The River Folk, at the Mouth of the Riverlands

As Katrina shaped a strange paste over the stacked stone chunks before her, Harris watched over the horizon, shiny new spear in hand.
"It's a start, but it's not enough. I will not rest until my sons and daughters can live without fear." Every now and again his gaze flicked to a different point in the distance, though there was nothing at all to see.
Katrina looked up at him wryly, hands wet with unset mortar.
"Well we can't keep casting sunstone until this damned furnace is together. So stack some more stones, would you?"
Harris meekly turned back to the furnace in response, stacking stone shards on the opposite side.

Seasons come, seasons go...

Through the lands of the Machaka great herds of elk pass, a bounty of meat on the hoof. Hunting will be particularly fine this year, with even the tiniest modicum of skill.

Warclyfe: There is ample to eat. The boat is now almost ready to be launched, but for the last vestiges of the sail needing to be sewn together.

A matter of rites and careful engraving, of hot copper and crackling lightning. Reinforcements and carefully cut shapes hold the lightning within the shrine, at least theoretically, which will aid the matters the Warclyfe desire.

The Deepkin: There is a great surfeit of food in Kharbarinth. The einkorn planting is expanding, and is now a formidable field. Perhaps new growing techniques are now called for. The chestnuts are also flourishing beneath their warding stones, as is the barley and the maize. Cynthia has borne a child, a girl, but her pregnancy is difficult, and she requires medical treatment to recover. Valerie also bears a girl, but her pregnancy is easy, perhaps on account of her febrile age.

Jarn's efforts to observe and catalog the barley have paid off, several years of study determining how the crops grow best alongside the other cereal plants enlightening Jarn as to how best to care for them.

At Stalheim the food stocks are merely ample. A good quantity of medicinal herbs from the new garden have been patiently gathered, and the blueberries have taken to the soil happily. The einkorn planting is expanding, as is the patch of Healer's Hand.

To the north of the northeast Laika wanders, out into plain beyond the forest. The coast is here, the air full of salt spray from the north, and wide plains unfold both east and west. Brilliant pale stones stud this coastline and shimmering prismatic cliffs, as does dun gray cassiterite, rather spoiling the effect. Wild boars roam here, a feast for the belly. There are no signs of men in this wide windswept land.

The Corvidians: There is ample food everywhere the Corvidians walk - the excess being devoured. Janon's attempts to capture more goats are unfortunately met with failure, the animals being swift and difficult to capture. Jana has fallen pregnant, and soon gives birth to a baby boy. Her labor is hard though, and leaves her desperately ill. Cara also bears a girl child. The warriors of the Corvidians will engage the Nanfeng alongside their allies. The wheat planting is expanding nicely.

The Aederfolk: There is just enough food this year in the main settlement, though the western village has ample supplies. Elatha spends the year gather sticks to feed the forge-fires. No children are born in either village, sadly. The fireberry planting has also withered into nothingness, despite the tribe's best efforts; a deep introspection of this particular crop might have kept it alive.

North of north Oengus ventures, into a land of wide plains. To both north and west the mountains reach for the heavens, and to the east grasslands march away. Gleaming native copper can be found here, and familiar immense crustaceans the size of hills stomp hither and thither. Orange birds at least as large as men flash and glint in the sun, soaring to great heights before flashing with sudden flames.

The Khortuun: There is slightly more than enough food this year. A fine quantity of obsidian has been retrieved, though Ykka has turned her attention to gathering timbers, given their supply of obsidian is exhausted. The secondary cave has nearly been secured, only a small amount of building remaining to be done. The brown mushroom planting is expanding,

The Manisaharu: The tribe eats well - their gift of yak-flesh has convinced one of the outlanders, a man named Amidan, to stay with them. He says he is a worker, with thirty and one winters to his name, and he is tired of wandering. The rest of the tribe moves on westward before snow closes the passes in that direction. Keta's condition is improving, and she is soon hale once more. No children bless the People of the Heavens.

The Machaka: There is plentiful food with the passage of the elk. The scholars of the Machaka are turning their attention to methods of killing a man from a distance, in case the raiders return. The rest of the village is occupied gathering flint and timber for more weapons.

Huanca: There is plentiful food for all. A nice new hut has been added to the village. The Huang seem to have finally grasped the dynamics of growing potatoes, and thus the scholars of the Huanca return.

Back and forth the needle moves, between lengths of carefully spun thread. Over and under the woven material binds itself together, until it is a thick cloth capable of holding back heat and cold. This clothing is time consuming to produce, but extremely warm and comfortable compared to bare furs. The fundamentals of bowmaking have also come to their hands this year, a great boon, a leap forward for the dwellers upon the slopes.

The Huang: There is ample food for all this year. The Huanca appear to have grasped the niceties of horticulture, and thus Tang returns to his kindred. Several medicinal herbs have been gathered. Fortunately, even without the herbs, Xiang is recovering. The jadegrass is growing nicely. No children are born this year.

The seven warriors of the Corvidians and the Huang head south, to assault the Nanfeng. The assault is foiled, however, because the cave the Huang say is the home of the wild men is empty. There are signs that fires might have been set here at some point, but no men now remain... perhaps the reason the Huang have not been attacked in many years.

The Riverlanders: There is more than enough food for all. The knowledge of the Pennenthelli they have successfully duplicated, a clever thing, to throw small spears with taut sinews and bent timber. A fine small stone furnace has been raised, ready for smelting. The tomato planting is expanding. Black days, however, seem to hover close to the tribe. Prudence has perished in childbirth, giving the world a new son before her lifeblood was exhausted.

The Pennenthelli: There is ample food. The knowledge of how to grow plants is one strange to the Pennenthelli, but the Riverlanders are willing enough to teach them. A keen self bow - two actually, have been graven. No children, unfortunately, bless the tribe.

To the distant south and east, Jenwin wanders. A wide forest covers the land here, and to both north and east the wide oceans spread. Southward plains open. Malachite can be found here, as can kaolinite. Immense oaks, heavy and red-leafed, compose much of the forest population.

