It needs to be a megacrisis, I have a few ideas.

Here are my ideas:

- Superhurricane ravages the South
- A massive biochemical attack destroys a decently sized settlement, perpetrators unknown
- Same sort of thing, but with a nuclear reactor
- Yellowstone has a minor eruption, people go into hiding for a few days
- Meteor crashes into population centre
- Tsunami/Earthquake ravages the Pacific Coast (I heard they're set for a superearthquake soon, so that's fun)
- A heatwave affects agriculture and causes food shortages in many cities (deaths probably will be from the heatwave itself rather than the food shortages, but it'd still be interesting)

They're all a bit extreme, and all but two would affect politics significantly, I think.
