Is it then possible to be a North American state? If not, I might go for Scandinavia, France or a Middle Eastern state.

Not really more than likely it will be the opposite. The revolution in France was not just one about achieving political change but social change as well the revolution was fixed on pretty much-destroying religion and old traditions that they deemed oppressive hence why there were things like the cult of reason. In your case, there will be people dissatisfied with the government and wanting that change to rid themselves of both an old government and an old religion

North American is possible. Since other Western European nations would have been able to reach it for settlement. Scandinavia is open, eastern half of France is open, and Middle East is open.

Yes it is. Mind everything prior to 1291 is as it was historically. However, there isn't anything stopping a Latin resurgence against the Byzantines from occurring after, probably from the surviving Frankokratia states with catholic aid.

I could see it, like something along the lines of Aragon or Sicily aiding, Athens for example in reclaiming the empire.

Aye, that is possible. Just keep in mind that in this timeline Aragon was conquered by the Muslims and the Reconquista failed.

France's state religion was Catholicism. Catholicism is very rigid and institutionalized, and I'd wager Christianity is less "binding" to its adherents than Islam is. There are no institutionalized hierarchy like the Catholic Church in Islam as far as I know. A man who studied religion can become a religious leader imam/ulema. (Correct me if I'm wrong). I think there is no "central authority" except the Caliph which tradition recognizes as the Leader of the Faithful (Amir al Muminin). The social conditions are extremely different (plus, the Marinid Empire... isn't drowned in debt and riddled with mismanagement, currently :p)

  • Algerian Independence: After more than six hundred years under Marinid rule, from its origins in Morocco to the global Empire it presently is, there is a growing movement within Algeria that petitions for the independence of Algeria, breaking from the Marinid Caliphate as a sovereign state.
  • Industrialization: The Marinid Empire is on the verge of the Industrial Revolution. The Marinid government is preoccupied with the daunting task of preparing enough infrastructure to embrace fully the Industrial Revolution.
Major Foreign Issues:
  • Conquest of Indonesia: The Marinid Empire saw its far-flung and sporadic possessions in Indonesia as threatened by other European imperial powers. It should focus on uniting the Archipelago as soon as possible to prevent other Imperial powers hopping down the Indonesian islands, challenging Marinid domination over the South China Sea.
  • France: France has long been the nemesis of all Muslim states in Iberia, from the Umayyad Caliphate to the Marinid Empire. As a Catholic power, France is traditionally at odds with the largest Muslim power in Europe to their south. The Marinids has a history of supporting France's enemies; the British, the Huguenots, the Calvinists, and various German states, even including the Catholic Habsburg Empire. While no major conflict has broken out between France and the Marinids for several decades, peace is as feeble thin strand of hair. The Marinids must seek to isolate their deadly nemesis if they were to keep their dominance.

History:

    The Re-Reconquista

With the city of Algeciras secure in Nasrid hands, the two Islamic kingdoms in Iberia and Northern Africa established an even closer relationship with the goal of recovering lands lost to Castille and Aragon by the Cordoba Caliphate. Marinid Sultan Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Othman, responding to the plea for help sent by Muhammad IV of Granada, and captured Gibraltar. Abu al-Hasan himself was present in the capture, and to seal the alliance between the Marinids and the Nasrids, married the daughter of Muhammad IV - as well as arranged the marriage between major Moroccan and Granadan nobles. Abu al-Hasan invited Granadan nobles to his capital in Fez, and as a result of these arrangements, Muhammad IV was not assassinated by resentful nobles.

In Granada, Abu al-Hasan and Muhammad IV declared a firman (command), to restore the lost territories of Andalusia, and to unite all of Iberia under Islam. Shortly afterwards, this commitment was put into test when Abu al-Hassan received an appeal from the Muhammad IV to help drive back the Castilians. The assembly of a large Marinid invasion force in Morocco prompted the Castilian king Alfonso XI to bring to an end his quarrel with Afonso IV of Portugal. The Marinid fleet under the command of Muhammad ibn Ali al-Azafi destroyed the Castillian fleet, and also prevailed against the Portuguese and Genoese hired fleets, clearing the Moroccan supply line and allowed more soldiers to join the battle. The Marinids were victorious in the Battle of Rio Salado, eventually capturing Tarifa. With the Portuguese and Castillian navies suffering crippling defeat, and in land - their combined armies were defeated - the path was clear for a new Islamic conquest of Iberia.

