The Good Days are Gone

The United States in 2090 is a nation whose divisions cannot be remedied, or, so they say. In response to years of deadlock in Congress and "do-nothing" presidents, Senator Elias Nickles from Illinois proposes a highly divisive plan. He calls for the states to agree to a constitutional convention: A place to discuss a series of amendments to the constitution to solve the various issues that plague the country. Senator Nickles sees widespread support from the states as all of them agree to participate. But debate quickly escalates into something else: The peaceful dissolution of the country. President Agberin, just two years into his term, now presides over the most tumultuous time in American history since the Civil War.

In the streets of Washington, D.C., a car flew through the air at 60 miles per hour.

This wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Washington DC was a busy place, a city of over a million people, where cars were always on the highway and traffic was plentiful. What mattered was the man inside the car. His name was Jonathan Lewis. Lewis, despite his ordinary sounding name, was the governor of Massachusetts. He drove on this very same car for about 5 hours now, and he finally came where he needed to be-the Capitol building. In this building, where laws were made, he and several hundred other people would decide the fate of America. He parked his car, went through the scanner, and went into the building. Thankfully, he didn't have to stand out in the January freeze very long.

When Lewis came into the building, he was disappointed. The halls of Congress were empty, the corridors void. The only other people seemed to be janitorial staff. Then, out of the corner of his eye, he saw diminutive looking man, slumped in a chair with an sad yet stern look on his face. This man, he recognized, was President Agberin. He sat next to the short brown haired man, without saying a word. He checked his phone quickly, it buzzing with a few notifications. The man didn't move. If Agberin wasn't breathing, Lewis' might've thought he was dead. After five minutes, Lewis put down his phone, and for the first time since he came into the building uttered a word. "You wa-"

"No." was the answer from the president. After a few seconds of awkward silence Agberin said"I need time to think. Now is not the moment for any distraction. The country is literally falling apart, Mr. Lewis. You are a smart person, you should know that. I'm not in the mood for coffee, or Cola, or watching snowflakes race anyway. I need peace, and quite." In those few sentences, Agberin didn't even once turn towards Jonathan. Lewis sighed, and checked his phone again. After ten minutes, he put it down. It was still freezing. He needed coffee, and hot, warm coffee at that. As he went up to go to the cafeteria, the chair he sat on creaked. And as he turned around, he saw Agberin's eye twitch.

Angela's limo comes to a stop outside the US Capitol building in Washington DC. She opens the door and steps out into the cold winter air wearing a business suit, a red heavy winter coat and a tobaggan on her head. Angela looks at the city she working for the past 2 years in amazement. She shakes her head before she and her 4 security guards started walking up the stair of Capitol Hill.

Angela steps inside the building and feels the warm air hit her so takes off her coat and hands it to one of her guards. As she walks towards the Senate chambers, she notices the President of the United States just sitting there looking sad. Angela was standing there thinking,What he President doing here looking all sad? The Senator from Alabama walks over to the President with a puzzled look on her face, "Mr. President, what are doing here and why the troubled look on your face?"

John Kolkjen walked briskly up the Capital steps, holding a briefcase in one hand and a coffee in the other. The Minnesotan Senator was enjoying the much more temperate weather of Washington DC, and was in such a good mood he showed up to the Capital earlier than usual. His security guards shadowed him at a respectful distance as he walked, just in case his mood changed. Kolkjen was always respectful to his staff, no matter the mood, but he was also a vicious debater on subjects he's passionate about, and has been known to occasionally destroy an opponent with his sharp tongue.

As he entered the iconic building, and further into the chamber, he was met with mild confusion. Only a couple people were present in the chamber, including a fellow senator, a governor, and President Agberin himself. Not wanting to disturb his colleagues, he nodded at them as he passed, sitting down and taking another sip of his coffee. His introverted mind could only take so much interaction in the mornings, even on a pleasant morning like this.

