The Pennenthelli

Another new year had gone by in this new homeland of the Pennenthelli, a year where the chieftain turned his eyes skyward, to the home of the Gods and the spirits. He wondered if some part of them, of their vitality was draining in order to feed such abundant life into this land of plentiful food that they now occupied, could it be? Were they paying for this bounty with a lack of healthy and numerous Pennenthelli offspring to carry their deeds into the future? Was there some evil at work? An evil which had claimed his daughter, which had almost claimed his beloved bondmate? He had to act, now, well as it stood there would not be much to pass a legacy to other than his little son who seemed to already grow the sharp, inquisitive mind of his parents and Henimen's boy Ronan, who was only a few winters from being a man grown, already having the tell-tale mindset and physique of a strong warrior and swift hunter. One night, he enlisted his beloved Kath and the nimble-fingered Lato to his work. Both him and Kathildra painted their faces with ash from the fire and called upon the Earth-Mother in prayer while Latozar had to put the work on another spear aside för this year, instead carving a statue of the Earth-Mother out of wood as the two scholars did their best to consecrate it and call upon the goddess to bless the tribe with fertility, healthy children and healthy mothers.

Avunan (Scholar - M - 31): Carves and raises a statue of the Earth-Mother, consecrating it and asking the goddess to bless the tribe with fertility, making it easier to have children.
Kathildra (Scholar - F - 30 ): Helps her bondmate Avunan to make and consecrate a holy statue of the Earth-Mother so she blesses the tribe with fertility, giving them healthy children and letting their births be safer.
Henimen (Warrior - M - 32): Hunting in the plains with Jenwin armed with a spear, knife and bow.
Jenwin (Scout - F - 31): Hunting in the plains with Henimen armed with a bow and knife. If gets pregnant, stops hunting and forages with the knife and basket instead.
Latozar (Worker - M - 31): Helps Avunan and Kathildra to carve a small wooden statue of the Earth-Mother using his axe and knife.
Ronan (Kid - M - 13): Practices hunting with a sling under the eye of his parents, being taught the culture and faith of his people.
Ahleth (Kid - M - 7): Doing kid things, asking his parents millions of annoying questions, being watched over by the adults.

Avunan and Kathildra try for a baby.
Henimen and Jenwin try for a baby.

Jungles of Lo

The dangers of the jungle made itself know for the pass generation. The children grew in splendor and with food. Even with the disease that hit them Tes'a have blessed them. Another work towards the shrine. The very essence of life still grew in the people of the Lightning God. To them, this was a testimony of their servitude and understanding to the idea of their god and the energy of life.

The shrine became a major priority to them as they set to build it in the name of their god. In fervor to the storms and the very aspect of the island they were on. All that they have to worship in the name of Tes'la.

Lu and Bo continue building the lighting rod shrine
Ing and Manu hunt Child Birds
Manu collects breadfruit
The children help build the lightning rod shrine and are being taught the myth of Tes'la and the prayers to blessing food and the new shrine
The infant is being watched over.

Sons of Corvus, Year 16

As expected, there is not quite enough to go around this year. The children do their best, but their little hands are simply incapable of providing the harvest necessary to sustain the burgeoning population of their tribe. Additionally, Juna's extra rations exacerbate the problem, and Corvin and Cavon grow thin and weak. Corvin is a strong man, mostly sinew and muscle, and his fitness acquired from a decade of successful hunts allows him to sustain through the difficult period.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Cavon. He slips into a fever, babbling incoherent messages from the spirits and his dreams. Juna quickly recovers, though, ready to provide for the tribe once again. Corvin thanks his ancestors (and deceased wife) for their blessings in this regard, and he showers blessings upon Juna for her swift recovery.

Despite their struggles, there is a great celebration among the tribe this year. Corvan, son of Corvin, has come into manhood this year. As a rite of passage, Cavon, despite his delirium, paints two stripes down his face with a simple facepaint (a mix of red topsoil and water) and blesses him. Corvan is then given the tribe's sling and a sharpened stake by his father, and sent alone into the fields to return with a successful kill. It is a risky venture, considering their lean year - but Corvin insists that this is necessary to walk among the ancestral spirits as a man, instead of a child. Corvan is a brave young man, though he has a rather sullen and bitter personality, likely stemming from the loss of his mother. These years of hardship have shaped him to be rather hotheaded, but with such recklessness comes foolish courage.

It is a tense few days among the tribe as they await his return. However, this rite does not come with tragedy - Casa's spirit clearly watches over him and protects him from harm, and his years of practice with the sling come to clear fruition. His childhood friend and cousin, Juvon, is the first to spot him. As he plucks seeds from the wheat planting he and his father established, he hears the yipping and howling of the kin-spirited wolves as they smell fresh meat. Corvan emerges from the endless tide of wheat in the distance, bearing the remains of a gazelle slung over his shoulders. The tribe rejoices upon his arrival, praising his strength and courage. Despite his dour mind, a rare smile emerges upon Corvan's face. He has proven himself worthy - and someday, he will be chieftain.

Things are beginning to look up for the sons of Corvus, however. The children grow close to maturity, and once they contribute like adults, some of the great and endless stream of possibilities in Cavon's mind may come to fruition. The first being the establishment of the wheat planting. Though it is small now, one day it will be enormous, and they will never hunger again.

