wolf the lesser of two evils against Diane Clifford. Although he's been critical of Wolf since then, he's always voted in line with the Republican whip, except his intense grilling of (not-Brett Kavanaugh) and his vote to save the Affordable Care Act in 2017, which he justified by saying "It's what Jeff would've wanted", despite the furious backlash he received back home. Now, he mostly enjoys wandering the halls of power, snacking on almonds, and doing his best to mentor Everitt Colbert, who he sees as a sort of protege.

Linda's in Texas, but if she was in D.C. she would be there, with bells on, and a big fluffy punk tutu with a devil worshippers cloak on top.

NS Nation Name: Cob's Mom

Character Name: Wyatt Raphael Hagerty

Character Gender: boy

Character Age: 75 (born May 2nd, 1945)

Character Height: 6'1

Character Weight: 152 pounds

Character Position/Role/Job:
- United States Senator from Utah (since 1992)
- Davis County Attorney (1986-1992)
- Attorney with the Utah Attorney General's Investigations Dept. (1974-1986)
- Utah Supreme Court Clerk (1970-1974)

Appearance: Patrick Leahy

Character State of Origin: Salt Lake City, Utah

Character State of Residence: Layton, Utah

Character Party Affiliation: Republican

Main Strengths:
- Long record of public service; pretty popular across the board in Utah and able to attract crossover support
- Respected conservative thought leader and intellectual
- Canny political operative and dealmaker, as well as being something of a kingmaker in Utah political circles.
- Well-liked by most of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle

Main Weaknesses:
- Survived a Tea Party challenge in 2010 by the skin of his teeth; his votes for the Iraq War and the Bush bank bailout have haunted him since
- Frequently attacked by Wolfists and others as being insufficiently conservative for their tastes
- Boring, nerdy, plainspoken

Biography: Wyatt Hagerty was born in Salt Lake City to Ansel Hagerty (1900-1979) and his wife Genevieve Hagerty, nee Ashford (1915-2009).

Afterward, he went on to attend Brigham Young University. At BYU, Wyatt continued playing football and participating in debate while working to obtain a Bachelor's in Sociology. He was forced to leave the football team in his sophomore year, after a debilitating knee injury left him with a permanent limp.

After a period of intense depression caused by his injury, Wyatt began to refocus his life.

After graduation from BYU (summa cum laude), Wyatt transferred across the country, to Harvard Law School. It was the farthest from home he'd ever been, but he flourished among other scholarly types, enjoying both high-minded debate and boisterous "boy's nights" with his group of friends--although they were only boisterous by the standards of starched-shirt law students, one of whom is a strict Mormon--and worked for Richard Nixon's 1968 campaign.
