Welcome!

aka is set in a world much like our own, save for the existence of people with extraordinary abilities. Metahumans, as they have come to be called, derive their powers from multiple different sources and origins, but ultimately what matters is where they place themselves in the battle between heroes and villains.

Since the mid-1980s, metahumans have gone through a series of trials and training to become 'Sanctioned', allowing them to legally do battle against the forces of villainy. The global organization Argus monitors and tracks all hero activity, acting as both a support network and policing agency. Unfortunately, you seem to have found yourself outside of Argus' reach, as far as you can tell.

The world of aka is still full of mysteries- the origin of powers is unknown, and mysterious events that even the most hyper-intelligent metahumans can't rationally explain crop up from time to time.

Your character likely had a past in this world of heroes and villains, but they've woken up to find themselves away from all of it. You've found yourself in a cabin, surrounded by a thick pine forest and an always-present fog. You remember your life outside, but you have no recollection of being brought here. It's probably in your interest to figure out where you are and what's going on, then to make your escape. But the woods are dense, and you don't think you're alone...

This RP is something different from the usual superhero RP, taking inspiration from books like Maze Runner (Co-OP's idea, not mine, I haven't read it). The setting should give you some decent freedom in creating your character while also allowing us to keep the players together enough that character interaction isn't sparse. Character Creation will be explained in greater detail further down in this post.

Our setting is a cabin in a forest clearing, surrounded on all sides by a thick pine forest. The forest seems to always be shrouded in fog, but the daring may be able to explore further out. Danger and mystery abound.

There will be a light mechanics system- don't worry about keeping track of numbers, the OPs will take care of that, but the idea is that it'll help make it easier to define what your character is good at in a given scenario. Those of you familiar with TTRPGs should find it fairly intuitive, and for those who aren't, more will be explained once characters are created and the IC gets going. This should hopefully make freeform superpower text-based RP a little more structured and fair to all types of characters.

Rules
  1. The words of the OPs (Okayanos, Cyberiad, Skyggeheim) is final in any arguments.
  2. Disrespect or otherwise being unnecessarily mean to other players will result in you being banned.
  3. A small number of superpowers are banned, see the character creation section.
  4. Don't godmod or egregiously metagame.
  5. Don't post WIP applications- any finished app will be looked at and commented on.
  6. Try to enjoy yourself, and work with other players to craft your posts.

Character creation

Rules on Powers: A small number of powers are banned. The first is Time Manipulation abilities. If your character can stop time, there is literally nothing any other non-time manipulating character can do to stop you from acting however you wish. So, characters are not permitted to stop time, freeze time, slow time, accelerate time, or time travel either forward, backwards, or sideways (timeline hopping).

Second is super speed greater than 100 mph. Speedsters present much of the same complications that time manipulators can cause, namely the ability to kill other player characters before they have a chance to defend themselves sans metagaming or godmodding.

Third is long-term precognition. This is only partially due to 'cogs ability to metagame with an IC excuse, but they can ruin plot twists (if the op allows them to by telling them what is going to happen) and/or they can state things and say 'well, my char has precog'. Short-term 'Combat Precogs' can be included with sufficient downsides to their powers.

Fourth is direct mind control and similar abilities that take control away from other players (note this is basically the general theme for the other banned powers; they take away other player's freedom or lessen it).

All of these bans assume a power without any real, crippling downsides. There remains potential for any of these to be allowed if the weaknesses of the ability balance out its flaws, but expect me to be a hard-ass regarding this.
  • Time Manipulation
  • Super speed > 100 mph
  • Precognition
  • Mind control
  • Powers that remove player control in general

Weaknesses, Drawbacks, and Limitations: Balance is very important to ensure things are as fair as possible, and on that notion I want to talk about balancing your character. Just so we're using like-terms I want to define 'weakness' as something that your character has, either physical or mental, that could be exploited by another character to lower their effectiveness in combat. This means that 'being human' is not a weakness, so don't try to pull that as justification for having op powers. Your character does not necessarily have to have a weakness, but if that is the route you choose to go in an attempt to balance your character, there are some things to consider. Firstly, having something like a 'kryptonite' is not really a solid weakness. If it's a really rare and obscure substance then how or why would other character's have it? And if it's really common, how can you be effective at all? To top this off as a bad weakness, if it is a true analog to Superman's kryptonite, it would make your character basically useless if it is present. Try to have a weakness that is common enough to keep you from super saiyan, but that doesn't make you useless when exploited.

Drawbacks are another way to balance your character that instead of relying on external factors, focuses on ramifications of character powers. Possible drawbacks could include, but are not limited to, needing large caloric intakes or ways that using powers harm your character, like having flame powers that can still burn the user.

Limitations are hopefully self explanatory, but in short, they are limits that you put on powers that could otherwise be overpowered. Some limits could be something like being able to fly, but only be able to fly carrying less than 50 lbs of extra weight. Keep these things in mind when making your character to increase the likelihood of your character being accepted.