The Nirari Band: The band eats well enough. A fine quantity of wood has been gathered, a matter that is added to as Tyris prepares to craft a bow. Anku has a fine baby boy this year.

Far in the northwest, Lilitu scouts the land. Mighty mountains rise to both south and west of these rolling plains, while the grasslands continue north. Sweet onions can be dug up here, but lithe forms with tan shapes slink through the long grass. Fragrant trees with strange bark, tasty to the tongue, bloom in these foothills.

The Saladonian Nomads: The band eats well enough. A hide cloak has been prepared for a new member of the company. No children are born this year, but two new foals are dropped by the herd.

Southwest of the encampment, high mountains rise toward the heavens. Plains fall away to the west, and the range continues southward. Fine seedgrass grows here, a good addition to what is hunted. Tall trees with sweet green fruits grow on these slopes, and blue-black stone studs the heights.

West of the encampment, Anatoly walks across wide plains. Western plains extend, and also to the north. Deep green alfalfa grows on the foothills, familiar to the Saladonians, as does seedgrass. Pigs roam here, good food for hunters.

The Hesukar Band: Well, that would be telling.

The Varruk: The hunting is good this year, though Varruk's illness slows the hunters. Fortunately his body is strong enough to shake off the sickness with plenty of food. Salaya has manages to gather several stones she thinks will be good for making spears, once polished and smoothed. Omya bears a healthy baby girl during the depths of winter.

And so, surprisingly, the sun sets on a year with no red sun. Another year, however, already sweeps upward, poignant with promise...

中国

It was a strange year. The Nanfang had left their little cave leaving behind nothing but discarded old bones, and burnt out firewood. It was odd because for all their faults the Huang considered the Nanfang to be warriors yet they had left without putting up a fight. Zhang Jian ,the chief and leader of Nanfang was described has a harsh and foolish man by Yan. Zhang Jian was a short yet stocky man, eyes the color of night hair has black has obsidian , he was covered in scars a testament to his harsh upbringing. The man was always eager to show his strength, especially since he was the shortest of the men, beating any man who challenged him to a bloody pulp. The Nanfeng valued strength and martial prowess above all else, the Huang where certain that they wanted to fight them the Huang sought to challenge them and yet they had scattered into the wind.

Indeed they had been gone for many years it seemed. Tao the leader of the Huang would thank the Corividians for sending their warriors and promised that the Huang would come to their aid if they needed it.

It was dishonorable that the Nanfang had left but what could be done? The Huang would gather their strength in any event.

Saladon Nomads
2nd Year on the South Western Plains
Another sunrise greets the Saladon Nomads. Peace was what the Nomads knew, for there was no threat known to them on the plain. The only threat was that of the rattlesnakes. Rattling death for those who drew near them. The nomads preferred to distance themselves from such beasts.

Varrus began looking forward heading west as soon as possible. He wanted to explore all that there was to be offered on the plains. Even if it meant that he would be moving farther away from the lands that he was born from. Hopefully they would find plenty of copper and other riches in the western plains. However, before he would make such a migration for the tribe, he wanted a second sledge to carry more of their gear. Regardless he was ready to travel once more out of the encampment to new lands. Heading more north than west this time. With spear in hand he said goodbye to his kin and left with Anatoly only to separate later on to cover more ground.

As for Chana, and the other girls, they focused their efforts on food collecting, and sledge crafting. Fara, however was devising a scheme with her wise brain of hers. Perhaps a way to make travel easier for her beloved...
Chana and Anatoly are bonding
No Step on Snek
Still looking for even more people to recruit.

Varrus (scout, M, hide cloak, copper spear, self bow): Exploring Northwest of new encampment spot.
Fara (scholar, F, hide cloak): Attempting to make horses ridable, so scouts can cover vaster areas of land.
Lana (worker, F, hide cloak): Gathering food
Anatoly (scout, M, copper spear): Exploring North of new encampment
Chana (worker, F, hide cloak, fired spear): Making second Sledge
Adney (child, F, hide cloak, fired spear): Making second Sledge
Matilda (child, F, hide cloak): Training to become a scholar
Edwin (child, F, hide cloak): Training to become a worker

Items: 8 Bones, 2 Native Copper, 2 Wood, 2 Fireclay
Animals: 10 horses,
Name: Ted

The Third Year of Varruk, The Thirty-Eighth Year of Wrath

Varruk would be riding back toward the camp, the young chieftain's body having conquered his malady, and his club having conquered a small deer slung behind him over the back of his horse. The brisk winter air flowing by him as he rides with some urgency. His urgency would abate as he got within sight of the camp. Varruk would dismount his horse before it stopped, walking to the two women near the still burning campfire dragging his haul behind him. As he makes it closer, he hears a new noise that would cause him to smile widely: a small mewling cry.

While Omya had since retired to the camp as their child grew into the winter months, she stubbornly continued to try and capture smaller animals closer to the camp. This method, while nowhere near as successful as her more active work, would still allow her to feel valid as her body prevented her from taking long treks stalking prey. This was important to her, and while she knew sating her desires with her companion carried such likelihood, she would not give up the role she had trained and experienced for her entire life. Labor was mercifully easy, and now she was relaxing with her baby in her arms. It was a further relief for Varruk to be returning. She would smile to him as he returns, reaching out to embrace him as he returns from the day’s hunting.

“Varomya is finally here!” she would proclaim happily to him as she holds her child to her breast. Of course, if the child was a girl, they would carry a mix of names, while a male child would carry a name of the father’s choosing, usually carrying their family name.

“I can see, she is beautiful.” He says with a smile, a more common sight as the hunting has since improved. He would release his embrace only after she was comfortable doing so. “Are you well?”

“I am more than fine, wounds will heal.” She says warmly, seating herself again next to Salaya, who was smiling as well. The more optimistic woman loving the cute little child, not wanting to interrupt her tribesmen.