He noted Senator Simmons talking with the president, who sat there looking sad. John felt a pang of sympathy for the man. He was given an awful hand as President, a demonized leader of a nation in crisis. He hadn't had much interaction with the Alabama Senator, and was interested in getting to know more of her policies and beliefs. After all, what was the old proverb? "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer"? Well, Senator Kolkjen was a formidable political strategist, and he hoped his enemies, and history, would recognize him as such.

Senator Elias Nickles arrived in DC after his plane touched down in Ronald Reagan National Airport. As soon as he was situated, the senator was greeted by his taxi driver. Elias smiled at the driver and climbed into the backseat. "Capitol Hill, please."

The upcoming drive, which shouldn't take any more than 10 minutes, will finally allow the Senator some brief rest. Elias met with the Illinois Governor, countless public officials, and civilians who all wanted to pitch in their own ideas for this convention. "And it's not even likely we'll come out of this alive...." he muttered to himself.

The taxi neared Capitol Hill and halted. Elias paid the driver and began to walk up the steps of the nation's legislature. He took in a deep breath and entered the building. He gave a respectful nod to everyone and took a seat by himself. Elias sighed softly and tried to relax while he strained to hear what Senator Simmons had to ask the president.

Lewis' "coffee break" turned out to be longer than expected. He got his coffee, then played pong with another worker, then went to a restaurant, and finally got himself a margarita. As he entered the area where the Senate was supposed to meet, he nearly spat out his drink. There were about 500 other people when he showed up. It seemed everyone decided to come in those 3 hours. He quickly finished his drink, went to the bar to put it back, and finally arrived ready. He noticed the president was looking through his reports, though instead of one's Lewis found boring like the number of coronavirus cases or snowfall per meter, they detailed reports from the most secessionist states-Louisiana Texas, California, and so on. He sat back on his chair, and slowly indulged himself in the chatter going on around him

Washington DC
Freestate Hall
January 1nd, 2090

In his Room, Alexander Sillsman put on his best suit and tie, looked himself in the mirror, fixed what needed to be such, and headed out the Door.
Today, however, he would not be meeting in the Freestate Hall, he would meet in the lobby with the Senate. This was a special occasion. He knocked on the door of his his Right-Hand, Nathan Jaye, who opened the door and finished up dabbing his face with a napkin from the coffee. Of course, Jaye would drink more coffee during the meeting to show a good impression, a trait in which Alexander though strange, but accepted it nonetheless.

The two walked down the hallways together, passing the Republican Halls on the way. The three men joking with each other, although official Government Members, glared at the two walking down, then scoffed at them and continued laughing. Of course, being the Rival Party, they despise the Freestate, even though the Republicans had a clear advantage and even the President was Republican. But if all went to plan, that would soon end in the election coming up.

They walked down the stairs, into the lobby, and waited for around 5 minutes until the Representative, Harold Scott, came in. They greeted each other, made their way to the door, and walked out. They walked to the Capitol building, dodging Multiple cars, most of them Limos and Convertibles. They walked up the Building steps, surrounded by many Senate Members greeting and hugging each other. Soe scoffed at the three men, othe's ignored them. Of course, most were Republicans.

But they didn't care. They had the majority in the Texas, Georgia, Florida, and Arkansas. All they needed was that pesky Carolinas, which were Green Party ever since they helped out the Duo of states in 2068 after Hurricane Jane and the Iran Missile Raids. It was all they needed, and they were the base of the Green Party. But that was what this meeting was for, scouting the Green Party.

They made their way into the lobby and into the Senate Building. There was a little more people than expected, but that didn't matter as much. They sat down at their seats, Scotts taking notes while Jaye handed his to Sillsman. They looked at the room, which mostly included Senators from the East Coast, and not the Mountain or Pacific States. A small disadvantage, but they would do fine. They had the issues planned out and the questions, including Covid-73, the Israeli Revolt, and Wales.

Raleigh, North Carolina

Governor Woods was a popular man in Raleigh and throughout both Carolinas, as was his South Carolina counterpart. For other two decades, the Green Party has found dominance in the two states, with all four Senators belonging to the party, as well as both Governors and a majority of both state's legislatures. Woods was happy with his position and was happy to work for the people of his state, which he believed to be one of the best states in the whole country.

