Yes but people back then often learned if food was edible by observing and learning from the animals.In any case I need to find some copper.

Categorically I allow them to start learning/contributing at six, and count them as adults at 14, though there are various minor ways in which that can be variable. A woman who becomes pregnant at 14, for instance, is much more likely to experience difficulties in childbirth.