“Will you want to hunt?” He asks, admittedly having missed her company since she had decided to stay by camp.

She would shake her head gently “I need to stay with her, I can take up making the new spears.” She would say “It took Salaya a year to find stone, though they are good.” She would turn to her friend and campmate “If life were not hard now, your pickiness would be a godsend.” She says.

Salaya would frown softly and say only lightly in protest “I was trying to still train the Var…” she would remain lounging, not wanting to engage with the two tired hunters in such a time.

“Very well, I will provide… for all of us” He says, brushing the wispy hairs of his new daughter.

Varruk (Male/28/Warrior)[Var(Horse), Club] hunts for the tribe, no longer taking the risks he was before
Omya (Female/22/Warrior)[Club] would use the gathered wood and rocks to create proper stone spears while watching over Varomya
Salaya (Female/20/Scholar) would try to train the Var (Horses) to better domesticate them for more proper riding
Varomya (Female/1/Child) would be a very cute little child.
Varruk and Omya have intimate relations and might have a child
Varruk and Salaya have intimate relations and might have a child

Manisaharu:
The People Who Walk in the Shadow of Heaven

Strange people with strange tongues bring new ideas and blood to replenish the tribe. High above the mountains, they sat around a fire, sharing stories of their ancestors. The people wanted to know: where did this newcomer come from? Who were his ancestors? What did he know?...

In the middle of the cave they sat, children on their laps, the blood of juicy flesh, and the grease of bone-marrow on their lips, as their new brother spun his tale...

"My people were born in a large, dark cave towards the lands of the setting sun. My great-great-great grandfather wore the skin of a Lion who stalked the mountains with his family, bearing with his mate three children. Yet he was ambitious, and selfish of a creature. He killed all the easy game, and gave it not to his fellow brethren, but kept it to his own. Whenever someone would ask for him to share his meal - he would claw at them, and tear their skin and paint their hair red with blood. Eventually, though he was a brother - the pack plotted to force him to leave. As he slept - they attacked him, pouncing on him, pushing them into the fire. There he burned his hands, and so painful was it that as he and his mate stumbled from their cave - he would never walk on his hands again. Thus he stood on two legs - and forever my people would stalk their prey - like our cousins the Lions and Leopards, but never on four-legs again. Thus, we fashioned spears and nets and blades for ourselves to help keep our weakened abilities safe and fed when we could not run down a deer, our savage teeth giving way to flat, grinding teeth - that we could not pierce hide with them anymore... Generation after generation we made children with travelers ... until we are here. We walk among men, but with the souls of predators in our chests."

Kara, (F) Scout - Scouts around for a larger cave to live in.
Grishti,(F) Scout - Hunts wild yaks (Flint Blade, Spearthrower, Spear.)
Asav, (M) Warrior - Guards their herd of Yaks from predators, milks the mother Yaks.
Kashish,(M) Warrior - Hunts wild yaks (Flint Blade, Spearthrower, Spear.)
Ida,(F) Scholar - Learns to better help breed the yaks - Animal husbandry.
Keta,(F) Scholar - Learns to better help breed the yaks - Animal husbandry.
Josha,(F) Worker - Hunts wild yaks.
Amidan,(M) Worker - Craft a flint spear
Ānava,(M) - Does what Children do.
Devayani,(F) - Does what Children do.
Jayanti,(F) - Does what babies do.
Bindumati, (F) - Does what babies do.

“Well then,” Harro drawled – eyes narrow as she scanned the horizon. From atop the modest dune, the old tracksman could scan the drifting dunes for untold leagues. Until they disappeared into the thin, dark line of the distant horizon. “I suppose this is it.”

Climbing up beside him, Ginnem – Harro’s younger by at least thirty seasons – stopped also, and ran his keen eyes across the sands as his old mentor did. “I suppose it is,” he ventured. And joined the older man in silence.

“You know…” Ginnem ventured, a smile hiding on the edge of his voice. “You could come with me.”

Harro drew a smile of his own at that; not with his mouth – but in the crow’s feet on the edges of his eyes. “What, and miss the harvest?”

“And Ykka’s squalling kids,” Ginnem reminded him. “And the stink of the camels. And matha’s cooking.”

“Ha-!” Alright – that last one drew an actual grin from the old man. But alas, his final answer was already on his wrinkled face before the words passed his lips. Ginnem knew it as surely as Harro himself did; even if it needed saying.

“Nah. This is your journey, boy. And besides – if I did go?” Ah, and there it was again. That smile. “We both know there wouldn’t be a bride left for you.”

“In your dreams, old man!” Ginnem laughed. And that, in the end, was how they parted. Harro clasped his forearm then – and Ginnem returned the favour. The younger man was leaving, and Harro watched him go – sand pooling around his feet as he ascended the slope. The home-cave and its valley had much to commend it; food and shelter, home and community. But a woman? One to love and laugh with and share a breath with? No. So Ginnem set forth then, to wander. And under foreign stars in foreign lands? Perhaps, just perhaps, seek a heart to match his own.

Harro watched him. Until he was gone.

The Sons of Corvus, Year 38

As the array of warriors depart from the cave, Corvan lets out a string of curses on these cowards.

"Unbelievable. A whole year's travel gone to waste. They must have known we would come to finish their miserable lives and fled. Miserable creatures!" he spits, anger coloring his eyes.

Corvin shakes his head at his son's impatience. He is quietly grateful that the Nanfeng have decided to leave and that no battle truly occured. Their promise to the Huang people has been repaid without the payment of blood that such a vow demands, and he praises the Great Spirit for this fortunate tiding.

"You have never seen the true price of bloodshed. When I was but a young boy, perhaps 14 years of age...before we left our old tribe to follow our father into the untamed wilderness, we were raiders. A life of warfare is not one to be envied, son. It is a blessing that we were able to escape the day without losing our lives to senseless violence." he replies, crossing his arms. Ceston nods, though he only has faint memories of those far years.

