Nuridia wrote:Alright, she's finished. Kate is fuckin tired, ok? She's aged ten years dealing with Victor and Charles' asses and this knight in shining armor is more like "my vodka aunt in tinfoil" (his words, not mine). Someone pls help this lady, she needs a vacation.

Other App:
Name: Katrina "Kate" Cassidy, Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of Cerberus
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Race/Species: Human
Personality: Wiseass, always tired, grumpy af, aggressively "take charge", smokes like crazy, royal babysitter, loves kids and her dumbass himbo of a king, doesn't get paid enough, drinks too much, the big sister friend.
Sexual/Romantic preference (optional): "Straight as my blade."
Appearance:
Bio: Lady Katrina Cassidy was the eldest child of the Baron of Tesira (an old Marseillean region in the heart of their wine country), Meallán Cassidy and his wife, Lady Armistice Cassidy (who got her unusual name from the celebration of the first peace treaty between Marseille when it was still divided, thus ending the civil war). She grew up simply on her family's manor, sometimes helping out with the farm work or blacksmithing when her father couldn't hire men or if some of them fell ill.Her parents were social climbers and were eager to see their daughter wed to a prominent family, especially since she was considered very beautiful and well-spoken. But Katie always knew that she wanted to make a name on her own merit, and she'd been inspired by knights ever since she was a little girl so when she was eleven her parents sent her off to become a squire. She trained under a knight, Sir Kellan Archer who became a sort of father/older brother figure to her and taught her all the traditional knightly codes of chivalry, protecting the innocent and weak, slaying evil and all that jazz. Like the knights in shining armor in her stories, she was wide-eyed and hopeful.

But soon the stars left those big gray eyes as a fifteen year old Kate experienced her first taste of battle during one of King Victor's wars. Knighthood was nowhere near as glamorous as she had thought, she was very shaken but surprisingly wasn't scared off. Some reassurance from Sir Kellan and a few weeks to get her bearings, and she was more determined than ever after seeing what her brothers and sisters in arms sacrificed to protect their country. Being a knight was about protecting people, and if she left now she'd never become strong in order to protect those she loved. But as the battles raged on, Kate became more and more disillusioned. They were supposed to be fighting for something, but the longer the wars continued the more she saw that they weren't fighting for anything but wealth and power. Victor was obsessed with getting his empire back, and to many it seemed that it didn't matter how many lives were lost in the process. With that, she left the army and went to go turn in her resignation at the palace but was stopped by Queen Andrea. The queen too had seen the ravages of war, and now was not only worried about the safety of her kingdom but of her children and asked the former soldier if she would stand guard over the royal children, fearing that they could be kidnapped or murdered by malcontents. Kate was honorable, she could be trusted...her first instinct was to flat out refuse but these were defenseless children. Protecting the kingdom's future was a hell of a lot better than fighting and killing over dirt, even though the future of Marseille seemed quite bleak then.
With this new duty, Kate seemed to slowly gain back a little of her faith in knighthood and became particularly attached to the young Prince Charles because he was the one who mostly reminded her of her younger brother back home. In return, Charles grew to love her and even affectionately called her Sissy. She'd helped save his life many a time, or scolded him for running in the palace depending on what day it was. When Charles eventually became king, Kate made it her new mission to help him mend not only the reputation of the country, but she also wanted to mend the reputation of her Order and make it something to be proud of again rather than something that was feared and distrusted. To that effect, Charles appointed her Grand Master of the Order of Cerberus, the foremost chivalric order in the country. She works now to instill discipline in her knights as well as protect this fool at the same time.
Goals: To help the king repair the damage in Marseille and restore the Order of Cerberus to its former glory, keep Charles from dying or doing dumb shit,
Likes: Her family, ale, upholding her creed, men (the cute ones especially), Charles, especially when he's handling business and being kingly.
Dislikes: When Charles does something dumb, being reminded of the tarnished (though recent) past of her Order.
Theme Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTQWdHpN3Mo
Powers/Abilities: The Order of Cerberus teach their members magic, mainly light combat magics to aid in their fighting styles, unlike many knightly orders...so she's an eldritch knight.

You're actually pretty accurate to what I had in mind. Except Agcron is more tropical/subtropical rather than desert.

It just occurred to me that cyclopes, especially those just arriving to the surface, would almost certainly need eye protection, due to the relatively intense amount of light....