Species: Aliens or alien hybrids are not allowed in this setting.

Magic: 'Magic' as it is classically defined is non-existent in this setting. Some metahumans dress as Sorcerers and present their abilities as magic, but that's purely a fashion statement.

Tech: The tech level for this RP is roughly modern-tech. So if it isn't in current use it is not available to your character(that means experimental tech and prototype tech and theoretical tech is not allowed). The exception to this is having your character specialize in making advanced technology- this will count as an ability for your character, granting them access to said advanced technology.

Cabin Dweller

Name: Joseph Decker
Alias: Arsenal
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Image

Powers:
  • Mechanokinesis- Arsenal is capable of manipulating and controlling electric and mechanical devices. This control allows him to telekinetically move, disassemble and reassemble them at rapid speed. This power extends from simpler devices such as basic firearms to more complex devices such as automobiles.
  • Builder Mind- While he lacks superhuman intelligence, Arsenal's powers grant an intuitive understanding of machines and parts, letting him envision and create novel devices from different parts even if the parts wouldn't normally be suitable for building the desired creation.
  • Biocharge- Arsenal can generate a decent bio-electric charge that can be used to power devices in his sphere of influence.

Drawbacks & Limitations:
  • Arsenal cannot glean information from electronic devices such as computers or phones; he can merely control their hardware
  • Arsenal's telekinetic effect mainly applies to metals, and is far weaker on other materials such as wood or plastic and would have no effect on non-metallic items not in close proximity to metal of similar mass.
  • His biocharge cannot be used offensively in of itself and can only power items he can control within about 15 feet, that range also limiting the size of what he can build and affect.

Weaknesses: Arsenal's right arm is a robotic prosthetic controlled by his powers, a lack of which render it inert.

Equipment and weapons:
- His robotic arm, which packs a punch, but also can serves a Swiss army knife's worth of functions due to his powers. Broadly, it can be a hand/fist, a shield, an energy rifle, or a utility tool platform. Lml
  • Hand mode: Since the arm is mainly metal, it makes for a great melee weapon and has a superhuman grip.
  • Shield: by rearranging the metal components of his arm, Arsenal can create a simple riot-shield inspired barrier that is big enough to protect either himself or some other human-sized target from light-medium firearms.
  • Energy Rifle: fueled by his biocharge, the rifle arrangement doesn't require ammunition, and can offer a decent offensive option with a slower fire rate than most guns.
  • Tool: Arsenal can manipulate his robotic hand into any sort of mechanical or power tool such as screwdrivers, wrenches, saws, drills, etc.

BACKGROUND

Nationality: America
Hometown: Titan, Co

Personality: Possibly a result of his powers, Joseph is rather analytical and contemplative; laid back in most things. He tends to be level headed and slow to panic, desiring things to be in order and willing to work to make them that way.

Bio: When Joseph was a child, his hometown made headlines when numerous children spontaneously manifested metahuman abilities. Seeking answers and worried their may be some environmental hazard that spurred on the "outbreak", the U.S. government contacted with the notorious biotech company, Gencore, to investigate.

Realizing the brutal an inhumane experimentation Gencore was carrying out on his peers and Neighbors, Joseph helped gather some of his fellow metahuman teens and children and made an escape attempt. In the process, as he was forcing open an industrial metal door, Joseph as shot, breaking his concentration and causing the door to slam shut, severing hsi right arm. Fortunately, his powers subconsciously reacted, forging a predecessor to his current arm.

His sacrifice allowed his group to exit the Gencore facility that'd been erected to study the town's younger population, catching the attention of some heroes and Argus, who quickly stepped in and put the Gencore operation on Ice.

Joseph, now calling himself Arsenal, went on to do some mild hero work, mostly content to work at Argus' Swiss Headquarters, helping to build tech for other heroes.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Fears/Phobias: Hates overly- sterilized and hospital-like environments after his ordeal and lengthy hospital stay after his injury.
Skills: Very mechanically inclined, and trained in basic martial arts as part of the process of him becoming sanctioned.

Cabin Dweller

Name: Richard Reyne
Alias: Knight Owl
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Image

Powers:
Genius-Level Intellect
Whilst growing up in the world of corporations and the highest class of society, certain requirements were expected of young Richard. Being the brightest and smartest of all the other families was certainly number one on that list. Attending the best schools, learning from the best tutors and an entire arsenal of the world's greatest educational learning tools granted him many benefits that excelled his IQ to 176. Because of this, Richard has provided himself with the best tools and equipment for his new role as a Guardian of Justice, including dabbling in advanced technologies that have put him and his company at the forefront of the Cyber Security and Military Technology industries.

Enhanced Learning Ability
Richard picks up and masters new talents supernaturally quick- it only takes a few lessons for him to master something, and only a few more to make him world-class. Additionally, his acquired skills fade much slower than a normal person’s would.

