Technically speaking, your clever admiral knew a warfleet would emerge away from the Relay, and so defended the planet itself.

I read up on trans-relay assaults.

Typically the danger comes from being in a pre-targeted area. However, by jumping in as an actual full fleet and even then, doing whatever you can to maximize drift would put you off from where you typically will enter. This is what prevented the battle from taking place right at the relay. I didn't want to put my fleet in a kill box.

The thing to also remember with space warfare in ME is that superluminal sensors don't exist, but superluminal travel and communication do.

So, if a fleet is inbound on, say, a strategically important world, it is functionally impossible for a defender to know they are going to be attacked until the attack is begun, barring a large bubble of scouting frigates.

Thus combat effectively always takes place on top of important worlds or things like Relays, points where you can guarantee an attacker will pass through. Trying to intercept an enemy in open space is fraught with peril of them slipping past you and accomplishing their objectives.

Since semi-cannon/non-cannon factions are now being accepted, I am interested in joining as semi-cannonical faction. My idea is claiming 2181 Despoina and some nearby planets. The Leviathans will be the 'leaders' of the faction, but hidden and not known to outsiders, using their indoctrination to control another specie. Thinking of either a made up alien race or a human colonies/fleets gone rogue after indoctrination and declaring themselves an independent power.

Or you could ask for Noveria. Probably not the biggest military out there, but it seems people like Espionage this game and Research is always big. Why not combo it with Noveria, the weird human science world that happens to be housing a Rachni Queen.. for some reason.