Abu al-Hasan succeeded in uniting Morocco, Tlemcen, and Ifriqiya (Tunis) in 1347. Instead of spending his time imposing authority over Arab tribes, Abu al-Hasan assembled another army composed of auxiliaries and soldiers from Tlemcen, the Atlas Mountains, and Tunisia. This force, which landed on Tarifa two years after the conquest of Tunis, was even larger than the force he assembled in Rio Salado. The combined Marinid and Granadan (Nasrid) armies defeated a combined Portuguese-Castillian army near Seville, and managed to capture the city. Abu al-Hasan celebrated his victory in the Alcazar of Seville - the former Moorish fortress turned palace - a century after the city was taken by Castillian forces, it was returned into Moorish hands. Abu al-Hasan expelled the Catholic priests and divided Andalusia between the Arab tribes, his subjects in North Africa.

Later years would see further Marinid incursion into Castillian and Portuguese territory. Abu al-Hasan's successor Abu Inan Faris launched three campaigns against Portugal, which succeeded in capturing the Alentejo region and the city of Lisbon. The Marinids sponsored the mass migration of Arab-Berber tribes into Iberia, even going as far as inviting Egyptians and Arabs from the Levant to settle there. The population of Iberia increased significantly because of this policy.

Breakdown of army The Libertalian military is made up of fighting age men and women, paid by the government to man the forts and coasts to defend from any possible invasions. They are equipped with a hodge podge of stolen weaponry, bought from pirates that were plundered from countries around the world.

History

The golden age of piracy was a thorn in the side of Colonial England. And with the distance and defensibility of the Caribbean from the Empire, it was difficult to bring the pirates and privateers in line. So King George offered a solution. An end to the rebellion, in exchange for a pardon for all of their crimes of piracy, offered to them by the King's appointed Governor, Woodes Rogers. This offer was a spit in the face of many of the more proud and notable pirate captains. Edward "Blackbeard" Teach, backed by Charles Vane, Jack Rackham, Stede Bonnet, William Kidd, Amaro Pargo, Olivier Levasseur, and Edward Seegar, and more, all formed the first of three Pirate coalitions in defense of the Caribbean lands taken by the pirates. The coalition fought off the renowned English navy, aided greatly by their inability to resupply in the region. After driving the English out of the Caribbean in retaliation to the insulting offer of a pardon, Edward Teach lead Charles Vane and William Kidd north to the North Carolina colony. Here Blackbeard slew Lieutenant Robert Maynard and Charles Vane slew Governor Woodes Rogers. Their heads were severed and flown by the flags of their respective ships as the crews returned to Nassau victorious.

With this battle won, this coalition of pirates came together to formalize their pirate code in order to form a new nation. Divided as they naturally were, they knew the value of standing together now, having driven the English back as they did. With the code formed and agreed upon, the first elections of Libertalia were held in 1724. Shockingly, Stede Bonnet was named the first ever Councilor of Libertalia. And he was re-elected thrice before his death in 1740. During this time Councilor Bonnet oversaw the formation of the Second Coalition, to defend against an invasion attempt by England. It was successful, but cost Libertalia great losses. Including the lives of Edward Teach and Charles Vane. It ended with a shaky ceasefire agreed upon by Libertalia and England, who to this day do not recognize Libertalia as a formal nation.

The third pirate coalition, formed in 1765, under the leadership of controversial Councilor Carter Tuster, was the first and to date only offensive coalition in Libertalia's short history. Tuster, A merchant Councilor, wanted to challenge for control of the southern tip of Florida. He believed that control of this area was paramount to defense of the nation as it could be an opportune staging point for an attack. This coalition ended in fantastical failure, losing nearly thirty ships and twenty pirate crews in the process. Tuster did not get elected to a second term in 1770 as Calibassas Teach, the grandson of Blackbeard, has been the Councilor of Libertalia since then.