"Hmph." replies Corvan bitterly, still disappointed.

All in all, it is a good year. The adjustments made to labor allocation have paid off richly in the home settlement - there is more than enough food for all, and no bellies go hungry. Lopen and Lia's relationship has become somewhat strained, however - her womb seems to be barren. Five years of attempting to bear a child, and nothing in return. This frustration is further exacerbated by little Cana and Conan constantly running amuck in their small settlement, their loud voices filling the air.

Meanwhile, to the far South and West, Janon's attempts capture more goats are unfortunately met with failure, the animals being swift and difficult to capture. He curses these creatures and decides to return home, unwilling to waste any more time on this stupid errand. Not all is bad - the two eat quite well on the tasty plants which dot the landscape, and Cara has plenty of time to lounge about, relax, and...well, accept her husband's frequent advances. She quickly falls pregnant and gives birth to a healthy young daughter. Janon is pleased with this. After months of struggle, he decides that these "goats" are not worth the trouble - but the maize plants? Perhaps a welcome addition to their palate. The two gather as many seeds as possible and then head home, attempting to establish a planting.

It is not a pleasant reunion when Janon returns. Cavon, the interim Chieftain, is pleased with his new granddaughter, but ultimately unhappy about Janon's failure to bring any more of the goats home. In reply, Janon tosses his empty ropes upon the ground and then spits at Lopen! He proceeds to curse up a storm at his younger brother about the uselessness of the goats, and the two nearly come to blows. Their wives pull back at their arms, attempting to defuse the heated emotions, but it is not until Old Juna steps in between her quarreling boys that the situation is abetted. She pulls their ears and smacks them, chiding them about their flaring tempers. Thankfully, the two brothers are embarrassed by this, and do not continue their disagreement. However, Juna worries that perhaps this may grow into a greater feud.

However, not all is bad! Cavon and Juvon feel as if they are making good progress on the legendary stone Cavon has spent his life searching for, and the wheat planting has expanded without any conscious effort on the part of the Corvidians. There is enough food for all, and Cavon claims that he has had no ill dreams recently. Lia has an interesting idea about molding the sunsetstone - perhaps rather than laboriously hammering it out into the desired shape, they could simply pour the liquid metal into a mold. Cavon approves of this fascinating idea, and she takes the year off from the alloys. New children are filling the village, and despite their quarrels, the sons of Corvus live in relative prosperity.

In the far East, in the Huang Settlement, Jana has gotten pregnant and given birth to a healthy young boy. The circumstances of this birth are...questionable, considering that Corvan was gone for most of the year. Regardless, Corvan is not ultimately too concerned about these matters, as Jana's severe illness is significantly more pressing. The birth was difficult, with significant blood loss. Corvin and Ceston are ready to return home, but Corvan refuses to leave his ill wife behind or to make her attempt such a strenuous journey. He bids his father and uncle farewell, and the two set off into the distance without him.

Ceston (M, Scout, 50) (Equipped: Sling) heads home with Corvin. The two stop for the year at East of East, subsiding on the coconuts which dot this warm oasis.
Corvin (M, Warrior, 54) (Equipped: Sling) sets off home with his brother, hunting to provide for them along the way.

(Huang Settlement)
Corvan (M, Warrior, 34) (Equipped: Compound Bow, Two Wolves) stays with his ill wife, hunting with the Huang to bring his wife back to health. (Hunt Water Buffalo)
Jana (F, Worker, 29, Gravely Ill) stirs and shakes, battling off death itself. She is given Medicinal Herbs by the Huang people. (Rests, consumes Medicinal Herb)
Corhan (M, Infant, 1) coos and laughs - a healthy young boy, thankfully.

(Main Settlement)
Cavon (M, Spirit-Guide, 54) continues onwards with mixing the dun-gray and the sunsetstone. There have been some mixtures that seem to have merit, but mixtures of half dun-ore and half sunsetstone are too flimsy. (Research: Bronze)
Juvon (M, Spirit-Guide, 33) helps his father find the perfect ratio. (Research: Bronze)
Lia (F, Spirit-Guide, 22) chases her interesting idea about making new tools. (Research: Sandcasting)
Cora (F, Spirit-Guide Trainee, 13) takes time off this year to gather wheat instead.(Gather Wheat)
Juna (F, Worker, 55) (Equipped: Copper Work-Knife) gathers wheat from the plot. (Gather Wheat)
Lopen (M, Worker, 26) (Equipped: Copper Work-Knife) gathers wheat from the plot. (Gather Wheat)
Janon Stonebreaker (M, Worker, 30) (Equipped: Dappled Wolves) heads home, infuriated. He returns and goes on the hunt with a sharpened stake and the wolf pack, taking his anger out on unlucky gazelles. (Hunt Gazelles)
Cara (F, Worker, 26) gathers enough seeds of maize to establish a planting from S|S|W, and then attempts to seed one into the earth once they reach home. (Create Maize Planting)
Cana Stonebreaker (F, Child, 5) pulls grandmother Juna's hair and screeches like a boy. Good heavens.
Conan Stonebreaker (M, Child, 4) eats and sleeps, growing into a hearty little fellow.
Jane Stonebreaker (F, Infant, 1) coos and sings.

Cara and Janon attempt for a child.
Lopen and Lia attempt for a child.
Corvan and Jana attempt for a child IF she recovers fully by the end of the year.

In the main settlement, no food is stored. If there is any left over, Lia and Cara get extra food to increase their odds of childbirth. If there is any shortage, Janon and Lopen will eat less to allow the women and children to have enough.