Would it be acceptable for Edenia and her guards to wear sunglasses to the wedding/meeting?

Sure, eyeglasses were invented in the 1300s in RL, and people can tint glass. Plus we have magic so accuracy is kind of irrelevant.

Dwarves still exist, they're just far rarer now than they used to be.

Fardel, your elven kingdoms are accepted as well. Grim, your app looks good so far but I just have to finish reading over your history.

Quendi...one thing. Your apps look really good, but the family ties you came up with kinda complicate things. Charles is fighting like hell NOT to get roped into another war, and having Tali as his cousin may drag him into one a bit too soon, I wanted to give an interval between Victor's conquering spree and the war we're all gonna have to fight against the Frost.

I just took for granted that a Termain queen of Marseille would be of the royal bloodline. Just because a monarch have some royal cousins doesn't force anyone to get involved in a war they don't want to fight though.

Hey where is the Mordkan Republic on the map?

Damn, I forgot to add it on paint. I guess the Mordkans are in the northernmost part of Jorvik (the little green strip, indicating Mediterranean climate) part bordering Termain

Nuridia, I'm going to make the leader app for now. Do you mind if I have him related to Victor Charles Keroualle, maybe his sister married into the House of Albaspina? The Italian House of Medici were historically related to the Valois of France and I want to make something like that... plus if Charles is going to be dragged into a war, we could provide support as well.

Charles is just going to explain to his cousin that he wants to help her, but he simply doesn't have the means at the moment...but he certainly won't aid her enemies. Marseille literally is pouring its resources into combating the Frost, they can't fight another war because they're still recovering from the last one. But yes, you can make your leader related to the late king (I don't think y'all got any wars going on). Henriette is marrying Tali because they both need the alliance and they actually have the resources to assist them. I can see Charlie trying to pull a Secret Treaty of Dover type of deal and secretly send Tali supplies and gold if it came down to it tho.

And Quendi, I thought about it and you had a point...your apps are now fully cleared and accepted.

Yes, I could see it that way. Either way, Verantia is positioned just on the door of Marseille, so it would still make sense for Verantian or Marseille politics to be related.
Wait... who is Tali fighting again?

Other App:
Name: Wilhelmine "Mina" Friederike Sture von Bardewik
Age: 31
Gender: Female
Race/Species: Human of Orian origin
Personality: Wilhelmine Sture von Bardewik is a polite well mannered and cultured noblewoman.
Sexual/Romantic preference (optional): Heterosexual
Appearance:
Bio: Wilhelmine Friederike von Bardewik was born to the influential and wealthy merchant-noble Bardewik family of Orias and grew up in the Termain capital city of Tera in her family's grand and opulent palace. Little was expected of Wilhelmine as she grew up but that she would eventually make an advantageous marriage that would further the commercial and political interests of her family, and she had no objection to this. She was given the education of a noble maiden. She was taught to read, but only given "proper" religious texts. She was taught to dance, but only modestly, to sing and play music, but only in private. Her upbringing was sheltered and her education lacked any practical value. "Mina" as she was known did not mind it at the time.

After King Thorolfr Yngling died the Bardewik family backed Oda in the ensuing royal election and cheered for his successful election. Mina, knowing nothing of politics and having no opinion on who should be king cheered because her family cheered. Not long thereafter, when Mina was fourteen, her father decided that she should marry into a prominent Torian family to help take advantage of the regime change and ensure Bardewik commercial interests in the Torian provinces. The choice fell upon Steen Steenssen Sture the Younger, the namesake son of the Regent of Tor, a very favorable match Mina was told.

It was arranged for the wedding to be held in Rodnar and Sture the Elder's wife and some of his daughters arrived at Tera to escort Mina to their city for her wedding and first meeting with her husband to be. Before her marriage Mina had never been more than a day's ride away from Tera (her family's country estate marked the furthest she had been away from the capital) and she knew very few people outside her family. The journey north towards Rodnar, with her foreign in-laws was a both exciting and scary adventure. During the journey she would occasionally be cheered by Torian supporters of the Sture but more often she found that the Trojan peasants giving her carriage sullen looks. Her youngest sister-in-law accidentally revealed that Orians were not popular in Tor and that was the cause of the sullenness that greeted her. This was the first time Mina learned of the hostility between Tor and Orias and she felt an instinctual desire to defend Orias, which she however resisted so as to not offend Lady Sture.

