So far, President Tawney has been proactive, cooperative and open to discussion, and I should have more to report in my next press conference after the Christmas recess. Jonathan Wilson stood before the podium, inside a hall filled with more than fifty people. It was his second public event in only a few days, a sign that he was heating up his campaign. He was the main speaker of the Forward Party’s “End the War on Drugs” event. Clearing his throat, he began in earner his speech.

“I welcome you to this important event organized by the Forward Party to highlight the damage caused on American society by the failed so-called war on drugs. One-fifth of the incarcerated population is serving time for a drug charge, and this has had near zero effect on public safety or substance misuse rates; in fact incarcerated people are more likely to die from overdose after release than the general population. Lives are destroyed and people stigmatized for no reason whatsoever aside!”

“We cannot ignore the racial elements in this war on drugs. Black Americans are four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana charges and six times more likely to be incarcerated for drug related offenses than their white peers. Black Americans convicted on drug related charges are likely to be sentenced the same amount of time as whites are for violent crimes. It is time to admit that the war on drugs is a racist enterprise!”

“Even if we view it though the lens of economics, the war on drugs has been a disaster. It has cost the US since 1971 1 trillion dollars. Yes, you heard that right; 1 trillion dollars! In fact, it is estimated the federal government wastes 3.3 billion dollars annually to incarcerate people for drug related offenses. Imagine if instead of wasting that money to jail people for victimless crimes, we cut taxes for the middle class?”

“It is time to put an end to this mindless enterprise. As President, I would legalize cannabis and decriminalize opioids for personal use. Portugal is a good example of how such legalization has positive effects. I would pardon on day one all prisoners serving sentences for low-level, non-violent marijuana offenses.”

“It is also time for a health-based, rather than criminalization-based, approach on drug issues. I would implement on national level a syringe access program to provide people with clean injection equipment to prevent syringe sharing, thus reducing blood-borne diseases. Washington state implemented such a program and saw an 80% drop of new diagnoses of hepatitis B and C while the District of Columbia, which has also implemented a syringe access program, saw 70% decrease in HIV infections and saved more than 44 million dollars in health-related costs. In fact, it is estimated that such a program would yield a return on investment of $7.58 for every dollar spent.”

“We also need supervised injection facilities nationally, which provide safe, hygienic places where individuals can inject preobtained drugs under medical supervision, allowing for connection of those individuals with social services and leading to a reduction of overdose fatalities and saving millions of dollars in healthcare costs.”

“It is time we moved forward! With a bold vision of the future and radical solutions to our problems. The Forward Party isn’t afraid to break with the status quo and call out failed policies. That’s why I call young people to support us! Do you trust the Republicans and Democrats who oversaw decades of this failed policy to solve this problem? Isn’t that a waste of your vote? Vote for change. Support us so we can put an end to this racist, money-wasting sham of a war.”

The elder Alaskan sat in her office, a number of files already packed in a suitcase in the corner of her office. She was ready to depart back home. She was ready for the year to be over. Well, perhaps not entirely. Frankie would have to contend with re-election but as of now, it was clear that the departure of Arnold Wolf would play favorably for her. It had saved her from having to contend with him further but rather centering her message as one of effectiveness, no matter who was president. Plus, it did not hurt that the GOP had grown weary of financing millions against her despite her popularity. And the recent slew of polling had revealed she was still above water, well within the margin of capturing the necessary margin to win. No opponent had emerged against her and she doubted whoever it would be would have her political shrewdness.

Alas, she had already sought to unite her coalition once more. Preparing a number of town halls with key constituencies were on the calendar. From meeting with veterans and active duty soldiers across Alaska to native communities along the coasts, to returning to Fairbanks and Anchorage to shore up younger voters and the few Democratic strongholds. Her only real obstacle would perhaps be a challenge from the surprisingly resourceful Libertarian party or some energetic progressive primary fight. But already her sources on the ground had quickly sought to diminish any dangerous third party runs, hoping to ensure if there was a libertarian, they would fight with the republican more than with her. And as for a potential primary, key endorsements from left-leaning groups were being pulled in as well as a number of more moderate coalitions too, to hopefully continue to emulate her image as a consensus-maker.