Breakdown of army
Instead of the traditional 800-900 man regimental system of many nations, The Confederation Army decided to adopt a 2,700 man strong brigade, combining elements of artillery, infantry, and cavalry to support each other. Mixed in these units can be found specialist units of grenadiers, light infantry, and native skirmishers. Natives have a valued spot among the military, as they are expert navigators and hunters, being relied upon for excursions or ambushes. Militia units contain a large portion of natives and regular colonists but are usually equipped with little more than hunting rifles or weapons were taken from the enemy. While there is a conscription system in storage for emergencies, the army is mostly volunteer-based, with soldiers enjoying a fairly high pay.
Breakdown of navy
As its position entitles it to an abundant supply of live oak and white oak, the government has utilized this to pour a fair amount of money into the navy, as pirating was a large problem, along with the Colonial naval garrisons of the two Colonial superpowers. It was also decided that in event of a war, a grant would be issued to pay for Privateer vessels, to interdict supplies while the actual Navy engaged warships.

History (where you put the history/alt-history of your nation) In the year 1680, a group of relatively wealthy Dutch people began an effort to Colonize a nice spot along the then-unnamed Gulf, near modern Day Mobile. After gathering a large contingent of people from the underclasses and some demobilized soldiers, they packed themselves onto a small fleet of ships and set off to the Deep south. Settling the land, they discovered the Chato people, and after some skirmishes with them, tried to barter with them, offering firearms and medical supplies in return for a non-aggression pact and them teaching the colonists the ways of the land and some of the different tribes. Over time, ships that left for Europe to bring back supplies returned with more colonists, more guns, and an increased presence. After small diplomatic overtures to the Chato and its allies, the Choctaw and Chickasaw, they agreed to a treaty which would result in the 3 native tribes doing diplomatic communications through the Mobile Colonists, alongside them all contributing to defense, with the Colonists trying to westernize some elements of the native Americans, though refrained from aggressive religious conversion, as that had been proven to lead to violence.

In 1740, the Port of Mobile was expanded, opening new shipyards, and the rapidly expanding Colony used this to establish multiple Seaside cities along the Florida and Alabamian coastline. European colonists began to trickle out deeper into the land, and integration with the Natives began, as 4 Semi-Sovereign states were established under a Central government, with the Natives getting a fair amount of representation in small state Assemblies, with legally required minority seats reserved for them. Over time, as the cities grew, the population expanded, so did it's needs. It looked north towards uncolonized land, sending overtures to the tribes to join them. They refused, and so the 4 Assemblies met, and agreed to move a cobbled-together force of militias to take the land. Not wanting to subscribe to the total war aspect of some anti-native campaigns. To not anger the natives already under their banner, they refrained from burning down entire villages. Instead, they opted for a hearts and minds campaign which improved the quality of life for some villages, decreasing resistance, and allowing militia units to slowly trickle back home, before being replaced by more local units.

1760, 11 years after the end of the northern Campaign, and the Confederation was still largely decentralized. Massive moves forward were reached when a majority of the State's armies were absorbed into a Federal military, which began to standardize weaponry and outfitting, alongside Naval Militias, which were supplemented by new ships coming from Mobile and other port towns. During construction of the fleet, they discovered the value of layering White oak and live oak together, and how resistant it was to canon shot, and began basing their fleet around this central concept, of fast but powerful vessels capable of defeating other ships of its type, but being able to outrun larger and more heavily armored ships. Following the establishment of a centralized Army and Navy, construction of 6 Border forts, 3 on the British side, and 3 on the Spanish/Iberian side began, to provide some warning and protection against what some assumed to be an attack that would come at some point.