Elite Combat Training
Utilizing his connections in the military sector, Richard has had the opportunity to train with elite military operators from the U.S. Army Rangers, the U.S. Navy SEALS, the British Special Air Service, and the Russian Spetznaz. He has received top hand-to-hand and advanced firearm proficiency training.

Martial Arts
To compliment his combat training, Richard has become proficient in Krav Maga, Aikido, Ninjitsu, and Wing Chun.

Drawbacks & Limitations:
Despite the peak-human conditioning, military training, the martial arts, and intelligence and all the money he could ever need, he is only human, and like any human, he can die much easier than the rest.

Weaknesses:
As Knight Owl is human, he is susceptible to injury just like any normal human being. Broken bones, deep gashes, bullet wounds, all being examples for just what Richard has received.

Equipment and weapons:
In Suit:
JumpJets: Equipped inside his boots are tiny microthrusters that give Knight Owl the ability to jump between 130 feet, and can glide for miles using the expandable wings built under his arms. The JumpJets can also be used to accelerate Knight Owl as he glides, giving him the ability to fly, but the Jets last a maximum of thirty seconds in flight before they enter a venting stage that takes a minute or more depending on the energy output. At maximum propulsion, Knight Owl can fly up to 150 miles per hour.
Owlwings: The wings are attached to the underneath of his arms and can be deployed at the push of a button, and are made of the same materials as his suit.
Staff: Knight Owl wields a staff made from solidified and weighted Graphene. At both ends of it are 12 gauge shotguns barrels that can fire three rounds each of Buckshot.
Wrist-mounted Projectile launchers: On both of Knight Owl's wrists are launchers that fire high explosive, tear gas, EMP, smoke, and electrified grenades. It can also fire stun-darts to pacify enemies.
Heads-Up Display: On the inside of his helmet, Knight Owl has access to suit integrity, ammunition counters, night-vision, thermal imaging, radar, distance indicator, and cyber-warfare suite. The helmet has a built in virtual intelligence, named Ollie that assists Richard in decisions and other information.
Grappling gun: To assist with accidental falls or for use without the use of his thrusters, Knight Owl can use a grappling gun capable of reaching 100 yards and can pull in any direction 80 mph.
Cape: His cape was not made purposely for the fact that all the superheroes in comics used them. It is attached to be used as a bullet-proof curtain. It can be used to shield Knight Owl from bullets and can be used for camouflage in dark environments.
Talons: The three spikes adorning each arm are used for deadly hand-to-hand combat. Made from Obsidian-infused tungsten carbide, giving it a more than razor sharp edge as well as the strength and durability of tungsten carbide.

Outside of Suit:
Glock 23: Richard's go-to deadly weapon. This .40 caliber weapon holds 13+1 held in an inside-the-belt kydex holster in appendix carry. He carries a spare magazine in a separate mag carrier on the right side of his hip.
Collapsible Staff: Made from the same materials as his regular staff, this staff is built using separate cylinders built atop each other that collapse and extend onto one another. Though three inches shorter than this regular staff and doesn't come equipped with the slug launchers, being hit with it can be deadly.
Pocketknife: A 3 1/2" Gerber brand tactical folding knife, partially serrated
Watch-mounted Projectile launcher: Utilizing the frame of a 5.11 Sentinel Watch, the launcher can fire a a stun and high explosive dart from the adjustment dial.
Cellphone: Richard operates the newest model Samsung Galaxy, connected to the Owl's Nest Mainframe. Operating off of secured Salus servers and towers, Richard is typically guaranteed to have good service in any location across the United States and abroad. Typically.

BACKGROUND

Nationality: American
Hometown: Seattle

Personality:
To outsiders, Richard can be misconstrued as outwardly hostile or unfriendly at the least. To those he doesn't know, he speaks few words and would prefer to avoid them. To the few friends he has, he's extremely loyal and warming to them. He treats them like family and will do whatever he can to help them in their endeavors. Behind closed doors, he's funny and sarcastic at times.

Bio:
Richard Anthony Reyne was born August 14, 1980 to Walter and Mary Reyne. The son of ambitious businesspeople, Richard was raised around his father's corporation, running through the halls of Salus Corporation's Seattle headquarters while his father worked. His mother worked for the same corporation as the Chief Financial Officer as well as promoting foreign contracts across the world. By the time he was 14 years old, he had learned the ins and outs of the corporation, accompanying his mother to many business trips to China, Germany, France, Brazil, and India. Weeks before his 15th birthday, he accompanied his mother on a trip to Nigeria. During this trip, he and the convoy of his mother and ten other Salus associates were intercepted en route to the Nigerian capital by Boko Haram, an Islamic extremist group. Using armored trucks and machine guns, they rounded up each American and executed them, saving Richard and his mother for last.

