The wending waters of the river Elenur glittered brightly in the summer sun. Gwynn stood outside his hut, watching his tribe celebrate Litha, the Summer Solstice. Gwynn stepped out from the threshold and walked into the small crowd that had formed round the fire. Many of them were young, and had yet to have their naming or be considered a man or woman grown. A small shrine to Ard Feainn had been made out of rocks and given a mane of furs. Gwynn reached the effigy and knelt before his shrine. Gwynn said a quiet prayer, kissed his palm, and touched his palm to Ard Feainn's forehead. Gwynn then stood and turned back to his people. There was much to do and eat.

Pywll watched the festivities from afar. He walked along the high dirt banks of the Elenur, covered in reed and pale grass. From up at this height Pywll could watch over the tribe, if anyone approached he would likely be able to see them. Though Pywll doubted anyone would come to do them harm. It was a rare occasion when the Aeder met any other men. Pywll kept walking the banks, the sooner he finished the faster he could join the festivities.

The Pennenthelli

Near a gently wooded part of the riverbank the Pennenthelli struck the poles of their teepees into the ground. A new homeland beckoned, one that the Chieftain hoped was better able to sustain them. The mighty river that flowed through the plains was now next to them, a close friend instead of something they stayed away from, hoping to avoid the hungry maws of the Shadow Serpents lurking within. This was instead a land that would feed them with much greater ease, where their tribe could grow large and strong, or at least that is what the Chieftain hoped as he watched the tribe prepare the new campsite which would be their home for, well... perhaps until the end of their days? But deep down Avunan hoped they could find an even more plentiful land somewhere nearby with even more food ripe for the picking and hunting. Quietly, the chief thanked the Gods for providing them with such a good summer for their journey, when they had ranged across the land a gentle sun warmed them and the plains seemed to put food before them by itself. Now one could only hope that the ones above had not tired of showing them such kindness and good fortune.

With the tribe in good spirits and hopeful, they set about their labors with intensity and energy. Latozar was making new weapons for them to catch the silvery fish which played in the waters of the river and in his spare time he went out to gather food, mostly the sweet red berries which grew in great abundance across the plains. Indeed, it was so much that he often complained about having to go many times as he could only fold his hide clothing to use in order to carry more than a handful of berries at a time, something which put Kathildra's quick mind to work, she sat in camp trying to devise some kind of tool to help Latozar in his foraging. In the meantime Avunan himself walked across the plains, observing the berries and how they grew. He attempted to plant some near the camp and see if he could get them to grow there as well so that they wouldn't have to range out to gather them. In the meantime the strong warrior and his sinewy ranger of a bondmate went out across the plains heavily armed in order to bring meat to roast above the fireplace. A new dawn, a new home, it all filled them with joy and warmth, with faith in a better future.

Avunan (Scholar - M - 29): Attempts to cultivate a planting of the sweet red berries near the camp and find out how to best do so.
Kathildra (Scholar - F - 28 ): Attempts to find out how to weave some baskets to help carry things.
Henimen (Warrior - M - 30): Hunting in the plains with Jenwin armed with a spear, knife and bow.
Jenwin (Scout - F - 29): Hunting in the plains with Henimen armed with a bow and knife. If gets pregnant, stops hunting and forages with the knife instead.
Latozar (Worker - M - 29): Attempts to craft a few bone fishing spears using the axe and a knife and forages for edibles in his spare time.
Ronan (Kid - M - 11): Practices hunting with a sling under the eye of his parents, being taught the culture and faith of his people.
Ahleth (Kid - M - 5): Doing kid things, being watched over by the adults.

Avunan and Kathildra try for a baby.
Henimen and Jenwin try for a baby.

Kulbathos watched Garlok with a stern, hidden pride. In those quiet moments with his companions, when the child laid asleep, curled in the pile of thick-furred hounds, he told his companions of this pride. The boy's skull was long and marked with thick black hair, like his fathers, like all of the Hesukar. He would grow strong and tall, Kulbathos was certain of it; The wicked-whispers of the Dark Gods spoke portents, that Garlok would be favored. The boy would be a man someday, hale and cruel, but that day was far off. For now he was just a boy, but all warriors began somewhere.

Today would be the first of many in Garlok's tutelage.

---------------------------------
Kulbathos (Male Warrior 27) goes mammoth hunting, and starts training Garlok to be a warrior.
Brayva (Female Worker 26) crafts flint-tipped bone spears, and if she has the time, affixes the yearling skull as the centerpiece of the primitive altar.
Thrunnos (Male Warrior 26) assists Kulbathos in hunting, and then explores north for any signs of settlement. Two wolfhounds accompany him.
Garlok (Male Child 5) begins warrior training with Kulbathos.

Additionally, Kulbathos and Brayva try for a child.

Fourteenth of Winter's Breath, Fourteenth Year of the Reckoning

Istvan stooped low, keen fingers gripping the edge of the work blade as he sliced it across the apex of the einkorn. More of the sweet-smelling nutty grains loose, and with his other hand he stuffed them into the pouch at his side. Then he paused, passing the small flint knife from one hand to another, grimacing. His right hand bore pressure welts from where he applied force to the far side of the workblade for the cutting motion, welts which he carefully rubbed with grease each morning, but which still cracked and opened intermittently and painfully.

Beside him Jarn stopped, rising from his similar stoop, and stretching the lower part of his spine. Both men had been at the harvest since before dawn, taking advantage of the cool hours to glean from the waving field of amber grains, but now the toll was beginning to show upon their labor as the sun rode higher up out of the west. It was hard work, work made harder by the small cutting surface each man had to labor with, barely capable of slicing a dozen stalks at a pass.

Jarn was facing a similar problem as his counterpart. One of his palms was bleeding, a blister brought on by the center of the work blade in his hand now opened by continued pressing. For all of the problems and dangers of hunting the mighty bison, this was a conundrum which had not touched the tribe in previous years, one made only apparent now that they took a significant amount of their sustenance from the fields. There must be something that could be done to lessen the burden.

