February 22, 12:07 AM

A red RX-7 rolled into the gas station and came to a stop at one of the pumps. It was raining and the place was mostly empty this late. The only other car around, a beat up Civic hatchback, rolled out into the night, leaving Saki alone with her thoughts. She took another glance around and pulled the handbrake. Her heart pounded in her chest harder than it ever had before and her car's lopsided idle matched her anticipation. She stared at the clock and bit her lip. It was about time to make her decision. Hang out here and be the first to arrive or roll in at the last second for her grand reveal?

Saki checked her mirrors as she rolled slowly into place. The road ahead was consumed by darkness - surely nobody would be around. She stopped the car and clutched in, pulling the handbrake again and blipping the throttle just to remind herself that she was ready to go. She glanced at the clock again and centered herself. Still plenty of time. Nobody in their right mind would show up an hour and forty-five minutes early. She watched the tachometer wobble for another moment before turning her attention back to the road ahead. Taking a final breath, she put her foot back onto the gas pedal and held the engine at the speed she wanted. Her foot eased on the clutch just enough to put tension in the drivetrain and she counted herself off. 3! 2! 1! The RX-7 screamed off the line as she buried the throttle, dumped the clutch, and released the handbrake as quickly as she could.

The starting section of the course was as demanding as ever and Saki did her best to maintain her speed through the tricky series of medium left-rights as the first of so many hairpin turns came into view. Hard on the brakes, downshift once into second, flick left and then hard back right. Let the car rotate just enough, catch the slide, bury the throttle and pray to every god you know for a good exit. Upshift and hold third gear through the right, left, right, and immediately on the brakes and hard back to the left. The fun's just starting. Another series of sweeping turns, a kink to the left and another hairpin right. Stay focused. Another kink. Hairpin left. Stay close to the guard rail on the outside, now the inside of a gentle move back right. Redline third gear, hard on the brakes, another downshift and another Scandinavian flick to the right. Left kink on exit. Hairpin left. A kink to the right. A kink to the left and an immediate hairpin right, open this time. You're not even halfway done. Exit speed is life. Straight ahead and bury the middle pedal again. Every hairpin is different and this one is tight. Don't over-rotate the car. The red FD squirmed on corner exit as Saki made a big correction on-throttle. She swore loudly. Another right-left into another wide hairpin right. She redlined the car again in third on the run to the next hairpin left. One last right-left and one last hairpin right. Gently over to the guardrail again to set up for a tiny kink to the right. If they haven't proven themselves by now, this is their last chance. A wide open hairpin with a sweeping exit. Downhill like the rest of them but exponentially faster. Again she sent the car sideways, this time maintaining a much shallower angle as the car slid across the slick pavement. Accelerate again through two more kinks. This isn't Initial D you can't just do the jumps on stock suspension. Resist the temptation. She threw the car into another hairpin. One more kink. Left, right, left, right, open left, one more right. A sweep and another sweep. One more left. There's a small parking lot on the right side of the road at the end of this straight section. It's your last chance to collect yourself. Back into it with a pair of isolated switchbacks, a short straight, and a square left. The final five hairpins remain. Saki, starting to feel fatigue, went hard on the brakes again, a little too late this time. Trail braking deep into the corner, she cursed again as the car understeered and kicked the clutch to rotate herself away from the guardrail. It was a major loss of momentum coming into the next series of switchbacks. Easily two seconds gone in a single mistake. She hit her usual braking point in spite of the difference in speed and turned the car in, shaking her head. The FD, clearly more capable than she was, once again rotated smoothly and predictably. She picked up the throttle again, confidence coming back into her. The next hairpin was almost identical, just in the opposite direction. Three more to go. It wouldn't set any records but nobody drove their best on a warmup. Open hairpin right into hairpin left into open hairpin right and one last square left. The hard part was done. She finished out the course without any other issues and started up the other pass just as the banshee shrieks of her vicious 13b REW had finished echoing into the night.

