United Kingdom Politics Game

Image

Welcome to the United Kingdom Politics Game, a laid back mechanics RPG where you take the role of a party leader in the United Kingdom. Your goal is to lead your party to victory in election after election. This means campaigning, as well as governing, effectively in order to win the people's votes.

The game's version of the UK government has a simplified structure. Across the 12 regions, there are 650 parliamentary seats in the House of Commons. You make campaign promises and allocate campaign resources across the 12 regions in an effort to win the 326 seats needed to form a government and become Prime Minister. You may need to coalition with other parties, but not always — because of the electoral system, the winner of each region wins half of its seats, and the rest are allocated proportionally based on how many votes each party gets in the region.

Once you've won, you'll need to make good on your campaign promises to stay in government at the next election. Each party can propose laws to adjust the nation's 18 policy portfolios. In addition, the government must pass a budget funding each portfolio and taxing each region. Proposals have to pass the House of Commons to become law (though random events might stall legislation, like a lengthy debate in the House of Lords).

This is the game's sole thread. There is no long-form narrative storytelling: most of the narrative will be told through news, posted by the OP. You may post some character RPing if you wish.

Nation Name: Greater Arab State
Party Name: Traditionalist Conservative Party
Party Description: A right-wing split from the former Conservative Party, the Traditionalist Conservative Party was formed by the elements of the Conservatives that had once formed the Cornerstone group as well as elements of the Conservative Monday Club. Furthermore, the Party has thus far focused much of its campaigning amongst the Midlands region of the United Kingdom, as well as the Anglia region, emphasising its relative economic moderatism with its support for the institution of the monarchy as well as favouring the reintroduction of elements of traditional society (full repeal of the House of Lords Act 1999 etc.)

Nation Name: Zedeshia
Party Name: United Leftist League
Party Description: Originally created by various socialist, communist, anarchist and other far left groups spread across the United Kingdom as a means to fight against suppression from the British government during the Cold War, the United Leftist League has gained popularity among many after the fall of the Soviet Union. Among it's members are followers of radical far-left ideologies, most prominently today being Anarchists, Socialists, and Syndicalists. The ULL has thus developed itself as a party of libertarian socialism, wishing to increase the power of local governments and organizations and bringing an end of the capitalist system in the United Kingdom. The party is known for both it's economic and political activities, as throughout it's history it has helped organize trade unions, strikes, and more. In recent years, after the election of Eric Maclean, a distant relative of the famous Scottish Socialist John Maclean, the ULL has primarily campaigned in Scotland and Northern England.

Might do either a left-wing populist party of some sort, or maybe go for a Five Star Movement centrist populism.

Party Application
Nation Name: Emazia
Party Name: Action, Resistance, Solidarity! (A.R.S)
Party Description: One of the new creations of a new left wave, being in a similar vein to parties such as Die Grune, LFI, SYRIZA and Podemos, the party was formed in 2013 as the Union Against Austerity Party, protesting the recent cuts to public services. The party had an aggressive platform on issues such as public spending, taxes on the wealthy, along with demanding an EU referendum, nationalisation of essential services and other economically left-wing stances. This allowed it to win a respectable 25 MPs, through staining Milliband and the Labour Party as neoliberal and taking a large chunk of the left-wing vote. In 2017, during Corbyn's tenure as Labour leader, it formed a united front with Labour, forming a function similar to the Co-Operative Party during that election. After the decision by the Labour Party to pick a second referendum, which ARS MPs opposed as an attack on the will of the people, causing the party to be split between those who remained in Labour (keeping the old "Union Against Austerity Group" label), and the new wing, formed mostly of former UAAP MPs in the North and in Wales. Corbyn's unpopularity was weaponised by the ARS and their leader, Grigor Palin, running as a "clean" alternative to the tarnished Labour leader. Of course, as to not anger their base, Palin mostly focused on courting Northern voters with his Brexit policy, running as a "Lexiteer Party", which worked to great effect, grabbing a decent amount of former Labour North and Welsh seats, along with eliminating most UAAG MPs.

Nation Name: Vdara
Party Name: Party of Scotland (Pàirtidh na h-Alba)
Party Description: A party campaigning for the independence of Scotland. Following a long period of being a fringe party from the 70s-00s, the Party of Scotland rose to prominence following the 2014 Independence Referendum. Since then, the party has regularly won plenty of seats in Scotland - with Mhairi White becoming the Party of Scotland’s Westminster leader in 2022. In keeping with tradition, the true leader of the Party of Scotland sits in the Scottish Parliament, with the current Holyrood Leader being Nicky Stallone. The PS is slightly left leaning, and supports policies such as increasing the amount of housing available across Scotland, as well as building newer and better hospitals and schools - while also stating that these types of things would be done on a larger scale if their main aim of an independent Scotland is successful.

Takes forever to make news posts. With that in mind, I'll just make logos for each party, and post them tomorrow, and then I'll plug the numbers into the election calculator.

If anybody hasn't yet posted a campaign form, now is the time to do it.

Before a cheering crowd of party members and supporters, Chairman Eric Maclean made a short announcement of the ULL's plans on taking part in parliamentary elections. Though most of his speech appeared to be ordinary for one of his standing he had this to say to close his statement:

"...for everyday the countless evils of the modern world continue to afflict the people, whether knowingly or unknowingly. As every moment passes a innocent man suffers and then dies, with every blink of an eye a voice cries out into nothingness, with every heartbeat another worker sighs, beaten and downtrodden. The workers of Britain, and the world, stand miserable, constantly marginalized and dehumanized by the oppressive system we call capitalism. The rich and powerful lie above us all, their wealth so incomprehensibly great that it is beyond description! Yet the average individual of this country is at constant threat, the few rights they hold always at risk from privatization and austerity measures. Well, no more! We shall bring change, no matter the cost! Workers of the world, unite!"

What happens when one combines the Baltic States, interstellar technology, vast amounts of wealth, and moderate Social Democratic policies?
Well besides an absolute mess, Zedeshia!