Highlands
Iunan wakes up from a day of hunting and rubs his beard. His tribe the Mousinen on the Mantrean continent was one of the oldest to the point that his Great Grandfather was even apart of the great splitting in 74,000 BC when the landed on the Mantrean Continent and displaced the locals.
He begins by picking up his stone spear and lifting up the leather blanket covering the hole in his home. His little village the Iunanians (After his Grandfather) have been nomads travelling back and forth between their villages in the Highlands and the Lower Highlands. He stretches his back as he also picks up his bow and a quiver to go hunting and walks by the Scribe. "May I ask what your hunting today?" the Scribe asks. "No need Scribe, I and the rest of the town have been working on our writing." Iunan takes his time carefully writing down what he is hunting that day, Elk and white tailed deer, with the language of his ancestors. No one really knows when the first words were written but nevertheless, Iunan has taken the time to help teach the tribes children with help from the Scribe to teach them Mantrean from the Great Tribe that had split according to the legends so long ago. He strolls out of the village of 170 people and enters the Highland wilderness. His feet crunches underneath dead leaves as the cold autumn air bites his flesh like a spear through a hide. He notches an arrow on his bow as he sees his first target. A good looking elk of maybe 500 or more kg. He aims his bow and lets go of the arrow as his arrow sinks its tooth into the hide of the bull elk bringing it down. He smiles as the day seems like it cant get any better.

The River Folk, at the Mouth of the Riverlands

The tribe stood strong - there was little time to mourn the dead, in the face of the tribe's greatness to come. The Folk had learned from their friendly neighbors, a strange but benevolent crew - given time, they would be able to better defend the lands of the Great River and all they laid eyes upon. But until then... they would have to stand vigilant. Wary.
"Adelia. Come. The Hunt awaits."
Harris stalked off out onto the plains beyond the river, and the young woman Adelia followed. Left behind were the elders Magnus and Eliana who watched him depart, thinking and muttering to themselves. The Factions of the Folk were beginning to form at this point - and they were not so certain that it was a boon. The Scholars, for their part, were almost unopposed - each of the other groups understood that without their developments, without the myriad technologies they had discovered, none of them would be alive. The Warriors were the first to splinter from the pack - young Harris and Adelia, staunch in their commitment to defending the Folk, were unconvinced by the passive safety and security that had overtaken the tribe in past decades - they sought to ensure the peace in the centuries to come, even if blood had to be spilled. The Workers, on the other hand, scorned this militarism, dedicated to the calm expansion of the tribe's fields and borders. This friction would develop and grow, to be sure - but at least for the moment, the Workers had acquiesced to the passion of their counterparts - most held their tools at the ready, or at least nearby, when not in use, to ease the worries of the fearful. Perhaps their short blades were not quite so fearsome as a spear, but they were certainly better than a bare fist.
Such was the path of the Folk. Such was the way of the River's Blessing.

Seasons come, seasons go...

Nothing of great interest passes this year. At least, nothing any of the known tribes of the world mark. That is not to say, however, that the ground does not shift imperceptibly beneath their feet.

Warclyfe: There is enough to eat, and far more interesting beside, the raft is ready! It is a small craft, capable of bearing three men with ease and ample supplies, or more over a smaller distance. Difficult to steer and slow, it is still a major leap forward for those who seek to control the seas...

A system of symbols scratched into the bark of trees and bones of the child-birds, clever pictograms to indicate meaning - this the scholars of Warclyfe devise, so they might more easily share ideas both between one another and with the rest of the tribe.

The Deepkin: In Kharbarinth there is ample for all to eat. The warriors drill in both shade and sun, honing their bodies into weapons more formidable than those of mere thugs and bully-boys. A few new keen bronze spears have been cast and beaten to hard points, weapons without equal. No children are born to the tribe, an unhappy coincidence, and the einkorn field, though it expands some over the summer, shrinks back come winter. Perhaps better techniques are needed to nurture it. The squash has now grown into a field in truth, and the blueberries are also expanding.

Eastward in Stalheim, all is quiet, or at least content. There is plenty for all to consume, and a small trail is being cleared towards Kharbarinth. Additional poultices have also been prepared. Tanya bears two children this year, twin girls, but her pregnancy is hard, and despite consuming a decent portion of medicine, her body is still weak as spring returns. Lindin also gives birth, to a bouncing baby boy. The planting of the healer's hand is expanding.

There is rejoicing in the eastern settlement, for Mikhael has finally completed his first creation, that which marks him as a scholar in his own right. His new canoe, burnt from the heart of a great felled tree, is slow and laborious to navigate against the current, but moves downstream with great speed. It will carry much more than a single man can upon this trail of the waters, and so link Kharbarinth and her sister settlement with bonds of much virtue.

To the northeast of the known woods, a wide land of plains unfolds before the eyes of the Deepkin explorer. To both north and east sandy beaches can be found, a wide bay along the coast, and southward more plains roll into the distance. This land has no men, but semiprecious geodes can be found in the cliffs of the higher hills, and the blue-green leaves of the Healer's Hand grow in the dells. Heavy black stone, flowing down from the hills like a river, also marks this region.

The Corvidians: None go without across the sundered parties of the Corvidians, a blessing. The birth-sickness which oppresses Jana, treated with aid from the Huang, flees with remarkable, perhaps even supernatural, speed. She is hale by autumn, a great boon. The maize seeds which are brought up out of the south seem as if they will flourish for a time, but an early autumn freeze puts paid to the young shoot in a turn of misfortune. No children come of any of the unions of the tribe as well, a gray note in an otherwise fine year. Moreover, tended by the Corvidians and gathered from, the wheat planting seems now to be so vast that even when it sustains the tribe, there are plentiful healthy seeds and shoots to colonize new soil.

The Aederfolk: This year there is enough for all in both settlements, the Aederfolk turning their efforts to preparation for the future. Decent quantities of both timber and ore are stockpiled against future needs, and Creirwy bears a boy child. Moreover, the thickhide hut in the mountains has been completed and reinforced against any ill weather.