Suzuki checked the time on their wrist watch as they stuffed their uniform back into it's duffle bag and made a B-line to the parking lot.11:20 If they drove with urgency, they'd make it in time. Grabbing their coat from the coat rack they bid a farewell to the other ambulance drivers and wished them luck.

"Oi Suzuki I thought we were going to the bar?"
"Nah sorry, my dad needs me to watch the garage tonight." The other drivers groaned but accepted the excuse as made it to the lot and got into their mundane looking Toyota pickup, their father's. Driving cautiously through the night they couldn't help but get excited about tonight's prospects, so much so they didn't realize they ran two red lights on the way home. Arriving back home at around 11:30, they parked the truck and made it to the garage where Kira was still awake.

"Hey Kira, how's my baby doing after last night?" they pulled up a cigarette and lit it whilst approaching Kira who was under the hood of the E30.

"Well you snapped a belt so I had to pull some shit out of my ass to replace it. God you and your Euro cars..." He grumbled as he pulled away and held a hand out to recieve his own cigarette. Suzuki complied and they shared a quick smoke while Suzuki got into the driver's seat. They reached over onto the passenger's seat and retrieved the steering wheel, then fastened it into position. "Just be careful out there, the scanner you want is still ridiculously out of stock for at least another 2 months."

"Eh don't worry about it, I can outrun them." They chuckled as they started the car up and hearing the loud roar of the V8 fill the auto shop. "Now let's smoke them out." And like a bat out of hell the pastel pink BMW came racing out of the shop, swerving onto the street before straightening out and racing down the street. The radio blasting out music from a mixtape comprised of mostly fighting game music and a few songs back from Brazil. Occasionally slowing for the oncoming patrol car, they arrived at the gas station at around 12:20.

2:00 in the morning on a Wednesday was a strange time for a street race, Kenjiro thought, cracking open a Boss canned coffee in the break room of Tanaka Garage. Either Mochizaka isn't going to show up, or he's just some kid with a 180SX who thinks a set of secondhand rims and an air filter makes him the next Fujiwara Takumi. Whatever the case, it was an excuse to hit the mountains. Putting some mouthy kid in his place was just going to be a bonus. He grabbed a wrench and adjusted his rear spoiler's angle of attack by a degree or two, checked his tire pressure, topped off the oil, and looked at his watch. 10:30. What the hell, I'm out of here. I don't want to sit around on my ass all night and there's nothing to do on a customer car that can't wait until tomorrow. His '74 Datsun 620 rumbled to life before settling into the RB-series' trademark purr. The six-cylinder swap hadn't done the pickup's weight distribution any favors but it sounded way better than the old SR20 swap and had proven itself to be much more reliable, even with its fair share of boost. With the heater set firmly on high and Deep Purple's Made In Japan cranking through the Pioneers, he backed out of the shop's driveway and soon settled in for the long, straight, flat highway slog. The road didn't start to get remotely fun until you got past the Kiyotaki interchange, and with 96 kilometers to go until that point he was glad he'd taken the trouble to integrate the donor car's cruise control despite how much of a pain in the ass it had been.

90 minutes later:

Now it was time for the fun part. Kenjiro slipped on a pair of expensive Italian leather driving gloves, tightened his seatbelt, hit the rocker switch for the exhaust cutouts and promptly ripped off a full-boost launch out of the emergency pulloff area. The sticky Nitto tires spun through most of first and chirped the one-two shift as the small, squat pickup launched itself up the mountain. Top of second and maybe into third, brake and downshift, turn, ease into the gas, dance on the edge of rear-end grip, show the live rear axle who's the boss here, floor it and fling it at the next hairpin. Repeat as necessary or until giggling like an excited schoolgirl, whichever comes first. A thin line of sweat broke out on his forehead. Despite having driven the roads around here at ten-tenths in everything from a Rover Mini to a supercharged Diablo SV, Irohazaka was always an adrenaline rush. Mostly in a good way. Once at the top, he slowed down and relaxed; he'd need all of his concentration for the run back down. A short drive out to Chuzenji Lake's ferry terminal and and a contemplative cigarette by the water's edge soothed his nerves. The faint rumble of a BMW V8 in the distance piqued his interest, though. He shivered, suddenly conscious of the cold, and zipped his bomber jacket the rest of the way up before starting the truck back up and making his way into town with the exhaust in its quiet mode. Kenjiro may have been a speed freak, but he was a considerate driver in everyday life. The ENEOS station was empty apart from his vintage Datsun and a decade-newer E30 BMW painted an arresting shade of metalflake pink. No sign of Mochizaka . . . or the mystery RX-7, come to think of it, he thought idly, filling up with high-octane. It's early, though. Only 12:25.

