Meeting with Governor Voorhees
August 29th, 2019
New York City

Jillian took a sip of water before answering.

"If we lower costs, if we can make this Medicare plan as competitive as the so-called free-market, then it'll be clear we can cover more people under this plan. The opt-in decision, the mandate issue, is settled. But it's not politically tenable right now. I want to move towards everyone having healthcare. But not until our plan can do better than other ones can we advocate for everyone to come on board. This is the next step. We established the ACA to expand coverage and set standards. Now we're going to strength coverage and increase coverage again. And then the next logical step would be Medicare for All. But I also want to be clear, that if a single-payer system did pass Congress, I would sign it."

Selina frowned slightly.

"Now, you know I've supported raising the minimum wage to $15, where to you stand on that issue?"

Let's not forget that Bernie Porter opposed the DFLA when it was introduced. Him saying otherwise is simply a lie.

Absolutely disgraceful of Diane Paulson - a sitting congresswoman who want to be President of the United States - to use such foul language in front of our children on live TV. Shame on her.

Meeting with Governor Voorhees
August 29th, 2019
New York City

Jillian took a breath before answering.

"Well, before I answer that, I mean, I just want to add that I'm one of the few candidates who wants to do more than just reforming the Affordable Care Act or who would outright support an eventual Medicare For All. But as for a minimum wage, I plan to fight for to $15 over a three or five year span of time. With an immediate first year increase to $12.50, with support for small businesses and other establishments."

Female Republican lawmakers should be role models for our daughters, an example of the opportunities conservatism supply to women. Diane Paulson's foul language, directed at a respected veteran, should outrage every American. The daughters of America are not served by such a delinquent role model. For someone who worked with Nancy Reagan, she obviously learned nothing of that great First Lady of the Republic's dignity and esteem.

I think it is clear from the debate that former Secretary Porter has turned his back on the good work that President Wolf has done over the past three years in fighting for greater religious freedom within the United States as well as making a real difference to the position of the American farmer and the wider US economy.

Consequently, I think this debate clearly shows that the only candidate that is both willing and able to continue the winning Wolf agenda that this country has benefited from over the past three years is Governor Prendergast.

Martha Prendergast smiled at the exchange. Her husband and that nasty swearing woman Paulson were tearing Porter apart. She hoped this would destroy any of Porter’s chances of gaining evangelical voters.

Dayton For President Retail & Rally
August 23th to 25th, 2019
Osage & Rogers Counties, Oklahoma

There was a need to reconnect with parts of the country that felt ignored and that was the purpose of Dayton's newest swing through the state. She had departed from Tulsa proper towards a part of the state that had definitely seen better days. Her main purpose was to help spread her mission and message of Fairness First, with an emphasis on the inequality across the nation. She began by visiting Rogers County, touring various places within the county limits. She focused on a number of tours of small businesses in the small towns, making sure to speak with owners and touting her support for strengthening the economy, as well as why she felt she could make real change happen, like supporting small businesses offer higher minimum wages, expand paid leave, and better healthcare standards. This was a particular emphasis in the county seat of Claremore, where she toured the Main Street development and where she spoke on her support for putting more money in the hands of these communities and not Wall Street. She played up this duality before returning back to the more suburban and residential areas of the county. She spoke with local women's groups and some more progressive activist groups, touting her credentials as the leading female candidate and her support for real change, especially in regards to social policies like codifying abortion rights and creating anti-discrimination measures for all groups.

As the next day came, she attended a midday Drinks with Dayton event in Owasso. She held the event to help bring in a number of grassroots and community supporters, finding herself with a number of working-class Americans. She spoke on healthcare and the need to make it more affordable, as well as focusing on education reform. The state's own failures in addressing teachers lent itself to a major talking point for her and she also made sure to explain her gubernatorial record in making college affordable for everyone. This was an especially resounding message and with her connection between state issues and her national recognition on the topic, it was a way to help pull voters to herself. She then departed to a visit with local elected officials and families who had been affected by tornadoes. It was a round table event organized by her team to help hear out potential policies and changes towards tornado disaster relief and addressing the infrastructure weakness that made the problem worse. It was a way to help continue the image of herself as a leader who listen and who was willing to make a plan for everything, including issues that might not affect most Americans. By the last day, she headed to Osage county, this time with a focus less on the suburban base she was popular with but to speaking directly to a marginalized community. She organized a rally at a local community and tribal center at the county seat and the main headquarters of the Osage Nation. After being introduced by local leaders, she spoke.

