-->After German reunification in 1990, the FDP’s popularity and party base swells because of its deeply pro-capitalist stance and an increased interest in the party from the former GDR. (Note: this happened IRL, to begin with) To keep this success going, the FDP decides to become the party of the masses (unlike the SDP which portrayed itself as the worker’s party, or the CSD/CSU which was the more conservative/traditionalist party. The revamp occurred from German Reunification until the 1994 elections and was overseen by Klaus Kinkel. These results led to the FDP becoming the third-largest party in the Bundestag in the 1994 elections.

-->The 1998 elections were a repeat as the CSU/CDU and the SDP lost ground again to the FDP. This was in part because of the FDP strategically campaigning in the former GDR and becoming more of the centrist libertarian party in German politics, a shift underway since the early 1990s.

-->In 2009, the FDP and CSU/CDU formed a coalition center-right government. It was during the economic crisis of the time that the FDP and CSU/CDU showed that they were able to keep the German economy healthy compared to other EU nations.

Partially in an attempt to “go green” but mainly to reduce Germany’s reliance on foreign energy sources, a strong push for nuclear and renewables took place. The first was the legalization of marijuana, the next was the increase of the German military budget to 3% of the GDP, the partial privatization of state assets, increases in education spending, increases in infrastructure spending, reduced internet surveillance, and all while cutting taxes on the lower and middle class. Compounding all this was a fairly aggressive green growth policy and attempts to turn Eastern Germany into the German Silicone Valley.

I am thinking of Russia plus Belarus and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan). Alternative history in which after the collapse of USSR, Russia and those former Soviet Republics decided to form a Confederation.