Saki made a stop at the public toilet at the bottom of the mountain. Back in her car, she finally made her decision. She'd hide the fact that she had made the posts until 2 and if anyone was there before then, she'd play dumb and act like she was also here just to see what was up. The engine, still warm from the run, barked back into life and she rolled out of the parking lot to make her way up the mountain. The uphill route, much less demanding than the downhill, began almost right next to where she had stopped and she almost never did a run at speed to cool the engine, the tires, and especially the brakes. It was also useful for killing time and she was thankful for that.

A while later she had finished the ascent and the ENEOS was in sight with two cars she didn't recognize parked there. A pink BMW and an older Datsun truck. The red FD turned into the lot around 12:52, breaking the silence with the strange idle of a bridgeported rotary. She was getting low on gas so she brought the car to a stop at the other pump, got out, and started to fill her own car with 100 octane fuel. As much as she loved her RX7, she wished she had a moped or anything more fuel efficient. Racing is an expensive hobby, after all. With a full tank of gas, she lifted the Mazda's back hatch and retrieved a small bottle of 2-stroke oil. All the rotary forums insisted that premixing was the way to go for reliability and she had no reason to dispute that. Removing the nozzle and replacing it at the pump, she opened the bottle and squeezed the entire thing into the gas tank before replacing the cap and closing the door. Saki took a look around for a bin, didn't see one, and tossed the empty lump of plastic back into the car before she closed the hatch. She waved at the guy in the truck while she slid back into the car, fired the engine again, and moved over next to the wild BMW.

Suzuki exited their E30 and leaned on the bumper whilst unlocking the hood to allow it to reveal the car's engine swapped M60 V8. They lit another cigarette and tried whistled over the roar of their collective engines, inviting the other driver to met them outside of the confines of their vehicles.

"Oi, come on out. Don't worry I don't bite..."

Kenjiro yawned and cracked his neck, shifting himself upright in the seat. 12:55? Wow. He'd gotten back in the pickup to keep warm and had dozed off to a Casiopea album his girlfriend had left in the underseat-mounted CD changer. A definitely non-stock FD RX-7 had rolled in, piloted by a fairly good-looking girl with brown hair. The pink E30's V8 rumble mixed with the uneven brap-brap-brap idle of the modded rotary engine and, after a quick detour into the station's convenience store for another Boss and a melonpan as a late night snack, with his inline six's tenor purr as he moved the Datsun away from the pumps and backed it in on the other side of the FD before shutting it off, stepping out, and leaning against the cab's B-pillar with his arms folded. "I guess we know who the mystery RX-7 is," he callled over to the BMW's owner, an androgynous redheaded chick smoking a cigarette.

Saki shut her car off as the Datsun parked next to her car. She hesitated as the driver got out before she exited the car herself. "So I guess we're all here for the same thing?" she asked no-one in particular, leaning against the closed driver door. She really hoped her bluff paid off but there was no chance they hadn't figured out she was the one who'd been running alone the whole time. "I might as well admit to being the mystery red FD as well," she chuckled, "you can't see much with the hood open."