Ceston's journey out into the plains brings him into a strange landscape, filled with two marvels.

The first of these marvels are the immense creatures which stomp along the landscape, creating craters with their steps. They are living hills, creatures with enormous shells beyond anyone's belief. Nearly the height of ten men, surely! Why, if he were to return home and speak of these, they would laugh at him! And yet, these things exist nonetheless. Ceston names them Greatshells, and is careful to avoid incurring their wrath. They seem to feed upon the grain and grass of the fields, similar to the colored birds flitting among the landscape. Thankfully, they are not particularly interested in Ceston, and he brushes by them without much incident.

Greater still than the Greatshells, however, is the discovery of signs of life! Ashes dot the landscape, the remnants of old campfires, along with lightly beaten paths and broken shards of tools. Humanity other than himself truly does lurk this world - and it appears that they have traveled South. Though he intended to turn back and head home after this year's travel, he finds himself unable to do so. The allure of others calls to him too strongly, and he races South, attempting to catch the people who left these remains.

Corvin (M, Warrior, 36) continues to hunt gazelle with the Sling and the pack.
Corvan (M, Warrior, 14) goes on the hunt with his father. He is a man now, and near as good a shot as his father with the sling these days.
Cavon (M, Scholar, 34, Ill) rests in the dugout and does not labor this year.
Juvon (M, Scholar Trainee, 13) gathers wheat from the planting.
Juna (F, Worker, 34) gathers wheat from the small planting with her son.
Ceston (M, Scout, 30) scouts (South 5), searching for the people who departed these lands.
Janon (M, Worker Trainee, 11) gathers yams. He leads the children, learning to direct his younger brothers and sisters effectively.
Jana (F, Worker Trainee, 9) gathers yams.
Lupen (M, Scholar Trainee, 7) gathers yams. He and Lopen are troublesome children, often bickering and causing a ruckus.
Lopen (M, Worker Trainee, 7) gathers yams. He and Lupen are inseparable, two extensions of the same mind.
Cara (F, Worker Trainee, 6) gathers yams.

[b]The Nirari Tribe
The Golden Woods, Habitation Year 3

The discovery of a tribe up the river two years prior has given the Nirari tribe the motivation to further investigate these people. Lilitu was finally given the permission she wanted, to go and investigate the settled peoples on that land. She was also instructed, if she found it safe enough, to make contact with the tribe there. It was a big moment, the first tribe which the Nirari had encountered in a very long time. If the tribe seemed to be less than friendly, the Nirari could move away or they could raid the tribe for resources if required. While Niun and Lilitu preferred to trade, the two of them both knew how to fight for the tribe's future and thus how to quickly attack and kill their foes, typically prey animals, but in this case it would have to be the other tribe.

Closer to home, Niun takes the youngest child with him on the hunting trips. The youngster had taken a liking to the weaponry and hunting that his father took part in, and with his mother frequently away exploring new lands for the tribe, young Varys took after his father quickly. While they hunted, Isrid continued to study his father's weapon in an attempt to discover how to create a new bow for his younger brother to join his father hunting. He was growing further and hoped to be able to figure this out as quickly as he could. He wanted to be able to show the rest of the tribe that his chosen path was just as useful as his twin's collecting food for the tribe.

Niun - Male (29) Warrior(composite Bow, Bone spear): Hunts for Food and Hides
Lilitu - Female (28) Scout(composite bow, Bone Spear): Explores to the Northeast again, to make observations of the people living there.
Melein - Female (30) Worker:
Isrid - Male (10) Child - Learning to be a Scholar, observes the bows the tribe has crafted and seeks to make tools of the same function (Research archery)
Tyris - Male (10) Child - Learning to be a worker, Gathering Chestnuts for food
Varys - Male (7) Child - Learning to be a warrior, Follows Niun on his hunts, aiding him where possible.

Twenty-Second of Springtide, Year Sixteen of the Reckoning

Maria smiled at the young girl before her - no, the young woman. Her hair was no longer the blonde of youth, in truth it hadn't been for years, but a mother's eyes always saw further into the past than those of others. With considered movements she tied the banded necklace around Natalya's neck, bearing small fragments of the redstone of the tribe's river, and larger copper ornaments. It was a more flashy decoration than she or Varya wore, theirs being of simple honed flint and tumbled rocks of the seaside, but she did not begrudge her daughter such ostentation. The delicacy of the display spoke to the prosperity that now touched the tribe, and spoke of better times to come.

Better times that were hoped for, that was. As most ceremonies of the Deepkin were, the elevation of Natalya was celebrated by feasting. The menfolk and women, even the children, ate well and made merry long into the night beneath the branches of the Mother Tree. Only Jarn was not as happy as he could have been, for the news from Sylvia out of the east worried him. Men with no banners, men with cruel weapons and faces painted red, were a threat to all the tribe had created here. Only Petyor was a warrior of any great repute, though all of them could fight with spear and club after a fashion. The light palisade around the tribe would not hold for long if men came against it in force, and they had neither the ability nor the inclination to store food long enough to see off a determined attacker.