Jarn (Scholar) begins devising a new sort of blade, specifically engineering for reaping the einkorn
Maria (Scholar) continues with her work of formalizing the symbology of the Deepkin
Petyor (Warrior) hunts the mighty bison, wielding atlatl and blade
Varya (Worker) is beating and shaping copper-tipped axes for the tribe
Istvan (Worker) labors in the fields, tending and harvesting the crops with his blade
Sylvia (Scout) has sped east of east, seeking after trade and companions up the river
Natalya (Worker Aspirant) watches how Varya heats and reheats the copper, slowly shaping it
Tanya (Worker Aspirant) follows Istvan in the fields, watching how he tends the squash vines
Ivan (Warrior Aspirant) accompanies Petyor on the hunt, observing the butchering of a kill
Anna (Scholar Aspirant) watches Maria's scrawlings with interest, memorizing the trail-symbols and permutations Maria is devising
Alexsander (Scout Aspirant) is alone this year, roaming the wilderness near the tribe and learning of the signs of bird and beast
4 Children
Varya and Petyor are seeking a child
Jarn and Maria are seeking a child

Palapa

In the tropical paradise, there lives a currently nomadic tribe, who named themselves the Palapa people. The word itself comes from a story about how the tribe came here in the first place, which has now spanned a single generation.

Once, the tribe was part of a larger one who lived in the land up north. They were a relatively small, but prosperous tribe. However, in a particular year that happened many day cycles ago, disasters struck the land at an abnormal rate. Constant flooding swept away the people living there, as well as their belongings. Then, the earth started to shake with rifts opening, swallowing anything unlucky enough to be above them. Once the devastation was over, the survivors decided to wander to find a new home, scattering around. One of them later became the Palapa band. This band had a lot of knowledge with horses, which served them well in their nomadic migration.

As said before, a generation has passed. Enough that the previous leader of the band, Vishnujaya, had passed away recently. However, he had successfully passed the leadership into his son, Airjaya. Airjaya himself is an average-sized, but muscular man in his mid 20's, with black hair, brown eyes, and fair skin. Aside from leadership, he also serves as the tribe's explorer, leading them to wander around like his father did. He also hunts too, though his expertise is more in exploration.

He is also joined by a woman. She is around the same age as him, but she is shorter. Her name is Bhagyaputri. She does both field work, as well as cooking for the band. She has different parents, who have also both passed away some time ago. Finally, the third person in the tribe is Wijaya. He is a hunter.

After an uneventful year, the tribe starts to perform some activities this year. While continuing their journey, Bhagyaputri will harvest some food, while Wijaya will hunt for any local wildlife.

Airjaya (M, Scout): Lead the tribe south while hunting some food.
Bjagyaputri: (F, Worker): Forage for local plants, such as fruits like oranges. She will also try to use her band's knowledge about horses to make few follow the tribe.
Wijaya (M, Warrior): Hunt animals along the way, except for the horses.
Airjaya and Bhagyaputri will try to have a child.

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 14

My love sings behind me
And touches the nape of my neck
I do not look around
My heart flutters fast with fear.

There is not much to say of the Khortuun this year. To be sure, words [i9are[/i] exchanged between the canyon-dwellers, of course – but few of them are worthy of note or consequence. Theirs is not a dying tribe. Their lives are simple, humble and canyoned by monotonous toil. For many a turning of the seasons, the single, all-encompassing task of the canyon-dwellers have been to nurture the stalks and shoots fat, black bean into a proper harvest. Alas, despite the toil they’ve poured towards this end, and in spite of the wisdom of their best and brightest, a healthy plot has thus far eluded them – and safety with it. Without one, it seems certain the tribe will forever skirt starvation.

Do they lack for gods, perhaps? Is the source of their woes not due to method or knowledge, but a sign of the spirits’ displeasure? One could certainly be forgiven for believing so. But how, in all the world, does one placate the spirits into making plants grow? Is there some dance one might offer, to seek their happiness? Some sacrifice one might make, to please their unknowable minds? This is hard to tell – and ‘ere the ending of the year, most conversations around the tribe’s firepit dwells on this subject. The how, when and why of their misfortune; and the best way to coax some balm for their plight. From the land. From the spirits. From who knows where.

In the end, leaving seems the best option. The finest, clearest, most obvious. But if they do – if Harro, their long-limbed scout and tracksman – seeks shelter a new future for them in a foreign land – what will become of those he leaves behind?

Starvation, that’s what. And nothing but.

Harro (Male, 34, Scout) dedicates himself to the hunting of Brother Bird and Father Lizard.
Kadima (Female, 34, Warrior) hunts – flint spear to hand - whatever creeps and crawls.
Wylla (Female, 35, Scholar) doubles down on the bean-plot. It will grow, by hook or by crook.
Matha (Female, 33, Worker) gathers mushrooms and tends to the bean-plot; as is her lot in life.
Zebas (Male, 32, Scholar) assists also in the work to tend and nurture the springs and shoots of yet more beans.
Ohan (Male, 13) follows in his mother's footsteps, picking mushrooms with the best of them.
Yantewe (Male, 12) gathers mushrooms as best he can, and joins Kadima on successive hunts.
Seypelli (Male, 12, Gravely Ill) gathers mushrooms and beans also - and studies the stars with his father.
Ykka (Female, 7) draws crude mud-circles on the cavern walls, and picks mushrooms, wide and fleshy, for the cookfire.
Kadima's son (Male, 1) burbles, wails and is, in general, an adorable nuisance.

The Sons of Corvus, Year Fourteen

There is not quite enough food this year - though the shortfall is slight. The children complain about their smaller portions, and the wolves whine for scraps, but there is no serious harm done to the tribe. However, Juna has taken ill with a fever. Cavon prays it is merely a seasonal sickness. Most of their labors over the course of the past year are to keep their stomachs full, at least until the children grow enough to lend helping hands.