"If you mean the mysterious Mochizaka's challenge, then that's what I'm here for." Kenjiro finished off his coffee before arcing the empty can into a nearby rubbish bin and taking a pack of cigarettes out of his jacket. "Normally I wouldn't bother coming out this way from Shimotsuma, but I couldn't resist a challenge," he said, cupping a hand around his elegantly engraved gold Zippo lighter to keep the wind out. "Hope you don't mind the smoke." Opening the door and yanking the hood release, he propped the hood up, revealing an immaculately detailed RB25DET engine, a gleaming chrome turbocharger, a custom-made carbon fiber intake manifold, and a beefy aluminum strut tower brace. "I'll show you mine if you show me yours", he teased. "You wouldn't believe the fabrication work it took to make this fit."

"Yup I'm here for that too," said Saki, walking around the front of Kenjiro's car, "I'm pretty local so I'd be out here anyways." He opened the hood and she leaned in, "Holy hell how much money do you have in this?" she asked, taking note of the custom carbon work. "That intake must've cost you a fortune, how did you even get custom carbon stuff in the first place?" She shook her head and looked up, "I guess I'll pop the hood if everyone else is, I don't have nearly as much custom work in my car," she added, walking back to her car and pulling the lever. The hood popped up and she fumbled for the latch before she got it all the way open, revealing a painted strut brace covering a stock looking engine, "You'll have to trust me," she said with a laugh, "I had it street ported when I got it but I took it back after a few days when they offered to do a full bridge port. I'm thinking about taking it back to get the rotors lightened too."

"Less money than you think. Being a family employee of Tanaka Garage comes with more benefits than dental insurance," he deadpanned. "The hardest part of building this was cutting the firewall and transmission tunnel out and moving all that metal up and back to fit an inline-six. The carbon work is something we at the firm had commissioned from Top Secret for a client's GT-R, but unfortunately he wrapped his 911 Turbo around a tree one night and totaled himself as well as the car. I kept looking at that on the shelf and looking at my engine bay, and one day I just thought 'hell, nobody else is using it.' Engine's from an R32 GTS-T, massaged a little. ECU tune, that intake, high-flow throttle body, so on and so forth. Stage 1 turbocharger upgrade, plus intercooler. 340 at the rear wheels." He took a thorough look at Saki's rotary. "I've never daily-driven anything with a rotary engine. Are the apex seals and oil consumption horror stories true? Either way, nice car."

Suzuki whistled lowly looking at the elegant monstrosity of Kenjiro's car, examining the intricate chrome work and couldn't help but giving a sporting round of applause. "I'll say, you have officially shown me the oddest mod job I have ever seen." They smiled a little before peaking a little deeper in to get a better look at the engine itself, "man I haven't seen a RB25 in a while, we don't get these guys at my dad's shop anymore... Well at least not as often." They took snuffed out the roach of their cigarette and pulled out a second one, "I swear if I wasn't married to my M60 I'd be on my knees begging for her." Finishing up their spiel, Suzuki turned to the RX-7 and rubbed their hands together in anticipation.

"Now this bad baby, even as a stock it's still a beauty. My friend loves these guys, it's kinda the reason I responded to the forum post. Partially because I wanted to see what my fatherland could show me, and partially to rub it in his face." Suzuki whistled at the engine and was practically taking full photographs with their eyes. "I put some work in my car but not nearly as much as Mr. Datsun over there."

"Honestly the stories are only true if you're not careful. It's not like a regular engine, they love being thrashed on. I've seen stories of people driving rotary cars like a grandma and having all kinds of trouble." said Saki off-handedly. Just then, Suzuki walked over to join them, offering more praise than Saki had expected for her car. "Honestly, I almost bought this just because it looked so good," she agreed, "I have a soft spot for weird engines and this is Mazda's best rotary yet. --in a street car, that is. I don't have nearly enough money for an r26b, as much as I want one." She laughed, "I waited four days to download a video of them winning Le Mans. I'd give anything to hear a four rotor in person."