But perhaps her biggest hurdle would be the financial one, hence her recent decision to focus this upcoming year on ensuring a maximum deregulation of oil drilling, a strategic move devised by her campaign to stop the flow of cash to her opponent. While she doubted these big companies would suddenly fund her, they would at least weigh their chances and decide that investing against her wasn't worth it either. And it was this same thinking that was the reason she was in this particular meeting room. Frankie had met with Jillian dozens of times and found her a delight. But with cracks already forming in the Baharia-type coalition she would need to recreate, the elder Alaskan had also chosen to schedule a meeting with the frontrunner from the other side, Nathaniel Richardson. It would serve as another point of her bipartisanship for her campaign but also aid in hopefully finding a friend in the White House if Dayton fell below the mark. So she waited in her office, as her staff would escort the governor in once he arrived.

After what was an rather eventful week on the Hill, moreso than usual, the time came once more for Volker to hold his ‘national townhall’. He knew that questions would probably be asked of the President, and of the new administration, nevertheless, the Missourian planned what he would say as the camera was being set up and, once he knew the camera was live streaming, he began.

“Good afternoon America, I’m Thomas Volker, Congressman for Missouri’s 8th Congressional District and House Minority Leader. Next year will see the American people go to the polls and vote in one of the most significant elections in recent memory. That is why we, the Republican Party will now be holding a weekly national townhall, so you have the opportunity to have the questions that you want answering answered by patriotic citizen legislators who come from and value all of this great country, not just New York City or New England and will substantiate that each and every day of the 117th Congress. Feel free to post any questions that you have in the livestream chat and I’ll be sure to answer them.”

@RalphinChief Will the Republican Party do more this year to give the middle class a tax break?

“That is a good question, Sir. We, the congressional Republican Party, will seek both in Congress and on the campaign trail to support the middle and working classes to the fullest of our ability as citizen legislators. One way that we will do this is through making the Wolf tax cuts, which the 115th Congress passed in 2017, permanent, allowing countless Americans to keep more of the money that they have earned, and to continue the economic prosperity engineered by the Wolf administration. Furthermore, we also intend to take those tax cuts further through a greater streamlining of retirement savings accounts by creating a universal savings account, empowering middle-class Americans to save and accumulate more of their hard-earned wealth.”

Senator Kimberly Dunbar
Des Moines, Iowa

After a flight from Wichita and a layover in Atlanta for reasons beyond her understanding, Kim arrived in Iowa to meet Governor Richardson.

She rented a low-key car and, with her assistant Max driving, set off, pulling up outside the building Richardson had specified.

@JasonFromSD

How ya doin, boss?

Jason chuckled a bit to himself as he sent the tweet. Nothing was more amusing to him than his own antics, as minor as they were. He then pivoted to his computer, and banged out a couple emails to colleagues.

To: Senator Jillian Dayton
From: Rep. Jason Evander

Sen. Dayton,

When can I expect the Mountaintop Mining Act to arrive on the House docket?

Respectfully,
Rep. Evander

To: Rep. Diane Paulson, Rep. Kathleen Nez, Rep. Theodore Vohoffsky, Rep. Jamal Patrick
From: Rep. Jason Evander

Colleagues,

I am writing to you to discuss the flag-burning amendment proposed by Rep. Edwards. I believe you all to be principled, patriotic individuals, who share my disgust at this fascistic amendment and its consequences on our rights to free speech.

I know the amendment would probably not pass the House, but I want to bring it up and kill it as soon as possible, from both sides of the aisle.

I understand that this email is out of the blue, however, the issue has been bothering me for quite a bit and I wanted to reach out and test the waters.

Respectfully,
Rep. Jason Evander

"Hello Governor, please sit down. And please, call me Frankie." she responded with a smile as she offered her hand. "I'm glad you were able to take a break from your busy campaign schedule to come and talk with me. I hope I can get to know where your priorities lie and perhaps you too can learn where my own goals are. Because despite our different views and different letters next to our names on the ballot, I have always been a strong believer Americans deserve public servants that work together, not against each other." It was a rather simplistic statement, almost cut straight from some interview she had given or a townhall, but it was more representative of her strongly held belief to cut through the bull and get to work. Trite but authentic.