Thankfully, Cavon's efforts to establish a small planting of the grain nearby their home was successful. It is a small thing, hardly a man's length in size, but the prospect of future gains holds strong. Unfortunately, with blessings come curses - their pack of hunting wolves has grown smaller, with one vanishing in the night. Corvus's spirit is perhaps angered with something? Cavon and Corvin bicker and squabble about what it might be, but their actions have clearly displeased the Spirits in one way or another. Corvin secretly fears that this is Casa's vengeance beyond the grave - she warned him of the danger of bearing a child in her growing age, and yet they pursued onwards anyways. Perhaps her spirit is not the guiding angel that Cavon claims it is.

Unfortunately, despite Juna's illness, she cannot afford to rest. They all pray that her sickness will relieve itself naturally, as there is no other option. Their food situation is tenuous as is - if she stops working until this disease abates, they will surely all starve.

The jungle is a peculiar place for Ceston, to say the least. Small, short men swing from the trees, calling and shrieking in a language he cannot understand. Large rat-like things feed at the streams and pools, and the trees teem with life of all sorts. Except, of course, humanity. There is no sign of any tribe or people within this jungle, despite all the food sources, and thus he is unsatisfied with his finding. Scooping up some of the white rock that glistens into the sun, he continues onwards South. Mountains, once again.

Ceston has an innate fear of mountains from the enormous mountain apes and cave bears that lurked in the last ones he explored, but he presses on, hoping to get a good vantage point to view any potential settlements.

Corvin (M, Warrior, 34) continues to hunt gazelle with the Sling and the pack.
Corvan (M, Warrior Trainee, 12) goes on the hunt with his father.
Cavon (M, Scholar, 32) lets the wheat planting rest, and gathers yams to alleviate the burden on Juna.
Juvon (M, Scholar Trainee, 11) assists his father in this venture.
Juna (F, Worker, 32, Ill) gathers yams.
Ceston (M, Scout, 28) scouts South of South of Southwest, searching for a mate.
Janon (M, Worker Trainee, 9) gathers yams.
Jana (F, Worker Trainee, 7) gathers yams.
Lupen, Lopen, and Cara play in the sheltered fence area.

Seasons come, seasons go...

The weather is particularly mild this year in the boreal woodlands where the Hesukar band makes their home - the mammoths are taking advantage of the abundance of fresh grasses by having inordinately large amounts of young, and the forest echoes with the trumpeting of their newborns. Easy hunting for any man; the nomadic band will feast this year indeed.

Warclyfe: There is ample for all to eat this year - indeed, Vinta bears a son, a strapping lad with red tinges in his hair. The gangrene on Lu's leg is not spreading, but much of the life has gone out of the limb, and the flesh is turning gray about the wound.

Lu's efforts must be touched by Tes'la, for they soon bear fruit, in a remarkable way. Tinkering with various remedies to cleanse the body, and defied at every turn, one day he is washing some of Bo's bandages downriver of where the hunters are cleaning their kills, and the garments, stained in soot, come out cleaner than ever. They have a clean smell as well, and froth slightly with white foam. Many months of experimentation pass to replicate this process, but anon he discovers that the combination of wood-ash and carefully rendered fat from kills creates a substance which drives away the dirt which is no doubt responsible for the foul spirits which assail Bo's wound.

Deepkin: There is more than enough for all to have their fill this year. The squash planting has expanded this year, carefully tended by Istvan, and Varya has created two keen copper blades for the tribe to wield. There are yet still no children added to the numbers of the tribe.

East of east Sylvia ventures, finding yet no signs of habitation, despite the useful lay of the land. Here two great rivers converge, flowing out of the east and up from the south, to form the Great River which runs away westward through the forest. On all sides the deep woods grow lighter, turning into verdant plains. Wolves hunt in the trees here, and deer roam the forests. Nodules of brilliant white metal touched with blue occasionally can be seen in the clear river waters.

The Corvidians: There is just enough food this year for all to eat, with a bit left over. A time of plenty, by the standards of the last year. Juna's efforts were those that separated the tribe from starvation, but the toll on her body is clear - her illness is progressing, her body weakening as her iron will drives it onward. Most color is drained from her face, and the flesh hangs from her face like limp cloth, her muscles and fat reserves consumed from within by a greedy fire. There is good news though - the wheat planting is flourishing, and expanding near the village.

The mountain peaks where Ceston walks are warm, despite their height, basked in sun. Even near their summits only the wind chills the bone. No people haunt these isolated spires, but beautiful yellow birds flit between high nests here, glittering in the daylight, and there are aromatic beans which grow in the valleys, tasting like fire to the tongue. Shimmering veins of native copper, orange as the sunset, lace the cliffs here as well. From the peaks he can see the steaming foothills and tropical forests in the west, and the spine of mountains continuing southward. East cooler plains like unto his homeland fill his view.

The Aederfolk: There is plenty for the tribe to eat. The stricken Midir, fed quantities of the strange pungent sweet cane that grows near the tribe's home, has recovered nicely, and developed a taste for the sap of the reed. The child claims that in his sickness all food lost flavor, save the restoring nectar of the plant, which was like a slap of cold water and filled him with vitality for a time after consuming it.

Through harvesting the reeds near their riverhome, and beating them between heavy rocks, a thick strange fibrous substance is soon obtained. Exactly what these mats of crushed reed-fibers will be useful for is something the rest of the tribe questions, but Cyhr and Llyr seem confident they will be of great value, somehow.

Khortuun: The harvest has been good this year - the take from the growing plot of beans, enough to feed many mouths, and the hunt equally plentiful. The specter of hunger departs the tribe, at least for as long as they maintain their diligence, and some of the Khortuun have even begun to put on weight again. Though the last of the fat lizards have escaped their captivity this year, perhaps it is a sign from the spirits that the beans and mushrooms will sustain the Khortuun better than any of the small, wily animals that inhabit the rift valley.

