The First Year of Varruk, The Thirty-Sixth Year of Wrath

Varruk stares into the fire before him and his two remaining companions. Varlok, son of Vartuk, Varruk’s father, is dead. Though this world is brutal, Varlok was a commanding figure. Though under his stony grip the number of the Varruk grew, with his death their people shattered. Where once there was a dozen, there are now only three who tend to the pyre within which his father rests. This shattering was a personal insult to Varruk: the others did not think that he could lead them to a new prosperity like his father. Where his father had broken the beasts that they now used to carry their goods and their person, he had proven himself as a hunter. Where his father was cunning, he was blunt. Where his father was stoic, he was passionate. He would not succumb to the expectations set by his father.

His mother had long since passed, ten winters ago while his father was mastering the great beasts. He was now the oldest of those who remained, though his blood was still young. Varruk is now left with a train of the beasts for which his kin are famed, and two of his closest friends. Omya was a fellow huntress, who he worked and trained with in his youth. Though she was his younger, she was often more conservative in her actions, taking her time to corner the kill. She knew he would be able to provide for those who remained, and her trust was reassuring to the new leader. Finally, there was Salaya, daughter of Koraya and Heiva. She was a wise woman, more cunning than either of the other two who remained. While she likely has led the easiest life of any among the tribe even before her parents left with the others, she has accepted that these coming moons will be hard with so few of them left. Mercifully her new work of minding the camp is limited, as almost all the material was taken with those who left Varruk’s protection.

Now Varruk stood with his life, the lives of those still loyal to him, and the future of his band before him. They were blessed with strong leaders before, including his still-burning father, and Varruk would be no exception. He mounts his father’s Var bareback for the first time and he would ride out, looking for a beast to secure for his remaining companions, to demonstrate his skill and rightfulness of succession. He would ride into the open plains, confidence being almost foolhardy as his beast shudders beneath a new rider, but its somewhat-broken demeanor prevents it from flinging its rider to the ground. The beast would pick up speed, the last of the Var taking up his birthright as he scatters the ashes of his father into the plains and open sky.

Omya was not as certain of her convictions as her new leader. She had little option, as she had few friends among the rest of the tribe, and figured she would quickly be removed from them if she had left Varruk. Nonetheless, she was a huntress, and while her new leader was the stronger of the two by far, she had slain beasts as well. She knew food supplies were low, but there were only three of them now, and she would need to make sure that the sanguine Varruk did not go hunting some predator without proper equipment. While she had a love of him, she was truly frustrated with the lot that he had left them all with. While his own delusions of grandeur could likely result in his own death, she would do her best to make sure that does not happen, for all their sakes.

Salaya was taking the situation much more jubilantly than her compatriots. Her parents were finally gone, and while she would never wish death upon them, she was glad that she was now free to do what she wanted. She was resentful of the regular berry picking her parents made her do, and while she knew such things would likely be needed in the future, she felt that her skills were going underused. She had always had a fascination with the Var, those massive creatures who had hauled the tribe’s tents and food before those cowards ran off with most of the latter. While the secrets of taming them were Varruk’s alone, she would always come over to them, offering morsels of berries and plants to them. She had befriended most of them, other than Varlok’s horse. Now she was able to be open and honest in her pursuit of trying to train them, her ambitions being made clear to Varruk, who approved of the idea as it would make migration much easier through the golden fields that surround them.

Crunchy Bits
Varruk (Male/26/Warrior)[Var(Horse), Club] hunts around his temporary “Camp” for the rest of the band
Omya (Female/20/Warrior)[Club] would gather branches and try to sharpen them against stone for hunting spears and stakes. She would keep unsuitable wood with the Var for building material later.
Salaya (Female/18/Scholar) would try to train the Var (Horses) to better domesticate them for more proper riding.
Varruk and Omya have intimate relations and might have a child

Saladon Nomads
Migration Period
The newest member of the tribe was a welcomed addition for the Saladon Nomads. However they have spent to long on the current plains, and the game have become few. It was now time to move. This time, they would head northwest, returning to the heartlands of the land they called Saladon. Leaving the southern lands that had provided for them over the recent years.

During this migration, Varrus would hope Anatoly and Chana would bond. It was his hope, Anatoly would become Chana's companion and find happiness together. He wasn't going to force them to become companions, but it was his hope that they would bond together. A happy companionship was priority, not his legacy. Hopefully once they get settled in their new land, Varrus can get Anatoly to become more familiar with their tongue.

While the men traveled farther ahead to explore the neighboring regions, the rest of the tribe focused primarily on work and food collecting. Fara decided to dedicate her time to focusing on horses, seeing if she could find some way to let Varrus have a easier time exploring at his elderly age. As for Lana, she focused on gathering the tribes food. Chana prioritized making a hide cloak for Anatoly, and Adney focused on making a second sledge for the tribe. All was well on the verdant plains.

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 36

Title: Pillar of The Four with Corvidian reliefs
Period: First Kingdom
Date: Third Intermediate
Culture: Corvidian
Medium: Marble
Dimensions: H.: 39 5/8 in. (100.6 cm)
Classification: Stone Sculpture
Credit Line: Marragon and Farnek A. Cosgrove Jr. Fund, 2013
Accession Number: 2013.911

A fine example of classicizing art, this marble pillar bears on all four sides reliefs in the Corvidian style. The themes are drawn from the world of the Four Pillars - a hierarchical cast-cult common amongst the Corvidian tribes since time immemorial. A flowering acanthus plant carved in low relief occupies one of the long sides, while on the other, in higher relief, two female figures with billowing garments surmount a Silenus fern. Their attributes identify them as stylized versions of the “hadrae”, the personifications of the four sacred societal castes. At the top is the Scholar holding a garland in one hand and a sheaf of wheat in the other. At the bottom, the Labourer carries pomegranates and bunches of grapes in the fold of her robe, while a third figure, now missing, most probably represented the Hunter or Warrior. Both short sides are decorated with characteristic staff-motifs, likely meant to convey divine power.

