Yes, you can have your character be old friends with Mr. Grayson's father. As for the horse, if your character is riding a horse or other animal, then he is most likely providing additional security to the slower moving vehicles.
You have lifted a great weight from my shoulders! Thank you!

NAME: Josiah Callahan
SEX: Male
AGE:49
IMAGE/DESCRIPTION:
SKILLS/WEAKNESSES: Gunsmithing/modification, shooting, emergency medicine/first aid
REASON/ROLE IN CONVOY: Security, first aid, some cargo hauling
GEAR/BELONGINGS: Colt Monitor automatic with spare mag. 120 rounds of .30-06 Springfield, 40 of which are in the two mags for the Colt Monitor.
BIOGRAPHY: Born in a small town in the mountains of Colorado, Josiah Callahan grew up in a military family, with his father often away on active duty. When his father was home, however, they had a close bond, with the senior Callahan taking his son on hikes in the unspoiled Rocky Mountains and teaching him to fish, to ski, to drive - and to shoot. With his family's military history going back to the Civil War, there was an unspoken expectation that he would follow in his father's footsteps, but the young Josiah had taken an interest in medicine. In the end, his desire to aid the injured and sick and his admiration for his father's service led him to pursue both paths, becoming a combat medic in the US Army. Though ostensibly in a non-combat role, the realities of modern warfare meant that Josiah more often than not carried a rifle, and he excelled. At the age of 28, after 8 years of service, he received an honorable discharge. Following his discharge Josiah pursued a career as a paramedic. When the plague came he became part of a Disaster Medical Assistance Team for FEMA. Though there was often little they could do for victims of the plague, Josiah's medical expertise proved indispensable. As things grew more desperate Josiah often found himself using his other training, that in firearms, just as much as his medical training. Eventually orders stopped coming in, and some time after that other members of his team started becoming sick. Eventually, Callahan was the only one left. As time went on after this he ended up mostly guarding caravans traveling between what was left of America's cities, providing both protection and medical assistance. Though technically a mercenary - his services aren't free - Josiah isn't really in it for himself and won't take off running when a typical mercenary or guard would leave their charge to their fate. In a way, Josiah doesn't consider his responsibilities as a paramedic to have ended; he's just meeting them in a different way. Mostly moving where the caravans took him, he has ended up mostly in the east for the past few years, and looks forward to getting back out west. Armed with the truck he received from his father and his great-grandfather's fighting rifle, he hopes to be able to serve this latest caravan well.
Josiah has a fascination with the history and mechanics of firearms, largely thanks to his father, and is able to modify existing weapons in both usual and creative ways.
VEHICLE TYPE: truck
MODEL: 1968 M724 Kaiser Jeep dump truck
FUEL SOURCE: Biofuel
ROLE IN CONVOY: cargo, security
MODIFICATIONS: The venerable inline 6 engine the truck was built with was replaced years ago with a more powerful biofuel V6, boosting its top speed from 55 miles per hour to around 75. Most of the undercarriage and other more mechanical parts have been replaced at one time or another with better-condition stock parts. The hydraulic dump bed was probably added sometime in the previous century. Also of note is a winch on the front of the truck.
Less essential modifications include an AM/FM radio and a cb radio in the interior. The truck also just got a fresh set of tires.

North Better-than-You wrote:NAME: Caveman
SEX: Male
AGE: 32
DESCRIPTION: A crazy, dirty, unkempt beard and long ratty hair. His muscular hairy arms and torso are covered by a tiny leather vest. Ripped jeans that don't quite fit attempt to cling to his legs. Several burn marks are visible on his hands, and his feet are rugged and calloused. He wears no shoes.
SKILLS/WEAKNESSES: Fire, hunting, fire, smashing, and fire. Caveman not too good with the maps though.
REASON/ROLE IN CONVOY: Caveman likes smashing things, and he heard through his earwax that there would be lots of smashing things on the convoys. Not to mention he watched a movie about Boise once and has longed to go there ever since, to see if the famous Napolean Dynamite still lives there. He carries 400 pounds of raw meat, that he wishes to give to Napolean as a gift.
GEAR/BELONGINGS: Several lighters, flint and steel, harpoon gun, crowbar.
BIOGRAPHY: Caveman was never too popular with people before the apocalypse. They thought he smelled bad or needed a shave or any number of other reasons, which were usually put in his termination reports at work. It probably didn't help that he had an IQ of lower than 90. After the apocalypse though, everything changed. Now he had a cool nickname, a job that he could keep, and nobody seemed to mind the smell anymore. Caveman liked the Apokalypse.
VEHICLE TYPE: Car
MODEL: 1969 Ford Mustang, with a campfire in place of the rear seats.
FUEL SOURCE: Firewood, to light the fire that runs the engine.
ROLE IN CONVOY: Protection
MODIFICATIONS: Campfire in place of back row of seats, and a velvet pillow in the trunk for Caveman's precious crowbar.
IMAGE/DESCRIPTION: A rusty Ford Mustang with a weird portable campfire in the back seat, and no intact windows. The roof is crushed in.

