The Third Age: The War for Middle-Earth [OOC|Open]

| The War for Middle-Earth |

Image

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Our tale takes us to Middle-Earth, dear listeners. A land of beauty and wonder not seen in our realm of existence. Kingdoms of Men most noble exist in these lands, chivalrous Gondorians and the Rohirrim Horse Lords; mighty bastions of good. Within their halls of stone and under mountains old dwell the Dwarves, a proud people with whom the world watches enviously, for their mounds of wealth are plenty and theirs. In forests yonder with music, art and song have the age-old Elves made a home, a race of peace and tranquility that will do all to defend what it has. Finally, the Hobbits most fair reside in their small dwelling; the Shire. They are a peaceful folk, not willing to get involved within the diplomacy and tidings of the other peoples of Arda.

All is not well upon Middle-Earth however, for after an eon of waiting, the Dark Lord Sauron; Servant of Morgoth, has returned. He brings with him fire and malice to conquer the lands of Men, Dwarf, Elf and Hobbit and will do all in his unquestionable power to seize the territories that he believes are rightfully his, to bring forth an order of excellence and efficiency, to succeed where his master could not. To his South reside the Haradrim, or Southrons in our Western-Tongue, tribal confederations aplenty united in their hatred for the Men of the West. To his North we find the powerful and militaristic Easterlings, Men of Rhun who have themselves brought Gondor onto her knees innumerable times. Sauron's numerous legions are filled with Orcs, creatures that themselves are testimony to the defiance against Eru Ilúvatar and Sauron will unleash them upon Arda when he is ready.

Long ago, Sauron forged a mighty tool: The One Ring. He lost this weapon long ago - at the final battle of the War of the Last Alliance. Now he yearns for its return and will stop at nothing to get it to assist him in his quest for unification and conquest of Arda. Long ago it was lost, and has passed into shadow, but as the ages of the world turn what is forgotten may once more be remembered...

Now it is up to you, listener of this tale; what side do you fight for?

General Notes

The Ring is still in Gollum's possession, but Thorin's Company managed to retake Erebor alongside the Men of the Lake and the Wood-Elves.

Recruitment
Every faction may recruit, by default, the equivalent of 10 Elves per month. Every faction may recruit, once per month, once per Settlement per Tier, the equivalent of 1 more Elf in their race's armies.
Goblin: 10
Lesser Spiders: 7
Hobbit: 6
Orc: 4
Morannon Orc: 3
Warg: 3
Lesser Men: 3
Uruk: 2
Higher Men: 2
Dwarves: 2
Great Spiders: 2
Elves: 1

These must be recruited at a City, unless otherwise noted. They are more powerful than Elves, and thus their Recruitment Value is the number of points you'll need to allocate to raise them. Some factions may have none of these, some multiple.
Stone Trolls: 20
Ship: 20
Great Eagles: 30
Cave Trolls: 30
Battering Ram: 30
Cairn Wraith: 40
Mountain Trolls: 50
Catapult: 50
Olog-Hai: 80
Siege Tower: 100
Mumakil: 200
Blasting Fire Carrier: 400
Great Siege Engine: Variable

These are in no way set figures that will determine battle, but will merely serve as the backbone of realism. Or, y'know, the hilt of Grond when I smash your face in.

Settlements
Settlements are urban areas in regions where your folk congregate, where you must defend and from where you draw your armies. Their loss will no doubt spell doom for your people. Settlements come in Tiers, and have Fortifications. By default, colonizing a new region takes the equivalent of 1000 Elves six months to accomplish. Only after this time may more forces be raised from this region. Settlements advance one Tier every year thereafter.
Outpost: Default settlement.
Hamlet: Tier II settlement.
Town: Tier III settlement. May raise mounted units for double price in Recruitment.
City: Tier IV settlement. Usually gives access to unique units, depending on nation.