They would be transported to an isolated encampment nearby and subjected to evil tortures in the name of Islam. Throughout the night, the screams of his mother could be heard as a young Richard cowered in a small hut, occasionally facing severe beatings from the commander of the cell. The punishments lasted for days, giving the two just enough food and water to stay alive. The wounds that Richard's mother couldn't be fixed with first aid and she would succumb to them on the third day. In the morning of the fourth day, the Nigerian Army found the location of the encampment and within a matter of hours, Nigerian soldiers descended on the camp. The firefight lasted only minutes but felt like hours for the exhausted and scarred Richard. Richard returned a different man. With his wife gone and their son scarred, Walter Reyne drowned himself in whiskey, leaving Richard alone for days at a time. Without his father, Richard accepted that their family was forever gone. He struggled through High School, dabbling in drugs, alcohol and self-harm. At the age of 16, Richard failed a suicide attempt by overdose, saved by the Mansion's caretaker and rushed to the hospital with only minutes left to spare. When Richard turned 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps, but was discharged after multiple behavioral problems and striking another recruit. After returning home, he began taking self defense classes, bought a handgun and took handgun classes. He began going to the gym, growing stronger. As his father's health deteriorated, Richard took a larger role in the corporation, pledging that he would turn his life around for the sake of his mother, who would have wanted better. His relationship with his father would very slowly repair itself. Despite his life looking up, he carried with him a deep resentment and hatred, specifically for those that took his mother from him. He became proficient in Krav Maga and trained hard. He enrolled in Gonzaga University, majoring in Criminology with a minor in Business Administration. After a turbulent four years, he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree. At the age of 23, his father died of a heart attack. With his relationship with his father somewhat repaired, the loss of a second parent wouldn't devastate him like the first. He resolved to diving into Salus Corporation and while it was ran efficiently with a Board of Directors, he would be brought in as a voice of approval for the Board. As Salus was heavily invested in cutting edge technology with several contracts with militaries around the world, access to prototypes and other equipment was easy. For months, he experimented and built his own suit, donning the alternate name "Knight Owl".

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Fears/Phobias:
Through his most turbulent years, Richard had become fearful of nightmares, which had become frequent in his latest years. Many of them depicted reliving the horrors of Nigeria, hauntings of his mother and father coming back to him, blaming him for their deaths.
Skills: Richard is fluent in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and German.

Very interesting concept! It's not often you see the superhero genre mixed with elements of supernatural horror like this (usually it's the aesthetic that's drawn upon instead of the atmosphere, which is what horror is all about). I'm interested in seeing about throwing up an app in the following days, but I do have a few questions. Are there any limitations with powers that I should be aware of? I've read through the banned powers section, but given this is - at least in part - a horror piece and there is a sense of helplessness involved, I'm wondering if there's other powers that wouldn't be welcomed, such as light generation, teleportation and the like.

Also, is there any major change to the world beyond the appearance of superhumans and the creation of Argus? I checked out most of the lore thread, but I don't know which aspects might be outdated and which aren't, so yeah.

On an unrelated note, what's the level of activity you're expecting for this RP?

Putting this here in case I want to make an app later.

But I must say, kickass concept! Paranormal horror with superhero characters? Sounds awesome, like the New Mutants movie. Will definitely consider this RP.

Nice to see Richard back again. Do note, however, that his effectiveness will be pretty limited without the ability to restock on his equipment, and any tech breaking down could spell disaster for him. I would encourage you to at least consider picking up a low level power- if not, he’s fine, just probably lower on the power scale than he’d normally be.

Zarkenis Ultima wrote:Many good questions

First off, thank you for your interest! There aren’t any hard-banned powers aside from what’s in the OP, but extremely long-ranged teleportation could potentially cause issues. It’d really have to come down to the specifics of the application.

Superpowers and ARGUS are the biggest flashpoint events in the world’s history. The only other major changes would be historical in nature- the Metahuman Rights Movement in the 70s, devastating villain attacks in St. Petersburg, Chicago, Portland, and some other cities, and the past existence of CADMUS.

I’m expecting a decent amount of activity, enough to ensure the story moves forward. Ideally there’d be as much focus on inter-character drama and conflicts as there is on the attempts to escape the misty woods.

Understood, thanks for the answers! I'll take them into consideration. One last question, does the character have to be sanctioned by Argus? Not planning on making a villain or anything here, I'm just wondering in case I opt to go with a more civilian type character.

That's perfectly fine! The sanctioning process is for professional heroes- your character could be some sort of vigilante, or just a metahuman civilian.

Magnetokinesis: Alfred possesses the ability to generate and control powerful magnetic fields. He is able to sense and manipulate metal within twenty feet with extremely high precision, giving him the rather exaggerated but fearful reputation of almost never missing a killing blow. Alfred is also capable of amplifying his magnetic fields to disrupt electronics within a dozen meters; the range of disruption increases to a hundred meters if he is subjected to intense physical pain, and anything metallic in the immediate vicinity tend to get violently thrashed around as well.

