During high school, Troy also realized that he was bisexual, and came out to his family, who were all hardcore progressives and accepted him for who he was.

He attended New York University, and it was there that he met his future husband, Felix Holt, who was two years his junior. The two met through a group of mutual friends, and hit it off big time, beginning a serious relationship less than three months after meeting. When Troy graduated and Felix remained at the college, Troy began a part time job as a columnist for New York Magazine, remaining in New York so that he could be with Felix.

After his boyfriend graduated, the two moved to Virginia, to be closer to Washington, where both of their interests (journalism and politics) intersected easily. He proposed only a month after the move, and the two got married. Troy aided Felix throughout his political career, helping him write his speeches, and in the year 2017, they adopted a son, Adam. They gave their son Felix’s last name.