This work is notable for its unusual iconography. Decorative relief pillars are predominately adorned by elaborate trailing vegetation motifs; human figures and animals, if present, play only a secondary role in the composition. Mythological scenes as attested here are rare. On the whole, the cult of the Four Pillars – also known as the ‘Corvidian Faith’ - first came into prominence at the beginning of the First Kingdom; a geographical area now encompassed by the Lazarian Republic. From the First Kingdom onward, the personified Four Pillars was arguably the most important gods of the Corvidian pantheon. As creator gods, the Pillars were responsible for structuring Corvidian society, delegating tasks and ensuring harmony within the extended lines of clans and bondsmen. The main sanctuary of the Four PIllars is thought to have been the immense temple complex at Inambé, on the east bank of the river that bisects Lazar’s modern day capital. On pylons and temple walls of the Inambé site, the personification known as The Warrior is often depicted presenting a sword to various Corvidian rulers, thus conferring on them military victory.

This particular pillar, carved from a single piece of solid marble, is an extremely rare example of statuary made of precious materials that, according to ancient descriptions, filled the sanctuaries of temples. Lesser versions of the stylized carvings that run its length could also have been mounted atop of ceremonial sceptres or standards. For the Corvidians, the warm, dun-toned marble and the sheen of its surface were associated with the sun, and the skin of gods was supposed to be made of it. The soft modelling of the figures’ torsos, the narrow waists, and other features are typical of the art of the Third Intermediate period. This era marks the political decline of centralized power in Lazar, but it is also a period of great artistic achievement. Works in marble and metal (gold, silver, and, above all, bronze) were of especially fine quality, and this Pillar of The Four testifies to the excellence typical of the period.

The Pennenthelli

Another year of celebration came upon the tribe, this time for the fiftieth winter of life for three of it's members, Avunan, Jenwin and Latozar, and while there was much feasting and merriment in the evening, especially between newly-boned Tauhlor and Ellyn and in some lesser extent between Ahleth and Venvild, the chief's mind remained preoccupied with thoughts. Thoughts of the future of his people, was Henimen right? Was that what the Pennenthelli needed to become in order to truly grow, survive and prosper? He could see the... issue, if one could call it that, but would he be able to make that decision as chief... would he let the Pennenthelli turn into a tribe of... such people. It weighed heavily on his mind ever since the day of that fateful conversation, and one day, he would need to make a decision. The last people they had met, the Niari, turned out to be friends, he often found himself wondering about them, where they had traveled, how the boy that he had been tutoring was going, what was his name again, Israd? No, Isrid! Had he mastered the arts that the Pennenthelli chief taught him, he should have, Isrid was a bright kid, no doubt greatly helping his people now.

Life went on for the Pennenthelli, days of feasting and days of work. While Avunan and Ahleth were trying different methods of working the hides into something better, most of the rest of the tribe was out securing the food-supply of the tribe. Latozar had finally fired up the new furnace constructed during the previous year, he and young Hervath were now working the copper ingot they had previously smelted into two keen-edged metal spears, superior to the flint weapons that the tribe was currently using. Then there were plans for many more tools to be made from the Sundrop ore all while Jen once more made ready to depart on a distant ranging.

Avunan (Scholar - M - 50): Helps his son to devise a way to tan hides into leather.
Henimen (Warrior - M - 51): Hunting in the plains armed with a spear, bow and knife.
Jenwin (Scout - F - 50): Exploring South-East-East, armed with a spear, bow and knife.
Latozar (Worker - M - 50): Works the furnace attempting to make two copper-tipped spears equipped with a flint axe.
Ronan (Warrior - M - 31): Hunting in the plains with a spear, knife and a sling.
Ahleth (Scholar - M - 26): Attempts to find a way to work the many hides that they have into leather.
Hervath (Worker in training - M - 19): Works the furnace along with Latozar.
Tauhlor (Scout - M - 16): Fishing in the river using a harpoon and a basket.
Ellyn (Worker - F - 16): Attempts to craft another self-bow using an axe and a knife.
Venvild (Worker - F - 16): Forages for berries, fruits and edible roots with a knife and a basket.

Tauhlor and Ellyn spend their nights together in warm embraces.
Ahleth and Venvild spend their nights together trying for a baby.

The River Folk, at the Mouth of the Riverlands

"You're risking the very lives of our children!" A male voice boomed across the open plains, small fauna scattering away from the angry roar. A closer look would reveal a young man, his fiery red mane glinting in the harsh sunlight. Facing him were the five elders of the tribe, Progenitors of the new River Folk, destined to be legendary in the eyes of their descendants. But now... the new generation was unsatisfied. Progress was their goal, and if the Ancients stood in their way, they too would fall. Harris, the young man in question, turned to the tribe's scout.
"You, Varin, saw the weapons of our neighbors yourself. Sharp blades, strange sticks... our lives and the lives of our children are in jeopardy so long as the Folk are undefended." He gripped an axe in hand, one of the tribe's only useful weapons - for the moment. "We have the axes, we have the blades... and we have the new stone-crackers. But we need proper weapons to protect our sons and daughters."
The Progenitors stared at this upstart for a long while, muttering amongst themselves and considering his words. Harris defiantly held their gaze, dedicated to advancing his cause.
"Very well." Katrina, the Crafter, spoke up. She untied a pickaxe from her waist and tossed it to Harris, who snatched it out of the air.
"You will be the first General of the River. Your first task is to gather resources for weapons. The scholars will journey south to our neighbors, and learn the ways of their strange weapons - Varin found them friendly enough. He will collect stone for a new furnace - I will begin crafting. You have made your impact, General."

The Sons of Corvus, Year 35

There is more than enough food to go around this year. Despite all the hunters being gone, there is plenty. All tribesmen eat their fill and laugh around the fire, a cheery spirit and good disposition filling their hearts.