Measures would have to be taken to protect the Kindred against these wild men. Exactly what these measures were to be - ah, this question kept Jarn up long into the night, much later than the rest of the tribe, who celebrated against lean times to come.

Jarn (Scholar) sets to work on a method of flinging light spears a great distance, through the power of sinew and cord
Maria (Scholar) studies how heat and cool interact with the foodstuffs of the tribe, and how grain might be held against rot
Petyor (Warrior) hunts the mighty bison, wielding atlatl and blade
Varya (Worker) hammers and beats the raw copper, shaping sickles for the harvest
Istvan (Worker) labors in the fields, tending and harvesting the crops with his new sickle
Natalya (Worker) hunts alongside Petyor, wielding a keen spear and blade
Sylvia (Scout) heads back north, seeking beyond the northern spaces for allies against the barbarians beyond the forest
Tanya (Worker Aspirant) observes Varya's keen strokes upon the metal and how it is shaped
Ivan (Warrior Aspirant) practices forms with spear and axe, to fell the foes of his folk
Anna (Scholar Aspirant) observes Jarn's methodical study of sinew and cord, of their properties and follies
Alexsander (Scout Aspirant) practices moving silently through the forests
Gunnar (Warrior Aspirant) spars with Ivan to build muscle and skill
4 Children
Istvan and Sylvia are seeking a child

Machaka
Age of Mythos, Dawn of Man

Varrus travelled farther east into the lands, he saw the smoke rise from, a sign of life. However, he did not expect the unfriendly nature of the environment. As trees began from mere dozens, began to become countless. The rolling grasslands began to be concealed by a dense blanket of forestry. The relatively peaceful hoofed beasts were replaced by hairier many legged monstrosities.

As Varrus carefully avoided the dense strings that dotted the forest as well as its blackened beasts, whether eight legged or four legged, he eventually found the life that he sought after. A small village reminiscent of his times in the mountainlands. He approached carefully, hoping not to cause alarm, and perhaps to locate the chieftain of the village. He attempted to communicate hoping that someone could understand his peoples tongue.

There were no leaders as of current, as the tribe of Machaka knew their roles well, and did not need a figure to lead them as such. Azikiwe, the aging warrior, a well-built black man, spotted the coming visitor, as he readied himself for another hunt. The warrior walked up to the man, noticing his lighter tone of skin, compared to Azikiwe. The warrior grunted, saying what was his business here, or among those lines.

Varrus begins to introduce himself. Describing to Azikiwe his name, and his origins. He then proceeds to explain his purpose, to trade and bargain to the tribe. Hoping to obtain some hides for his fellow nomads on the wide plains. Hoping to strike a bargain that could benefit both groups involved.

There were plenty of hides within the tribe of Machaka, Azikiwe noted. The warrior pointed to the stacks of white panther furs that were laying on the dirt ground, a recent skinning from his last hunt. The tribe likely had no issue in trading in some of their hides for whatever this trader had in his stores, which begs the question. What does Varrus had to offer in exchange for these skins?

Varrus then went on to explain that while his people weren’t rich in resources, they know of good hunting grounds. Noting that he knows of land where beasts are docile, and the plants provide sustenance of those who wish to live off the land. Going on to explain that while he could not very much trade the food himself, he can provide information to those who were interested in benefiting off it themselves.

Food? Azikiwe asked. There was not much that grows here in this forest, maybe a few herbs, berries, and other eatables, but nothing that commonly grows here. The warrior asked about the location of the foodstuffs. He would be happy to trade in his hides for such info. Besides, there were no scouts in the tribe either. So, knowing of the outside world would be greatly appreciated.

Varrus, seeing that the negotiations are going well so far, adds that he would also be willing to help out at whatever hunts or collecting they need from the region to help them to become familiar with the land. In exchange, hoping for 6 hides to bring home to his people. Hoping that the costly amount of hides is equal or on par to that of aid and information of the land.

Azikiwe nodded to this agreement. The warrior states that his tribe can’t bring the hides to the trader’s lot, and that Varrus will need to carry the hides on his own, due to the busy nature of the Machakan tribe. Besides from that, Azikiwe has no other issue with this trade, as long Varrus could bring back vital info of this land with food.

Azikiwe walks himself back to the tribe, asking Tambo if he wants to go with their visitor. Tambo denies the offer, being too busy gathering foodstuffs. The warrior then goes to Rashid, asking the same offer. Rashid accepts, gathering up the furs along with Varrus, and heading towards the nomad tribe.

Huanca

Misfortune has come to the Huanca. Ynti did not realize how much she was important to the tribe's food supply when she left to explore once more. While she did see sights that eased her wanderlust. Ynti is staying with the tribe during this troubled time and for the seeable future until everyone is well again. Koyakusi would have been ecstatic about his discovery about the potato after years of study but, with the tribe starving and unwell. That takes priority and while Ninan stops building the hut to take on Jaylli's duties. Koyakusi takes up the task to tending to both Jaylli and Sandsong. Ensuring within his abilities to make sure that they get better. Hopefully with Ynti back hunting and Ninan taking on Jaylli's duties. The food situation will get better if not then. Koyakusi prays to the gods at the shrine in his free time. Hoping that things will get better and not worse. But, that remains to be seen, and hope only goes so far.