"Hello Pawhuska and hello everyone! As I’ve met and reconnected with so many Native leaders today, right here in your own community, I haven't stopped thinking about how lucky this country is right now. We may have systemic Native discrimination, we may have outright racism towards the original Americans, and we may have people upholding this status quo...but we also have effective leaders now. We have strong organizations and meetings like the forum I attended just a few days ago. We have a way to fight back now. And most of this country is ready to hear that message, ready to fight back. We can’t keep stumbling along with a President that decides things on a whim or with a government that ignores the plight of Native Americans. Rather, we’re ready to give this country a shot at getting back on track! When looking to the future, we must remember the lessons of the past and of the present. As a Senator, I have taken these questions in hand, I have asked these questions, and I too have tried to answer these questions by writing legislation, by standing for American values. But now, the honesty, the peace, and the indigenous unity in this country has been eroded in favor of belittlement, ignorance, and bigotry by our leaders. By our President. The future of the United States is now in our hands once again. Our future could be exciting or scary, hopeful or uncertain, bright or dark, racially divided or healing our hate. Our future could be restoring the true home of the brave and land of the free for Natives too or repeating the mistakes of the past and upholding the injustices of the present once again. Today, there are those who believe that the only way forward is by looking to the past, a past full of genocide, poverty, and looking the other way. But these are not real ideas or solutions that can solve our actual problems right now. The future of our United States is in our hands, it is in the hands of voters, of citizens, of all Americans."

“Their ideas guided our nation, they fought for those ideas in the arena of ideas, not an arena of soundbites or personalities. It is in that history that I am reminded of the spirit of the American people, a spirit that to this day is the reason why we are a hardworking, just, and mighty people. I believe the time is now to put fairness first. Every American child born today, tomorrow or whenever should not have their fate decided by the injustices of the past against their ancestors, ancestors who were the original caretakers of this great nation! It is unfair that multimillionaires buy their children’s admissions into Ivy League schools while our marginalized Natives must work harder to earn their keep, to even sustain a livelihood on their own lands and reservations! It is unfair that your zip code, your reservation, can determine your life expectancy or wealth because of historical genocide and displacement! It is unfair that even our Native veterans return to find themselves ignored by a system supposedly designed to prioritize their concerns! It is unfair that so many Native workers live paycheck to paycheck at higher rates while Native owned businesses are also far and few! It is unfair that Native Americans have their homes, their communities, their hospitals in such disrepair, unable to truly take back their original land for all of its worth."

“It is our responsibility to put fairness first! Fairness in opportunity, fairness from the beginning, fairness for Native Americans! That’s why I’m running for President of the United States, so that together we can speak up, and so that together we can put fairness first! Fairness not in outcome, but in opportunity. Every American deserves the opportunity to succeed by their own merits, not by their ancestry or color of their skin. We are the richest country in the world but the fact that Native communities are being squeezed for every dollar is wrong. The fact that Native Americans continue to be worse off than the rest of the country, continue to have their communities ignored and their schools and infrastructure underfunded. It's disgraceful and we will change it! Period. We used to enact policies to help all Americans not to target and demean marginalized communities. We need to start to measure our success by the fortunes and by the success of indigenous Americans. I don't believe that ending the historic Native American struggle in our lifetimes, in our United States of America, is impossible. I don't believe less pay in the pockets of working Native communities should be accepted as impossible. No! I believe this can all change, that we can all make this possible. So join me, join my campaign, and together we can deliver a truly changed country, not just offering Natives trite political ploys but instead delivering real change. So we can put Fairness First!"

"Because when they ask you, what do you look for from your country, the answer should be simple. That this country preserves indigenous justice, empowers millions and represents all Americans. It's why I'm speaking about the No More Silence act put forth by Representative Nez. It's why I support ending systemic Native erasure. So that this country stands by its promise it made two-hundred plus years ago to be a government for the people, by the people, not just white, land-owning men!"

“And it’s not just about the many policies I’m calling for in my platform to reform and renegotiate treaties, it’s also about our hopes. As many of us can recall, there was a call to change led by one of our very own, the man who was a real modern-day civil rights activist, Frank LaMere. He spoke of this message when he advocated for Natives throughout his life, saying "Nothing changes unless someone is made to feel uncomfortable! Nothing changes unless we make ourselves uncomfortable!" He did so knowing that it was our calling to be uncomfortable with how things are right now, that we need to have that uncomfortable conversation that things are not right for Natives, that things are very, very wrong. That the oh so important American Dream has never been the same for all of us. We know that for some it can be buying their first house, for others, it can be getting that promotion at work. For all of us it means having a goal, and reaching it. The idea that hard work reaps rewards is the American Dream. But for so many and like so much else in our history, this dream has excluded Native Americans from its original premise. 'Buying a house' and 'the right to vote' are two very different prospects if at first try you aren't seen as a citizen of this nation or having your land stolen under you. If even now infrastructure blight affects our Native and tribal communities worse, if even now voter suppression and ID laws threaten our democracy among indigenous Americans. Our history is one that all too often some wants to paper over when we should really be doing the simplest thing instead. Remembering. Because remembrance is more than words on paper or speeches in cities, it is the commitment that we will remind ourselves of the stains on our history.”