Lia has managed to convey in entirety the essence of the bow - it is her husband, Lopen, who turns out the first functioning weapon. She is proud of him, giving him a quick peck on the cheek in approval. It is hung upon the entrance to the main shelter, where the children and old folk of the village stay.

This year, Janon and Cara are sent to gather more goats. Having a single goat is pointless, unless they plan to have it for a feast. But perhaps, with mating partners, they can create a sizable herd. These fields of grain provide many opportunities for these strange bleating animals to thrive - all in all, it is a worthy expedition. Janon hoists the portable tent upon his shoulder and departs with his wife, kissing his small son and daughter goodbye for now. They will be back this year if they manage to capture two females - however, if not, they shall return soon enough.

Cavon still persists on his obsession. Juna shakes her head at her husband near every morning, as he sits next to the fire, attempting to meld the stones into some other shape through bowls of stone and fervent prayers. It seems to be a waste of time, but he swears that he shall create tools that are greater than the sunsetstone. Better care of the plants? Medical care? Different types of clothing? All cast to the wayside. Juvon is frustrated, and he swears that once this madness with the stones is complete, he shall never touch the accursed rocks once more.

The travelers reach the Huang this year, where they are greeted warmly. While their arrival was rather unexpected, the Huang seem to be amenable to the idea of striking at their long-time enemies next year. Lupen - now Liu Xiaotong - greets them, happy to see his cousin and uncle once more. He is content with his new life, but inquires as to the well being of his family at home. Thankfully, Corvin and his son have nothing but good news to report.

Corvin (M, Warrior, 53) (Equipped: Compound Bow, Two Wolves) travels to the Huang Settlement. If there is extra time in the year after they arrive, he hunts for them.
Corvan (M, Warrior, 33) (Equipped: Sling) travels to the Huang Settlement. If there is extra time in the year after they arrive, he hunts for them.
Ceston (M, Scout, 49) (Equipped: Sling) travels to the Huang Settlement. If there is extra time in the year after they arrive, he hunts for them.
Jana (F, Worker, 28) travels to the Huang Settlement. If there is extra time in the year after they arrive, she helps gather Bitterroot. (Equipped: Portable Tent)
Cavon (M, Spirit-Guide, 53) continues his search into the stones. If there is one thing he shall accomplish before his return to the afterlife, it is this. (Research: Alloys)
Juvon (M, Spirit-Guide, 32) aids his father, though he yearns to pursue his own studies at this point. (Research: Alloys)
Lia (F, Spirit-Guide, 21) joins the two men of the tribe in their efforts with the stones. (Research: Alloys)
Cora (F, Spirit-Guide Trainee, 11) works closely with Lia to make a breakthrough, hopefully. (Research: Alloys)
Juna (F, Worker, 53) (Equipped: Copper Work-Knife) gathers wheat from the plot. (Gather Wheat)
Janon Stonebreaker (M, Worker, 29) (Equipped: Rope) heads to West of South of South this year with his bride, attempting to capture more goats. They set up camp there, not returning home unless they capture two female goats. (Capture Goat (Female))
Lopen (M, Worker, 26) (Equipped: Copper Work-Knife) gathers wheat from the plot. (Gather Wheat)
Cara (F, Worker, 25) (Equipped: Rope, Portable Tent) heads to West of South of South this year with her husband Janon, attempting to capture more goats. (Capture Goat (Female))
Cana Stonebreaker (F, Infant, 3) continues to be a challenge for her mother.
Conan Stonebreaker (M, Infant, 2) eats and sleeps, growing into a hearty little fellow.

Cara and Janon attempt for a child.
Lopen and Lia attempt for a child.
Corvan and Jana attempt for a child.

Stored grain and smoked meat are consumed first, then any excess grain or meat gathered this year is stored for next year.

Twentieth of First Seed, Year Thirtysix of the Reckoning

Outside the wind howled, and inside the Deepkin were safe and warm. Petyor was stretched out beneath his nest of blankets and furs, staring at the high ceiling of the mortared dwelling. Occasionally a drip, condensation from the water outside, fell nearby. Around him the rest of the tribe, save Gunnar, who was on watch, slept in quiet repose, the dark hours of the night passing by.

Petyor was glad of the warmth, of the banked fire that radiated heat from the center of the long hall to his toes. Normally he would have been slumbering with the rest of them, but his mind had been full of late with ideas, with passions. A combination of factors had slowly awoken his normally content faculties.

Lorik moved with a speed and grace unmatched in the tribe, dancing between the points of practice spears, burying arrow after arrow in the fur-covered log which the tribe used as a target. He was almost wasted on the hunt, so well did he prosecute the meaning of being a warrior, and this had set the leader of the tribal warriors into thought. Keen barans, which Istvan had mastered the shaping of, held a strong point much better than mere copper. What might a warrior of Lorik's skill, armed with a spear of barans, accomplish? He could dance between enemies without danger, laying many low with his accurate thrusts of deadly barans. Petyor mind turned back to when they drove off the barbarians along the Black River.

One day such men would return. They would have to be ready. But the barbarians would be in for a rough surprise, as able warriors like Lorik danced through their numbers in a lethal tempo with weapons that did not dull and who severed bone and sinew as easily as hide and flesh.

Jarn (Scholar) continues his attentions upon the amber barley, which grows in small numbers near Kharbarinth. An exotic crop, he seeks to understand how it grows and what it may be used for.