Mina and her in-laws arrived at Rodnar, a city that was markedly different from Tera. At the Royal Palace (for a such existed as the Torians had never quite accepted that the capital of Termain was in Orias) she meet her father-in-law and her husband to be for the first time. Sture the Younger was handsome enough, a few years her senior, and very polite and correct in his behavior towards Mina. The wedding was held that very day, a relatively simple affair (much later Mina learned that Sture the Elder had deliberately downplayed the affair for fear that the sore feelings among the Rodnarians who still mourned the last Torian king might be inflamed by a marriage between a prominent Torian family and a "foreign southerner") and after a banquet at the Palace the wedding party proceeded directly to the bedding ceremony. Mina and Sture the Younger was lead to the bedroom by a large group of people, tucked in and had a blessing said by a preacher. Then the party left.

Mina, only just fifteen years old and with a vague understanding of the concept of marital consumption was nervous. But nothing happened. Sture the Younger gave her a polite emotionless kiss and wished her goodnight before falling asleep. Mina got a vague feeling that that was not quite usual.

After their wedding night spent at the royal palace they moved to the Sture family mansion in the city where they got private apartments. And separate bedrooms. Mina saw very little of her spouse as he spent most of his time with his many handsome young friends enjoying various frivolous activities or with his father learning about ruling. Mina however grew quite close with some of her sisters-in-law. But as time passed and the Sture family became aware of the sleeping arrangements of Mina and her husband tension rose in the Sture mansion. One day Mina was asked to tea by her mother-in-law where her mother-in-law discussed with Mina "the birds and the bees" and her responsibilities as a wife. The conversation unfolded in metaphorical terms and didn't entirely explain the problem that Mina was expected to remedy but it did however convince her that her and her husband's sleeping arrangements was a source of displeasure for her stern mother-in-law. That day Sture the Elder spoke in private with his son. Mina never knew what precisely was discussed but that very day Sture the Younger's best friend, an impossibly handsome youth, received a military commission in Eyjarnar province, half a world away.

That night Mina's marriage was consummated. It happened so fast she barely realized what had happened before it was over. Her husband arrived late at her bedroom did something to her and then left after planting a businesslike kiss on her hair. Surprised Mina did not quite know what to think of the whole affair. This would be repeated frequently but her interactions with her husband was otherwise few and far between. Instead she spent her time with her sisters-in-law. Her marriage consummated Mina was now welcomed fully into the family, even by her stern mother-in-law. As the wife of the eldest son of the regent of Tor Mina was effectively the second lady of Tor and her lifestyle was very different from the withdrawn isolation of her life in Tera. She entertained ladies and attended state events. She found it highly enjoyable and it did not take her long to learn the language of Tor. This impressed Sture the Elder and he began to take a liking to his always polite and respectful daughter-in-law. He may have also disapproved of his son's behavior towards her, making him more concerned about her than he otherwise might have been. When he went on tour of the country with his son he allowed his daughter-in-law to join them, hoping no doubt to force his son to take an interest in his wife. That didn't work. But Mina enjoyed the trips. Despite her ignorance and lack of education (a fact now partially remedied by books provided her by Sture the Elder on the history, religion and traditions of Tor) she understood that Sture the Elder was a beloved regent by the peasants and burghers of Tor but was opposed by much of the nobility and many faith leaders.

A few years passed and while Mina's lack of a pregnancy was remarked upon most of her family seemed to lay the blame of Sture the Younger, whose visits to Mina's bed seemed to ebb and flow according to a supply of stern admonishment from his father. Despite the lack of children and the neglect of her husband Mina was happy. She enjoyed freedoms in Tor she never did in Orias and as she learned more about the country she inhabited than she ever knew about the one in which she was born she increasingly came to identify with Tor. She also began to identify with the Sture party in Tor.

A few years after Mina's marriage her father-in-law died on a trip to Tera. It was whispered that he had been planning a rebellion against King Oda either in favor of installing an Yngling king on the Termain throne or perhaps to simply declare himself king of Tor. Mina did not believe such things, but to her surprise she did not find either ideas revolting. Why shouldn't an Yngling rule? Why shouldn't Tor be an independent kingdom? She had no strong objections to either idea. Whatever the truth of the matter, Sture the Elder was dead. As the office of regent was not hereditary Sture the Younger was passed over for the appointment in favor of a much older and more experienced man. The Sture family retired from Rodnar to the family seat at Fornsigtun northwest of Rodnar. In a piece of good news Mina however found out she was with child. She gave birth to her son Svante Steenssen Sture in Fornsigtun. It was a hard birth but as Mina was dozing off after the fact she heard the sound of cheers from the people of Fornsigtun outside her window. These Sture loyalist was cheering a new heir to the Sture dynasty, and many cheered for "Mina Sture" as well. She fell asleep with a smile.