At the same time, there were parts of the state that were still Democrat or Republican strongholds. Greensboro was still a major Democrat stronghold while much of the farmland of the eastern half of the state was still in the hands of the Republican party.

He looks out the window of his office and sees the streets below, trees lining both sides and every road a garden of its own. The cities looked beautiful with their many shades of green among the buildings. No longer just concrete as far as the eye can see. This was what every city in both Carolinas now looked like, and Woods was proud of his work. He looked down into the plaza at the small group of people protesting in front of the building.

He frowned at the sight of them, there had been an old abandoned warehouse in north Raleigh and the city planned to demolish it and build a park. Woods, naturally, supported the decision. Though the city also received an offer from a local businessman to buy the warehouse and bring a few hundred jobs into the local economy. The city council voted unanimously to reject his offer and continue with the demolition of the building. These protesters were gathered outside the state capital building and city hall to protest the impending destruction of the warehouse. He wasn't worried, as most people supported the construction of the public park.

He returned to his desk, pondering what the upcoming days and weeks would bring, things in other parts of the country are seemingly getting worse, and he fears that soon those things may bring turmoil to North Carolina and her southern twin.

Richmond, Virginia
Governors Office
ABC News with Aina Wilson

"Thank you for agreeing to meet with me on such short notice Governor Ferrar, but this topic for an interview...isn't just the least bit controversial". The governor smiled, and said "No....Secession is the way of the future, and I won't back down from such talk despite what the establishment might deem it. America died in 2073 when the federal government let millions die, and simply said to the beleaguered masses 'no we wont help'. The president hid in Raven Rock that year as people choked on their own vomit, and if they were lucky the virus had already made them unconscious. The tricentennial celebrations in 2076 were muted here in Virginia given that we lost so many people, and why should we have celebrated a farce?".

Mrs. Aina refocused herself "Secession was tried once before as you know, and it didn't turn out so well. So what makes you think that it will work out this time?". The governor sighed "the tired argument of the confederacy is an old one, but it simply wont work this time. The people elected me not just an independent, but someone with noted secessionist views. The people are tired of this whole affair, and simply want it to end. The United States has been lingering on, and its time the sick man of america lingered on no more. Its time the country rest, and new countries formed from the states take their place...just as the empires of old died this one in time will, and perhaps sooner than later".

Mrs. Aina continued on "You aren't arguing for a violent withdrawal are you governor?". Randolph shook his head "The government committed enough violence towards us as it is, no need to respond in kind. If anything the states will leave when the time is right, but this will not be some chaotic leave. There will be matters of diplomacy, currency, foreign policy, and so much more to discuss. These are interesting times Mrs. Wilson, and lets hope the dream of something better arrives soon".

The two shook hands, and Mrs. Wilson thanked the governor as he shook hands with her. The interview with ABC was more to stir the pot than anything else, but unlike some populists who bandwagoned on secession the governor actually believed it. In 2076 he had gained his rise in Virginian politics denouncing the tricentennial celebrations as a farce given the plague just three years earlier. He even on his first year as governor ordered the U.S flag removed triggering a protracted if futile legal battle for his opposition. It was even joked that with the right environment the governor would voluntarily renounce U.S citizenship in exchange for Virginian if such an event was possible.

Lewis sat in his room, late at night with only his small entourage of bodyguards as company. The convention was only starting so far, so he checked into a hotel to stay. After all, these things usually last days. He switched on ABC news. He saw Governor Ferrar, who led Virginia. Lewis considered the man braver than himself, at least politically. He ran as an independent, and won. Lewis did consider running as an independent, but choose the democrats because they would be the most accepting of what he had to say, and would get him elected. If it was 60 years ago, it'd be republicans. But then again, there was no Jonathan Lewis 70 years ago. Not officially, at least.