Emilia (Scholar) seeks after symbols of health and good humor, to ward men against disease and injury
Petyor (Warrior) hunts his old quarry, the bison, with bow and knife
Gunnar (Warrior) joins father on the hunt with bow ready and knife
Lorik (Warrior) leads Adorjan in drills, to train the younger man in combat
Adorjan (Warrior) trains alongside Lorik, wrestling and developing methods of warfare
Varya (Worker) sets fires to break copper ore, then crushes the remainder with her heavy sledgehammer for gathering
Istvan (Worker) steams and refines the Healer's Hand, to make poultices as guard against illness
Natalya (Worker) carefully carves self bows, for defense
Cynthia (Worker) burns timber into valuable charcoal to feed fires
Turol (Worker) cuts squashes and einkorn with his sickle, harvesting food for all
Valerie (Worker) harvests and tends crops, sickle in hand
Ulf (Worker) harvests and cuts food from the fields, sickle in hand
Laika (Scout) ventures southeast, spying out the lands there for other men
Vanka (Worker Aspirant) watches how buildings are erected
Maria (Worker Aspirant) sees how crops blossom in the fields
Bella (Warrior Aspirant) watches the men as they spar
2 Children
Adrius and Natalya are wishing to expand their family
Gunnar and Cynthia seek children
Anya and Ulf seek progeny
Turol and Valerie are joined in bond, and take for themselves the name of Greeneye

Mikhael (Scholar) anon still as yet continues his work with wood, hollowing out a mighty fallen tree with fire and axe to ride the currents
Ivan (Warrior) hunts the wild pigs of this land, bearing bow and knife
Tanya (Worker) heats meteoric iron with charcoal fires, breaking it for gathering
Lindin (Worker) tends the small plantings of foodstuffs, sickle in hand
Alexander (Scout) goes back to Kharbarinth, to bring seedlings of the blueberries for planting
Mila (Worker Aspirant) watches how the plantings are carefully tended
Celia (Scout Aspirant) learns of crops and edible plants of distant lands
Ivan and Tanya seek new children to watch the land
Lindin and Alexander embrace the marriage bed, to bring more souls to fair Stalheim
2 Children

Seasons come, seasons go..

Nothing of great interest passes this year - at least not where men know of it.

Warclyfe: The people of Warclyfe eat well enough. The raft is well under work, and will soon be ready to take to the waves. The wooden lashing is almost complete, and the sails are being laboriously sewn together.

The Deepkin: There is ample food for all in Kharbarinth. Much copper has been gathered from the hills, and several portions of the blue-green sap of the Healer's Hand refined. Two clever self bows have also been crafted. The squash planting has been growing rapidly, though the planting of barley has withered somewhat. Four more pigs have been born into the domestic herd. Natalya falls pregnant this year, and though her labor is easy, the child that comes forth dies shortly thereafter, a point which causes much mourning. Cynthia bears a healthy girl, and Valerie of the new coupling bears a lovely boy.

Ground beneath a heavy stone, the threshed wheat soon gives up its nutrients, becoming a pale brown powder which is foul to eat, but cast upon boiling water, is a nutritious gruel. This flour proves easy to store, and loathe to rot, especially when kept dry. In this manner the cereal crops of the Deepkin will surely be of great value.

In Stalheim all eat well enough, and a large quantity of iron has been broken from the fallen mountain. The sprouts of the Healer's Hand brought from Kharbarinth have taken root in the fertile soil of Stalheim, and there is good news - the chestnut saplings have dropped their first nuts, who are already putting forth shoots as the grove covers more land. Tanya bears a healthy baby boy with the turning of autumn, but the labor leaves her pallid and weak. Only after regular sessions of infusion from the medicinal poultices does her strength return to her.

Southeast of Kharbarinth, the young scout wanders. These plains are wide, and extend in all directions, both east, south, and west. Great herds of buffalo graze on the land, favored prey of the Deepkin, and thermal springs mark the ground. Brilliant red cinnabar occurs in great outcroppings near the springs. There are, however, no signs of men in these lands.

The Corvidians: The detachment from the Corvidians arrives in the lands of the Huang, and successfully hunt enough food for their own needs, though little more. The travelers that have headed to tame goats, in contrast, soon find their supplies exhausted - luckily they manage to forage enough small roots and tubers after they arrive to stave off starvation over the winter. The main settlement has enough grain, though not much to store. No children are born to any of the Corvidians this year, likely because of them are traveling and barely feeding themselves. There is good news, though - a new mating pair of dappled wolves have joined the pack at the main settlement.

A beautiful fire-seared crucible, wherein molten metals may be mixed with ease. This the Corvidians suspend over their campfire, a part of the tribe's obsession completed. The mixes they draw forth from the crucible may, perhaps, open the door to many great things.

The Aederfolk: Both settlements eat well enough. A fine quantity of magnetite has been retrieved, but unfortunately the quantity of pig iron fastened to a small handle proves of little use - it breaks almost immediately upon being employed for beating more pig iron. In the west, a small taro planting has been established. Two new goats have been tamed, but unfortunately the barley planting is shrinking. Carman has a child, a beautiful baby girl. Creirwy also bears a girl.

Good news. A fine crucible of fire-darkened wood has been prepared, and the iron brewed within her confines to keep it away from the soot that appears to be contaminating it. The resultant bloom of melted iron appears to have much superior properties to the pig-iron the tribe has used previously.

Khortuun: There is not quite enough food this year - luckily none suffer for this deficit. Unfortunately, the men sent to return with camel-captives are empty handed, their net having broken in attempting to seize one of the beasts. Ykka, dividing her attention between spear and prickly pears, still manages to put together one of the keen weapons. The cavern, meanwhile, is being shored up nicely. The bean planting is flourishing, as is the small stand of rope-grass.

Manisaharu: The tribe eats well enough. The other band seems peaceful, and though their language is difficult to decipher, they gesture extravagant waves of their hands at the gift of yak-meat, which seems to be well received. Their numbers are slightly fewer than the Manisaharu, or at least so Kara thinks, and though they bear spears of keen flint, they seem to possess little else in the way of advanced technology. More food, perhaps, could lure some of them to join the tribe. Ida has recovered, though Keta is still languishing. Josha bears a baby girl this year, who is born hale and healthy, and fortunately a new yak has been tamed and added to the tribe to replace the one slaughtered.

The Machaka: No raid being forthcoming, the Machaka continue their guard, crafting more weapons for both hunting and defense. A new child has been born, a formidable girl whose wails shake the forests.