Machaka: There is enough for all to eat well in the tribe of the Spider-Worshippers. A great breakthrough has been made in their camp - a process whereby meat, fresh from the bone, is roasted over nearly exhausted coals fed with leaves and bark, and the resulting portions resist both rot and are disinteresting to insects. With this method at least a part of the year's take of food can be held over the seasons.

Huanca: There is a plentiful amount of food in the tribe. With the newest generation reaching maturity soon, hope fills the hearts of many. Without knowledge of how exactly the potatoes grow, efforts to nurture more from the soil have been met with frustration - but Koyakusi assures his companions that he is close to a complete understanding of these matters to complement their broad knowledge of trees and plants.

The Huang: All eat well under the stars of Zhongguo, with ample left over. With several stops and starts, Tao has managed to cut two of the longer bones of the water buffalo into pointed spears - primitive, but effective in poking holes in living things until their blood runs out and they perish. These will no doubt aid the hunt, at least in comparison to the simple clubs and stones the tribe wielded beforehand. Ming has finally recovered, and feels hale enough to work again. Liu Yan bears a baby girl, though the girl is pale and weak upon birthing. All the same, she is a welcome addition to the tribe.

The Riverlanders: There is plentiful food this year in the Riverlands. Eliana has molded two gleaming copper blades, each smooth and sharp to the touch after light grinding with a bit of flint. She can't help but feel, however, like the amount of wood she used for the fire could have melted much more of the ore. All the same, the possession of these tools will no doubt be an immeasurable boon to the tribe. The furnace she used is shot through with cracks from the extreme heat contained within it, but doesn't look like it will fall part in a stiff breeze. An added boon is Eliana's own pregnancy in the late fall, when she gives birth to a healthy baby girl.

The Pennenthelli: The Pennenthelli have ample food to eat this year, sweet berries a welcome change from their diet of meat. Though Avunan's efforts to plant the sweet berries near the camp ends only in dead shoots, surely more knowledge of this new plant will come with time. With the tribe having left their stockpiles of bones and hides behind in their migration, Latozar's efforts are stymied - all the same, he makes himself useful practicing the strange art of fishing, which is so unfamiliar to his folk, and soon feels prepared to make a proper go of the effort with the proceeds from this year's kills. Sadly no children are a gift to the tribe this year.

Kathrilda's efforts are simple, and her keen fingers soon find a solution to her problem. With weaving the tough reeds that grow near the water's edge together, small patches of resilient near-fiber may be created, which can support weight and yet leave many items easy to carry. These baskets, no doubt, will aid in gleaning such small crops as the sweet red berries of this new land.

The Nirari Band: The band eats well. Their investigation of the silver bark of the trees is soon fruitless, however. They burn it, they boil it, they eat it, they inhale fumes from it - but it seems to be simple wood, albeit very pretty wood.

News from the northwest, however, is extremely interesting. When Lilitu returns she speaks excitedly of the view of a campfire in that direction, and signs of people hunting and moving along the river, and dwellings erected nearby. Judging discretion the better part of valor, she returned before fully exploring the region, but could tell that the river ran on northward through the plains there, and that vast plains sprawled about the area in all directions.

The Saladonian Band: The Saladonians eat well - and there is little else to tell of their time, save that Fara has recovered of her birth-sickness, and their first crop of carefully cured tubers has been brought in.

The Hesukar Band: The dwellers in the forest feast on the plenty of the hunt and the wilderness. There is no time to make the shrine yet grander, but there is beauty in the wicked weapons of gleaming flint which Brayva has crafted for the band, and beauty in the new squalling girl-child who she has brought forth upon the earth. North of the Hesukar Thrunnos ranges, but there he finds nothing save the familiar emptiness of the taiga beyond the great forests. The flat sunlit plains of pallid green stretch as far as the eye can see in all directions.

The Palapa Band: The people of the sea and sun migrate south, deeper into the heart of the jungle. The land they pass into is much like that of their old home, a thick hot woodland of endless trees and steamy mists. Dun gray ores can be found in pools here, and brown fruits with a sweet scent that grow abundantly, and the familiar oranges. No child is given to the couple this year, however.

Thus passes the first half of the decade. The fifteenth year of the reckoning now beckons...

It was a new year, one where many things would be accomplished. Liu Yan would give birth to another girl-child. Yan was overjoyed but, saddened when the child was weak and pale.Ming would concoct a bitterroot poultice, that would hopefully cure the child of her sickness. Yan wished to explore the lands outside of Zhongguo, she wished to spread her wings and see the great big world that laid beyond their homeland. She had heard tales from Tao of how once the Huang where a much bigger tribe, but over time the tribe would split into many clans and drift apart, the Liu Clan being one of these clans. No one knew what happened to these other clans, and with the constant struggle of survival, little thought was given to it. Still Yan was intrigued by this and wanted to head out to see if there was more Huang people out there or even people of other kindreds, her curiosity could not be satisfied until she got answers.Meanwhile Tao along with his son and assistant Tang would get to work establishing a jadegrass planting. Sons of Corvus, Year Fifteen

Things just keep getting worse for the Corvidians. It appears that Casa's death may have been a harbinger of great further suffering, as Juna grows further ill. She sits in the shade of the dugout, clearly exhausted and weak. Though there is enough food for everyone, it is clear that this will not be the case in the following year.

Thankfully, the wheat planting is flourishing. Though the grains from it are not nearly as delicious as a good cut of meat or as hearty as the yam, they can be produced in great quantities. Cavon is quite happy to see it progress, though he must put the project on hold until the youth of the village mature further.

This year, Corvin instructs Juna to rest. He fears that she may pass much like his own wife, and they have already gone through enough grief in the village already. Additionally, they set aside extra food to help her recover, and Cavon decides that he shall go without for the benefit of his wife. Hopefully the spirits relent and do not add to their number!