"...Secession is the way to the future, and I won't back down from such talk despite what the establishment might deem." Lewis shot back to the present. Did he hear secession? Ferrar was a secessionist, but that didn't make Lewis think he'd try. Then he talked about The Virus. Lewis, thankfully, didn't live to see the epidemic, if only he was stuck fighting a war against the Visegrad's and their Eurasian allies for the European Federation. He did believe what Ferrar said was true about the epidemic, but that was long ago. The massive clout was over, and now, sixteen years after most cases cleared up, he was talking about secession? As the story continued, Ferrar said he believed in peaceful means of seceding. Which meant that, hopefully, Lewis would see him at the conference.

As the story ended, Jonathan checked the time. It was 11:38 PM. He put on his nightgown, went to bed, and by midnight, was asleep.

Adrian Levislay was a bombastic and eccentric man. He was not afraid of announcing whatever it was that was on his mind. For years, he had pushed for the independence of New York, and when Illinois Senator Elias Nickles proposed a convention, he knew exactly what would occur. Today, Adrian Levislay would make the full intentions of New York and her people known.

The ride on the NYC to D.C Bullet Train lasted only 30 minutes. During that time, Levislay wasn't nervous in the slightest. In fact, the senator was busy looking at new cat videos on PetTube to pass the time. Today, January 20, 2090, would be another day that would live in infamy.

As soon as Levislay entered the nation's capital, reporters were all over him. Shouting over each other, they asked what the convention would look like for those involved. With a smirk, he replied, "The feds will learn that we are a nation of the people. The federal government derives its power from the states and its citizens. If nothing else happens, I'd like to say that we will make that fact clear, at least."

Levislay endured several more minutes of questioning before he was finally able to get through the crowd and walk into the Capitol Building. He wore a typical business suit and walked with confidence. The man wore sunglasses in winter, and didn't take them off. Levislay spread his arms in an exaggerated manner. And In a loud, booming voice, he asked, "Are we ready to begin?"

Everyone looked at him with disgust, a common trait by now.

"Of course we are ready. I am Republican Senator Angela Simmons and I represent the great state of Alabama. Lets get this farce of a convention going.

"Of course we are ready. I am Republican Senator Angela Simmons and I represent the great state of Alabama. Lets get this farce of a convention going. All of you that want your states to leave this great country are nothing but traitors. I will not see this nation get torn apart and if a civil war happens, Alabama will stand with the United States Government. We all swore an oath to Protect the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. If you support succession then leave this convention and don't come back as we have no use for traitors." Senator Simmons sat back in her seat.

The governor let out a hearty laugh mocking the senator as the room turned to him. There had been rumors the madman of Virginia might come into what he considered enemy territory, but they had just been rumors until today. " Treason is only for the lost to determine. What the United States government did to those of us sixteen years ago able to remember it well know of treason. I lost half of my family, and watched them buried in a mass grave to that bitter plague. I am here for them, and all the others in Virginia silenced before their time. Secession is the only answer my friends, and unlike our compatriots of the former peoples republic of China violence isn't sought here, but peace...to leave". The governor had sat down with others from amongst the Virginia delegation awaiting a response from the unionists to counter his argument, but perhaps the room might be changed.

Sillsman was angered at this start. Already, him and other partied were being called out for being traitors. Jaye whispered in his ear,

"Go ahead. She won't fight back. We did the same thing with the Brits."

Sillsman piped up and replied over the Microphone,

"Freestate Party Leader, Alexander Sillsman here."

Glares and gasps were exchanged in the audience as Jaye smirked.

"Mind you, Senator, the Prime Minister of Britain 320 Years ago, Fredrick North, said the same thing in London before the King as News about the Great George Washington arrived. We were what you call "Traitors" back the. But we were merely fighting a regime. And we were rebels. Rebels that won our independence and are now know as not "Traitors", but "Powerful." Also careful to not, the very State you were born in and governed for, said the same thing in 1860 under Jefferson Davis. And both of us know that they weren't traitors. Just Rebels. I propose that we start this conference under REAL terms. And as of right now, those terms are Succession itself, not talking about how bad it is to allow such. My proposal: To hold back further succession, appease the Secessionists and the Freestates by giving them more rights. That will give you more time. As for the Right we want, we need more Medical Care for the Red Plague and the Mexican Worker's Terrorist attacks on Texas and Louisiana."