The Huanca: There is ample food for all. A new mud-daub hut is rising. The Huang seems to be getting the hang of taking care of the thick delicious tubers the Huanca value - it will not be long now before they are ready to raise them on their own. Inkaurqu has brought forth twin girls, a great boon to the tribe.

The Huang: There is ample food for all in the village. Chao has begun gathering timber for the palisade, even as the Huanca seem to be advancing in their understanding of horticulture. Soon Tang should be able to return to Zhai Cheng and his own kindred. The protorice planting, unfortunately, has not taken root, and will require more seedlings. Xiang is pregnant by the start of spring, but her childbirth is long and hard - she loses the baby, and only barely escapes death herself with the use of the last of the tribe's bitteroot. Song also falls pregnant this year, a thing that worries the tribe greatly, for they are out of medicinal remedies. Fortunately her boy is born easily and with no complications, definitely a boon of the ancestors. There is more ill news though. The jadegrass, so recently returned to a state of flourishing, has caught a disease which destroys much of the plot.

Charcoal. The elusive material, and a simple mistake - the Huang never thought of burying the wood as it burned, to prevent the spirits of the air from consuming its trammeled vitality. Some wood may be so charred beneath a bed of soil into hale and plentiful fuel that burns hotter than mere timber.

The Riverlanders: There is enough food for all, though not much more than that. The copper pickaxes prove to be somewhat less than up to the task of mining stone that holds their own making within it, bending with many strikes - but it is still certainly a quicker process than merely gathering the stones by hand. A good quantity of copper is returned to the village, though Harris' take is rather measly compared to that of his trained counterpart. Katrina, working at the forge, finds that she lacks enough wood to bind both spearheads she has prepared - but at least one weapon is better than none, she contemplates as the furnace crumbles after it cools. Learning from the Pennenthelli, the scholars are making swift progress in comprehending their strange bent spearthrowers. Chase has fortunately recovered from the birthing sickness. No children bless the tribe.

The Pennenthelli: There is enough food for all. Ellyn has gathered a fine quantity of timber, to use in the creation of her bows. With no fuel to feed the furnace, the would-be smiths turn to the forests to build up their stockpile of fuel. No doubt next year they will be ready for their ambitions to succeed. Ellyn bears a healthy baby boy this winter, a joy for all.

South of east and east and into the forests Jenwin ventures, noting the coast to the north, and the east and the south who fall away into more forested depths. Green ore can be found here, and a strange gray stone with powdery skin. Hefty cats that hunt through the forests watch her from canopy.

The Nirari Band: The band eats very well. Isrid's essay is finished - a fine new composite bow is prepared for the use of the band. Two new hide cloaks are now ready for the use of the tribe.

Out into the desert Lilitu roams, through a gap in the mountains. The air is dry and hurts her skin, leaving her lips chapped and her throat dry. To both north and east high mountains rise, but to the west and the south the desert unfolds to the horizon. Curious pale blue berries grow in the hollows of the land here - but Lilitu barely notices them, for at the heart of the land a deep chasm opens in the ground. An immense hole descends below the desert floor, and huge stones of pale green are scattered about the cavern. Moreover, strange beasts roam here and there, great beasts as tall as men, with fearsome muscles and long terrifying fangs. There is something else strange about this area though - there are footprints of men here.

The Saladonian Nomads: The Saladonians migrate north and west, back out into the familiar plains. Their migration is strange to Anatoly, but the land also a curious question. He does not understand why the Saladonians are coming to this land, with the poisonous snakes, but that is a matter for Varrus, not him.

The Hesukar Band: The Hesukar move further down the river, seeking foes. Their wolfhounds soon catch the scent of men, faint, but near, a sign which makes the warriors of the Black Kings rattle their spears in fervor for battle. Soon. This land has a wide river running south through the forest, and immense trees which remind the Hesukar of the great trees in the wide boreal forests of the north. Brilliant native copper can be found here, and strange blue flowers. The scent of men comes from the south and east...

The Varruk: There is a shortfall of food this year - Varruk has taken ill with a cold that settles into his chest over the winter. His attempts to track other members of his old band have turned up little fruit, perhaps due to his lack of tracking ability when it comes to men. Omya has gathered a fair amount of wood that will soon be useful for weapons. Unfortunately no children bless the tribe.

So the year ends, and a new year dawns...

The Sons of Corvus, Year 36

A great triumph this year, though accompanied with hints of faint concern.

In the main settlement, Cavon has made another leap towards the prophecy he has been working towards for most of his life - the stones, shaped in a way as to be any desired tool or weapon. While the sunsetstone was decent enough, it is fragile and bends easily. But perhaps, by mixing in some of the other stones, they will settle upon a stone that will melt within the fire, yet harden into something sterner than what they currently have. Either way, he is thrilled about the crucible they have created, and even dour Juvon grins at the sight of the metals mixing together.

This discovery is aided by a hint of approval from the Great Spirit - two kinspirited wolves, without any command of their own, have joined the pack. This is a benign sign indeed, and the tribe celebrates.

However, a hint of concern - Janon and Cara's absence, combined with that of the travelling warriors, has left many hungry mouths. The children whine and complain, missing their parents greatly - as well as the memories of full bellies and warm meals around the fire. Lia is sent away from the fire of discovery to work closely with her husband, as well as young Cora - hopefully they can get by until the workers return with goats in tow.

Three season's travel away, Janon and Cara struggle, devouring the small roots and tubers that dot the landscape. There is a plant quite similar to the wheat of their home, and they manage to subsist well enough on such fare. Janon is greatly frustrated by this journey. For one, he does not see the merit of gathering and capturing these goats in the first place. These animals are unwieldy and stubborn, and he would prefer dealing with the fierce and wild wolves of their home instead. He chases them across the landscape, attempting to ensnare and lasso a mating pair before returning home. Do they even taste good? He certainly hopes so - otherwise, this will have been a tremendous waste of time.