Khortuun: There is ample food for all. Ohan's work is complete, the high cave now secured against predators and guarded by a thin wall over her entrance. Moreover Ykka presents the tribe with two glinting black spears this year, as dark as the night sky when the moon hides her face, each an implement of sudden death in skilled hands. Ginnem journeys south, wandering with less purpose than before, but more vision. In hidden dells he searches, and the lees of dunes, for men or women who might have chosen to hide themselves at his hasty passage. There is much to commend this effort, but it unfortunately ultimately proves fruitless, at least here. Both the prickly pear and the rope-grass plantings are growing over the face of the canyon, and a baby camel has been born with much honking and bugling.

Manisaharu: Good is the hunt, and full the bellies of the people of the sky. Kara's efforts to find a new cave yield mixed results this year - none without inhabitants she spies, but she knows of many caves where dangerous beasts live, and in her frustration she informs the rest of the tribe of one of these. It is large, perhaps able to hold all of the band, but the smell of fetid death lingers near the entrance. To enter it without many warriors and weapons would be to court a position as prey, not predator. Amidan this year gathers fallen branches, selecting those which could hold a spear-point with ease and not break at a thrust. Unexpectedly Ida bears a baby boy this year, as red-skinned and hearty as any the tribe has seen.

It is a tricky thing, to understand the minds of beasts which are not men, even if the Manisaharu are in many ways their kindred. But careful observation of the seasons and habits of the yaks yields a few basic insights - to separate the beasts when they are not in a season for breeding, so they do not waste their attentions, and to bring male and female together when the season is right for their pursuits. Perhaps in this manner the People of the Heavens will add to their herds.

Machaka: With their enemies apparently driven off for now, the Machaka are prospering. The new weapons bring in an ample amount of meat from the surrounding forests, and they continue to manufacture weapons, to be secure in their own lands.

Huanca: There is ample food for all this year. Yauri has begun gathering wood to make the new bows the scholars have hypothesized. Two new alpaca have been tamed, and added to the growing herd.

Sandsong's work with the cotton plants has born fruit - not literally, as the plants are not good to eat, but figuratively. By coaxing them from the small places they have grown accustomed to living by experiment, and studying how they survive, where they grow and other factors, she feels confident she could now recommend sites for new plantings, and instruct the laborers in their care and keeping.

Far to the west, Alys walks the dry desert. In all directions the yellow sand stretches, along with a heat that makes her very bones ache. Great white things, as immobile as trees but without leaves, sprout from the ground here, along with skulls as large as her very self. The land is white at intervals, a brilliant blinding white like that of sweat-tracks on a forehead, but at least there are sweet-tasting brown mushrooms to eat here and there. More interesting, Alys finds tracks of men in the dust, where the wind has not erased them. Their origin is difficult to trace, but it is clear men have been here.

The Huang: There is enough food this year - indeed slightly more than enough. A new mud-daub hut is rising to house the people, and some medicinal herbs gathered to replace those gifted to the Corvidians. The protorice brought down from the mountains has a rough year, but seems to have survived, flourishing near the water of the Jade River come spring. Xiang's condition, unfortunately, is not improving. The wooden palisade is growing, but it is now apparent that to enclose the entirety of the large Huang village will be a formidable task for a single laborer. No children bless the tribe.

Lan's scouting to the northwest crosses a region of broad plains, bordered to north and west by mercilessly dry deserts. Enormous bones of some great beast litter the landscape here, as hard as rock, and blue-gray stone outcroppings form huge cliffs and rills across the landscape, a cacophony of broken stone and vanished giants.

The Riverlanders: Plentiful is the harvest of the Riverlands - but dark clouds gather over the peaceful people. Katrina has disappeared while gathering timber on the plains, and her axe is found near a stand of trees, near many confused footprints. Far more than Katrina herself could have made. They lead away westward. Both the tomato and maize plantings are growing.

The Pennenthelli: There is enough food for all this year. The scholars report a new mastery of the horticulture of the Riverfolk, and Hervath and Letozar have created two fine copper-tipped spears for hunting. Ellyn has also prepared a macabre suit of reinforced bones, good to at least fend away a blow or two of hostile men, and also bears a boy child, a blessing to the tribe. Venvild, unfortunately, suffers a miscarriage, which leaves her on death's door.

Jenwin's journey west reveals wide plains, with other wide rolling plains stretching in every direction she peers. Majestic pines make their homes on the hills here, and succulent red strawberries grow in their shade. Redder still are the rubies which can be found here and there in the soil.

The Nirari Band: The tribe has enough food for all. Tyris has produced the first new composite bow, a reclaiming of the knowledge of their ancestors. To the east is a region of immense plains, stretching to every horizon. Orange gourds grow here, good to eat, though the bees that buzz about them are formidable and dangerous, their bodies striped in fiery hues. Great animals with bodies many times the size of a horse roam this land, though they have only small amounts of fur, and long necks as thick as a man.

The Saladonian Nomads: There is not enough food this year. Fara and Chana have taken ill, their malnourished bodies susceptible to harsh winds. The second sledge has been completed, using up the tribe's supply of timber and bones.

North of the tribe's current position, a great confluence of rivers on mighty plains is to be found. Tall oaks nestle along the banks of this river, and shimmering stones with a green hue can be spied in the depths. Wading herons with long white feathers hunt fish in the shallows, a peaceful country. To all sides the plains unfold, with rivers running to this confluence from both south and east. There are no outlanders to be found here.

To the northwest, where Varrus roams, the river Anatoly has seen winds westward through unremarkable steppes. In every direction the plains unfold, nearly featureless. Plants with pale blue flowers grow here in great stands by the water, and emeralds are to be found in the swept-out cliffs of the watershed. Green schist makes up the bones of the hills in this country. There are signs here of men, but they are faint and confused, perhaps coming out of the north.

The Hesukar Band: A good time, a time of blood and worship and hot red meat. The spoils of the victorious are many. The Black Kings have revealed a secret to their chosen shedders of crimson drink, of how to heat the ores they have borne with them into weapons that will bite more keenly than flint and which are much easier to repair. The band celebrates and feasts, preparing their bodies for more warfare.

