After the japanese empire conquered most of mainland asia, The dutch goverment cooperated with the local indonesians to form a coalition against the japanese, they subsequently lost and the three years of occuptaion by the japanese goverment persisted. After the fall of britian by the axis, Queen wilhelmina and the rest of the dutch court escaped to buitenzorg at the east indies, and begged the local goverment to let them stay here. They agreed, and in 17th of August 1945 the Commonwealth of indonesia was established as a constitutional monarchy. The years followed, was a diplomatic struggle between both sides for the commonwealth to remain on the co-prosperity sphere and not become a puppet of the japanese empire. in 1950, both sides reached an agreement and Indonesia was fully independent and controlled the territories of the former british malaya and portuguese timor
