Bio: Born as the youngest of three daughters in a Noileaner Lewisian family, Val grew up learning the skills of a typical noblewoman. The Maxwells are minor Lewisian nobility (no relation to the current emperor), gentry who no longer have as much of the influence or wealth they used to have in their glory days..just enough to keep a spot in court and not much more. Once upon a time they had been quite powerful, their money and influence made through banking. Their mother, Salvia Maxwell governed her daughters in the opposite way she was raised, as she had been raised to be married off in order to raise her family’s standing and not much else. Salvia had learned to manage a household, spin, weave, dance and the art of conversation along with some practical education. As the only daughter and a noted beauty, she was a somewhat attractive prospect although her family’s lowered standing put a bit of a damper on things. Her desperate parents were eager to get her an attractive match, and settled on Adrian Culpepper, the younger son of a powerful noble family of knights. She protested bitterly, as the young man had a reputation for womanizing and drinking but a young woman’s wishes didn’t exactly factor into her marriage. On the night of the betrothal party, she was nowhere to be found...having run off and eloped with her cousin Charles, the man she really loved two days before. And it was into this scandalous marriage that Val was born.
Salvia the Elder was determined that her daughters would not suffer the same fate of being sold off like cattle that she nearly endured, and to that end she made sure they were educated in the same manner as if they were sons. Things were comfortable for them financially, but not as much socially. They were pariahs even within their own family and the only reason they hadn’t been completely disinherited was because Charles was an only child. This state of affairs continued until Val was thirteen, and Salvia’s brother Desmond became head of the family. He had always been close to his sister and had missed her during her banishment, so he used his newfound power to welcome her back. Valerian studied voraciously as a child at her father’s and uncle’s knee, her favorite subjects being anatomy and philosophy. Since she probably wouldn’t contract a noble marriage due to the “taint” of her conception, she was determined to make a name for herself in the world by her own merit. When she was sixteen she was apprenticed to Dr. Henry Beauchamp, a respected physician to whom she would become very close, referring to him as “Grandpére.” She studied under him until she turned twenty-three, when she ventured out on her own to expand her knowledge of different medical techniques.
She had intended to start her own practice back home, but the more Val traveled, the less she had wanted to return to Lewisia. She missed her family, but here nobody knew who she was. Nobody would ask about her family connections, or look at her and her sisters sideways in other parts of the continent. Here, she was just free to be herself and in that she relished her freedom. One day she settled down for a bit in the Kingdom of the Cleave, starting out as a local doctor in the capital. She’d treat anyone, regardless of their ability to pay and so she found herself often being paid in food or goods. Life was fairly uneventful until one day, a patient came to her door. Judging by the finery of his bloodstained clothing and the guards holding him up on either side, he was a nobleman and the men with him demanded that she help him. While she was seeing to his injuries, he engaged her in conversation. She was impressed with his determination to withstand the pain, and he was impressed with her skill at stitching up his wounds. Having to stay with her and her small staff of assistants for a few days while he recovered, he revealed his name to her...Alexander Crosse, son of Cleavan nobility and one of King Bismaric’s personal knights in training. He had injured himself while training for the upcoming tourney that month, and when he came around again (one of several times) to thank her and offer payment, he invited her to come to the tourney with him as his companion.
A tourney meant a lot of injured men and women would need medical care, and so she agreed...but before the bloody work began she spent most of her time with Alexander, until he was called away by the king. Unfortunately he couldn’t compete due to his injuries but he was still needed for assistance. After that, she would see to the injured along with the other medical personnel, and she was seeing to one such knight when Alexander came into the medical tent with the king behind him. The young man introduced the two of them, and the king seemed fairly impressed by her work. They had a short, casual conversation and she thought that would be the end of it. The more time she spent with Alec (as she called him) however, eventually he invited her to court...she hadn’t been in a royal court in such a long while, it was almost awkward. To say she felt out of place would be an understatement, but she eventually settled into an odd routine.
She married Alexander a year after arriving in the Cleave, and they welcomed their son Maxwell (having no sons to carry on the family name, this was her way of preserving it) that next winter. Once she had a position at court, the nobles started to come to her sometimes for treatments or help with minor injuries, and after three years at court the king offered to make Val his royal physician, as the post had been vacant for some time. She happily accepted, and has been maintaining that position ever since. However, she hasn’t forgotten her practice in the town and when things are alright at court she makes her way down to the capital and continues her work there.
Equipment: A black leather bag containing herbs and ingredients for medicines, as well as various surgical tools. She also has a short sword she keeps on her for protection, a gift sent to her by her eldest sister.