Drawbacks & Limitations: In order for his powers to be useful, he needs to have metallic objects nearby. Take those away and he is just any other bloke.

Weaknesses: He does not possess superhuman durability and is thus susceptible to injury. Non-metallic weapons would be his ultimate hurdle in a fight.
Equipment and weapons:
Katana: Alfred wields what onlookers have described to be a 15th century samurai sword that appears to be in pristine condition.

Daggers: Alfred always carries a dozen daggers inside his coat, which he uses in tandem with his magnetic abilities when in a fight.

Steel Ringed Boots and Bracelets: These two seemingly harmless accessories allow Magnekai to levitate using his magnetokinesis, though he does not have the skill for high speed flight.

BACKGROUND

Nationality: American
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia

Personality: Most of those that know him see him as a kindly soul that would not dare hurt a fly. For all its worth, that is what he is most of the time; loyal, reliable, and rather scornful at times. He'll sacrifice anything to see friends and family safe; and for that matter, he will do anything, even if it destroys his soul. Dismemberment and beheading are just a few things off the list that he has been willing to do, and has done, in the last two years in a bid to keep those he cares about safe. For Alfred, there are no second chances for murderers and madmen; a swift death is what they deserve. For it is their damnable existence that has poisoned the Earth, and only the ultimate solution will suffice for their Ilk.

Bio: Alfred was an ordinary child born to totally ordinary parents that lived in an ordinary apartment in Atlanta… until he wasn't. He was the youngest of three children, and while his siblings did not manifest any abilities, he did when he was 15. Alfred's only friend was a skinny kid in his teenage years, and was regarded by the less than kind people in his school to be an easy target for bullying. Formerly a star student with excellent academics, he would soon be tormented by a gang of bullies; something that Alfred quickly took notice of when he spotted them throwing a case of grape juice over his friend's head in the comfort room. He was, they said, a freak, a mutie.

At this, Alfred loses his cool, and unleashed a magnetic anomaly due to the outburst of anger that erupted out of his inner being, disrupting the power grid in the school. In a fit of animalistic rage, he began to choke the three that had been tormenting his only friend with a magnetically controlled piece of piping. He would have killed them if not his friend pleading for him to stop.

Right. There were heroes next door. Best not to arouse their ire. The next thing that happened, though, was that his father, a mutant with rather similar abilities, began to teach him. For some reason, no one from that comfort room seemed to remember that a magnetic mutant was the source of the power outage the next day.

Now, it was clear. Alfred gained his ability from his father. His mother had the power to erase and fake memories; and now, they will teach him.

Over the next years, he'd be Magnekai; accountant at the eye, vigilante at night. And no one will ever know...
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Fears/Phobias: He is extremely claustrophobic.
Skills: Alfred also has an aptitude in swordmanship and close quarters combat, making him a dangerous opponent even without his abilities.

Cabin Dweller

Name: Mathias North
Alias: Envigor
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Left: Mathias' normal appearance / Right: Mathias' full-power form.

ImageImage

Powers:
  • Life-Force Manipulation -
    • Mathias can see the life-force of other beings, with brightness correlating to the amount;
    • Mathias can absorb the life-force of other beings by touch, be they trees or humans. Doing so drastically lowers the targets lifespan, at a rate of one (1) year per second, and adds it to his own. This in turn increases Mathias' own stockpiled life-force, extending lifespan and raising both his mind and body to peak human physique. It also largely removes the need for food and sleep;
    • Mathias can also expel his stockpiled life-force into others or further boost himself. There is no expenditure limit, meaning he could release several years worth of the stuff in a single railgun-like punch, or release it slowly to go above peak human for extended periods of time. Should he transfer life-force into another person, it can heal their wounds/illnesses via boosting natural bodily systems, or even extend their lifespans;
    • Full-Power Form - To truly go all-out, Mathias begins absorbing the life-force of everything around him whilst simultaneously expelling it in equal measure. Fauna and flora will die in droves to power him. Mathias' lifespan will decrease by years at time, temporarily attaining monster-like strength and speed. His flesh glows hot and heals nigh-instantly, dismembered limbs can be reattached or grown anew within minutes, and every punch feels like a grenade.

    Drawbacks & Limitations:
    • Mathias cannot see life-force of non-living beings or through walls;
    • Mathias must be in physical contact to drain life-force, and cannot drain from non-living beings (i.e. no shoes or gloves, fears robots);
    • Mathias likely attracts other beings who can sense/drain life-force, which may be stronger than him;
    • To dish out superhuman attacks, Mathias' body must also be resilient enough to come out unscathed. If this balance is wrong, he'll end up hurting himself.

    Weaknesses:
    • Like anyone else, if Mathias runs out of life-force he dies. Should he not have enough to maintain his superhuman physique or boost himself, he'll be no more dangerous than a normal person;
    • Mathias, even while boosted, lacks ranged attacks and counters to mental or illusory powers;
    • Mathias is no martial artist, and fights more like an animal with obvious telegraphed attacks.