Thankfully, Lupen and Lopen are at an age where their helping hands are worth something. Perhaps their added labors will do something to offset Juna's absence, though it is unlikely their efforts will completely suffice.

Thankfully, these mountain peaks are quite different from the terrifying heights of the mountains to the East of the Corvidian settlement. There are no apes or bears in these heights. Rather, instead of these horrid creatures, there are merely colorful songbirds, chirping and humming as they go about their existence. Ceston finds their company endearing.

The weather is quite nice in the mountains, despite the altitude. Strange shimmering orange veins of metal lace along the cliffs, and Ceston manages to gather a few loose pieces. Cavon will be fascinated with all these stones, he assumes. The mountain peaks where Ceston walks are warm, despite their height, basked in sun. Even near their summits only the wind chills the bone. To the west are further tropical forests, and to the South further mountains. To the East, he sees plains like his homeland. If there are people other than his own, they will be there.

Ceston begins to doubt if there even are other tribes upon the earth. Perhaps his family and the pack they fled from simply are the only humans in all of existence. The more he explores this empty expanse, the more reasonable this theory seems. Regardless, he intends on planning home soon. Just a little more exploring, is all. He finds himself unwilling to admit defeat in his search for a companion - if he returns home, this glimmer of hope shall surely vanish completely.

Corvin (M, Warrior, 35) continues to hunt gazelle with the Sling and the pack.
Corvan (M, Warrior Trainee, 13) goes on the hunt with his father.
Cavon (M, Scholar, 33) gathers wheat from the planting.
Juvon (M, Scholar Trainee, 12) gathers wheat from the planting.
Juna (F, Worker, 33, Gravely Ill) rests in the dugout shelter and eats one and a half rations in an attempt to regain good health once again.
Ceston (M, Scout, 29) scouts East of South of South of Southwest, searching for a mate.
Janon (M, Worker Trainee, 10) gathers yams.
Jana (F, Worker Trainee, 8.) gathers yams.
Lupen (M, Scholar Trainee, 6) gathers yams.
Lopen (M, Worker Trainee, 6) gathers yams.
Cara (F, Worker Trainee, 5) gathers yams.

Ration priority: Extra rations to Juna takes the highest priority. Then children, then Cavon/Corvin.

Huanca

Another year of frustration for Koyakusi as he fails to figure out the secrets of the potato. Even with Sandsong helping him though she was a child. The farm that the tribe has is not going to grow in size until he figures out how to properly grow a potato. Plus, this is keeping him from focusing on other topics he wants to study such as taming an alpaca, figuring out what hematite does, and to properly ride a horse that lives out west just to name a few. Still, this does not let him sour Sandsong's ceremony into adulthood. She has been with the tribe for two years and is starting to be considered a proper member of the Huanca. Koyakusi remembers fondly his ceremony into adulthood. It was a good time before the tribe started to fight among themselves and that plague. Either way, it was a joyful event that Sandsong seemed to enjoy. Which Koyakusi and the rest of the tribe were happy of.

After the ceremony, the tribe went on to their duties. Achik hunts and helps Ninan care for their children. Ninan builds another hut so the tribe has enough for everyone. Jaylli does his duties to collect potatoes and tend to the small farm while training Inkaurqu in his ways. Wanderlust had returned to Ynti and seeing how the tribe is doing well. She feels she can explore the land once more. This time heading southeast and Koyakusi prays to the gods, made offers, and even asked for guidance from his grandfather. Something he has not done in a long time and Sandsong now a full-fledged scholar. Is eager to help him learn more about the potato and understand how to properly grow it. Meanwhile, the children play with each other and enjoy their lives. Hopefully, Koyakusi makes a breakthrough soon or he might just lose it.

There was an eerie beauty to the wending rivers of the Aederfolk's lands. Something about the cold streams coursing through the endless plains, the tall reeds which dotted the banks that ran along them. The black silhouettes of birds overhead, the wind that moaned and howled as it swept through the thin forests. There was a beauty to it, sure, but it was also unmistakable eerie. The kind of place where it wouldn't seem that out of place to spot something looking back at you from the corner of your eye . . .

The River Folk, at the Mouth of the Riverlands

As the sun set on yet another day, Katrina lay by the campfire simply admiring her latest tool - a glistening blade of solid copper. Eliana had spent a full four turnings of the grass crafting this and its sister blade, wielded by Katrina's eldest and only child. None in the tribe could recall seeing anything like them before, nor any memory of such being told by their ancestors. The scholars believed they could refine the blades even further, but for now they would serve wonderfully in her own gathering efforts. This turning, the scholars had another task at hand - the mysterious flowers that dotted the landscape.

Magnus (M, Scholar) - Investigating the golden flowers that grow here and to the west, to see if they have any uses or special traits. (Researching Sundrop Flower Comprehension)
Eliana (F, Scholar) - Investigating the golden flowers that grow here and to the west, to see if they have any uses or special traits. (Researching Sundrop Flower Comprehension)
Katrina (F, Worker) - Gathering food for the clan, a mix of maize and any other edibles available, now using a gleaming orange blade. (Gathering Food - Equipped With Copper Work-Blade)
Bronwen (M, Worker) - Tending to the maize planting, caring for it and letting it grow. He now uses the Selective Harvesting method taught by Magnus, hoping to improve the crop over time. (Tending Maize Planting)
Varin (M, Scout) - Journeying out further along the river that the Folk call home, to see where among the lands beyond it roams. (Exploring Northwest Region)
Fiona (F, Youth) - Helps her mother Katrina gathering, learning the best ways to harvest maize. (Gathering Food - Equipped With Copper Work-Blade)
Anduin (M, Youth) - Helping the scholars find the flowers of golden yellow, to make their work easier. (Gathering Sundrop Flowers for Scholar Research)
Prudence (F, Infant) - Doing baby things.

Both couples try for a child.

