"Trade is the slow killer of jobs, but tariffs are the killer of what jobs we have left. My plan is to re-evaluate all existing trade deals against environmental and labor standards, while simultaneously funding infrastructure plans that offer manual handling and manufacturing jobs here. Every project funded by a Federal Grant must use American domestic materials or federal money gets withheld. We've got to go one step further though, manufacturing here will dry up not due to trade but automation. We need the workforce of the twenty-first century equipped with the skills to compete, that means an education system that works for us all. Oval Office, White House
Washington, D.C.

Richard George Tawney
December 14, 2019

Image

Ever since the President's announcement the White House Staff has done its best to prepare for this event. Rearranging the furniture, preparing a space for the media as well as creating a detailed chart of where everyone should stand was a labor intensive effort, spearheaded by the President's newly appointed Chief of Staff. Present on site since early morning Daniel Burton wanted to make sure everything would be in order. The drapes, the pens, the papers everything had to be in it's rightful place for the event to work.

Meanwhile...

In the meantime the President was in his official residence on the uppermost floor of the White House. Reading over the statement especially prepared for the occasion once again, he wanted to make sure everything ran smoothly on his end. As time passed and the event drew closer and closer Richard made a decision. He decided to undertake one of the riskiest maneuvers in Washington, D.C., one that could potentially bring down a politician of any stature. He decided to ask for a favor. Thankfully, he had the right instinct to ask a person close to him, someone who wouldn't betray him, and even if she did - she would go down with him.

"Caroline" Tawney turned to his wife. "Can I ask you a favor?"

"Of course, what is it?" she replied, slightly surprised. Her husband didn't often ask her for favors.

"Well, as you know we're having a big event today and I could use a helping hand." Richard started. "I am supposed to speak with Speaker Simone after the event, but other congressional leaders will be present, particularly the Senate Majority Leader Robert Warrick. I don't want him to feel neglected. Don't worry, he's one of ours, he's not going to ask any hard questions."

Caroline was shocked. "I... that's a lot. I don't have a lot of experience with those things..."

"Don't worry, it will mostly be small talk."

"Yeah, but what am I supposed to talk with him about?" she asked anxiously.

"I will have someone brief you--"

"Brief me? I hope it's not something very secretive."

"No, don't worry. It's mostly feel-good stuff. How the President, that is me, can't wait to work with the Senate and all that stuff. Well that and--" Richard paused.

"And?"

"Well, I don't want you to feel pressured or anything, but... there's an open Senate seat in Tennessee."

"Open?"

"Yes, open. The incumbent Senator will soon retire, he's not running for re-election."

"And you want to run?" Caroline asked naively.

"Oh, no." Richard replied. "I don't have it in me anymore. Campaigns aren't for me, but perhaps we could find a suitable candidate."

A short period of silence ensued as Caroline tried to make sense of Richard's words as he continued to look at her.

"You can't be serious." she finally replied. "Like...?" Caroline asked pointing her finger at herself.

"I mean, if you want to."

"I don't know, I'll have to think about it."

"Of course. But you should make your decision before meeting with Warrick." Richard checked his watch. "Now, if you'll excuse me. I have to get ready for presidential duties. See you in the Oval."

Caroline placed a kiss on Richard's cheek before he exited the bedroom. Left on her own she wasn't sure what to do, a sense of dread and anxiety crept up on her. Could it be that after all these years she could finally have something of her own? Outside of the family that is? Her name on a yard sign, in the newspaper, her face on TV screens in every corner of the country labeled "Senator". It's been many years since she stopped practicing law, her dreams of independence dashed by her pregnancies. Caroline never expected for this to happen. She felt lost yet hopeful all at the same time. Scared, yet optimistic. She took a deep breath before making her way down.

Sometime later...

"I will keep the file for the duration of the event, after which I will give it back to you, m'am." An aide said to Caroline.

"Oh please, sweetie, it's no issue. I can hold it myself."

"I'm sorry, m'am, but I've been instructed to hold the file during the event."

"Oh, well." Caroline responded, slightly dissapointed.

In the meantime Daniel Burton started making rounds around the room, ordering more or less politely everyone to take the appropriate spots. Soon enough everyone made it to their designated position and the President was cleared to enter. Richard entered the Oval Office with an optimistic look on his face, shaking a few hands and hugging his wife Caroline on his way to the Resolute Desk.

He took a seat before speaking.

Thank you all for coming.

Today I have the utmost privilege to sign my first piece of legislation into law. The Relief Act that is the result of hard and quick work of our nation’s legislators, especially Congressman Jason Evander of the great state of South Dakota as well as Senator Jillian Dayton of Virginia, the homestate of one of our nation’s first President, the man who inspired our nation and a great patriot, George Washington.

