Hey G, I was trying to see if I could see if there was any fish or anything that I could see without getting a raft.

That's some accelerated artificial selection right there.

Yeah, that's not -really- how it works. Your region is coastal, so if there were fish south on the shore, they would be 'in' your region. The only reason I'm listing otherwise for some people is because they seem quite determined to send explorers off to random places.

I’m not sure if you’ve realized it yet - but when I told you you were on a peninsula with ocean to the north, east, and west, erm, it meant that there was water north.

Oof, so I actually stayed for a while. I thought I'm exploring a lot. That sets back my contact with other people. I'm honestly confused by the geography and how the explored area is described in the IC for me

Well, my descriptions tend to be fairly straightforward. Exploration with a scout confirms a region’s terrain, resources, and gives a broad sketch of the terrain in three of the four cardinal directions - usually the directions the scout did not come from.

A thinking question for y'all - would it help if I altered how I do food level descriptions? I notice those people who are starving tend to vacillate between feast and famine.

Currently I am working with a system where I quantify how many more people could be fed on what is harvested in a given year. It is a nice solid empirical number which is easy to calculate and consistent.

I could, however, switch to a system whereby I quantify how many workers could be taken off of harvesting food. That seems to be a metric more in line with how folks are scheduling their orders, but would be subject to a lot more uncertainty and variability due to how Worker A is not equal to Worker B in terms of food harvesting potential. As opposed to how Worker A will almost always eat the same amount of food as Worker B.

Thoughts? Comments? Dismissals? Chagrin?

I, for one, am happy with things as they are. Granted, the current system for figuring out how many folks you can dare give tasks other than harvest food is... uncertain. Nebulous. But I like it like that. The moment you reduce orders and plans to imperical numbers and straight-up calculation,s you take something away from this game. This RP, and the world our tribesmen inhabit, is just that - uncertain, harsh and nebulous.

Come feast or come famine, I like it that way.

Well, you won't be getting numbers either way - it's more a case of my wording. Does ample food mean you could feed X more people, or does ample food mean you could take X more people off of food? That's basically the difference. All of the enough/ample/plentiful/etc. values have ranges, so you'll always be dealing with a certain amount of ambiguity.

I think you are doing fine with it. If you really want everyone to know about how the system works exactly perhaps just tell us. I've always figured that ample meant enough to feed 3-5 more whereas enough was just that. Enough. Like actual early societies, the tribes we are working with won't know these values. They will have to adjust as they grow and ensuring that they are only having "enough" food and no more can still lead to starvation during a bad year.

Then there is also the environment to take into consideration. If you don't have a food resource, it will take more effort to feed everyone. If you have dangerous/hostile creatures it'll also take more time.

Oh, just a general note, since I've seen several folks struggle with this - remember that children are born aged 0 years, not 1. If my ledger in the IC lists a tribe member as being 13, they won't be an adult in your post - they'll be an adult after the -next- update.

In case this was in reference to my kids when I had started the first three at age 1, I corrected that error previously.

If its not about my kids, then please ignore. I noticed the age differences in the ledger and checked to see how you had been dealing with your kids and conformed to that norm. Isrid and Tyris should be 15 this year, Varys 12, and Alys 2. Post update, 16, 16, 13, 3.