The Pennenthelli

As yet another year went by, the tribe carried on in it's silent life. The plain feeding them and their great plains. The small woodlands rustled in the wind of the grasslands, as the Pennenthelli hunted and lived in their little campsite. Both families hoped for more children, hoping to start the building of a strong, vital lineage in this new land of plenty, with new tools in the form of Kath's baskets to help them gather more food and with Latozar's newly gained familiarity with the previously only theoretical art of catching fish, the tribe was hopeful. Hopeful that this land could keep many mouths fed. And even if Avunan's thoughts sometimes returned to their old homeland in the north, and the Sundrop ore which still occupied his mind along with another, much more painful memory, he was sure that this land would be good for them for the time being at least, later they could always move again, hopefully with greater numbers and many children. This was a land to grow in, to flourish in.

Avunan (Scholar - M - 30): Attempts to cultivate a planting of the sweet red berries near the camp and find out how to best do so.
Kathildra (Scholar - F - 29 ): Gathers reeds and tries to weave a couple of baskets.
Henimen (Warrior - M - 31): Hunting in the plains with Jenwin armed with a spear, knife and bow.
Jenwin (Scout - F - 30): Hunting in the plains with Henimen armed with a bow and knife. If gets pregnant, stops hunting and forages with the knife instead.
Latozar (Worker - M - 30): Attempts to craft a bone fishing spear and a flint spear equipped with his trusty axe and knife.
Ronan (Kid - M - 12): Practices hunting with a sling under the eye of his parents, being taught the culture and faith of his people.
Ahleth (Kid - M - 6): Doing kid things, being watched over by the adults.

Avunan and Kathildra try for a baby.
Henimen and Jenwin try for a baby.

Fifth of First Seed, Year Sixteen of the Reckoning

Just in front of Varya the ground smoked, for every appearance looking like a wildfire had claimed this portion of the landscape. The board next to her vibrated and thrummed with the energy of the force contained behind it, but yet Varya waited, allowing the last coals of the vast blaze to do their work. Here, beneath the hillside of the white mountains that jutted before the sun west of the Mother Tree, she was cold under their shadow, but her face was warm with the incandescence of her work.

Next to her Istvan grunted, and her husband repeated a similar noise of agreement before the once-wanderer spoke.

"Well, my kin never did anything like this."

Istvan spoke rarely about his past, being a naturally laconic sort, but Varya believed him nonetheless. The coercion of stone to break via the heat of the memory of its birth in the sun was a powerful ritual Maria had discovered, and she could very easily give credit to the idea that no other kindred was so wise in the ways of earth and rock as the couple of scholars who led the Deepkin with their wisdom. The Wyrd revealed to them many secrets of the Creator, which had been hidden to the generations past.

Anon she adjudged the moment to be right, and opened the sluice gate to the small nearby channel. It was as simple as pulling up a large chunk of waterlogged bark which the tribe had placed there - and yet the sudden rush of water from the Great River foamed in with a vengeance, and Petyor covered his ears as the hissing and popping of the shattering of the bones of the earth suddenly came to his senses. Touched with the energies of creation, the stones bent and broke before the needs of the chosen of the Father, and thus could be gathered in abundance with little labor, as was the due of the stewards of the world.

Then Petyor departed, a quick kiss for his bride. Curiosity had brought him to the pit's edge, and now need drove him onward, to hunt the mighty bison for meat and hides for the use of the tribe. So it was, as it had been for years on end now.

Jarn (Scholar) continues devising a new sort of blade, specifically engineering for reaping the einkorn
Maria (Scholar) redoubles her work of formalizing the symbology of the Deepkin
Petyor (Warrior) hunts the mighty bison, wielding atlatl and blade
Varya (Worker) builds a great fire, breaking the earth and harvesting sunset ore and stone
Istvan (Worker) labors in the fields, tending and harvesting the crops with his blade
Sylvia (Scout) moves upriver, southeast of east, mapping out the lands and any peoples that are there
Natalya (Worker Aspirant) observes the great fire lit by Varya with extreme interest. Soon it will be her turn to use the strong magics of her folk.

Palapa

The year before was pretty uneventful for the tribe. They still continued their journey, hoping to find a promised land, while sustaining themselves from the local resources. After seeing how the new environment they crossed is much like their old home, the tribe gets ready to cross northward again. That being said, the tribe do memorize what resources they do find, in hopes that they are able to exploit them in later years when the band has grown.

Airjaya recalls from his memories that his father told him that the current region seems to be vaguely similar to their old region from where they originally came from. Knowing the purpose of the band's migration in the first place, he has no choice but to order further movement. As he continues trying to have a child with Bhagyaputri after their failure last year, collect resources, and lead their horses along the way, he starts to practice a worship of the nature. Particular emphasis is put on the Sun and the water, especially seas.

This worship is currently pretty simple. Airjaya and his two other band members will just take a little break from their activity by closing their eyes and concentrating on the heat of the Sun or the sound of the flowing water for few minutes while taking deep breaths and also listening to the ambience of the flowing wind, vocalizing animals, or swaying plants to go with it. Once they have finished appreciating the nature for few minutes, they will continue their activities.

This worship has helped them in their everyday life, improving the morale of the band. Speaking of activities, specifically, Airjaya will venture northwest from their location alongside all of his tribe, making makeshift homes out of wood or stones, or alternatively live in any caves the band may find. Both will have campfire for warmth and protection from hostile predators. Meanwhile, Bhagyaputri will continue picking more plants along the way. Wijaya will also collect smaller animals like bugs, as well as hunt for larger animals if the opportunity arises.

Also, using her knowledge of horse husbandry that the band has, Bhagyaputri will try to breed two horses the band currently have.