    Equipment and weapons:
    • Generic clothing (pants, shirt, jacket, shoes, gloves);
    • 1911 pistol w/ extended magazine.

    BACKGROUND

    Nationality: Australia
    Hometown: McGuffinville

Personality: Mathias is a simple if paranoid man who enjoys a good book. He dislikes people with short lifespans/life-force, believing they're ultimately after his power. Having become addicted to the sensation of draining life-force, he'll devolve into a twitchy mess when deprived of it for too long.

Bio: Born on June 5th 1998, Mathias grew up in a 'Miracle Town' whose inhabitants almost all manifested powers. His parents, colleagues, schoolmates... he was among the select few to be normal. To make things worse, the town became a haven for supers, and living there became extraordinarily difficult without powers of his own. All through education, there was always someone incomprehensibly better than him, a super openly abusing their powers to the cheer of others. In the eyes of his community, Mathias was worthless.

Then it happened, his powers finally emerged, much to the surprise of the bullies around him. In one swift move, Mathias instinctively drained the life-force of his foes. While their stamina waned, Mathias grew in strength, invigorated by their stolen energy. As the years went on, Mathias gradually improved in using his power. After graduating and simmering down, Mathias became addicted to the invigorating rush brought on by stealing life-force, going so far as to sell his life extending powers for financial gain and to bribe officials to ignore his crimes.

A million dollars for 10 years, his services quickly spread and endless trouble came his way. Unable to take the heat, Mathias fled the country. For this he was labelled a criminal and his past activity upturned, government officials and other crazy supers were intent on monopolizing him. In several close encounters, Mathias went on to developed his full-power mode. Hateful of those who'd wronged him, Mathias now seeks to live in peace by mastering his power to eventually transcend humanity.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Fears/Phobias: Immortals, psychics/mind readers, being deprived of life-force.
Skills: Bilingual (English & Mandarin), very high pain-resistance.
    Theme Song: https://youtu.be/Jpo-Mt6vSrE
    Civilisation:
    Tier 8, Level 3, Type 7
An 8.625 civilization - according to this index
    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
    Leader: Albani Gudmund
Setting: FT (2060+), the ruling nation of a non-human, low population, galactic Empire spanning just beyond its solar system. Primarily using advanced, mass-produced droids to handle most menial tasks and to fill the ranks of its military alongside living soldiers.

    Cabin Dweller

    Name: Camille L'Oiseau
    Alias: Sonata
    Age: 25
    Gender: Female
    Image

    Image

    Powers:
    • Musical Sound Conversion: Through the use of music, Camille can convert sonic waves into other forms of energy. This can include electricity, heat, and pure blasts of kinetic energy. Higher notes produce more "offensive" types of energy conversion, such as blasts of heat or concussive waves. Lower notes produce more "defensive" types of energy conversion, such as a forcefield. Despite the fact that this may seem like a physical power, it is actually a complex and little understood branch of psionics. Camille's Athenian Particles - which are the source of psionics and other mental powers - are unique in the sense that they have a much more marked effect on the world around her. Through thinking about it clearly enough, Camille can "convert" sonic energy into the other types, by using her Athenian Particles to actually change this energy. She has learned to string together notes and certain sounds with her violin so that, when she produces this energy, it sounds less like a jittery staccato and more like the mournful wail of a violin in concert. She does not fight. She performs.
    • Hyperhearing: Due to her intimate knowledge of sonic energy and the way it moves through space, Camille has adapted a "secondary" power of hyperhearing. She can hear the individual flaps of a hummingbirds wings, or the heartbeat of someone across the room from her.

    Drawbacks & Limitations:
    • Camille needs the music in order to control her powers. It acts as a focus for her. Without it her powers would be hard to contain and direct, thus making it that much more destructive for her allies.
    • Her hyperhearing must be within the normal range of human hearing. She cannot perceive frequencies outside of the regular human ear, she just hears common sounds exponentially better than the average human.

    Weaknesses:
    • Camille is extremely vulnerable to mental attacks, due to the fact that her Athenian Particles are much easier to interact with and therefore disrupt.
    • Camille could potentially suffer from sensory overload if an enemy creates enough din to overpower her hyperhearing.

    Equipment and weapons:
    • Her violin, aptly named Banshee.
    • A rapier, passed down as a relic of her family's heritage. She has no idea how to use it, but she thought it went with the costume, so she wears it.

    BACKGROUND

    Nationality: French
    Hometown: Paris

Personality: Camille is a bit of a mystery. She is equal parts reserved and extroverted, introspective and bubbly, kind and cold. In truth, she does not know where she stands. Raised in a family that valued nothing but ambition and the heartless practice of perfection, she likes to think she abandoned those personality traits long ago. However, she will sometimes slip into old habits. She tries her best to be a kind-hearted and gentle soul to everyone she meets, and often comes off as slightly dainty. In fact, she plays into this so much that she may be considered to be a pushover. She doesn't mind when people think of her this way, because she tries very hard to be perfectly happy helping people achieve their best while she quietly pursue her own perfection. She is proper and refined, speaking with eloquence and an aristocratic lilt you would expect out of Parisian high society.