Koyakusi(M, Scholar,35) - takes care of Jaylli and Sandsong
Achik (M, Warrior, 36) - Hunt alpacas for food and cares for Inkaurqu, Mallku and Anku
Jaylli (M, Worker, 35) - Rests
Ninan (F, Worker, 37) - Collects potatoes, tends to the farm and cares for Inkaurqu, Mallku, and Anku
Ynti (F, Scout, 34) - Helps Achik hunt and care for Taruka
Inkaurqu (F, Child, 9) - Learning to be a worker from Ninan and helps Ninan collect potatoes and tend to the farm
Mallku (F, Toddler, 6) - Helping Achik hunt and learn the ways of the warrior from Achik
Taruka (M, Toddler, 5) - Being a toddler
Anku (F, Toddler, 3) - Being a toddler
Sandsong(F, Scholar, 15) - Rests

The River Folk, at the Mouth of the Riverlands

No luck came to the tribe these past turnings, sadly. Despite their fine new blades, Varin returning to his duties led to a shortfall during the cold Turning. Everyone was still healthy, though, and so work continued in earnest - this time with the young Anduin aiding in the gathering efforts. The scholars pressed on with their investigation of the flowers graced with the sun's light, convinced that they have properties greater than what meets the eye.

Magnus (M, Scholar) - Investigating the golden flowers that grow here and to the west, to see if they have any uses or special traits. (Researching Sundrop Flower Comprehension)
Eliana (F, Scholar) - Investigating the golden flowers that grow here and to the west, to see if they have any uses or special traits. (Researching Sundrop Flower Comprehension)
Katrina (F, Worker) - Gathering food for the clan, a mix of maize and any other edibles available, now using a gleaming orange blade. (Gathering Food - Equipped With Copper Work-Blade)
Bronwen (M, Worker) - Tending to the maize planting, caring for it and letting it grow. He now uses the Selective Harvesting method taught by Magnus, hoping to improve the crop over time. (Tending Maize Planting)
Varin (M, Scout) - Journeying out further along the river that the Folk call home, to see where among the lands beyond it roams. (Exploring South Region)
Fiona (F, Youth) - Helping her mother Katrina gathering, learning the best ways to harvest maize. (Gathering Food - Equipped With Copper Work-Blade)
Anduin (M, Youth) - Helping his clanmates to gather food for the tribe. (Gathering Food)
Prudence (F, Infant) - Doing baby things.

Both couples try for a child.

It was a good year so far, as good as could be expected for the Aederfolk. No gruesome deaths, no war with other tribes, no fuss, no muss. The tribe had advanced quite far since they'd found themselves stuck together in this place, for all intents and purposes things had gotten better. But in their wisdom, they knew that all good things must come to an end, and the idyllic peacefulness of their scrap of dirt would be no different. Sooner or later something would change, it just mattered that they were prepared.

Thrunnos hefted the spear, feeling the slightly adjusted weight in his hand as he considered the object; Flint cut much cleaner than solely bone, but not well enough. They could not pierce the skulls of the mammoth with a single jab yet, but it still served its master. Just as the Hesukar served theirs, ever faithfully. Before the tribe had begun their migration, Kulbathos had offered another yearling to the Dark Gods, wetting the cracked stone of their altar with beast blood. The altar stood still in their wake; eventually they would return here, and if Kulbathos’ seersight proved true, they would be making sacrifice of far greater value. The sacrifice of Man.

The tribe migrates to the warm plains south of their original region (Warm southland explored by Thrunnos).

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 16

Aᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ ʜᴏʟᴇ,
ᴀɴɪᴍᴀʟs ᴏ̨ᴜᴇɴᴄʜɪɴɢ ᴛʜᴇɪʀ ᴛʜɪʀsᴛ,
ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ ғᴏʀ ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀ.

Harro (Male, 36, Scout) hunts with his woven-grass net this year – but also scouts! Not for new lands and distant horizons, but rather the tracks of tall, cantankerous hump-beasts.
Kadima (Female, 36, Warrior) hunts – flint spear to hand - whatever creeps and crawls.
Yantewe (Male, 14, Warrior) hunts, well-armed with the tribe’s only sling, to make bird and lizard unsafe indeed.

Wylla (Female, 37, Scholar) returns, this year, to an old mystery: the puss-yellow ore of the northern rift-valley. Armed with a flint work-blade, she will bring some home and study its secrets.
Zebas (Male, 34, Scholar) joins his mate in pondering the mystery of the flaky, yellow ore of the northern vale. What benefit could it possibly be to the Khortuun?
Seypelli (Male, 14, Scholar) joins his parents on their brief outing north – to ponder with them the mysteries of the yellow ore.

Matha (Female, 35, Worker) tends, as always, to the bean plot, and uses a work-blade to fashions slings in her spare time.
Ohan (Male, 15, Worker) twists hides and grasses into usable ropes this year. And if some time should remain to him, he tends also to a fresh planting of fat, fleshy mushrooms.

Ykka (Female, 9) twists grasses into crude bracelets and ties her hair into wild, whorly knot-braids.
Ginnem (Male, 3) prattles, bawls and sings songs of mischievous spirits.