And, quietly, a second reason lurks within the back of his mind. This was his younger brother's errand - and yet HE is the one to run off to this foolish errand? Despite his near single-handed creation of the great hill-home which they reside, and the crop of wheat that ensures their stability, he is the one sent by his father to capture these foul creatures. Psh. It should have been Lopen, he thinks to himself, and he shakes his head in frustration.

Thankfully, it seems that Cara is able to provide for the two of them...though who knows what the whims of fate decree?

In the lands of the Huang, Corvin, Corvan, and Ceston prepare for battle. It is time to honor their promise to the Huang, and to solidify the friendship between the two peoples into the sands of time.

(Huang Settlement)
Corvin (M, Warrior, 54) (Equipped: Compound Bow, Two Wolves) sets out with the warriors of the Huang to wipe out the barbarians that call themselves the Nanfang.
Corvan (M, Warrior, 34) (Equipped: Sling) sets out with the warriors of the Huang to wipe out the barbarians that call themselves the Nanfang.
Ceston (M, Scout, 50) (Equipped: Sling) sets out with the warriors of the Huang to wipe out the barbarians that call themselves the Nanfang.
Jana (F, Worker, 29) remains in the Huang settlement, hunting and fishing with Liu Han.

(Main Settlement)
Cavon (M, Spirit-Guide, 54) is invigorated by this breakthrough, and launches onwards with mixing the dun-gray and the sunsetstone. Initial mixtures seem promising...though not quite what they need to be yet. (Research: Bronze)
Juvon (M, Spirit-Guide, 33) helps his father with this venture, seeing the merit within this new discovery. (Research: Bronze)
Lia (F, Spirit-Guide, 22) gathers grain with her husband this year, setting aside chasing the metal. (Gather Wheat)
Cora (F, Spirit-Guide Trainee, 12) takes time off this year to gather wheat instead.(Gather Wheat)
Juna (F, Worker, 54) (Equipped: Copper Work-Knife) gathers wheat from the plot. (Gather Wheat)
Lopen (M, Worker, 27) (Equipped: Copper Work-Knife) gathers wheat from the plot. (Gather Wheat)
Cana Stonebreaker (F, Infant, 4) continues to be a challenge for her mother.
Conan Stonebreaker (M, Infant, 3) eats and sleeps, growing into a hearty little fellow.

(Portable Tent, S|S|W)
Janon Stonebreaker (M, Worker, 30) (Equipped: Rope, Rope) attempts to capture two female goats this year, staying in S|S|W until this task is accomplished. If this is accomplished by year's end, the couple shall head home.
Cara (F, Worker, 26) gathers from the maize that surrounds them to provide for the couple. (Gather Maize)

Cara and Janon attempt for a child.
Lopen and Lia attempt for a child.
Corvan and Jana attempt for a child.

In the main settlement, the stored grain is consumed first, and Lopen/Lia have priority on food in order to increase childbearing odds. Nothing will be stored this year.

The Second Year of Varruk, The Thirty-Seventh Year of Reckoning

At first, things seemed to be going well for the Varruk, their leader having made a meager catch on his first hunt from horseback. His father’s steed is large and hardy, well adapted to the fruitful plain, and surprisingly adapted to its new rider. Though it takes the passing of many days and nights, the rider of beasts has taken up the mantle of his predecessor. Omya was doing well for herself, keeping the fires lit on cooler nights and collecting a good stock of wood. While this stock is no heartwood that would make for sturdy constructions, it would be more than adequate for the purposes they have been assembled. Salaya had taken well to the Var, though it had taken Vartuk years and Varlok decades, the wise woman was quickly learning how to gain the attention of the beasts that now hauled their wood. The small band would wander the plains, eventually making their way to the edge of their known world, settling at the coast of the great sea that lies on the edge of the plains. Varruk hoped that he would be able to find animals attempting to drink from the water and reduce the number of directions they could escape.

Sadly, this initial success quickly faded as Varruk’s hunting strategies did not pay off. Days would pass without food, and stresses began to mount as the three began to become gaunt.

The fire is faint as the assembled band huddle together in the chilly winter morning. Though the weather is mercifully temperate on the plains, the once optimistic fire of the band’s new leader has begun to cool somewhat. While the Var have wide fields on which to graze, the trio find themselves going hungry on some nights. This lack of significant catches has resulted in increased tensions among them. Varruk himself gives a raspy cough as they rest under a starry sky. The coughing and aches that plagued him only compounded his growing insecurities as a new leader. As his companions look to him with a mix of worry and pity, he would grunt irately. Omya would use simple words, their language limited and guttural in intonation. “Do not rise, rest.” Salaya had initially looked away, but would nod in agreement with the huntress.

Fear would fade to anger as he rises, the man taking up his club. He WOULD succeed, those who doubted him WOULD be proven wrong. He would begin to walk toward the Var that remained near the encampment. Omya would rise as well, giving a snarl “Rest.” She would demand, grabbing his wrist. His hardheadedness persevering over his reticence “No. I must hunt, you may follow.” He would make it to his Var, pulling himself up onto its back. It would huff in brief protest until he was properly sitting atop it, the beast not opposed to the lighter weight of its rider. Omya would grab at his thigh in frustration, but he would kick her away, inadvertently sending the Var lurching forward.

Omya would look back to Salaya, returning to the warmth as the soft lapping of the water at the nearby coast could be heard. The camp-minder would say with comparable eloquence “He needs help, go with him.” She would not seem frustrated, if anything she seemed more relaxed that their foolhardy leader was now gone. Omya would speak pointedly “I cannot keep up with a Var, unless you’ve learned their language.”

Salaya would sink a little, she knew that Omya began to get irritated by her efforts to try and interact with the beasts instead of support their increasingly dire situation. “Some day you will ride them, and you will thank me.” She replied, still clinging to optimism of the previous year “But now I will help you, and you will help Varruk.” She says, picking up a pair of stones and grinding them together. “Follow his tracks, make sure he does not die.” She says, leaving off the implicit danger of their leader’s death.