The Varruk: Ample is the food the band enjoys. Omya presents her leader with a keen polished stone spear at the year's end, to aid his take of the beasts of the field for the kindred. The Var appears to like this season as well, dropping two foals which add to their numbers. No children of men, unfortunately, are their counterparts in birth.

So another years ends in a red sun... a new year, however, dawns ever bright and filled with potential...

Tang worked diligently carving the characters into the sand using a long stick he then copied the characters into a large piece of water buffalo bone. He couldn't tell if he was near the end of the road or not but he felt that he was making progress. Conveying knowledge through the characters was something that was never done before, but he felt that it was of the utmost importance that the Huang gained this knowledge. It was a quiet year, the clan was shocked when they learned that Jana was heavy with child and even worst that she had nearly died giving birth to the boy.

Corhan the boy had black hair the color of night. The Huang would give Jana a medicinal herb to cure her, but otherwise they were busy working hard. There was no time for idleness and much to be done.

Twentysecond of Redleaf, Year Thirtynine of the Reckoning

The arrival of Mikhael from their sister-settlement is unlooked for, but much welcomed. For many years the most common interaction between the two kindreds has been the coming and going of scouts from one to another, exchanging information or perhaps coming for seedlings to establish in the younger of the towns. Brother Mikhael's strange craft, a copy of the ones the trader with their pigs bore, is marveled at by the men and women of the small village beneath the branches of the Mother Tree. It strides over the depths with speed no swimmer can match, and is swift to strike across the water even with only a single man to paddle it with his strange curved spear of wood.

This is, however, a joyous occasion, for with Mikhael now proven as a cunning man, he is deemed fit by the Families to take a wife of his own; Emilia, of House Silverbreath, who is herself a wise woman. Many blessings are heaped upon their joining, for it is auspicious that their children may be clever indeed if they have the favor of the Father, and there are many messages sent from downriver to those of lineage who have made their homes in the shadow of the stone mountain.

There is much else to be thankful for - for peace, for no wild men to fill nights with blood and death, and for a growing knowledge of their own homes and hearts which the Maker is gradually revealed to his chosen.

Jarn (Scholar) continues working on techniques to manage the larger fields, hypothesizing a system of regular planting and harvest to make the most of the bounty
Maria (Scholar) observes the boat that Mikhael rows back upriver, considering means whereby it could be made larger and more sturdy with the tribe's woodworking
Anna (Scholar) anon still as yet continues his work refining methods of smithing the barans tools, to hold a better point and lose less strength in the reforging
Adrius (Scholar) continues a study of how children enter the world, to watch for common maladies which afflict their mothers, and so make childbearing safer
Petyor (Warrior) trains under Lorik, learning his spear-dance
Gunnar (Warrior) trains under Lorik, the better to spill hot crimson blood of foul men
Lorik (Warrior) drills the other warriors
Adorjan (Warrior) hunts in the fields while the other warriors train with Lorik, bearing bow and keen bronze blade
Varya (Worker) bears a keen copper axe to the forests, to fell small trees for the tribe's use
Istvan (Worker) laboriously gathers and winds tough marsh-grasses into cords, for rope
Ulf (Worker) heats stone and breaks it with a hammer, gathering the vestiges for building
Natalya (Worker) grinds and crushes einkorn into fair brown flour
Cynthia (Worker) mixes flour and water and strips of meat, to create sweet-smelling loaves for hungry mouths
Turol (Worker) cuts squashes and einkorn with his sickle, harvesting food for all
Valerie (Worker) harvests and tends crops, sickle in hand
Laika (Scout) goes east of northeast, spying out the land for trading partners
Vanka (Worker Aspirant) watches how buildings are erected
Maria (Worker Aspirant) sees how crops blossom in the fields
Bella (Warrior Aspirant) watches the men as they spar
Marcus (Scholar Aspirant) learns of rune and cunning
5 Children
Adrius and Natalya are wishing to expand their family
Gunnar and Cynthia seek children
Anya and Ulf seek progeny
Turol and Valerie are making a lineage for their own

Mikhael (Scholar) begins a new work on a trammeled house to intensify flames for forging
Emilia (Scholar) yet continues seeking after symbols of health and good humor, to ward men against disease and injury, after traveling to her new home
Ivan (Warrior) hunts the wild pigs of this land, bearing bow and knife
Tanya (Worker) cuts the Healer's Hand, harvesting the most mature stands with a hardy sickle, consuming a measure of the medicines she has prepared to burn away the last vestiges of illness
Lindin (Worker) tends the small plantings of foodstuffs, sickle in hand
Alexander (Scout) continues his work on the trail
Mila (Worker Aspirant) watches how the plantings are carefully tended
Celia (Scout Aspirant) learns of crops and edible plants of distant lands
Ivan and Tanya seek new children to watch the land
Lindin and Alexander embrace the marriage bed, to bring more souls to fair Stalheim
Mikhael, having proven his prowess, is wed to Emilia Silverbreath of Kharbarinth. They take the name Riverborn for their own.

The Island of Lo

The use of language and the pictographs were something they had evolved from the first markings of the Path of Tes'la and the magic that they make. It was a the use of these words and gestures that they recorded their markings as history in their island paradise. Many have carved the first pictures in the use of tattoos and crude bone and copper amulets. Still, the leadership wanted to do more as the first raft is sent to scout beyond the island for the first time in their history. With him goes the prayers to the storm god that he returns with the bounties of energy that Tes'la provided to the world.

Lu, Bo, and
Hem'ly starts trying discover record keeping
Ing, Manu, hunt child birds
Vinta collects breadfruit
Buf'lo and Yo'rk start building another hut
Carn'e uses the raft to explore east of the island to find the mainland

The Pennenthelli

Sickness, terrible sickness and death haunted the settlement, the vengeful gods above decreeing harsh judgment upon the tribe. Now, great effort had to be made in order to save the young Venvild as she thrashed in her tent, pale, gaunt, looking almost as a ghost passed beyond the Veil already. The tribe worked hard, many to make sure they had enough food, it was critical, to Venvild, food was fuel to fight the evil spirits that had taken hold within her and drive them away as the tribe's scholars dropped all of the projects they might have had in mind to care for the young woman, that was now the top priority.