The piece of legislation that I am about to sign is a result of bipartisan work, so rarely seen in recent times. I am proud to say that in a time of a great emergency both parties and both chambers of Congress came together to provide relief to numerous Americans affected by recent natural disasters. Having spent a number of years in Congress I can say that such work must have been a tremendous undertaking, taking into account various interests and balancing the factions involved in making the passage of the bill possible. I would like to thank Speaker Caroline Simone for ensuring the safe passage of the bill in the House, as well as Senate Majority Leader Robert Warrick, a great legislator and the man who made many of President Wolf’s legislative victories possible. As you can see both of these leaders are present today to witness this important occasion.

The bill that I am about to sign into law represents a great number of American values present in every corner of our great nation. The text of the Relief Act allows for greater crowdfunding measures, giving the American people greater ability to aid their fellow countrymen. It is important in times of trial to come together as a nation to aid those whose livelihoods were taken away by the unstoppable force of nature and I strongly urge those listening to partake in the relief effort themselves.

Moreover, the Relief Act sets an important goal for our government. It’s provisions were written with a more vigilant and active government in mind, one that seeks to protect its citizens from harm rather than taking action after disaster. Preventing natural disasters such as wildfires and floods will allow for a more fiscally conscious government, one that will not have to spend endless amounts of money on providing financial aid to every household that would be otherwise ruined.

It cannot be understated how important this act is. As I sign it into law, let’s make sure that the spirit of coordination and cooperation that made this bill possible will be as permanent as the ink of my signature.

With that, Richard picked up a pen and signed the bill, letter by letter, each with a different pen that was later handed to the people in the room. Speaker Simone, Senator Warrick as well as Congressman Volker among others were given a nice pen to enjoy. Soon enough, the Relief Act became law.

Thomas Volker

Farmington, Missouri

December 22nd, 2019

It was still fairly dark outside when Thomas woke on what was his 57th birthday, a matter which he attempted to force out of his mind to a significant extent in the days running up to it, alas, that attempt failed. After going through the initial daily motions that formed his routine, and managing to do so quietly with Mrs Volker in the next room, Thomas settled on starting the day in the lounge with a light viewing of Fox News. Admittedly, the past week or so had went better than expected on Thomas' side of things all things considered. He thought for certain that the event which he had dreaded might happen following the President's announcement back in January, namely his resignation, would turn out to be much more fractious that currently. Still, it was early days yet he thought to himself cautiously as he looked out of the window. By this point, Farmington was still empty of residents outside, particularly as a large part of the city was blanketed in a thick layer of snow, as it usually was at this time of year. Nevertheless, the House Minority Leader decided to use the time he had to himself to work on a task that up until then he hadn't have much thought to, namely wrapping Mrs Volker's gift for the upcoming holiday, something which caused the elder Volker to grimace, if there was anything that he disliked the least for the Christmas period, it was the wrapping, despite that he pressed on with the task at hand.

Just as Thomas was concluding the wrapping, his personal cell phone started ringing, having a vague idea as to who might be calling at this time, picking up the phone he answered the call.

"Thomas?" The voice on the other side of the phone opened, a voice which the House Minority Leader could make out straight away, his father.

"Morning Sir, how have you been since the last time we spoke?" Thomas asked.

"Well, things have been uneventful here, I see Governor Prendergast dropped out..."

"Yes, that was truly unfortunate to see, I must admit, I'm still weighing up my options now that it's taken place." The younger Volker said, feeling as if his father's previous comment had left him strongly winded on account of the feeling of unworthiness that he had often felt in comparison to the more elder Volker.

"Well, I'm thinking I'll probably vote for Porter in the primary, he seems like a strong, honest man, particularly with him also being a veteran."

Thomas grimaced privately as he heard Randall speak before replying.

"But, Sir, aren't you concerned that if Porter wins the nomination the Wolf agenda might be endangered through making it easier for a Democrat to win the general?"

"Well, Richardson seems too much like Mitter, and we both know how that went in 2012, at least with Porter I definitely know we'll get the wall built and some tougher immigration enforcement like we've managed to get the beginnings of under Wolf, honestly, it was a shame to see him resign."

"Yes, it was. Still, at least we've still got some strong patriotic leadership in President Tawney."

"Perhaps, I'll make my decision on that in a couple of months time. Still, you better keep in mind what I said to you last time, especially now that Prendergast has dropped out Thomas."