NAME: Sheriff Wyatt
GENDER: Male
AGE: Late 40s to early 50s
DESCRIPTION: Generally wears a range coat, jeans, and a cowboy hat. Still wears his Sheriff badge. Has a white shemagh around his neck. This should go without saying, but boots, vest, gear, gloves, etc.
SKILLS: Very great in people, knows how to solve problems, control a crowd, and manage competing interests. Can also ride horses well, and is a good shot. He is also physically fit and of good character. Of course, this is all a given considering he was a sheriff.
WEAKNESSES: I'm gonna put good character here, also, as some may see that as a con. Wyatt is somewhat depressed and unmotivated due to events that will be revealed in the biography.
This next thing is both a strength and a weakness; he has a desire for an orderly society and sees the best in people, and wants the best for and from people.
REASON IN CONVOY: Destitute, was offered the job and he accepted.
ROLE IN CONVOY: Escort
EQUIPMENT(this is where it gets fun): First and foremost, his cowboy hat. Made from the finest rabbit fur, it's been with him since before the apocalypse.
His main arm is his Department-issued Colt M4 Carbine in .556 NATO. He is also equipped with a decorated Winchester Model 1892 "Saddle Ring" carbine in .44-40. This was a hunting rifle owned by a friend of his, who willed it to him. He keeps the rifle slung across his back. His other long arm is a Winchester Model 1897 "Trench shotgun" in 12 gauge kept in a saddle. He used it for home-defense before the apocalypse, and he inherited it from his father, a WW1 veteran.
His most relevant firearm, and most often used one, is his 7.5" barreled Colt Single Action Army in .44-40. This gun is special to him because it was his old ancestor's, Jerry. It has a nickel finish and pearl grips, with fancy engravings. Wyatt used the SAA instead of his department-issued Glock in the Sheriff days. Another useful fact is that his pistol and rifle use the same ammunition.
Of course, ammunition goes without saying.
He also has equipped two knives, a sheathed KA-BAR USMC Combat Knife, partial serrations, and a pocketed Leatherman Signal multitool. He also keeps a crowbar in his saddle. He sports Aviator sunglasses for harsh sunlight and keeps them in a case when not in use(indoors). He also has a pair of earplugs for hearing protection(from his Sheriff days), kept in a case on his collar.
He always stays strapped with a wallet containing important things like "resource cards," a radio(for comms, phones don't work well anymore), a flashlight, a pen, a whistle 'round his neck, and a pair of handcuffs. While he may not be enforcing the law anymore, he still needs to restrain people every once in a while. He keeps in his left breast pocket(over his heart) a picture of his late wife from their wedding.
I'm not sure if this counts, but he has a pet dog, too. He is a German Shepherd named Hund. He's a good dog. Good boy.
BIOGRAPHY: Before all this, Wyatt was a Johnson County Sheriff in beautiful Kansas. He was loved by the community, and he spent his days helping people, and on the weekends he liked to shoot and hunt. He owned a nice little home in Overland Park. He also owned horses and was an experienced rider.
When apocalypse hit, the Sheriff followed the traditional plan and left the major urban center for a rural area. He went south and was easily able to survive in the wild, but his longing for an orderly society with other people nagged at him. Plus, save for his dog and horse, he was alone, his family having been killed, so he missed other people. As such, Wyatt packed his belongings and headed East to St. Louis, trying to find society.
Wyatt was in for a shock when he arrived, as there was no work available for him in the city. The military had taken on the role of the police, and they had a more cynical, government-centric idea of law than Wyatt's love-the-people attitude. For these reasons, he was unable to find employment in law enforcement, and because he was old, he couldn't find employment anywhere else, either.
Destitute and desperate, Wyatt stumbled into a bar, where he met Mr. Grayson, the son of Wyatt's old partner from their deputy days. Wyatt and his friend's son talked about old times, and remember how Wyatt got his rifle from a friend who passed away? That was Mr. Grayson's father. When off duty, Wyatt and Mr. Grayson's father would go hunting, using Mr. Grayson's father(who I'll now call Gray Sr.)'s rifle. Before Wyatt became the Sheriff, he and Gray Sr. were involved in a shootout that claimed Gray Sr.'s life. Wyatt was saddened and would later dedicate his Sheriff inauguration speech to him. Gray Sr. wrote in his will that his best friend Wyatt would get his hunting rifle, and Gray Jr. was able to recognize his father's gun on Wyatt's back.
As Wyatt and Gray Jr. reminisced about their memories of Gray Sr, Wyatt revealed that he was homeless and looking for work. Gray Jr. decided to do a favor for an old friend and gave the older man a job; Gray Jr. had recently established a mining firm, and he needed a shipment of silver delivered to Boise or he would lose his government contract. Wyatt, with no other option, accepted, and he joined Gray's convoy as an escort.(Image)
VEHICLE TYPE: Horse
MODEL: Arabian
FUEL SOURCE: Hay
ROLE IN CONVOY: Transport for escort
MODIFICATIONS: Gelded
DESCRIPTION: His horse is a red-brown Arabian gelding that he is adept at riding. It is equipped with a quality saddle that has room to sport some equipment and gear, and some light cargo. Notable weapons equipped on his horse include a Winchester Model 1897 shotgun and a crowbar. It also wears horseshoes.