“Money, reparations or some format of restitution don't fix generational poverty brought on by the scars of slavery. Those are a start to the larger issue, but they're up there next to the words 'I'm Sorry' in addressing the real divides between ordinary Americans. Pundits and media junkies love to divide us by state, race, party, age, money, gender, or yes, even ancestry, for the spectacle of television. There are some who say that the American Dream is dead, but humor me for a moment because I believe that good Americans believe in that Dream, while great Americans believe in their dreams. It’s why I've spent my career listening and why I’ve spent this campaign listening. It’s why I unveiled my plan to offer a blueprint to combat the historical scars in this country brought from genocide and unfair internment on reservations. Because it's like what Frank said, we need to become uncomfortable with the status quo. And for me, that means supporting the renegotiations of treaties with tribes and Natives, finally giving them the equal footing they lacked when these laws and agreements were signed oh so long ago. It's time we also fix the communities and their important infrastructure, providing for better schools so a new generation can enroll for college, better hospitals so a older generations can be healthier. That's my plan. That's what I imagine we can accomplish as an entire country. We could fund and fulfill the dream for every American, and yes, that means Native Americans too.”

“To me, the role of our government is not to do absolutely everything but rather what it can to help you achieve your pursuit of life, your liberty and your happiness. And that phrase means so much more than we think it does. Life means living a whole and complete life free of the shackles of incomplete systemic racism. It means plans that help rectify the Native healthcare divide, the Native wealth gap, and every other place that Native Americans falls through the cracks. It is my commitment that by the end of the decade, if I am President of the United States, we will ensure that all Native Americans have access to healthcare, have access to a fair and just pay packet, have access to a joyful retirement, have access to the ballot box. To college education. To high-quality classrooms. To safe neighborhoods with fear for one's life. To better tribal structure to fix the historical treaties. To finally feel that this is your country too. Now, I know I will never know the indigenous struggle firsthand and will never understand it. But I'm going to do my damn hardest to help end it. We can make this happen, we can eliminate systemic Native erasure. And if we do this, if you support our campaign in doing this, I truly believe that by the end of this decade, we will make jobs and opportunity indiscriminate. We will have started the spark that lights the fire to make America fairer for all Native Americans. So let us go forward together, in this fight and in making this dream a reality.”

As Dayton finished her rally, she took the crowd by storm. Focusing on touting her record for Fairness First and her platform on Native issues, she worked the crowd to win over supporters while using her surrogates in the community to advocate for her behalf. She made sure to avoid any attempt to diminish their concerns and was sure to keep herself as a person willing to help, not a person who would ever understand the issues themselves. Likewise, she tried to avoid delegitimizing their issues to just a few topics, instead keeping the focus on stopping the systematic Native erasure in the country and helping rectify that across the entire political issue board. After an hour at the event center and working the crowd, she departed to a number of local Native-owned business to continue her message before hosting a round table with a number of young Native American activists, offering them not just herself to learn about the issues they faced in education but also offering them a chance to join her campaign to craft policy solutions. As this part of the visit and retail wrapped up, Dayton returned to the more white and suburban areas of the county, specifically Bartlesville. She held another Drinks event here and focused on kitchen table issues like healthcare, education, and the like again, before she returned back to the iconic JillBus to head back northwards, this time with eyes set on the Midwest.

All these Republican candidates are trying to prove who is the bigger Christian. Do you want to see how a Christian really governs? Come down to Louisiana.

Selina pursed her lips, but smiled.

"And climate action?"

Representative Caroline Simone
New York
Sunday 25th August, 2019

After a morning of quiet prayer to herself - for she was barred from taking worship in a Catholic church as she would have wanted to - Caroline was sat in the living room of her spacious Brooklyn townhouse. Alone, as ever, the emptiness of the house weighed upon her. It was an almost suffocating emptiness, as if the void sucked the air from her lungs. It left her breathless and unsteady, and she realized in that moment - being under attack as she was - how profoundly alone she was in her home life. With so much work to be done, and yet now fighting on two fronts, she went to pick up her phone from the table next to her.

Flicking through the contacts slowly, she focused on the one with a dark haired man with a wry smirk. Looking to be in his mid-40s, her eyes locked onto the name written beside it in plain, sans-serif font. Damian. Hitting the call button, she brought the phone up to her ear, listening to the dialling tone. The strumming rhythm of synthetic sound, over and over, drumming melancholy into her heart piece by piece. Eventually, it went through to voicemail, and she spoke in a somewhat muted tone. "Hi Damian, it's your mom. We've not spoken in a while, it'd be nice if we could catch up. I'm in Brooklyn right now, at the house, but we can go wherever you'd like. Just checking in. Love you."

Bringing the phone down and hitting end call, she set the phone down on the table beside her, lowering her head and massaging her temples with a finger and thumb, exhaling shakily. She knew he wouldn't reply.

Meeting with Governor Voorhees
August 29th, 2019
New York City

"Climate change is the biggest threat to our future. I intend to take it seriously, by taking us back on the Paris Climate Change treaty and working towards some cap and trade system for emissions. Plus, there's a need to examine a proper way to tax emissions and pollution in general so they don't fall onto consumers or the working-class people of this country. And there's definitely the need to reverse the Wolf executive orders undermining the Clean Water Act and the EPA. There is also a policy I'm working on to help support green infrastructure, sort of a reinvestment program. An actionable first step towards making the progressive Green New Deal not just a dream or catch phrase but actual policy. That really defines my programs, not a pragmatic politician like Donaldson or Velez or a so-called radical liberal like (Not-Stacey Abrams), no, I'm just an action-driven leader. Progressive policies being the goal but not the first steps."