Fortifications: These take manpower to construct, but can greatly enhance your chances of defending your holdings. 1 Labor = 1 Elf-equivalent working for a month
Palisade: A light wooden wall with no gate, good for funneling an enemy. 500 Labor
Stockade: A sturdier wooden wall with a humble gate and light towers. 1500 Labor
Curtain Wall: A light wall of cracked stone with sturdy gates and frowning battlements. 5000 Labor
Ramparts: A thick wall of wrought stone with gates barred in iron, and hoarded towers to turn back even determined foes. 15000 Labor
Stronghold: A formidable bastion of cunningly worked stone and steel, immune to almost any attack, studded in parapets and siege weapons. 30000 Labor
Citadel: An impregnable fortress with wall upon wall, keep after keep, gate after gate, protected not only by thick stone and stout walls but whatever enchantments of binding and warding your folk can summon. They shall break upon this place like water upon rock. 100000 Labor

Captains
Captains are lords, generals, warmongers, and other people of note who lead your forces to battle. Every faction will begin with one, and more may be earned via quests or victory in combat. A Captain may be assigned to a formation of some hundreds of soldiers, and allows the poster controlling that formation to make an additional battle stratagem post after the initial meeting engagement - a significant tactical advantage. Captains that survive a battle and win may be promoted to Commanders, who may command thousands through two additional stratagems, and Generals may command tens of thousands or more, through up to three additional stratagems. In the case of a Command mismatch, only one additional stratagem may be used.

Ah, delightful. I'd certainly be happy for someone to do it. My image-editing skills are... shall we say, lackluster.

Honestly, I've grown to not-hate the movies over the years. Hollywood has given us so many other adaptations that are absolute blasphemy of their source material compared to LotR, it could have been so much worse.

Tagging for obvious reasons.

Could I hold unto Moria, if it has yet to fall? (or even play to retake it as a dwarven expedition)

Alright, this is fantastic.

Could I app for the Kingdom under the Mountain, under the dread king Smaug I the Magnificent? It would be a slow buildup, with Smaug not really interested in the divine machinations of Sauron, but more interested in being seen as a king among kings, an equal of the likes of Elrond, Saruman and Theoden.

If that is not the role you envisioned for Olth, of course, because I'd happily do any other number of things.

Well, a simple regional map would do quite fine - likely with shading to indicate realms and factions, if you could manage that. Cities and landmarks I doubt will be necessary, save perhaps capitols.

Well, you write men quite well, in my opinion. And you usually prefer freeform to RPGs. As such, I was thinking that the Prince of Dol Amroth, Imrahil, would be a good place for you to be. Near to the action, but no need to tinker with numbers as much as the main Gondor RPer will be liable to.

Tysklandia wrote:Tagging for obvious reasons.

Well, Moria fell long ages ago, and has yet to be reclaimed. You could certainly play as a Dwarven expedition from the Iron Hills or the Blue Mountains angled towards seizing it again, but I should warn you - that is a path fraught with danger. As the Battle of the Five Armies never occurred, three quarters of the goblin-warriors of the North did not perish, and Bolg yet lives... as well as Durin's Bane.

Unfortunately, I'd be remiss in granting you that role - another already inquired, and I'm going to have to give you the response I gave him: Smaug, as well as the Balrog, the Ents, and the Great Eagles are being held as plot devices, not factions, since usually having someone play such powerful entities upends RPs like this. I'd certainly be alright with you wanting to play a canon-adjacent character though, like a wyrm or lesser fire drake based out of the Withered Heath/Grey Mountains/western White Mountains.

Well, even if we fail. It would be a fun, tense story to follow, requiring the need for allies, supplies and fought with battle in the early-mid stages of the game.

I'll look to drop an app later today.

If someone else grabs the iron hills, it would be a fun collaboration play.

Oh yes, I'm quite hopeful about getting someone for the Iron Hills. Dain will have a lot to do.

