The Saint Namur Archaeological Trust has discovered a continuously inhabited site in a rift valley on the edge of the Salhuura desert believed to be several thousand years old.
Director of the Saint Namur Archaeological Trust, Garram Salis, said "This new discovery is particularly important as it proves, beyond a shadow of doubt, that this region of the desert was actually inhabited by prehistoric man for far, far longer than previously believed."
The site lies east the Dudakhan Flats, and the shallow cave of the Middle Stone Age site is clearly one of the eldest found in the region to date. The site was first discovered in 2005 and contains an arrangement of eating utensils, flint tools and animal remains. However, the site’s true extent was difficult to interpret until the Saint Namur Archaeological Trust used state of the art photogrammetry techniques to record the remains. The first task was to create a 3D digital model of the landscape so it could be experienced by non-archaeologists. It was then excavated by the Archaeological Trust during the summer and has revealed a cohesive habitat on the edge of the rift valley, likely to have seen continuous habitation for several generations.
Garram continued: "The site contains a wealth of evidence for technological skills that were not thought to have been developed for a further couple of thousand years, such as advanced horticulture. This site shows the value of Neolithic archaeology for understanding the development of civilisation.
The Saint Namur Archaeological Trust is working with the National Archaeology Centre (NAC) to record and study, reconstruct and display the artifacts recovered from the site; many of which are currently being stored in the Greater Desert Dore Research Facility (GDDRF) for further study. Dr Suzamma Macelson, the curator at GDDRF, said "It has been really exciting for us to assist the Trust's work with such unique and historically important artifacts. This is a great example of how our repository is able to support the delivery of a wide range of science related to the wider desert biome." While touring the dig site on the edge of the rift valley, Corto Tiuc, the history broadcaster and host of History Now, one of the world's biggest history podcasts, commented that he was both awestruck by the variety of remains and shocked by the apparent rate of erosion.
The artifacts from the site itself, coupled with advanced horticulture skills and finely crafted tools suggests a Neolithic (New Stone Age) influence. Research in 2019 was funded by the Scorpion Trust, the Butlam Research Group, the Edam Feort Foundation and the Saint Namur Archaeology Trust. Work was conducted with the help of volunteers and many individuals who gave their time and often money, to ensure the material was recovered successfully.