Now the year is 1785, and a new expedition to the north is in it's planning stages. The Armies under the new Lord Protector of the Independent Confederation of Grevelona prepare to march if needed, seeking to further establish their place in the history books, as a nation not under the yoke of monarchies in Europe, but of free men in the New World.

Breakdown of army
Instead of the traditional 800-900 man regimental system of many nations, The Confederation Army decided to adopt a 2,700 man strong brigade, combining elements of artillery, infantry, and cavalry to support each other. Mixed in these units can be found specialist units of grenadiers, light infantry, and native skirmishers. Natives have a valued spot among the military, as they are expert navigators and hunters, being relied upon for excursions or ambushes. Militia units contain a large portion of natives and regular colonists but are usually equipped with little more than hunting rifles or weapons were taken from the enemy. While there is a conscription system in storage for emergencies, the army is mostly volunteer-based, with soldiers enjoying a fairly high pay.
Breakdown of navy
As its position entitles it to an abundant supply of live oak and white oak, the government has utilized this to pour a fair amount of money into the navy, as pirating was a large problem, along with the Colonial naval garrisons of the two Colonial superpowers. It was also decided that in event of a war, a grant would be issued to pay for Privateer vessels, to interdict supplies while the actual Navy engaged warships.

Breakdown of the army: The Friesland-Sachsen Military is made out of 75 "Garnisonen" one of these contains up to 1000 Soldiers, there are 47 normal Line-Infantry "Garnisonen", 8 "Garnisonen" are Hunting Regiments which fight in Forested Areas, these use Wheel Lock Rifles. 19 of the remaining 20 "Garnisonen" are Cavalry Regiments of any kind, with the last regiment being a Royal Dragoner Regiment which seeks to protect the King and his family. Only the best men enter into the royal Dragoner Regiment which makes it an honor to serve in them, when you retire at the age of 55 from the Royal Dragoons you get a plot of Land and a Special Title. The Numbers of the Army can only be maintained by conscription with every able-bodied Male between the age of 17-20 having to serve for 5 years when he serves his Duty he will be put in Reserve for 20 years. But how can the country deploy the reserve so fast? Well, it's simple, the entire country is slightly divided by "Deployment Sectors" which have to ready their reserve based on the Number they are given. For example; Sector 1 is the readiest to deploy troops while Sector 17 is the least, this gives more time to the more civilian Sectors to deploy.

Major Domestic Issues

Split in Half
Due to the Inheritance of Friesland and the Conquering of the Coast, the State is split in half. Not only Geographically but also Culturally, this brings an array of Problems to the Nation. Because of that, the North is much more decentralized from the rest of the Nation and enjoys more autonomy than the rest of the Nation.

Foresty Feeling
Even though the Nation is mostly Developed there are still huge Areas covered in Forest and other Woods. This makes the Modernization of the Communities residing in them, hard and costly. While the rest of the Nations Markets expand and produce and buy more goods, the Woodlandtowns don´t have such a lucky Situation and remain to be some of the poorer Communities in their respected Regions.

Small Town World
While there are some big Cities most of the Human Settlements are in small towns, these have to be developed and connected to the already small plastered-road system. This will drain the Money out of the Governments' Pockets in the short term making them somewhat bankrupt for a moment or be thrown into a small recession.

Colonization for Saxons
While the rest of The World started to colonize the Saxons haven't done a lot of these things and merely Colonized South Georgia and the Falklands. The Saxons now want to colonize more Areas of the World.

Coffeeroute Steps
Due to the Popularity of Coffee in the Nation, and because of their small colonies which arent in the Bean Belt, Friesland-Saxony is entirely reliant on other Nations to supply it with Coffee. This means that Saxony needs to establish strong Trade Routes with "Bean-Belt Nations".

