Since someone mentioned a 2073 pandemic I can imagine it just being even worse, and the federal government had to take certain actions that were necessary albeit unethical. Suffice to say my guy doesn't like the U.S since in his words "the government left us to die, so why care?".

Viruses are funny things that tend to make leaps, and bounds. I'd imagine during say a bad decade things just got bad, and exploded. I also figured it be fitting to have something really strike the nerve, and originate as a motivation for people. The tricentennial as a result wasn't as celebrated as it should have been due to that.

The ineffectual federal government response led to the states enacting draconian shutdowns and quarantines. During the plague and in its aftermath, an economic depression hit the country, but many states have begun to recover by 2090 and are now thriving in the post-plague world.

You can join at any point, really. Luckily, you only missed the first day of the convention. We basically discussed the merits of dissolving the US and whether an amendment for greater state autonomy would be better. If you want a major role, the governors/senators of Texas and Florida are still open