The governor had sat down with others from amongst the Virginia delegation awaiting a response from the unionists to counter his argument, but perhaps the room might be changed.

Lewis, who arrived a few hours ago, turned around to the governor and senator. "With all due respect, Governor Ferrar, I will have to agree with Simmons, if partially for the wrong reasons. Speaking from a purely logical standpoint, the economy of Virginia would likely not be able to handle the secession. America is one of the main producers of oil nowadays. If Virginia leaves, it's agricultural base would not be able to immediately hold up it's GDP. And if oil is bought from the Eurasian Federation or Arab Federal Republic, there might be a rise in hawkish movements within the republicans, threatening to invade Virginia for siding with our enemies. Regarding the unfortunate circumstances of your family, that was 16 years ago. We have a different president, we found a vaccine, and the plague bothers us even less than the flu. We have to remember the good things of the past and learn of the bad ones. I do believe, however, that if the people are informed enough, they should decide on if Virginia leaves the US. Which brings me to my first proposal for an Amendment to the great constitution our founding fathers build: the right of the people of a state to choose if their state will secede or not. We will discuss about state autonomy rather than secession later."

Sillsman was angered at this start. Already, him and other partied were being called out for being traitors. Jaye whispered in his ear,

He turned to Sillsman, siting in the back rows. "The plagues been handled already. If comes back badly enough, we'll put stay at home orders until death rates start dropping. I do, however, agree about the Mexican Worker's Terrorists."

You say that the plague 16 years ago was the US government's fault when it wasn't. I lost two of my little brothers and several cousins to that plague and yet I hold no grudge against this government whatsoever. People like you don't deserve to be in government of any kind. Any succession movement will just lead to a repeat of the civil war we had 229 years ago. I will see all who support succession executed if you try to rip your states from this Union. Remember what Abraham Lincoln once said: United we stand, divided we fall. USA USA USA USA USA!!!!" You can hear many of her fellow Republicans chanting along with her.

Jonathan stood up, shaking. "M-maybe we s-should allow there to be a vote of no confidence against the president." At that pint, Agberin, who seemed to just let the chaos unfold, got up startled.

Once the chanting died down, The governor retorted "I care not what an Alabamian has to say on my status as governor of Virginia. Only Virginians have any say on my position, fortunately, and quite frankly it was the government's fault. Whose decision was it to abandon the people of the southeast? The president of the United States hid in a bunker as people died in the streets, and its any wonder the man died of a heart attack when he did. As for your threats, you would be condemning thousands to die all for the sake of a farce which died in the 2040s...the sick man of the North American continent has passed its prime".

The governor sat down again, but not before addressing the economic concerns of Mr. Lewis "Economies are such a fickle thing as the past decades have demonstrated, but I concede you have a point. Yet I don't intend to leave my countrymen (referring to Virginians) to the wolves. We would remain neutral in the affairs of loyalist states...the people want peace. I won't sentence people to die in some horrid front fighting Ohioan loyalists...there has been enough death. On that matter of economics, I wonder what might happen with the U.S dollar?".

"Just an amendment that allows it, if enough state legislatures approve it. Agberin isn't the most popular person and neither was President Johanson for his handling of the Plague and COVID-73, but none were removed, at least, not naturally. It should be an option."

Jaye stood up again.

"I decline and agree with the Governor and Senator over this mad proposal. This is the President's First year and your already suggesting a proposal like this? Who agrees with me!"

At this point, Jaye was ushered into his sea by Sillsman, Scotts, and the Democratic Senator of Maine behind him. However, a wave of "Agreed." went through the Senate. It was mostly Republicans and smaller parties, but some Democratic also agreed. Jaye fury-looked at Lewis.