History:
Oversimplified History
Even though the History of Saxony didn´t change until 1482, in that year the brothers Ernst and Albert didn´t have friction which didn't cut the nation in half. This led to the confidence of the Saxons, while this was one of the reasons why the Treaty of Eger/Cheb wasn´t signed. The Treaty of Cheb wanted to strengthen the border between the Saxons and the Czechs. In the Year 1485, a War broke out between Saxony and Bohemia which firstly went bad for the Saxons. Due to the defeat of the Bohemians at the Battle of Chemnitz, the War turned Tables, since most of the Bohemian Military participated in these miscalculated attacks. Meanwhile, on the Elbe, the Bohemian Navy sieged Pirna´s Ports which didn´t accomplish a lot, but it was an inconvenience to the supply lines. With the now mostly beaten Bohemian Military on the run, the Saxons could lay a siege for 2 years to Prague. When in 1490 the War ended, the Treaty of Altenberg happened which saw the Bohemians giving the States of Eger and Erzgebirge to the Saxons and recognize these to be the definitive Southern Borders of the Saxo-Bohemian Border. Even though the question about the Lausitz remained but the Confrontation of the Problem was just delayed time after time.

In 1524 the Saxon King, who was Gerhard the Smooth at the time inherited the small Kingdom of Friesland which now gave the chance to trade with foreign powers with an only minimal toll. This had greatly benefited the economy and the Saxons got [Somewhat-] Rich because of it, but it wasn't enough Land with a Water Border. So they declared war on the Alliance between Ostfriesland and Oldenburg. These two States were pretty weak against the Saxon Forces but had put up a good fight, these Territories were annexed in the Treaty of Wilhelmshaven. After a pretty long time of Peace lasting between 1533-99, the Nation of Friesland-Saxony was attacked by Bohemia because of their old dispute with Saxony. For first they wanted to get their lost territory in the Erzgebirge back, second, they wanted to strengthen their claim to the Lausitz, and third, they wanted to get more money from Friesland-Saxony. The Bohemian Army pushed all the way to Dresden and even laid siege to it but with help from their allies, the Brandenburgisch encircled the Sieging Party and has put itself in a better situation. The Progression of the War was slow and costly in both Money, Manpower, and Equipment, but it was successfully done. In the end, the Lausitz was given to Friesland-Saxony establishing a Strong eastern Border.

At the start of the second decade of the century, the Nation of Friesland-Saxony bought the Free Hanseatic Cities of Hamburg and Lübeck. This made the country broke for approximately 5 years, but the country recovered pretty well under the management of Peter the 1st. Due to the Death of Gerhard the 4th of Saxony-Lauenburg in 1616, the territory of his country passed to Friesland-Saxony, it was inevitably integrated in 1617. At the start of the 30 Years, War Friesland-Saxony remained neutral but dropped that title when the Duchy of Mecklenburg, which was Catholic at the time insulted the nation. Due to quick and decisive battles in key locations and a Naval blockade of their Main Citys Ports, the Friesland Saxon Military had won. After the annexation of the territory, the Army hadn´t fought in a lot of battles and mostly stayed in home territory. This was maybe the reason why Bohemia didn´t invade the country. In the 1660s the country had fought an Alliance between Ostfriesland, Bremen, and Oldenburg, the Saxons may be only won because they didn't participate majorly in the fighting of the 30 Years War. With most of its wanted territory in its Kingdom, the Frisian-Saxons eyed upon Schleswig and Holstein which remained mostly neutral, but there was also the question of colonies which was answered by colonizing the newly discovered Falklands in the 1690s.

At the start of the century in the year 1706, the Great fire of Reichenau [Lausitz] happened which saw 956 Civilians and 44 Firefighters killed. This has seen protests to create a Volunteer Firefighter Brigade for every City, Town, and Village. Even though the Accomplishments of the protests were only seen after the year 1769, in the meantime a lot of things happened. The explorer Daniel Gerk had accidentally discovered South George and the South Sandwich Islands in the Year 1712, while they were quickly colonized the only settlement is a Shipyard and Naval Outpost which holds a maximum of 100 men which are being changed every 3 years. While the Navy and Military saw a slight rise in their funding, this time the military increased a lot when the Conscription Laws started. With their now new-found confidence, the Nation of Friesland-Saxony attacked Schleswig and Holstein in the Year 1739 and had beaten them in the Year 1742, of course, their territory was annexed by the country. After 38 Years the City of Reichenau [Lausitz] was rebuilt again, bigger and better. When the first plans to colonize the Mascarenes were published in the year 1756, a lot of people wanted to help the colonization but new Colonization Laws were prohibiting more than 1000 members to create the first settlements on small Islands. Also, the Nation has passed new laws in the year 1765 that forced sailors to decontaminate ships from rats and other pests, the native wildlife was also protected by a law that prohibited the hunting and consumption of the native wildlife. It has been planned and agreed that the Island of Guadeloupe is to be bought and/or inhabited in the year, in 1777 the money for the project was laid aside.