Varruk (Male/27/Warrior)[Var(Horse), Club] Exerts himself to hunt animals for the band, seeking a great beast to prove himself
Omya (Female/21/Warrior)[Club] Hunts for food with Varruk, not quite aware of his pursuit of unneeded danger but assisting him nonetheless.
Salaya (Female/19/Scholar) would attempt to make stone spears from the local limestone and gathered wood. She would continue to train the Var (Horses) to better domesticate them for more proper riding if possible.
Varruk and Omya have intimate relations and might have a child

龙舞

The Huang would pray to the ancestors to give them strength. Then they left the warriors traveling with their friends and allies the Corvidians to attack the Nanfang.

中国

Ill fortune has Xiang would give birth to a stillborn, the child scarcely given his name so that his soul could be accepted by King Yama in the Spirit World. Xiang could not even cry for she was too sick and the birth was very hard on her only a helping of bitterroot allowing a spark of life to cling to her body. Ming would spend her time caring for the young wise woman it was fortunate that they had medicine a boon that most men did not have or else Xiang would be heading for the next world has well. Meanwhile her husband Xiaotong would craft the poultice that would hopefully restore her to good health. Dire news with the jadegrass planting shrinking, but the Huang would continue working onwards Tao felt a special affinity for the plant, has well has for the special gift from Heaven he had seen in his dreams called "silk".

Of course the other wise men and women had convinced him that learning how to work the hematite from the Land of Iron was of the upmost importance but he felt this jadegrass was just has important even though a series of unfortunate events led to it's continual demise. With their strongest hunters gone not many hands could be spent focused on expanding the planting times where uncertain. Thus it fell on the scholar to return it to its former glory.

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 37

Time was kind to the Khortuun. That is to say, the Mother-Moon watched over her children – and her children in turn sang her praises. And why, by all the spirits, should they not? The second home-cave was getting walled and ready at a decent enough pace – “I’m actually surprised,” Ohan admitted. Forearms grey with mud. “It’s a lot easier once you get the hang of it.” – and as for Ykka’s new spears? Well. Already, she had presented a first to Kadima. The old war-mother had eyed the black stone-glass with mean, dark eyes – and then puckered her mouth into a small, wrinkly smile.

Obsidian, after all, cut like nothing else.

If only Harro’s net had been as reliable! True, the woven-grass net the lanky tracksman had relied on for so many years was hardly much for cutting. But still, it had served him well in countless captures of lizards and desert mice. And yet now? While out seeking new camel-captives with Ginnem? A braying camel had shook its lanky body to dodge a rope, and with a faint-but-unmistakeable tear, Harro’s new had twisted apart. Alas and alack.

“It would’ve been fine if it hadn’t torn like that!” grumbled the old man, and ran a long, brown hand across the shining dome of his bald head. Ginnem, at his side, tore his gaze from the retreating hump of their latest prospective camel. “Isn’t that a bit like saying you would’ve hit if you hadn’t missed?” In other words, a damn obvious thing? Harro furrowed his brows at him then, and set mean, dark eyes on his younger fellow’s face – daring him to show mirth. “Shut it.”

So Ginnem did.

Back home in rift-valley, meanwhile, something else besides tempers were also flourishing. The stand of thick, wavy rope-grass brought back from distant horizons several years ago, had also begun to expand. Slowly but surely, and without much in the way of aid or attention – new stands followed old ones – and spread. Which was a good thing, most Khortuun agreed. Yes. A good thing. “But why, though,” Matha enquired – her wide features set in patient thought. “I mean, what do we need these plants for again?”

“Look, their stems are as thick as a young boy’s wrist,” Wylla – oldest and wisest – responded. “Surely, you and yours can make something useful of it?” Matha merely nodded – as thoughtful as ever. “Maybe,” she agreed. “Maybe.”

Like ropes, obviously enough. Or new nets. Or…

Fourteenth of Chillwind, Year Thirtyseven of the Reckoning

Alexander's loping stride ate up the miles, his strong sinewy legs moving in near-ceaseless rhythm even as he snuck a drink of fresh river water from his canteen. Sweat beaded his brow, but a smile was on his face; more than an hour ago he had sighted the smoke rising toward the sky that bespoke the approach of Kharbarinth, and from here he could even spy out the Mother Tree. He followed a small track, a game trail that had become familiar to him during the years traveling between the steadings of the Deepkin, his footsteps sure and swift.

Anon the land opened up into the fields, and the game trail became a path in truth, dirt hardened and beaten down by the passage of dozens of feet over the decades. It was not long before he spied a familiar face, Lorik loping along the path to join him. Alexander's advance slackened, and he waved to the other man while drinking in deep breaths to sate heaving lungs. The warrior came up as he was still catching his wind, and grinned in a fond manner at Alexander's wheezing gasps.

"All those miles you run, and for how swift you were as a child, and I would think the journey from Stalheim would bother you little."

The scout's shoulders went up and down in a noncommittal shrug. It was a fair distance for any man, to run for months along the line of the Great River, camping beneath the stars and always following the ribbon of blue and green westward. There were wide leagues where there were no more signs of human habitation than any other region of wild country upon the Father's earth.

"Come along then. It is nearly sundown, and your time is impeccable - there is to be a feast tonight."

With a more sedate walk, still swift, Alexander and Lorik set off for the village. The keen strung bow that the warrior carried would have been a cause for curiosity if the rest of the men and women of Stalheim had ventured here, but Alexander took it in stride; his contact with the rest of the Deepkin, and thus his knowledge of their aspirations and ambitions, was better than most. That did not mean he knew everything though, as he soon discovered after passing the low gate of the palisade.