Airjaya (M, Scout): Lead the band further, into northwest of north.
Bhagyaputri: (F, Worker): Continue harvesting fruits, as well as start breeding the horses.
Wijaya (M, Warrior): Hunt animals for food and protect the tribe from any threats.
Airjaya and Bhagyaputri will try for a child again

The Canyon-Dwellers
Year 15

Slowly, almost gently, Kadima touched a finger to her lips and hissed silence through gritted teeth. Squatting at her side in the underbrush, Yantewe watched the war-woman, eyes rapt. And did not move. Then, with gentle fluidity, Kadima raised a hand and pointed – and there? But a spear-throw away on the broken ground? Yantewe saw them. Lizards, fat and long and glistening green, lay curled on the broken rocks. It was their want to do so when the sun was at its highest, and the Khortuun knew this well. The children of Father Lizard were alike their fellow canyon-dwellers in that respect.

On others, however, they were much unlike. Lizards, after all, had tails – whereas the Khortuun most assuredly did not. “Father says you had a tail when you were born!” Yantewe had teased his brother Seypelli. Once, anyway – for what felt like a lifetime ago. It was before Seypelli had caught the fever he had so struggled with. Had turned his face sallow and skin pale, and lent his eyes a pale, grey sheen. He had survived the torment of the fever-spirits, this was true – but Yantewe had never joked with his twin in quite the same manner again. He was different now – in some way he could not name.

Kadima made a soft, almost imperceptible noise – and her eyes on Yantewe’s said what her mouth did not. Pay attention! Of the tribe’s hunters, Kadima was the one who usually made use of the long, flint-capped spear. Her most precious possession – and one the children were all but forbidden to touch; let alone use. Now, however – crouched in tense position at the edge of the broken rocks – Yantewe watched as the tall women closed her hand around a small, sharp rock. An eye for good projectiles as important to a good hunter; and Yantewe was training to become one.

Then! Quick as a lizard’s tail – her muscle-wound forearm flicked and careened her chosen stone towards the unsuspecting lizards! Yantewe didn’t know what came first – Kadima’s movement or the clatter of rock on rock – but the lizards scattered. Despite their fat flanks and glistening bellies, Father Lizard’s children could move when they had to.

The curse on Kadima's lips was one Yantewe's mother would've cuffed him for. Yantewe, wise enough to know better, said not a word. Moments later, the two of them sauntered across the ground to inspect their prey. Or rather, their lack of one.

"C'mon then," Kadima groused. "Let's try another spot." Yan' merely nodded, and stooped to pluck a familiar rock from the ground. For such was the nature of hunting.

To try, and try again. Until your aim ran true.

Harro (Male, 35, Scout) dedicates himself to the hunting of Brother Bird and Father Lizard.
Kadima (Female, 35, Warrior) hunts – flint spear to hand - whatever creeps and crawls.
Wylla (Female, 36, Scholar) speaks with Harro and Kadima this year, and considers well the task of hunting. What tools might they use, to ensure their success?
Matha (Female, 34, Worker) gathers mushrooms and beans in the wilds; and toils, in her spare moments, on the widening of the tribe’s growing bean plot.
Zebas (Male, 33, Scholar) joins his wife in her efforts to consider the hunter's task, and device some tool. Some contraption, technique or device!
Ohan (Male, 14, Worker) joins his mother in the tending of the bean-plot - coaxed to life by calloused hands. And if he should find some mushrooms in his spare time? So much the better.
Yantewe (Male, 13) gathers mushrooms as best he can, and joins Kadima on successive hunts.
Seypelli (Male, 13) learns of the ice berries, and their ability to break even the hottest fevers. In his spare time, he names the brightest stars and ponders the dark between them.
Ykka (Female, 8 ) draws crude mud-circles on the cavern walls, and picks mushrooms, wide and fleshy, for the cookfire.
Kadima's boy (Male, 2) prattles, bawls and delights his mother with the odd, warbled word.

Seasons come, seasons go...

With the coming of spring, strange noises begin to be heard near the homes of the Machaka - the cries of beasts, the tramp of feet, and the babble of voices. It soon becomes clear that a nomadic tribe is passing nearby to the south, unaware of the presence of the Machaka in the deep forest, of some numbers. Whether they are friend or foe is unclear.

Warclyfe: There is ample food for all this year. The rot in Lu's wound, thankfully, cleansed by the soap and carefully tended to, has receded, and healing is obvious. By year's end the wound is no more, though a weakness of the leg and a cruel scar remain.

Deepkin: There is enough for all to eat well, with a bit left over. Using the tribe's supply of timber, Varya has harvested much copper ore. Jarn and Maria welcome a new baby girl at the year's end.

Jarn has been experimenting with several types of copper blade, curved, straight, beating them, heating them, and refining his design. Eventually he feels confident enough in his efforts to present the result to the laborers - a humble copper sickle, with a curved blade for catching many stalks of einkorn for the harvest, or slashing the stems of the gourds. This is much welcomed by the workers. Maria's efforts to formalize system of glyphs are likewise met with success.

Southeast of east, the subsidiary of the Great River, which Sylvia names the White River for its clear waters, flows up out of the south, headed to its confluence in the north. This land is wide and familiar, speaking of home to the explorer. To the east, however, great peaks rise from the terrain - mountains unfamiliar to her, taller than any hill of her homeland by far. To both south and west the plains extend. Berries, as blue as the waters of the Great River, grow here, and stands of tall amber grasses with edible heads which are both similar to and different from the einkorn of her home. The starmetal of the river confluence can still be found here. There is ill news of this discovery though - wild folk live in this country, in a small band, and it is clear to Sylvia that they are raiders and hunters of men, not a civilized tribe. She avoids them successfully, but they will no doubt be a threat to her people in years to come.

The Corvidians: There is not enough to eat this year, the children unable to contribute enough for all to have ample to eat - and Juna's rations merely contribute to the shortfall, as the tribe anticipated. Corvin and Cavon go without, determined to weather the lack with their stronger bodies. Juna's recovery is mercifully swift on such heavy rations, her body having all the fuel it needs to burn away the sickness, and she is fully recovered come autumn. The two men, however, suffer mightily, dividing between them food that might have perhaps been enough for one, to allow the children and Juna to flourish. Cavon is soon ill, wasting away under the strain of labor and little food.