Seasons come, seasons go...

There is an unfamiliar rumbling that crosses the lands of the Aederfolk this year, during the spring - the immense lumbering hills of the north, the Greatshells, are migrating through their homes. Dozens of moving mountains trudge across the land, crushing trees, forests, and anything else in their way underfoot. They are coming out of the north and heading south. This may be an opportunity for hunting the mighty beasts, or simply trying to avoid coming to harm.

Warclyfe: The people of Tes'la eat well, and the shrine is rising slowly. With their limited amounts of copper exhausted they are forced to gather more, but they are staunch in their efforts.

Deepkin: The Deepkin have ample food to eat. Varya has forged two more sickles for the tribe, and the einkorn and squash plantings of the tribe are expanding, well-tended, ensuring the sickles will be of great use. Istvan and Sylvia welcome a son to their family come autumn.

Maria's studies have swiftly concluded, observing how food stored away from water and the ground and heat rots slower, and that which is only rarely exposed to sunlight and warm air lasts the longest. This insight will no doubt be valuable in future endeavors, and she theorizes efforts could be made to store their take away from these factors to ensure the stability of their meals. Not all foodstuffs will be fit for this - certainly not fresh fruits and vegetables, who rot in days - but perhaps the grains they utilize may stand such treatment.

North of north Sylvia roams, out into wide plains beyond the forest. To the north and the east the plains continue, while away west the forest is noticeable. This land has strange deposits of dun gray ore, dark brown mushrooms that grow in the hollows of the plains, and boars roam here.

The Corvidians: Despite Cavon's rest, there is ample food for all to eat this year - another hunter a great gift to the bellies of the tribe. Cavon's illness unfortunately persists despite the large amount of food the tribe leaves for him, a delirium which proves stubborn. There is good news also, for the wolf-pack of kin-spirits that aid the tribe has had a large litter of puppies.

In the distant south, Ceston enters a wide country, verdant plains familiar to him. The mountains rise to the west, and south there seem to be yet further plains, while away to the direction of the setting sun the plains give way to wide expanses of an unfamiliar coarse dirt which he does not recognize. This land is still haunted by the Greatshells he encountered further north, but orange grains grow here unlike the golden wheat of his homeland, and strange fruits decorate bushes that seem to glow with an inner fire. The trail of people has grown very fresh here, and he espies footsteps near a pond that cannot be more than a few years old.

The Aederfolk: The tribe eats well on plentiful kills and the sweetreed.

West of west Pywll ranges, up into the high mountains there. All about him the peaks soar, in every direction marching away into the distance. His journey is shadowed by great birds, each seemingly as large as a village, which nest upon the highest peaks with glittering wings of bronze. Black obsidian decorates the cliff faces here, and the small mountain streams that fall from the heights are laced with black sand.

Khortuun: The tribe has more than enough to eat this year, though not so much that more would go amiss. The growing bodies and bellies of the expanding tribe no longer eat as mere children, but require more sustenance, enough as to shock their parents. Of the hump-beasts, Harro finds no sign, their migration obviously having departed into the west rather consummately. Two fat lizards, though, he captures with his net. Wylla has returned home with some of the yellow ore, and Matha and Ohan prepared a sling and some rope, though the mysteries of how it is the mushrooms actually grow have eluded them. Fortune smiles upon the tribe, however, for the bean planting is expanding.

The Machaka: There would have been a shortfall of food this year - but for the wisdom of the tribe in smoking their kills the year before. This underlines the importance of finding new sources of sustenance than scrabbling for the gleanings of the forest and the occasional kill. The small smokehouse, build of furs stretched over long bones, is coming along nicely.

The Huanca: Despite the best efforts of the tribe, there is only barely enough food for all to have their fill this year. Sandsong's condition is worsening, a deep cough moving down into her chest, though Jaylli has overcome the illness and is soon well enough again to be able to work. Ninan's attempts to re-establish their potato planting have been put on hold, after she realizes they will need all the wild potatoes she can gather just to avoid hunger.

The Huang: The Huang eat well this year, feasting on ample food from the bosom of the water-buffalo and silverfish. No children, unfortunately, grace the tribe.

A small planting of the jade-grass has been prepared in the waters near the tribe, and the Huang scholars feel confident that they understand the soils, light, and general principles encouraging artificial growth entails. This will lead to birth of much useful labor for their kinsmen.

The Riverlanders: This year there is enough for the whole tribe to have enough to eat, barely. No children are born this year.

The sundrop flowers the tribe now understands - they have no apparent properties, or at least this seems to be the case for a long time. However eventually the scholars notice that the flowers have a small inner reservoir, which holds a thick cordial, warm and orange in color. Harvesting this liquid is time-consuming in the extreme, but a single mouthful fills a man with energy as if it were a meal, and drives all cold of winter from his body for many hours.

South of the Riverlands, the country grows wide and still and flat. In all directions the seemingly endless plains roll. Bright red fruits grow on low vines in this country, small but flavorful, and the familiar oaks of their homeland continue south in scattered copses. Thick carpets of fragrant green leaves cover this land, resplendent in pale purple flowers.