"Of course, Sir, anyway, I was wondering, would you and Ma'am be interested in having dinner round here on Christmas? I'm sure Torrie wouldn't mind."

"Well, I'll have to see about that, I think it'll be fine to do though, thank you."

"I'll be sure to mention to her about it today. Anyway, I think I should probably get back to what I was doing, busy day ahead."

"Oh yes, that reminds me, happy birthday Thomas."

"Thank you, Sir. Take care." Thomas said, ending the phone-call as he finished the wrapping before moving onto the rest of the day ahead, hoping that things would go well moving forward.

Kim sighed and shook Richardson's hand. "No, Governor, thank you for meeting me. I know I said some...things, about you, when I launched this vainglorious campaign of mine. I apologize."

She looked away, cracked her jaw, and sighed again. "I've been prescribed medication for my bipolar disorder. Lithium, to fight the manic episodes. It's...been tough, coming to terms with this. My husband's been lovely, wonderful about it."

The Senator fixed the Governor with a look as she kept speaking. "But I did want to apologize for badmouthing you so publicly. I can't blame that on my illness--I wanted attention, fast. So I'm truly sorry."

Press Release from the Office of Public Affairs

Today, Attorney General Michael Jones sent a memo to all United States Attorney's Offices rolling out step two of his new 'Tough on Drugs' Initiative.

This initiative, which was promised during his confirmation hearing, will specifically target drug dealers and drug producers by seeking the maximum possible penalty for their crimes. They will also be charged with any murders relating to the consumption of drugs produced or sold by these subjects. It will be a major step forward in the war on drugs.

On this matter, this is what Attorney General Michael Jones had to say:

"For too long, the previous administration ignored the crimes committed by both drug dealers and drug producers. This ends today. From today, I am instructing all U.S Attorney's to seek the maximum penalty for any and all drug-related crimes concerning drug dealers and drug suppliers. They will also be seeking a second-degree murder charge on the above if the drug consumption leads to the death of the user. Now is the time to act and go after these criminals who prey on the most vulnerable. We have to let people know that the United States is tough on drugs. We will no longer let drugs that ruin peoples lives run rampant on our streets, drugs like Heroin, Meth and Marijuana must be dealt with, with a head-on approach."

This new initiative will come into full force on December 17th, 2019.

She cleared her throat. "Now, I know everyone claims to hate this business, but I have to ask...would there be room in a Richardson administration for a crazy lady from Kansas?"

Kimberly nodded slowly and smiled, almost imperceptibly, before leaning up to tap her assistant on the shoulder. "Take us 'round the block, Max, they'll think we're drug dealers if we just sit here."

"So, Governor," she said, adjusting herself as Max pulled into the lane, "let's talk shop, shall we? Like I said in my email, I'm going to endorse you. Porter is an existential threat to the party and the Republic, and the fastest way to get Levi Murphy elected. I know you and I don't agree on everything, but I believe you're a good man and would make a solid choice for President."

She cleared her throat. "Now, I know everyone claims to hate this business, but I have to ask...would there be room in a Richardson administration for a crazy lady from Kansas?"

"Their would indeed be a spot for you, but I don't suppose you could be persuaded to run for re-election?"

"I definitely could," Kim chuckled, "considering I was already planning on it. I've spent most of the past month making sure nobody thinks about primarying me. And I don't think there are more than two or three Democrats in Kansas that could beat me in the general. Maybe Marshall, but that's not happening this year."

"I understand that," Kim said, her voice a touch harder, more insistent, "but I'd still like to know."

Richardson spoke with real sincerity and empathy in his voice, as a man who could count on one hand the number of times he had missed church in his life he took prayer seriously

"Grateful for your sympathy as I am, Nate, I know that's not why you're here. You want me to win the primary for you." He sighed, leaning back in his chair. "I've still not forgiven you for what your wife said, intentionally or not, at that women's event. And I don't think Arnold Junior will ever forgive you for what you said on the debate stage, and I care about that boy." He frowned. "Do you want me to spare your feelings, Nate, or do you want me to put it to you bluntly?"

If a sitting senator is going to criticize someone, he should at least get their name right. Three times getting the same name wrong, someone teach Everitt Colbert to sound out his words so he spells them right. It's Baharia man!

“My wife never said it” Nate shook his head “I won’t try and convince you of the that... but I spoke to wolf senior, Wolf jr, Lilyana and Eliza... they all believe or forgive my wife for that... I am here to make peace and make sure the party comes together at the end of the election.... and to make sure Porter is not the nominee. But yes I would most definitely want your endorsement but I care more about just having peace in the party. But anyhow... give it to me bluntly.”