Despite the birth of a new Sture heir the Sture family's fortunes was dramatically reversed by the death of Sture the Elder. Sture the Younger was not the man his father was and without the powerful office of regent the family couldn't assert dominance over other prominent Tor families. Sture the Younger never seemed much interested in the affairs of his family. Though Jarl of Sweodeod, and master of Fornsigtun Sture the Younger did little to improve his fortunes, preferring to hunt and party with close male friends. When Mina asked to be allowed to help her husband he gladly accepted and she soon became involved in ruling her husband's domains.

Time passed and the situation in Tor grew unstable. The new regent, while an able administrator seemed unable to pacify Tor for King Oda. Eventually he resigned after failing to suppress a rebellion. Sture the Younger was named the new regent and the family returned to Rodnar only to find that a famine had broken out. As chance would have it a fleet of Bardewik merchant vessels with grain was in the port. With grain prices through the roof only the rich could afford grain. Mina intervened using the outstanding sum her family owed the Sture's as part of her dowry to purchase the grain and then sell it to the people of Rodnar at normal prices. It made her very popular in the city.

Time passed and Sture the Younger ruled as able as he could as regent in Rodnar ably aided by his wife. Sture the Younger's political views was not easy to gauge. Like his father he was a friend of the peasantry and the burghers, the parts of society that most disliked King Oda but Sture the Younger did not appear to desire a crown for himself or independence for Tor. But many others thought differently. In Sørlandet and southern Tor the Svarte family was stirring up resentment against the crown. Sture the Younger had to lead an army against the Svarte's only to be defeated. Rumblings abounded Tor. If the weak regent would not lead an uprising then perhaps he should make way for those who would, many said. After Vagn Akisson of the Svarte family died in exile Sørlandet erupted in rebellion. Sture the Younger was ineffectual in responding to this and in the last year of King Oda's life tensions rose throughout the Torian provinces of the kingdom.

When news of Oda's death reached Rodnar a riotous celebration broke out. Sture the Younger considered abandoning the capital for Fornsigtun for fear of the people but was convinced by his wife to remain in the city. Mina appeared before the people and appealed for them to remain calm. They cheered for her and refrained from attacking the palace.

A royal election was arranged. Mina tried to convince her husband to run, but he preferred to back an Yngling prince. Mina for her part found some sympathy for her husband's predecessor as regent, Skjalmr Hvide, Jarl of Selhaland and governor of the seditious Sørlandet. Neither of the men would win. Instead Oda's daughter Talia Adura was elected. As news reached Rodnar the city erupted in fury. The uprising started in a strange place, the Admiralty. Unlike the Termain army which was dominated by Torians the Termain navy was traditionally dominate by Orians. But the naval base in Rodnar, perhaps driven by misogyny, perhaps by the belief that an Yngling king would have showered favor upon the armed force, rose against the new Queen. The people of Rodnar gladly joined in and soon the city was in open revolt. Sture the Younger decided to retreat to Fornsigtun. Mina begged and pleaded with her spouse to stay but he was determined to leave. Once in Fornsigtun he began organizing a response to the various uprisings that was now spreading throughout Tor. While he did not declare his allegiance to the lawfully elected new monarch Sture the Younger did not declare himself for the rebellion either. He urged calm and seemed to seek a political solution. From Fornsigtun he convened a council of the most prominent leaders of the five provinces to convene to debate the future of the realm. He then left with an army to deal with Vagn Akisson's widow and her army fo Svarte levies, leaving his wife in charge in Fornsigtun.