The Pennenthelli: The tribe eats well this year, with there being ample food for all. Perhaps the spirits have heard the plea, and look with favor upon the statue the tribe has graven, for Jenwin is pregnant before the statue is even completed. Her labor, however, speaks perhaps of their displeasure at being mistrusted. The boy comes forth easily enough, but the mother's bleeding after his egress is long and difficult to staunch, and leaves her very weak, barely clinging to life.

The Nirari Band: The band eats well, and awaits word of Lilitu's return. Isrid appears to be growing frustrated, with none of the tribe being of the correct mindset to teach him the ways of introspection and natural philosophy. No doubt this will be a setback, but overcome in time.

It is a mystery, the ancestral weapons handed down in the band. The Nirari cannot replicate the strange mottled complicated construction of their own weapons, but after much study they manage to create simpler, less powerful versions of the weapon, carved carefully from young heartwood of trees and strung with sinew.

The Saladonian Band: The Saladonians eat well enough, and profit greatly from the new amount of hides they have received, which will no doubt be a useful boon.

The Hesukar Band: Over the hills and dales the Hesukar pass, out into the wide open country so different from their frozen northern home. They leave behind the great herds of mammoths, but not the fierce cave lions, who hunt still in this land. They appear to prey on fierce cattle that roam this country, their horns as long as a man's arm. Also to be found here is beautiful native copper, the color of frozen sunset. To both east and south great warm forests crowd in about the landscape, and away west march colder woodlands with which they are familiar.

The Palapa Band: The band finally staying in one place, they eat well in relative comfort. Airjaya's journey takes him to the coast of a great sundering sea, beyond the steaming jungles of their land. It is soon clear that the sea is far too wide to swim, and there is nothing of great interest to be seen here save sand, and seashells. Two new foals have been born to the horse herd this year, and a beautiful baby boy to Bhagyaputri, though the child is born weak.

So ends the account of the sixteenth year, and now another year begins...

Nirari Tribe
The Golden Woods, Habitation Year 4

The Woodlands are quiet this year as Lilitu does not yet return. Niun is worried about her and wishes to investigate, however, if he leaves to do so, he risks whatever dangers befell her. Perhaps the tribe in the northwest is not as friendly as they had hoped. If that is the case, they would need to begin preparations to move if Lilitu does not return this year. However, the surprise that Isrid was able to show his mother how to create a simple bow was such an amazing task that he has gained a great deal of prestige within the tribe. Melein immediately starts working to craft one of these lesser bows for their young warrior to be.

For his training this year, Varys goes out with Niun again on a hunt, taking several animals down and Niun shows Varys how and where to hit the creatures with a bow to best kill them and prevent them from escaping. He shows him how to care for and maintain the bow and its arrows. He even entrusts him with one of the spears they had crafted previously to help him with his learning. Meanwhile, Tyris and Isrid remained at the camp for the most part, with Isrid turning from his bow research to the tribe's tools. He decides that if they had sharper and more refined way of shaping stone, their arrows, knives, and other cutting implements would be improved.

Niun - Male (30) Warrior(composite Bow, Bone spear): Hunts for Food and Hides
Lilitu - Female (29) Scout(composite bow, Bone Spear): [Explores to the Northwest again, to make observations of the people living there.] - Missing?
Melein - Female (31) Worker: Crafts Bows for the tribe
Isrid - Male (11) Child - Learning to be a Scholar, researching advanced flintknapping.
Tyris - Male (11) Child - Learning to be a worker, Gathering Flint for Isrid to work with.
Varys - Male (8) Child (bone spear) - Learning to be a warrior, Follows Niun on his hunts, aiding him where possible.

The Sons of Corvus:

Finally, prosperity once again reaches the small settlement of Corvus. Casa, the Spirit Goddess of the Harvest, has smiled upon them. Though she is no longer there to aid them in person, her spirit clearly blesses them with bountiful gifts. They do not hunger this year, as a result of the many helping hands and Corvan's mighty slingstrikes.

Unfortunately, Cavon does not recover this year, though he does not grow worse. Some days, he is lost in delirium and fever. Other days, he is more lucid, and speaks of the wild dreams he has. Though his sickness is harmful for the tribe, he claims that he is accepting of the suffering in exchange for glimpses into the beyond. Corvin, however, fears that someday Cavon will search too far into the dark forest of spirits he speaks of...and never return to the land of the living.

Another child comes of age this year! Juvon reaches his full age this year. However, he will not undergo the same ritual as Corvan. Cavon, on the eve of a particularly good day, claims that Juvon will become a spirit-guide alongside himself. Thus, wandering into the depths of the field to take down prey is not his path. Cavon claims that his ritual is to find a bright spark of an idea and bring it to fruition - to discern the wisdom passed down by the spirits into the mind and to bring it to life. Juvon eagerly begins on a project he has had in mind for a long time - a way of preserving excess bounty from the hunt for following harsher years. He has seen how pieces of meat when dried seem to be edible for longer - perhaps there is a better way to do this!

There is yet another blessing in this good year - the kinspirited wolves have children of their own! The children of the tribe love these adorable puppies, who dart about and yip and squeal for chunks of meat at dinner. Lupen and Lopen in particular have a fondness for them, though Juna warns them not to get nipped by the lively pups. She is still rather cautious around them, but she trusts her husband Cavon about the nature of these animals.