The Sailors know that this Landmass may not be huge, but the and is Land and will be colonized for the Crown and it may even be a Military Outpost. They already left the SKM at the Island "Sankt Jakobus" [Réunion] which they found 5 days ago. The colony on that Island should be built right now, but now they only see another to-be-colonized Island and the giant ocean. "Hey Captain, I see a Reef around the Island. I think that the only possibility to get to that Island is by Rowboat." a sailor said. "Then it shall be this way. Now go and prepare the Boat.", the Sailor nicked and left. What now unfolded was a normal scene when departing the boat, some sailors loaded the boat with the Flag to be placed, Ammunition and Guns. They expected it to have some kind of inhabitants so they loaded some gifts as well. Now that the Boat was loaded, a party of 7 Sailors climbed into the Rowboat and was lowered by a Party of 8 Men. Soon the Party started to row to the Island, "Harrald, did you put the Guns in a Safe and not wet place?" said the first sailor, "They are in the Metalbox under you." said the man with the name Harrald, "Good, I thought that you put them in the back, you know that that box back there can fall anytime into the water." said the First sailor again.

When they arrived on the Island they saw nobody, no Human Soul around, it was an eery feeling but nothing special, so a sailor who was apparently the Leader of the Group started to speak "We the Navy of Friesland-Saxony have discovered the new Landmass which will now be called Muritus! and now we shall-", but before he could even finish his sentence a bird has interrupted him. The Sailors were surprised, maybe even spooked, the bird was... a Chicken and an Eagle combined? It was a surprising thing to see but that "Thing" needed a name so they agreed to name the strange bird "Dronte"[Dodo] by dropping name suggestions into a hat and picking a paper-piece. "So, we need to put an Expedition here first before we send the colonists but we first need to put the Flag up." The Leader said, as they pounded the Flag into the Ground another one of these Dronte appeared out of the Tall Grass, "Let's leave I don't like the look of these things. The Flag is in the Ground and there is nothing left to do, so please let us go." a Sailor nagged, but he was just slapped by another. "We should in actuality bring one of these birds back to the Ship, I think, the other colleagues will find them interesting too." one of them said, with a good idea in hand, they picked up 2 Drontes[Dodo] and started to paddle back to the ship.

On the ship was a jolly situation, but then the scouting Party arrived and brought an ugly bird with them. While there wasn´t a panic, nobody wanted to touch that thing except the Scouting Party Members. "What the hell is that thing?" an officer said, "What did you name it?", "It is a Dronte[Dodo], Well the Name that is. A very interesting bird I might say, it was found on the island we now call Muritus." said the Leader of the Scouting Party. While the rest of the crewmembers of the Ship started to look at and inspect the Dronte[Dodo] an interesting sound was heard from it, maybe the first time anyone heard the sounds of a Dodo. It was a chilling sound, no the sound was a more silly one? Even though the Crew was surprised, the Crew didn´t start a panic, which wouldn´t be logical to panic about a new bird, and start to throw the Birds overboard but instead opted to choose to take them back to the Island, a surprising thing at that time, but due to the new colonization laws, it was common in Friesland-Saxony. "So, you will now take them back to the Island and set them free." the Captain said, "Yes my Sir, they will be back in only a matter of hours." the Leader of the Scouting Group said. With the birds now gone the Crew organized again to sail to the rumored Island of Kafee[Rodrigues] and claim it for the crown.