Realm: The Dwarven Kingdom of Erebor and the Iron Hills
Leader: King under the Mountain, Dáin II Ironfoot
Race(s): Dwarven
The Glorious and heroic effort of Thorin Oakenshield marked a glorious return of Durin's Folk to the Lonely Mountain in TA 2941. As Dain led his people in the battle of the five Armies and became king under the mountain after the death of his nephew, Thorin Oakenshield, his realm of the Iron Hills was incorporated under the throne of Erebor as it became, once more, the seat of the King of all Durin's Folk.

In the years since, great efforts were made to restore Erebor to it's former glory, as it's forged burn bright once more and miners delve deep into the earth to retrieve the metals necessary to fuel them. Even with many of the Iron Hills travelling to Erebor to populate it's abandoned halls, the riches Dain had at his disposal allowed him to firmly keep a grasp on the territories in the Iron Hills and strengthen their old home their furthermore. And with the riches of Erebor fueling the reconstruction of the Dale and the trade routes to Ered Luin, good relations have been fostered with both their human and dwarven allies of yore. Although ancient qualms with elvenfolk remain, as long as darker forces loom on the horizon and squat in ancient dwarven holds, it is clear to both elven and dwarven folk that such grudges are to be left for another time.

Although hope in the future is at a a height not seen in many a year, it is still dampened by the continued loss of many lands once held dear by all dwarven folk. Ancient holds like Gundabad and Khazad-Dum still lie in the grasp of foul beasts and even Dain knows neither the grey or misty Mountains can be easily retaken. But with foulness in the air and evil on the horizon, Durin's Folk can not sit idle in the Lonely Mountain and amass wealth. The need for dwarven might and steel has never been higher and Dain knows it is in the wars to come that the dwarves must rise and reclaim their ancient glory, lest they risk losing it all, once more.

It is due to this, that Dain has strengthened his force of arms. Dwarven might in steel and body have been raised in numbers not seen since the battle of Battle of Azanulbizar and the time grows near that this host shall march out of the reforged gates of Erebor and fight to reclaim all dwarven holds lost in Middle-Earth.

Alignment : The Free Peoples
Faction Bonuses:
Itinerant Folk: Durin's kin have long been scattered, wanderers without homes, seeking for a place to call their own since the destruction of Khazad-Dum and the devastation of much of the Dwarven realms of the Grey and Misty Mountains by goblins and dragons. With the Kingdom under the Mountain restored, the numbers of those who come daily to join in the great work is not inconsiderable, and they swell the ranks of those who serve Dain. For the first three years, thirty Dwarves will join Dain's forces at Erebor every month, and founding Settlements takes half as many Dwarves.

Masters of Rock and Stone: There are no earth-gnawers and stone-biters like unto the children of Aule, even in the ranks of the kin of Westernesse or those trained by the Great Enemy. A dozen dwarves, tools, and time to work, can make any place strong beyond the measure of mortal men to breach. Fortifications cost 40% less to erect.

Territory: The Lands of the Iron Hills and The Lonely Mountain, Trade routes connecting both lands. Alliances with the Men of Dale
Settlements:
Erebor (A City Lvl 4, Fortification: Citadel)
Hammerstead in the Iron hills (A population Depleted Town, classified as a Hamlet) LVL II. Fortifications: Ramparts)
Járnfast in the Iron Hills ( A Hamlet LVL II. Fortifications : Curtain Wall)

Strength:
- 5000 Dwarven Warriors (Mix of melee and ranged infantry)
- 200 Great-Goat/Great Boar Cavalry
- 10 Dwarven Heavy Iron Ballistas
- Captain Gloin, Son of Groin

That’s no problem! I’ll browse a bit further, since there is so much interesting stuff going on in Middle Earth. If you have any particularly interesting spots you’d want filled let me know.

Sorry for saying something but Great Confed if you wish to RP as a lesser dragon trying to be a pair of warlords trying to make kingdoms then I'm game. I'm actually writing up a cold-drake with a knack for magic and has made a cult-like control over some tribe of Goblins who accidentally stumbled upon it sleeping and decided to try it's hand in building an empire with the largest hoard of coin and knowledge.

Or something like that.