Mina Sture now had a choice to make. Do what was expected of her, remain at Fornsigtuna and welcome various dignitaries for her husband's council. Or take action. She choose the later. She left Fornsigtun with a few of her husband's household troops and marched towards Rodnar. She convened the free peasants of her husband's jarldom of Sweodeod to convene for a thing at the Sweathing field just outside Rodnar. When she arrived she found thousands of peasants, not just from Sweodeod but from other places as well. Exploiting her family's strong ties with the peasantry she spoke to the peasants asking them to support her husband and march on Rodnar and secure it for the regent. The peasants approved and hailed Mina as "their Gracious Princess" and marched on Rodnar. Some skirmishes broke out between the peasants and the rebels in Rodnar, but the rebels soon remembered that Mina Sture had once fed their city and happily welcomed her, leading her to the still standing royal palace. The navy was more skeptical at first, but as many of the officers had begun to have some second thoughts about their uprising (which had been started mostly by the rank and file) and the chaos that it had brought to Rodnar welcomed the prospect of some stability under the Sture regent of Tor or his wife. At the royal palace Mina delivered a short speech to an assembly of dignitaries declaring her intention to support her husband and his wish to hold a council. But Sture the Younger's idea for a small council of nobles held at Fornsigtun in Mina's telling became a convocation of all the estates, Nobles, Burghers and Peasants form all five northern provinces held at Rodnar with broad authority to decide the future of the five northern provinces. Soon forty two men and Mina Sture declared the convocation of the Diet of Rodnar to govern Tor along the Regent and assume responsibilities for all affairs of state. Beyond that there was stark differences between the attendees at the impromptu conference. Some, no doubt encouraged by the boisterous crowds cheering the Sture family was all but ready to place a golden crown on Mina's head and declare Sture the Younger as the first king of and independent Kingdom of Tor. Others demanded that the Diet should declare the election of Talia Adura unlawful (citing some very dubious legal principles) and call for an Yngling king to be installed on the throne of Termain. Others still said that they did not care for Adura as queen but that negotiations might be the best course of action.

Mina herself took little part in the political debates of this impromptu conference, rather tending to organizing the Diet. She saw to it that letters was dispatched to every part of the five provinces of Tor calling for leaders to come to Rodnar. She also tried to establish some order in Rodnar and calm the rebellious town folks and her own peasants down. Then news reached her that her husband had died in battle with the Svarte armies in Sørlandet. His army remained intact however just north of Heidrby near the border with Orias. It, and the rest of Tor promised to send representatives to the Diet.

Mina had never loved her husband. He had made that impossible. But she mourned him for their two fatherless children. While she did not invite the warlike widow of Vagn Akisson to attend the Diet, she did write the Svarte family and implore them to partake. Soon people of all parts of Tor, people from Tor Proper, from Sørlandet, from Norrland, from Ostland and even from far away Øyjarnar and of all three estates began gathering for the Diet, while news reached Rodnar of local rebellious Things and Diets being organized in the provinces and jarldoms. In the meantime Mina, not a participant in the proceedings of the Diet, began organizing the defenses of Rodnar in the event that Talia Adura's force might launch an attack.
Goals: Advance the Diet of Tor, defend Rodnar, organize the rebellion.
Likes: Tor, her children, the Sture party.
Dislikes: Orian rule of Tor.

Great, thanks. I will try to put up the rest of the rebels (or at least their principal leader) today and then post in the IC tomorrow.

Name: Bartolomeo Ambrosio de' Albaspina e Keroualle, Grand Regent of Verantia
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Race/Species: Human (1/4 Elven blood)
Personality: Bartolomeo is a shrewd, cunning, and calculating politician above all else. Trained in court politics since his childhood, and having been traded away to a local Lord for fostering, he is very mistrusting towards all those who seek out to approach him, even close family members. Bartolomeo, having witnessed the decline of Albaspina rule under his predecessors, understood the fragility of power and the Machiavellian nature of all beneath him completely, so he values loyalty above all else. He is well-versed in Verantian culture and the diplomatic procedures, and is also an amicable and friendly person whenever he needs.

Sexual/Romantic preference: Unknown
Appearance: later
Bio:
Bartolomeo was born from the union between Duke Cosimo di Albaspina, then Grand Regent of Verantia, and Princess Catherine Marie de Keroualle, sister to the late King Victor Charles of Marseille. His father was a second son of a second son - very unlikely to reach the chair of Grand Regent, however, a series of political assasinations, natural deaths, and warfare exterminated the main Albaspina branch completely a decade before Cosimo took office. As was the custom in Verantia, an Albaspina would always guaranteed to reign as Grand Regent, although officially the nation operates as a confederacy. It is because of all the Verantian states, the city of Montalban - seat of the House of Albaspina for hundreds of years - is one of the largest cities and also the most prosperous. The Albaspina commanded the whole Valle Verde area, the fertile, lush river valley that formed the border between Verantia and Marseille, which acts as the primary trade route to the north and also as Verantia's breadbasket. This domineering importance gave them significantly high status between all Verantian rulers, and a primus inter pares situation put the Albaspinas on the forefront of any Grand Regent election.

