Three shots rang out. Artemis’ eyes widened as he realized what was happening. He was being shot at. “Cassius!” He cried out to his twin brother in the room. A bullet whizzed past his head, making a small hole through the door. He had to act fast. Thank god he always had an emergency bag ready to go in the corner of his room. Ducking his head to avoid the bullets flying through his door, he heard the cries of his family telling his father to stop, but he wouldn’t. The bullets wouldn’t stop. Even Tessa was yelling, but probably for his father to keep shooting. Artemis couldn’t make it out. There was too much noise. As Cassius smashed the window, and the two of them got ready to jump two stories, the door burst open and was flung to the ground. Time stopped for a moment. An angry, drunken man wielding a double-barreled shotgun standing in the doorway, aiming right at Artemis. There was Ava, his older sister, a look of terror on her face, and Thomas, standing behind her, the same expression on his face. There was Chloe, his evil sister, and Tessa, his even more evil cousin. At that moment, a hand pushed him through the window, and a shot rang out.
As he fell to the ground, time resumed. He was plummeting towards the ground, and a horrifying scream rang out. He landed on the ground, and something landed next to him. A body. An indescribable feeling came over him as he realized what just happened. Cassius’ body lay next to him, his breathing raspy. “No....No....No no no…” Artemis was in shock. He couldn’t move. Cassius struggled to move his hand but brought it to Artemis’ hand. “Artemis....” He whispered. He uttered one word before his eyes rolled back and he fell to the ground. “Run.” And with that, Cassius fell, dead. Screams rang out from the balcony above, and more gunshots fired, pelting the ground. Artemis, still in shock, reached under Cassius’ shirt and ripped off his necklace, with a black crystal on the end. And then he ran. Tears flooded his vision, but that didn’t matter. He just had to reach somewhere safer than this. Anywhere but here.
He ran towards the front of the palace, where a crowd of onlookers had gathered, trying to find out what was happening. A line of guards held them back, but as soon as the crowd saw the distraught prince running, they surged. The guards were trampled, and the crowd started to grow in size. People surged towards where the incident had happened, keen on finding out, but quickly turned the other way in panic and terror as shots were fired at them. Artemis put his hood up and reached his Lamborghini Veneno Roadster, one of the only ones of its kind. He had gotten it for his 16th birthday, and it was custom built to fit five people. The dark grey colors against the crimson red that outlined it was stunning, as was the performance. He quickly unlocked the car, got in, and locked it again, a trick he learned to keep unwanted people out.
He turned the key in the ignition, starting the car. It came to life, humming with power. He pressed the gas, and the car shot off, hitting 200 mph in less than 3 seconds. He shot through the streets, zig-zagging and carefully navigating the way to the Westminister Cathedral. Everyone else in the family was there, his family had just left early. He had to make it. He pulled up, and a few other people in the family had already heard him coming. It wasn’t uncommon to hear the sounds of his Lamborghini late at night, so much so that a few people had already memorized the engine sounds. As he pulled up and rolled down the window, his grandmother, the Queen, rushed over, followed by his cousin Richard, and two other people, only one of whom he recognized to be Natallia Cinouta, his mentor and teacher, and a strange man dressed in a fine suit. “Artemis, dear! What is the matter?” Eliose asked a sense of urgency in her voice. “I’m not sure. All I know is that Cassius is dead and dad is drunk. Also...it happened again.” The small crowd around her gasped in dismay, hearing that Prince Cassius had died. A woman towards the back fainted, almost comically. Her eyes grew sharp. “Richard, get in the car. Natallia and Vic, keep them safe. I need to get back to the palace. And Artemis...don’t do it unless you absolutely need to. I’ll sort this mess out. In the meantime, try to get to Canada. I’ll have a counterpart there to meet you and instruct you on what to do next.” The youngers silently did what she said, and climbed in the back of the Veneno. Natallia and Vic followed, with Vic awkwardly crammed in next to Richard, and Natallia in the passenger seat.
With that, Artemis, not even waiting for everyone to get their seatbelts on, pressed the gas, and the car shot off again. He dodged in and out of the weave of traffic, carefully dodging the cars along the way. Within a few seconds, four black SUVs pulled up alongside the Veneno, which was rather impressive, seeing as they were speeding along around 200 mph. Instead of trying to pull the Veneno over, they all started their sirens and escorted the car to the airport. Where it would normally take an average car driving at the speed limit 30 to 40 minutes to reach the London City Airport, the group arrived within four minutes. As they pulled up, a gate opened, and the four SUVs escorted the Veneno into a black C-17. The car was locked down into the aircraft, and the group was shown to the cockpit, where an array of seats were waiting for them. Artemis took the middle seat, behind the two pilots, and the rest of the group filled in on cushioned seats in a segment behind the cockpit, separated by an opaque curtain.
The aircraft quickly took off, and was almost immediately flanked by two F-35 aircraft. There was minimal chatter for the first few minutes, and it was mainly the pilots communicating with ground units and the two fighter jets flanking them.