It is a good year for the Corvidians, all in all. The two hunters continue their work, aided by the kinspirits and a sling. Corvan is annoyed at the lack of a sling for himself, but Juna shakes a finger at him. She does not have the time to craft another at the moment - her helping hands are necessary to gather the yams. The children, however, are tasked with expanding the patch of wheat that continues to flourish nearby.

In the distant south, Ceston enters a wide country, verdant plains familiar to him. He is firmly determined, renewed with fresh vigor on his journey. There are signs of life everywhere he looks these days - footsteps around ponds, broken tools, ashes, and bones. These people are closeby, and he is on the verge of finding them. He sprints South, his bounty of precious rocks clattering against one another within their pouch. He nearly completely ignores the different wheat and strange berries around him, completely consumed by his chase.

Interestingly enough, the Greatshells seem to travel with him. Perhaps their mighty spirits sense his excitement, and they slowly trod towards the South alongside his hasty footsteps. Finally, he comes upon it. The river from his dreams. It is a beautiful sapphire stream, shady and calming. Eagerly, he follows along the river and towards the signs of life - and then in a fateful day, he discovers it. He has been travelling for years now, and almost has forgotten the sound of other human voices, but he hears them calling to another. In the distance is a small settlement, with two woven huts poking clearly into the sky in a peaceful clearing.

Ceston is overjoyed, but he is unsure if these people are friendly, or whether they speak the same language. He spends the next few days hunting one of the many deer that prance among the region, before managing to slay one that trips and falls during the chase. He stabs it cleanly through with his sharpened stake and walking stick. With his bounty slung over his shoulder, he enters the encampment. The children scream at the sight of the unfamiliar man. He strikes a much different figure than these people - his long red hair and beard are a strange and unfamiliar sight, and the red fox pelt upon his back and head gives him a strange and unusual appearance. These men have likely never seen one of these creatures before. However, despite his strange and abnormal visage, he opens his arms and hands to these strangers, carrying no weapon. When the adults emerge, he prostrates himself before them with his bounty in his arms, extended as a gift.

They may have a language barrier, but Ceston attempts to do his best to explain that he will aid them for the coming year, in exchange for remaining among their people. He points towards the North from whence he came and then upon himself, and then gestures at the settlement. Hopefully they will understand.

Corvin (M, Warrior, 37) continues to hunt gazelle with the Sling and the pack. He is no longer alone in the fields, as his son runs alongside him with a sharpened stake.
Corvan (M, Warrior, 15) goes on the hunt with his father.
Cavon (M, Scholar, 35, Ill) rests in the dugout and does not labor this year. From time to time, he will help his son with his venture, though only on good days where his health is better. (Research: Smoking, but 1/4 effort).
Juvon (M, Scholar, 14) searches into the secrets of preserving the bounty of the hunt. (Research: Smoking)
Juna (F, Worker, 35) gathers wheat from the small planting, singing and playing with the children who work nearby.
Ceston (M, Scout, 31) scouts (South 6). IF the tribe there accepts his offer of friendship, he spends the season hunting the deer to aid them. IF they are unfriendly, he hides and watches them from the shadows, further scouting out this land.
Janon (M, Worker Trainee, 13) works on expanding the wheat planting. He is an effective foreman, proud and boisterous, with a strong will and meaty arms for such a young man.
Jana (F, Worker Trainee, 11) expands the wheat planting with her brother.
Lupen (M, Scholar Trainee, 8.) works with his brother Juvon on the meat-secret, taking tasty bites whenever Juvon isn't looking. (Research: Smoking)
Lopen (M, Worker Trainee, 8.) works on expanding the wheat planting as well.
Cara (F, Worker Trainee, 7) works on expanding the wheat planting with her cousins.

Cavon gets extra rations to speed along his recovery IF it is a plentiful year. If not, he gets normal rations. If few rations, Cavon/Children > Adults.

A new day dawned in the lands of Zhongguo, and it seemed that things where on the up. No one celebrated though, the winds of change where powerful, and Heaven itself could change the course of the world, thus the Huang worked hard, and tried to increase their prosperity and lot in life. No one, not gods or spirits would bring fourth prosperity or good times, only through their actions, hard work, dedication and diligence could they carve a path of prosperity for themselves and their progeny.Tao,Ming and Tang would work the the jadegrass diligently learning all they could about this illustrious tuber that would allow them to leap to new heights.Tao noticed how some of the tubers where bigger and tastier than others, this intrigued him and he would focus on making the bigger tubers flourish in the planting, collaborating with Ming and Tang on how best to manage the crop.Yan meanwhile looked to the horizons, with the new crop established hopefully she could explore soon. She couldn't wait to see the world outside of Zhongguo once more, and often looked to the horizons a expression of longing on her face has she worked to bring food to feed her people.

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 17

Image

"At the end of the last Ice Age, as the climate warmed up across the world, humans gradually shifted from hunting and gathering to a settled way of life based on farming. In the process, our relationship to the natural world was transformed. From living as a minor part of balanced ecosystem, we start trying to overcome nature, to take control.