It is not uncommon for the Albaspina rulers to marry relatives of Paralian monarchs, particularly those of Marseille, a large country just north of the border. Part of this is done to secure the Verantian borders, another part to increase the Albaspinas' own prestige and standing; another part just because the Keroualles wanted to mess with their neighbors to the south. As one of the richest nations in Paralia in terms of trade, Verantia's influence could not be ignored; neither could it ignore the influence of all neighbouring states. However, Bartolomeo was born in a particularly troubling time. His father Cosimo de' Albaspina just won the Grand Regent position earlier against his brother, Pietro de' Albaspina, seven years ago. Pietro, which Cosimo made Count of Rovigna - the primary seaport on Verantia's southern part bordering Sorosa - held a deep resentment towards Cosimo because of this. In response, Cosimo gathered his own supporters and coerced the Grand Assembly - Verantia's legislature - to approve laws limiting states' powers in the administration of trade. The significant backlash made Cosimo wary; so when a marriage proposal for Catherine Marie, one of the King of Marseille's youngest daughters presented itself, Cosimo took no time to forge an alliance.

Realizing Cosimo has Marseille on his back through marriage, Pietro backed away for a moment, especially when Victor Charles the Warmonger took up Marseille's throne. Seven years went with relative peace; Catherine Marie gave Cosimo his eldest son Niccolo, trade-limiting laws are rolled back, and Pietro seemed content lurking in his estate. But one day, it seems, Pietro was fed up and took matters into his own hands; he fabricated news about Cosimo proposing the introduction of another trading law, which stirred most of Pietro's supporters against him. Other lords knew better. Pietro rode with ten thousand troops into Vermagna, demanding Cosimo's resignation, right when Bartolomeo was born. He laid out a siege and sent catapults after the Palazzo dei Regenti, the seat of government, while Cosimo hid and sent couriers for help. Bartolomeo and his mother barely survived a massive stone that destroyed the Palace's premier fountain. Help subsequently arrived; in a last desperate moment, Pietro sneaked up the the Palace in attempt to kill his brother. He missed and Cosimo lived, and was thrown in the dungeons afterwards. Realizing Rovigna has no ruler, Cosimo assigned the baby Bartolomeo as Duke, with Catherine Marie ruling in his stead as Duchess Regent. Cosimo also sent his trusted advisor Klaus von Mitterand, an Orian merchant which was well-versed in the affairs of Rovigna since he lived there.

Bartolomeo grew estranged from all his family except for his mother. Even then, his mother was too preoccupied with discussing municipal affairs with the Mayor and Von Mitterand. He did though heard of the achievements of his older brother Niccolo the Magnificent, the Young Grace, the would-be Grand Regent which would finally lead Verantia to the days of peace after being plagued with power-grabs across the last several decades. Bartolomeo, as such, did not want to be left out of the spotlight; he also involved himself heavily in public appearances and toured the Verantian countryside alongside the Duchess Regent. He took up all education that young nobles were expectedof; however, Bartolomeo abhors swordfighting and excels at archery instead. Since his early days Bartolomeo often thought he was more suited to be a scholar than a Duke; her preferred studying about magic, history, and alchemy; he also extensively travelled with Klaus von Mitterand's naval dispatched when allowed.

Things started to go awry when Cosimo di Albaspina was found to be in affair with the daughter of a minor Verantian Duke, angering both Catherine Marie and his son Niccolo at the same time. Cosimo tried, to no avail, to defend himself; there were cries for his resignation, and "Pietro was right". Fortunately for the Albaspinas, Cosimo soon died of a stroke - too much grilled wild boars and fat roasted ducks clotted his heart. Catherine Marie immediately travelled to Vermagna, as per Cosimo's last wishes for her to be made Leader of the Grand Assembly on his death. Shortly after, as expected, Niccolo di Albaspina was elected Grand Regent. Catherine Marie ruled Verantia in all but name, effectively making Verantia an extension of Marseille. The nation became heavily entangled with Victor Charles' various wars; Catherine Marie received numerous Verantian nobles seeking her attention, but she largely ignored them. All the game of thrones at the capital made Bartolomeo neglected as his mother's attention was on Verantia's diplomatic relations, as well as Grand Regent Niccolo, who was groomed to be the perfect knight all the time; the symbol of Verantian strength and prestige. Subsequently, Bartolomeo turned more and more away from his family, making quick friends with the Mayor of Rovigna's children and the heirs of powerful merchants instead. He assumed the position of Duke immediately with Von Mitterand as his right hand.

