Currently I am working with a system where I quantify how many more people could be fed on what is harvested in a given year. It is a nice solid empirical number which is easy to calculate and consistent.
I could, however, switch to a system whereby I quantify how many workers could be taken off of harvesting food. That seems to be a metric more in line with how folks are scheduling their orders, but would be subject to a lot more uncertainty and variability due to how Worker A is not equal to Worker B in terms of food harvesting potential. As opposed to how Worker A will almost always eat the same amount of food as Worker B.

I, for one, am happy with things as they are. Granted, the current system for figuring out how many folks you can dare give tasks other than harvest food is... uncertain. Nebulous. But I like it like that. The moment you reduce orders and plans to imperical numbers and straight-up calculation,s you take something away from this game. This RP, and the world our tribesmen inhabit, is just that - uncertain, harsh and nebulous.
Come feast or come famine, I like it that way.

Well, you won't be getting numbers either way - it's more a case of my wording. Does ample food mean you could feed X more people, or does ample food mean you could take X more people off of food? That's basically the difference. All of the enough/ample/plentiful/etc. values have ranges, so you'll always be dealing with a certain amount of ambiguity.

In case this was in reference to my kids when I had started the first three at age 1, I corrected that error previously.
If its not about my kids, then please ignore. I noticed the age differences in the ledger and checked to see how you had been dealing with your kids and conformed to that norm. Isrid and Tyris should be 15 this year, Varys 12, and Alys 2. Post update, 16, 16, 13, 3.