In the Western hemisphere, these changes brought a spread of rich grasslands. People had been moving around, hunting gazelles, and gathering the seeds of lentils, chickpeas and wild grasses. But in the new, lusher savanna, gazelles were plentiful, and they tended to stay in one place throughout the year. So the humans settled down with them, and once they did settle, they deliberately collected grass grain still on the stalk. By collecting and sowing the seeds, they almost inadvertently carried out a very early kind of genetic engineering. They slowly created the world’s great staple crops – wheat and barley.

With this more stable life, our ancestors turned to new gods, and they made images which show and celebrate the key elements in their changing universe. Food and power. Worship, sex and love. And the maker of the Lovers’ sculpture was one of these people.

I’m in the manuscript saloon at the Olthenian Museum of Natural History, and most people walk straight past the case that contains the statue of the lovers. Perhaps it’s because from a distance it doesn’t look like very much. It’s a small, muted, grayish stone about the size of a clenched fist. But when you nearer to it, you can see that it’s a couple, seated, their arms and legs wrapped around each other in the closest of embraces. There aren’t any clear facial features, but you know that these two people are looking into each other’s eyes. I think it’s one of the tenderest expressions of love that I know, comparable to the great kissing couples of Brancouzy and Roudain."

-Corto Tiuc, History Now!, Olthenian Public Broadcasting.

Harro (Male, 37, Scout) scouts West this year - across the wild, silty desert flats where cantankerous hump-beasts once roamed.

Kadima (Female, 37, Warrior) hunts – with sling and flint spear - whatever creeps and crawls.
Yantewe (Male, 15, Warrior) hunts, well-armed with sling and woven-grass net, to fill hungry bellies back home.

Wylla (Female, 38, Scholar) maintains her study of the puss-yellow ore. And on a cool, clear night, when the moon is full and silver-pale, she slits the throat of Harro's captured lizards and dances in their blood. To thank the watching spirits for their kindess.
Seypelli (Male, 15, Scholar) joins his parents in their studies. With prying question and prodding tool, wisdom will be his.
Zebas (Male, 35, Scholar) joins his wife in pondering the mystery of the flaky, yellow ore of the northern vale. Does it respond to glowering fire or silvery moonlight?

Matha (Female, 36, Worker) tends, as always, to the bean plot. And fashions a flint spear, in her small moments.
Ohan (Male, 16, Worker) twists hides and grasses into another usable rope this year. And should he find time for it, a fat, hefty flint axe too.

Ykka (Female, 10) twists grasses into crude bracelets and ties her hair into wild, whorly knot-braids.
Ginnem (Male, 4) prattles, bawls and sings songs of mischievous spirits.

Wylla and Zebas try for a child - as does Harro, Matha and Kadima.

The River Folk, at the Mouth of the Riverlands

The Sundrop was an interesting development - a fine liquor that could stave off the cold and fills the stomach. On the warm plains its use seemed minimal, but perhaps they would find a use for it later. In the meantime, the scholars would seek to improve their food situation once more - returning to the fine maize field that filled their bellies, and changed the very crop itself through their selective harvesting and replanting of the stalks. This was their future - this was their life.

Magnus (M, Scholar) - Spending time amongst the maize stalks, researching better ways to help them grow. (Researching Horticulture)
Eliana (F, Scholar) - Spending time amongst the maize stalks, researching better ways to help them grow. (Researching Horticulture)

Bronwen (M, Worker) - Tending to the maize planting, caring for it and letting it grow. He now uses the Selective Harvesting method taught by Magnus, hoping to improve the crop over time. (Tending Maize Planting)
Varin (M, Scout) - Journeying out along the plains, to learn of lands beyond their own. (Exploring Southwest Region)
Fiona (F, Youth) - Helping her mother Katrina gathering, learning the best ways to harvest maize. Her Turning of Growth was coming soon, and she was ready. (Gathering Food - Equipped With Copper Work-Blade)
Anduin (M, Youth) - Helping his clanmates to gather food for the tribe. (Gathering Food)
Prudence (F, Infant) - Doing baby things.

The Pennenthelli

The chieftain knew what the warrior was going through. He had gone through the very same thing a few years ago when his bondmate had been struck by a hard, arduous childbirth. Little Ahleth, his heir and beloved son had been born, nearly claiming Kath's life, seemingly the spirits seemed to want to make sure the Pennenthelli understood that life was a blessing, one that does not come easy into the world, one that must be protected at all costs. They had lost a child, they had almost lost Kath and now they would have to fight in order to save Jen's life. Their entire, if limited arsenal of knowledge would be put to use in order to help the poor ranger, they would do what they had to in order to make sure little Hervath would have a mother growing up. She was so happy when the body came forth hale and hearty with the same dark auburn hair as she had, then the bleeding went on, for days and night and while it had stopped, Jenwin was weakened, pale and gaunt, tossing in the fits of fever and speaking nonsense as the evil spirits took control of her tongue in feverish fits.

"We need to make sure there is enough for everyone to eat, especially Jen. It's fuel for her body to fight the evils nesting within, literally. Worry not. When I'm not with her, Kath is. When I'm sleeping, she'll be by her side treating her. We shall do everything and more to help her."