Avunan (Scholar - M - 53): Caring for Venvild using their skills and knowledge in medicine.
Henimen (Warrior - M - 54): Hunting in the plains and defending the tribe, armed with a copper spear, bow and knife.

Tauhlor (Scout - M - 19): Fishing in the river using a harpoon and a basket.
Ellyn (Worker - F - 19): Gathering food in the plains with a knife and basket..
Venvild (Worker - F - 19): Resting in a tent.
Camren (Kid - M - 3): Doing child things watched by the adults.
Davonas (Kid - M - 1): Doing baby things watched by the adults.

Tauhlor and Ellyn spend their nights together in warm embraces.

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 39

It was Kioke who spotted it first.

Or at least thought he had. Of course, when the young boy scampered breathlessly up to the flap-door and called “It’s happening! It’s happening!” – everyone knew. Which was just as well. Because the camel’s new calf was something to behold.
The Khortuun had kept a herd of bleating, ill-tempered camels in their humble canyon for many seasons by then. The beasts lived there as they did, brayed at them with familiar bleats and bugels, and had become as familiar to the children of the Mother-Moon as the red rocks and shifting dust.

And now? At long last? One of the older females – Noor, Kadima had named her – was heavy with offspring. “She’s as heavy as I was, when I was with my last,” she had murmured by the firepit. And it was odd, in a way, how a sense of kinship could form from such a small thought. True, the camels were dirty, ill-tempered and scarcely friendly. Since the seasons of their first taming, the hairy beasts had gone from resenting their Khortuun captors to merely despising them. And yet now? With Noor heavy with offspring, her eyes lidded and neck bowed?

It was something to recognize, at last, as a shared emotion.

“I wonder,” Harro murmured – as the Khortuun followed Kioke’s footsteps to throng by Noor where she lay, bleating forlornly. “I wonder if her calf’ll come with a hump, like her.” Kadima, leaning by her spear at his side, merely shrugged her narrow shoulders. “If it does – no wonder she’s bleating. That calf’ll tear her in half!”

To Kioke and the others, of course, it was a spectacle both strange and wonderous. “Mama?” the youth whispered – his voice loud with something not quite fear. “Why is she making that noise?” With his hand in hers, his mother Ykka favored her eldest with a smile. “She’s giving birth, Kio’. See how big her belly is?” Kioke followed his mother’s pointing finger and nodded. He knew, of course, what birth meant – as surely as any Khortuun boy of nine knew anything at all.

“Oh, you’re all useless – the lot of you!”

Trust Matha, of course, to lose her temper with them. The square, solid farmer amongst them had a nearly endless store of patience when it came to plants. Her beans, she’d coax and nurture endlessly. Prune dead leaves and withered stalks. Carry water and prod the earth. Weed and murmur. Sigh and dig. Yet with people? Heh. With people who stared rather than acted – Matha had as much patience as moonlight had warmth.

So. Bit by bit? Tug by tug? Oh, it was a spectacle alright – because Matha squatted by Noor’s rear end, her calloused hands around her calf’s protruding hooves. And hauled the yelping bundle free; slick from its mothers womb.

The camels hooted and hollered then – and the Khortuun with them. Seypelli even fetched his precious flute, and led them all in a wild, skirling holler-hoot. And Kadima locked eyes for a moment with Noor, who – tired and panting – watched with dark, nervous eyes as the man-pack shouted her newborn into the world.

Noor saw her. And Kadima smiled.

Harro (Male, 59, Scout) [Obsidian Spear & Sling] joins the hunters on their journeys, this year – great striding lizards to hunt and take. [Hunt striding-lizards]
Ginnem (Male, 26, Scout) sets forth into the wild, gasping yonder this year – not to explore a specific region, but to find wanderers. [Seek a mate.]
Kadima (Female, 59, Warrior) [Obsidian Spear & Sling] joins Harro and Yantewe on the hunt for a striding lizard – spear and sling to hand. [Hunt striding lizards]
Yantewe (Male, 37, Warrior) [Obsidian Spear & Sling] hunts, sling at the ready, a mighty striding lizard also. [Hunt striding lizards]

Wylla (Female, 60, Scholar) ponders carven signs and written symbols, sacred knots and mystic glyphs - and how best they might convey meaning. [Research symbolic writing]
Zebas (Male, 57, Scholar) assists his mate Wylla, the thickets of a written language to map and navigate. [Research symbolic writing]
Seypelli (Male, 37, Scholar) assists his parents as well as he is able, to bring vivid meaning from mute symbols. [Research symbolic writing]
Namsut (Female, 18, Scholar) lends her skills to Wylla and the others, that meaning and knowledge might be conveyed through sacred knot-glyphs. [Research symbolic writing]

Matha (Female, 58, Worker) tends to the tribe’s plot of black beans, its harvest to secure. [Harvest black beans]
Ykka (Female, 33, Worker) [Flint Work-Blade] busies herself with the crafting of a spirit-statue. To dance and sing and worship, that it might please the Mother-Moon and all her spirit-children. [Craft an idol to the Mother-Moon]
Ohan (Male, 34, Worker) [Flint Work-Blade] aids Ykka this year; a spirit-idol to the Mothe-Moon to carve and raise. [Craft an idol to the Mother-Moon]

Kioke (Male, 9, Worker-in-training) accompanies Ohan at his work – learning the ways of sweat and toil.
Yumar (Male, 7, Child) is not yet relevant to the records.
Birama (Male, 4, Child) is not yet relevant to the records.
Ykka’s first daughter (Female, 3, Child) is not yet relevant to the records.
Ykka’s second daughter (Female, 3, Child) is not yet relevant to the records.

Seypelli lays with Namsut this year – by the light of the Moon.