Indeed, Niccolo became the prime representative of Verantia to the whole world, at the time. Catherine Marie supplied her brother with gold and eight thousand condottieri in a war, and pledged further support when the King of Marseille needed it. Niccolo led the ten-thousand strong Verantian delegation into war, and managed to achieve victory for Marseille. The anti-Marseille sentiment gradually became stronger as Verantian nobles were loath going into war only to satisfy the Grand Regent's mother's brother. And so, an old friend of Pietro di Albaspina's revolted against central rule, which is particularly dangerous as such actions could provoke others to rebel as well. Catherine Marie swiftly acted and sent Niccolo as well as nine thousand troops against the rebel baron. Other principal Duchies, including Bartolomeo's - the only other Albaspina domain at the time - were coerced to fight as well. Bartolomeo was reluctant, but the Rovigna population were staunch loyalists, so he decided to go into battle after all.

The Rovigna force were split into two parts; vanguard led by Bartolomeo himself, and central army led by Von Mitterand. However, they arrived into battle quite late. Grand Regent Niccolo's position was extremely fragile, sandwiched between city wall and an advancing rebel cavalry. It is either Bartolomeo attacked immediately, or his brother dies. However, the position did not allow Bartolomeo to march straight into Niccolo's regiment. He would be rained with arrows and ballistas if he did. Instead Bartolomeo took his vanguard to a nearby hill and commanded archers to fire at the advancing cavalry instead, thinning their forces one by one. He was helpless to see his brother's forces battered out by volleys and horses over and over again. Once he had the news that Von Mitterand's army was nearing then Bartolomeo commanded a straight descending march towards the cavalry, with arquebuses on front, archers behind, and a sparse shield wall covering them. The rebel cavalry, entrapped with pikes on one side and guns on the other, panicked out. Their stampede inflicted heavy casualties upon Bartolomeo's vanguard, and he was nearly crushed if not because the timely intervention of a soldier. Once the stampede finished, however, Von Mitterand's army advanced against them and finished the rebels for good.

Bartolomeo found his brother's body in the aftermath. Despite them being estranged, Bartolomeo still felt an affection towards him, and carried his brother himself all the way towards Vermagna. Catherine Marie, upon receiving news of the aftermath inside Palazzo dei Regenti, refused to talk and locked herself up in a chamber with grief. Bartolomeo soon found himself the subject of popular support on how the then seventeen year old Duke singlehandedly crushed a rebellion, though he felt that most of the work was done by Von Mitterand. Nevertheless, Bartolomeo capitalized highly from this; he spent heavily on Niccolo's funeral - a spectacularly grand affair - and campaigned indirectly through his key supporters on his public image. During the fortnight he spent of Vermagna following Niccolo's funeral, he purged the court of Catherine Marie's influence, and installed his own personnel into key national offices. The transition following his election was smooth as polished marble; now, Bartolomeo held the throne of Paralia's richest trading and marine empire.

Goals: Being an Iron Fist ruler (purging all dissent that remained from his brother's rule), maintaining the current peace and stability in Verantia, placating the Verantian nobles enough, expanding the trade activity to put other trading nations out of business
Likes: Books, Archery, Guns, Ships (and naval instruments), Alchemy, Wine, fine racing horses
Dislikes: Swordfight, his Mother, Marseille (to an extent and in subtlety), dissent and disloyalty towards his rule
Theme Song: -
Powers/Abilities: Skilled archer, very minor magical ability (resisting mind-control and such things) due to Elven blood

I wonder what Bartolomeo di Albaspina's reactions would be towards this. He wanted to stay out of war, like Charles did, but his chief advisor is Orian. Plus he's cousins with Charles as well, and that makes him a distant cousin of Tali's.