Sonata, however, is different. Camille puts on the mask and transforms into a different person. Sonata moves with the poise and grace of a seasoned hero, when in reality they are not. Sonata is a charismatic, yet faceless and genderless, persona. They handle threats and violence with levelled intelligence, smartly maneuvering through the criminal underground that they work so hard to clean up. When they fight, they are merciless, striking fear in those that would challenge them. Despite this, as much as Camille tries to emulate Sonata in real life, that cool confidence is hidden - tucked away behind the mask, refusing to surface unless Sonata themself has emerged.

Bio: Camille was born to an incredibly wealthy, and to that extend old-money, family in the heart of Paris. They practiced the rules of "old society" with some of Europe's cultural elite across the continent, meaning that they had certain expectations for the members of their family. Camille was no different. She was expected to learn, and master, both ballet and musical instruments. She took a natural tendency towards music, becoming quite prodigal at the violin by the time she was a young woman. Ballet took...more practice, but the draconian nature of her parents' teachings ensured that she didn't truly have a minute free until she was excellent at it. For her, life was a rush of practice upon practice, rehearsal upon rehearsal, and performance upon performance.

Many things changed when she was 22. After graduating from college and returning to her parents' villa for a summer stay, she had a particularly impassioned verbal spat with her mother. Retreating to her room, she turned to the one thing that offered her comfort: her violin. She played and played, for what seemed like hours on end. It was only when she felt a raging heat on her back that she realized that the house had begun to go up in flames. Fleeing as quick as she could out of her window, she looked on as the entire villa was soon swallowed by the conflagration...with her parents still inside. She was quickly ushered away by her uncle, who had an inkling of a thought that she had something to do with the blaze.

Despite his initial suspicion, it was soon revealed to Camille that her uncle was, in fact, a metahuman. And, rather than turn her in, he revealed to her that she was a metahuman in her own right. Further still, her uncle offered to help her focus her powers so as to avoid any further destructive outbursts. For a year they trained together, her uncle combining his vigilante experience with the one thing he knew that Camille could completely understand: music lessons. Once this year was complete, and Camille was around 23, her uncle presented her with a present: her very own suit, and an offer to join him in the streets of Paris to bring about their own justice to the city. For two years, she has worked tirelessly by the side of her uncle to keep order in the city. Their current target: a relatively unhinged and violent gang that seems to praise the actions against society that the powerful osteokinetic, Corpus, had done those many years ago.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Fears/Phobias: Losing control of her powers, losing the family name, and spiders.
Skills: Ballet dancing has made her extremely lithe and agile, she is fluent in French and English, and she is a master-class musician in no less than 3 instruments.
Theme Song: The Devil's Trill Sonata

Dude, no way, I was just working on a sonokinetic too XD

EDIT: And since I'm finished, here's the app. Figure I might as well post it to get some reviews even if the powers are similar. If they're deemed too similar to work I'll be happy to roll with something else, but until that happens...

    Cabin Dweller

    Name: Christine Lawrence
    Alias: Noise
    Age: 22
    Gender: Female

Powers: Christine possesses the gift of sonokinesis, the ability to create, manipulate, amplify and nullify sound.
    • Christine can create sound in her vicinity. The sound must be something that she knows very well, and the more complex it is, the more concentration it takes. A pebble hitting the asphalt is no issue in the slightest, but an entire song needs her single-minded focus. She doesn't use this ability often - most of the time she uses her powers by manipulating existing sounds - but in a pinch it can make for a good distraction or serve to send a discreet message.
    • Through the manipulation of sound Christine can distort, echo, or otherwise alter existing sounds. One way this manifests is in her ability to mimic the voices of people she has heard - the more she has listened to them speak, the more perfect the imitation will be. She can also "replay" sounds, though only if she was fully attentive and retains them in her memory.
    • Christine has the ability to amplify any sounds in her vicinity or sounds caused by objects she has touched in the last few minutes. This can go from making someone's footsteps louder to deafening sonic screams or falling pebbles that causes a thunderous rackets.
    • By far the ability Christine uses the most is that of sound nullification, which allows her to instantly mute any sounds in her vicinity and any sounds caused by objects she has touched in the last few minutes. In this fashion, she can completely mask her presence by muting her own voice, breathing, heartbeat and footsteps, allowing her to sneak around unnoticed. As long as she's close to the person or has touched them in the last few minutes, she can bestow this blessing of silence upon others as well.
    • In addition to all of the above, Christine also has the ability to manipulate her own sense of hearing, allowing her to greatly improve it in order to hear sounds further away or to focus completely on a single sound - a rhythmic heartbeat or an approaching footstep - which can come in handy.