Ceston's journey out into the plains is uneventful - from here he can see that north mountains rise, and to both south and the east plains beckon. The sunbirds forage in the lowlands here, descending from their mountain homes, and immense creatures the size of hills with chitinous limbs and armored shells stalk the landscape, awing him. Glittering native copper is also to be found here, where the footsteps of the giants have laid it bare. More interestingly to Ceston, it is soon clear by ashes, footfalls, and broken tools that some people must have passed through here recently, moving away south. The fires are old, and the bones of kills ancient, but he is not alone in the world.

The Aederfolk: The Aederfolk have enough to eat this year, and gather in the goods of the world to their doors. The strange reeds and white singing grasses are a curious thing indeed. Cigfa has fallen pregnant this year, and for a wonder, bears twin girls.

Khortuun: With the hands of Ohan and Yantewe soon to be joined to the harvest as men, ample food is the take of the Khortuun, hunger a receding memory. With the bean planting expanding, and the harvest good, there is much to be thankful for.

The scholars swiftly devise a simple implement, easy to make with their few resources, which can be used to stun and kill the lizards and small animals that they rely on for food. This length of dried hide, combined with their throwing pebbles, can sling a stone with such velocity that the animals don't even have time to flee before they are dead. Wylla has devised one for the use of the hunters.

Machaka: The Machaka have hunted well this year, the tribe taking animals migrating through the region, and smoking the remainder of the meat against hard times. Obi has also had a son, a blessing to the people.

Huanca: With Ynti away, the food-take of the Huanca suffers, especially as Sandsong's growing body now requires far more nourishment than that of the younger children. All go hungry, and Jaylli and Sandsong take a cough in their chests which leaves them weak and gasping for air. Ninan's hut is coming along nicely, and should be done within a season or two. Moreover, ill-luck attends the potato planting; a disease or plague has passed through the small domestic garden, which withers away. Replanting it from local stocks will be simple enough, but this is still a disappointing setback.

The labors of the Huanca to understand the potato are, ironically, met with success as Koyakusi inspects the perished crop. He feels confident that he can easily replicate their earlier efforts, and grow a large and sustainable garden, after replanting the area the first potatoes failed in. Or, maybe not quite there. The disease might be lingering.

Ynti's journey to the southeast into the thick jungle is one most satisfying to her desire for new horizons. Dark blue lapis lazuli can be found in outcroppings amidst the trees, and potatoes grow in the rich soil. Small birds with white feathers and succulent flesh roost in colonies here as well. To the east stretches the forest, but it seems to grow cooler and more temperate, the trees turning from deep green to brighter paler color. To the south, the jungle, and to the west, the jungle with the river running through it which Ynti knows of.

The Huang: The tribe have enough to eat this year, consuming their preserved supplies against hunger in order so that all may have enough for their needs. A small supply of bitterroot has been laid in, and the child has recovered well.

The Riverlanders: There is not quite enough to eat this year. None of the tribe are much worse for the lack, but hunger does not make for happy friends and family. Fortunately the maize planting is expanding, carefully tended, and may help with this lack in the coming year. No children bless the tribe in this time of hunger.

Northwest of the tribe, and upriver, the great forest marches seemingly without end. Out of the north the river comes, and Varin sees no signs of anything save endless trees to north, west, or the familiar east. The giant trees, as tall as the very sky, their pale bark gray in the twilight, grow here as well. Pale blue flowers grow here and along the stream in great numbers, and native copper can be found in the stream.

The Pennenthelli: There is more than enough for all of the Pennenthelli to eat well this year. Latozar has carefully cut a barbed bone harpoon with his knife, and gathered flint for his next project. Kathrilda has simultaneously gathered reeds for and laboriously woven a basket, for gathering the sweet red berries. Avunan's labors have born fruit, and a minute field of the small berry bushes is sprouting near the new camp. Unfortunately no children are given to the tribe by the spirits.

The Nirari Band: The band eats well, and amasses further iron shards for their purposes.

The Saladonian Band: The Saladonians subside much as they always have, and this time journey west, praying for a favorable region to live within while the trader is away. The land that unfolds before them is strange to the wanderers, for a river flows through it out of the north, bearing away west, and great mountains rise where the river rises from. Trees with large black berries can be found in copses here, and the familiar tubers, as well as low seed-grasses of an emerald hue that the horses like the graze upon.

The Hesukar Band: The band eats well, though their attempts to take a live mammoth youngster are unsuccessful. Brayva has successfully used their stocks of hides to cobble together another small shelter by the year's end, which is welcomed by the men who were allowing her to sleep indoors with the children alone. Nothing quite like a warm hide to keep off the winter snows in style.

The Palapa Band: Knowing that only the wild sea rises northwest, the Palapa Band heads instead east after much discussion, following the coastline there. Their journey soon leads them to the edge of a great bay, which stretches to the east of their migration, and where jungle stretches away to the south and coast north. This land is not much removed from their old home, hot and wet, with black sand along the coast much like their home. There is danger that stalks this land though, great orange and black striped tigers of immense strength, and it is only via fire that they are warded away from the tribe. The tigers seem to hunt rodents of unusual size, who have sable black fur and grow as a large as a small child.

Thus ends the year of the reckoning, and the sixteenth dawns anew...

It was a good year at least so far has Tao could tell for it was just the beginning. Ming could finally aid him in working the jadegrass, it was frustrating, he had been trying to establish a planting for years yet he couldn't get the crop to establish itself at all.Ming was a bright and intelligent woman, and wise in her years. She would be a boon to turning the Huang from hunters to farmers. This was especially needed because the clan was near capacity, and needed a sustainable food source. Jadegrass was good to eat, but for now it could only gathered in the waters rather then farmed like Tao desired to have a reliable source of food. Hopefully this year no one would get sick and the Huang could finally have some progress.