A sweet smell filled the air, one he could not place. It came from the cooking stones near the fire where at least a half dozen figure were gathered, men and women who welcomed the sojourner and pestered him immediately for news of their relatives and offspring who had left nearly a decade ago for the rich confluence of the Black and White Rivers, fair Stalheim. Good manners meant that even the famished scout had to put aside eating for at least a few minutes, telling all there was to tell - of Tanya's new boy, and the gleaming bushels of lustrous iron chiseled from the silver mountain. Eventually, however, he could wait no longer.

"I must know. What is the delicious smell? My body is faint with hunger, and it torments me."

Indolent eyes and quiet laughter followed Alexander's question. Natalya, one of the elders, picked up one of what the scout had taken to be oddly shaped rocks near the fire, which was beginning to burn low. She broke it, with apparent ease, and passed him a portion. It was soft, almost spongy, and was flecked with bits of charred... something, which the scout's nose swiftly identified as bison cooked in fat. A cautious bite, and then Alexander's eyes lit with enjoyment. It was sweet, and soft, and filling all at once. Much better than trail-jerky or gleaned grain.

"We call it bread." said one of the workers, and Alexander immediately asked for another portion, to the bemusement of the assembled kinsmen.

Jarn (Scholar) yet continues his attentions upon the amber barley, which grows in small numbers near Kharbarinth. An exotic crop, he seeks to understand how it grows and what it may be used for.
Maria (Scholar) turns her attention to the boat she has heard Mikhael is working on in Stalheim. A small canoe, burnt from a tree's husk, could greatly aid transit there.
Anna (Scholar) as yet continues his work refining methods of smithing the barans tools, to hold a better point and lose less strength in the reforging
Adrius (Scholar) chants and cuts runes into liquid copper, placing stones with luminous sunset skins in the fields of blueberries to hold enchantment there
Emilia (Scholar) continues seeking after symbols of health and good humor, to ward men against disease and injury
Petyor (Warrior) trains under Lorik, learning his spear-dance
Gunnar (Warrior) trains under Lorik, the better to spill hot crimson blood of foul men
Lorik (Warrior) drills the other warriors
Adorjan (Warrior) hunts in the fields while the other warriors train with Lorik, bearing bow and keen bronze blade
Varya (Worker) sets fires to break copper ore, then crushes the remainder with her heavy sledgehammer for gathering
Istvan (Worker) steams and refines the Healer's Hand, to make poultices as guard against illness
Natalya (Worker) grinds and crushes einkorn into fair brown flour
Cynthia (Worker) mixes flour and water and strips of meat, to create sweet-smelling loaves for hungry mouths
Turol (Worker) cuts squashes and einkorn with his sickle, harvesting food for all
Valerie (Worker) harvests and tends crops, sickle in hand
Ulf (Worker) harvests and cuts food from the fields, sickle in hand
Laika (Scout) ventures north of northeast, spying out the lands there for other men
Vanka (Worker Aspirant) watches how buildings are erected
Maria (Worker Aspirant) sees how crops blossom in the fields
Bella (Warrior Aspirant) watches the men as they spar
2 Children
Adrius and Natalya are wishing to expand their family
Gunnar and Cynthia seek children
Anya and Ulf seek progeny
Turol and Valerie are making a lineage for their own

Mikhael (Scholar) further anon still as yet continues his work with wood, hollowing out a mighty fallen tree with fire and axe to ride the currents
Ivan (Warrior) hunts the wild pigs of this land, bearing bow and knife
Tanya (Worker) takes a sickle to the new stand of Healer's Hand, tending it and gathering cuttings for medicine
2 Children

Nirari Tribe
Lands of the Cherry Blossom, Habitation Year 3

Finally, after all the work he had put into it over his lifetime, Isrid was able to show his family how to craft a new composite bow. He passed it on to Anku saying, "This is the weapon my ancestors bore. I have discovered how to recreate them. Our children will wield them." The following day, Isrid began a new project as he was watching the Cherry Blossoms fall from the trees. There had been many strange things that they had seen and the implications. A flow in the air, the pulse of the land and the plants. He knew that this would be a project for most of the rest of his life. Interruptions for what the tribe deemed to be more important, but he wanted to bring an understanding of nature and the natural world's inner workings to his tribe.

The Pennenthelli

New faces and new friends, or at least that is what the Pennenthelli hoped would come from these Riverfolk of the north. Luckily, their languages had been similar and they quickly managed to find a way to communicate with similar words and when that failed, speaking slowly and using many hand gestures had to do the trick. Nonetheless, they managed to understand that these Riverfolk were a tribe in the north who, unlike the Pennenthelli had found a way to sustain themselves primarily through growing food such as yellow colored maize and red vegetables like the Pennenthelli had once tried to cultivate the red Sweetberries of these lands before returning to a lifestyle of hunting, fishing and gathering as other work took priority over tending the berry-planting which had withered and died come winter many years ago. However Avunan saw the wisdom in growing food close to home, then the tribe's fighters wouldn't have to range across the land so much and spend more time going out and exploring the surrounding lands, perhaps finding wanderers or other tribes that they could contact, be that friendly or not, that did not matter much, what mattered was that they found more people around them, what was to be done could wait, but not for too long...

Of course, the newcomers were curious about the Pennenthelli as well, the Riverlander explorers quickly remarked on their many dwellings and looked with some concern upon their large number of weapons, Avunan tried to reassure them that these were very needed as the Pennenthelli got much of their food through hunting across the plains and woodland copses. Of course, talk soon turned to many things, how the two peoples could help each other. The Riverlanders were fascinated with the bows of the Pennethelli, able to strike down pray across long distances, Avunan offered to share the knowledge, but only in exchange of the Riverlanders sharing the secrets of growing food. Fishing for subtle clues in the conversation, the Pennenthelli could soon deduce the Riverlanders did not have much in the way of weaponry, so Avunan offered another trade, not of knowledge but of goods. The Pennenthelli would give the Riverlanders some of their spears and the sling, the spears would soon be replaced by those made of Sundrop metal and slings were easy to produce. In exchange, he wanted some of those yellow things the Riverlanders seemingly ate and grew in great abundance.