    Drawbacks & Limitations:
    • If she creates and maintains sounds that are too complex for too long, Christine runs the risk of developing a nasty headache. The same goes for abusing her nullification powers - masking the sounds of her own presence takes no effort, but masking a scream will begin to strain her, and something loud and sudden like gunfire may cause a splitting headache as well.
    • Christine is susceptible to being harmed by any sound she amplifies if she goes too far with it. Noise cancelling headphones can help a little with that, but at some point they'll fail too. She also cannot manipulate her own sense of hearing to deafen herself.
    • If she tries to imitate someone's voice after hearing them speak only once, she will likely fail - she needs to listen to them a few times to have a good shot at succeeding.
    • Much like with the above, she can only create sounds that she has heard several times and knows by heart - otherwise she will fail.
    • The range at which her powers can function on sounds caused by objects that she has not touched in the last few minutes is of no more than a few yards, which means her scope is fairly limited.
    • She cannot enhance her hearing indefinitely, and if she does it for too long, a period of impaired or muffled hearing will follow.

    Weaknesses:
    • While Christine has no innate weaknesses that come with her powers, she is untrained in combat and a bit of a scaredy cat, preferring to avoid confrontations if at all possible by talking her way out or trying to sneak off.

    Equipment and weapons:
    • A small folding knife
    • Noise cancelling headphones
    • A smartphone
    • An old MP3 player and a spare battery
    • A reusable metallic lighter

    BACKGROUND

    Nationality: American
    Hometown: Reno

Personality: Christine is an introverted person who has difficulties approaching other people on her own. Once a connection is established, however, she's quite friendly and even known to crack a joke or two. Artistically inclined and free-spirited, she doesn't like being shackled down with rules and regulations and has a bit of a rebellious streak, though she's mellowed down since her teenage years. She often borrows things from strangers for fun and enjoys sneaking up on people she knows to give them a little fright. Her past has made her afraid of confrontations and especially those between metahumans. As a result, as mentioned earlier, she prefers to avoid them if at all possible, whether by talking or by escaping. This can make her seem like a bit of a pushover at times.

Bio: Christine was born in the city of Reno to Henry and Sonia Lawrence, proud owners of a corner store. Thanks to Argus' blood tests, they found out that their daughter was a Homo Melior, something that made them firmly believe that she was destined for great things. Unfortunately, they would not live to see their mistake. At the tender age of six years, the girl witnessed as a great battle tore through the city, heroes and villains locked in a bitter struggle for their side's supremacy, with the souls of the entire city at stake. It was the collateral damage caused by one of these heroes that ultimately caused the untimely demise of Christine's parents, by collapsing a section of their house on them. The terrified girl could only drag herself to the darkest, furthest little corner she could find and hide there. Not a sound could be heard coming from her, not a whimper, not a sob. This was the first time that her powers manifested, completely nullifying all the noise she made. She remained like this for hours after the battle had ended, until a rescue team managed to find her.

After the incident, she was taken in by an aunt who lived in a nearby town. The normally cheerful and outgoing child became very introverted and solitary, an understandable consequence of the traumatic event she went through. Going into her teenage years, she developed a troublesome rebellious streak, but due to her fear of confrontation, she expressed this by breaking the rules without getting caught. It was here that she began actively honing and experimenting with her powers to aid herself with them. Mastering the nuances of silence, she began sneaking into other people's houses and taking their belongings in a sort of childish attempt to reassure herself of her own power. This continued for a few years until Christine's aunt caught her and threatened to turn her in to Argus if she didn't return everything and promise to stop.

As she continued to mature and stopped abusing her powers for personal gain, she instead took a keen interest in music, especially that which expressed a spirit of rebellion and noncomformity. After graduating from high school, she took a job at a nearby store to make some money on the side. She started dating a guy - that she later dumped - who was friends with a guy who knew another guy whose brother was in a band, so through these connections she eventually began to work as a freelance sound technician of sorts for a few local bands, using her various special abilities to help them during jam sessions, rehearsals and concerts. These aspiring musicians began affectionately referring to her as Noise and applauded her work, making her slowly begin to gain some notoriety in the music industry. Her freelance job is still not very profitable, however, so she continues to work her day job to date.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Fears/Phobias: Heroes and villains, confrontations, spiders, snakes, wide open spaces
Skills: Christine can sing, play several instruments and make a mean grilled cheese sandwich
Theme Song: I'll find one later

I see some terrifyingly cool combination maneuvers you and I could pull off.

Also imho the style and presentation of the powers is different enough that there isn't an issue. The only real similarity is sound, but that sound is means to an end for Camille whereas for Christine its moreso her direct product.

Yeah there's definitely some big potential for combos there :P And I agree that there's quite a few differences, but it was still one heck of a coincidence.
