But now they say nothing.
When the stock market crash of 1929 hit, only a few cold psycopaths laughed. America was plunged into darkness, and western civilization went with it. In the election of 1932, many hopped Hoover would loose. But by a hair's breath, that was not to be. John Nance Garner was the Democrat nominee, not the young, arguably socialist FDR. Hoover, with his message of live and let live, while not letting the claws of socialism take the nation, won by a narrow margin. AT this point, a dark truth hit people-the great deppresion wouldn't end by ballot.
In New York, however, a group of four hundred men took this to their heart. They didn't believe in democracy as anything more than a means to an end. They believed in a new idea- technocracy, a government run by technical elites. On January 19, they gathered at the Pierre hotel to their movements leader- Howard Scott. Emboldened by FDR's loss, Scott concluded he needed to capture support for the movement- and the time was now. That day, on a nationwide broadcast, Scott made a speech, detailing the plans for a technate spanning across all of North America. Many flocked to this new movement, and on Scott's birthday, April 1st, 1933, a new party was declared- the Technocratic Party.
Over the next few years, the party went on a nationwide campaign to secure it's support. On March 9th, 1935, Scott put his hat in the ring. A tough, three way election ensued, and the vote was nearly split. But by a few Californian and New York votes, Scott was president. He went about changing many national policies in the next two years, like instituting a government initiative to expand foreign markets to Mexico, also on a technocratic path, founding economic deals with socialist countries, and instituting technocratic companies into the stock market. The economy rose, but no changes were made-until 1938. In the midterms, the vote was split 43% technocrat, 41% democrat, and 16% Republican in the House, and 44% democrat, 42% technocrat, and 14% republican in the senate.. The republicans, split between two factions, one despising the technocrats and the other believing in a coalition, fell completely. By one percent, the Technocrats managed to take control of the House. The Senate republicans were alone.
But the Democratic party, on February 17th, 1939, offered a solution- an economically conservative, socially liberal platform. The republicans, in desperate need of safety,decided to merged with them. Congress was split, and nothing could be done with this arrangement. On march 4th, 1939, Scott declared the merge unconstitutional until the next election, believing the great depression wouldn't be solved. The other two parties, now separate, declared an impeachment trial. Scott's judges refused, and they declared his whole government an illegal instituion. On March 6th, 1939, they attempted to March on Washington. A battle ensued between them and the technocrats, and in a surpise move, Scott was shot by a sniper. A authoritarian faction, led by Harold Loeb, took power in the battle, and stopped a takeover. All other parties were banned, and on April 1st, 1939, the Technocratic Republic of America was declared.
As the second world war began, the Japanese came knocking. They demanded from America four things- Guam, Hawaii, the Phillipines, and Samoa. America accepted-for a relatively low price that was 20% of the Islands cost. Though there were protests, the technocrats crushed them, and refused to enter the war. Around this time, they signed an alliance with Mexico.
In Europe, the Germans fought the British, but could not yet defeat them. With no help if American companies, however, they couldn't readily prepare to attack the Soviets until 1942. The Japanese and Soviets still signed a non-aggression pact, due to soviet aid to Chinese communists. When Barbarossa happened, the Soviets were better prepared. With no American help however, by 1945, the war was at a stalemate. All of Africa was under allied control, baring the neutral nations.
Until the second spring of nations.
On February 24, 1945, America saw a brief opportunity. Loeb inspired the French to rise up against the occupation, and the starving Masses accepted. But many were communist, not technocrats, and soon they took control. The french sprang up, then the Italians. The regimes were overthrown, but the German troops still held Alcase, Lorraine, and South Tirol. The Yugoslav partisans swiftly retook Yugoslavia, and then occupied Greece, Bulgaria, and Albania. The Soviets broke through, rushing into Poland and stopping at the 1914 German border. Bulgaria and Romania fell to the Yugoslavs and Soviets in the next weeks, with Hungary falling soon after. Their leaders told the British that the soviet shad began to commit massacre's of German protesters wanting Bread. All of Europe heard, and the British offered a harsh peace to Germany. The Germans reluctantly accepted, and soon united against the Russians. The king of Britain was dissatisfied with Churchill (like me) for siding with perpetrators of a genocide. Nearly all of Europe (baring Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Monaco) allied against the flood.
But the Americans wanted more. They drove into Canada, Central America, and Panama, leading to Britain fighting them. Ireland suffered a technocratic coup, and invaded the north. By 1947, the tide was turning. The Japanese attacking India and breaking non aggression by letting Menjiang attack Mongolia and invading Xinjiang didn't help. The Germans were forced to give Hanover to Britain to keep the troops from leaving them. This cost the world the war. By 1948, King George the VI realized this. He attempted to reform the empire, but was stopped. With the torry coalition in charge, he dissolved parliament to get his way. They British rioted, and Scotland and wales fell to become technocratic puppets. On May 9th, 1948, London fell. The Fuhrer was forced to sign peace, then got shot. George fled to South Africa, as the commonwealth collapsed. India surrendered before, Australia became a republic, the rest was sold off, and Egypt tried to take Sudan, but collapsed into civil war. Persia was occupied by the Japanese and Russians. Africa collapsed, the chaos consuming Liberia. Ethiopia took control of the Somalis.By August, Australia launched a last ditch offensive in a desperate, hopeless attempt to stop Japan. Which worked out. The final battle of WW2, in Australia, took all of Papua New Guinea, and its west counterpart, and forced Japan to sign peace with the Federal Republic of Australia, now with New Zealand. On September 2nd, 1948, George VI of South Africa surrendered. Namibia was annexed, and mainland Portugal was occcupied. Spain and Portugal later became French puppets. The rest of Portugal's regime in Mozambique slowly went into South Africa's sphere. The Second World War was over.
Now, Months have Passed. A broken world recovers. A blockade has occurred around South London. Africa remains lost baring a few holdouts. America seems poissed to rule the world, but is locked in a bidding war with SOuth American countries over German scientists that it seems to soon win. And as the bells sound the start of 1949, what is the fate of this dark gloomy world that you will find yourself in? Who will you play as? Who will win, between the Eagle, bear, and Flower?
