Most political power is invested in the Emperor under his political office of Executive Commissioner, who can issue executive decisions that may be overturned by the legislative branch known as the Lake Parliament. Rumored to be the only unit within the country to receive something resembling "advanced" training and know what the fuck they are doing most of the time, this unit is tasked with dealing with people the Emperor doesn't like. However, even they have rules their commanders go by. Such as not being able to kill frogs and not being permitted to ice the Prime Minister when she snores too loudly in your sleep. Judged by It's professionalism, the unit is small, no bigger than two divisions (40,000 at any given time) all divided up into micro units of two to four members spread out all over the country, eager to assassinate political dissidents abroad.

You know stormtroopers from Star Wars and how they aim bad?

They look like sharpshooters compared to these wannabe socialist imperialists. Often comprised of the people society no longer wants but also lacks the initiative to just exterminate them so they're stuck conscripted for life in the Army. As a result of the mandatory conscription, generations of soldiers often sleep, shoot and die alongside one another, though the retirement parties are a little bit more explosive when the ring to an aging officer's grenade just so happens to get misplaced. In fact, there's two distinct classes, the aging officers and the teenage angst conscripts with barely any hair on their chests.

Their hardware is a mix of whatever was on sale at the army surplus store and world war II era munitions intertwined with some slightly modern cruise missiles and SAM sites that sprinkle the nation for it's defense. There are even some cold war era tanks that were somehow taken from military museums and thrown together into a terribly outdated unit. Their only main advantage are in the forum of mass numbers and the blind fanaticism that many younger units believe in Emperor Jackson.

When the union was declared, whatever planes that hadn't been in the air were seized by overzealous militia units. Many of the former officers and experienced members opted to flee abroad upon the announcement of the Great Lakes. This management "brain drain" was one of the contributing factors, besides poor communication between the militia and air force, for Great Lake military defeats within Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Many times the pilots were operating with physical maps within their cockpits to find their targets, and a major deficit of spare parts, fuel and ammunition limited the number of planes actually conducting sorties against targets in Kentucky and West Virginia.

In order to actually shore up it's deficiency in transport and logistical aircraft, of which there was just a single cargo plane, over two hundred civilian airliners were forcibly seized, and several commercial airliner companies' assets were liquidated off to provide some money for the airforce. These planes were altered into a combination of level altitude bombers, tanker aircraft, transports, and kamikazes to name a few designations. The Air Force enjoys it's boasting of the "thousand planes" that are at it's disposal, though repairs and a few serious overhauls would be badly required if anything more than a skirmish occurs.

Purely a "Brown Water Navy", the fleet's aspirations of anything higher than coastal defense have often been terminated by the cruel government accountants that stop and remember "oh yeah we have a navy". Still, the navy is important in maintaining trade along the Missouri rivers and maintaining peace and order within the waters surrounding the Great Lakes. It's main assets are the patrol boats that can swiftly maneuver along the river way and fleet of submarines that could potentially cause damage to a hypothetical enemy surface flotilla should it come along the rivers. Still, there is a large quantity of river to cover, and this means large numbers of fast, nimble vessels to overwhelm and sweep the watery boarders of the Great Lakes.

In terms of surface ships, moored near Portman are the large destroyers that constitute the biggest naval threat of the fleet to drunken international observers. The surface fleet has a nucleus of submarines and the large destroyers that act as both attack and defensive vessels in the threat of an enemy attack. There are also a series of dams that provide electricity throughout the Great Lakes, and those are guarded by a handful of small patrol craft or manned by civilian privateers.

Still, southerners are treated with more suspicion owing to recently opened civil war ails from terrorist groups such as the aforementioned KOR and radical African american movement Black Communist Vanguard, who push for a more Maoist compared to Stalinist principles invested by low ranking party officials.

BBR President Foster's speech peaked Emperor Jackson's hope for a status quo format. The Great Lakes is often said to have been a miracle, a spontaneous collection from the minds of a few mad politicians with varying political beliefs, this historical perspective is only partially right. While it is true it seemed the Great Lakes appeared overnight as a unifying political power on par or attempting to rival the regimes of the Midatlantic and former Southern United States, if one was to look under the surface, you'd see a miracle that the nation did not break apart into civil war upon the declaration of the rights of Yankees. There was still the vibrant alt-right movement, longing for the days of republican extremism and awaiting the return of the Donald. These alt-right members were mostly concentrated within Indiana, a historically northern home for the southern KKK organizations in the 20th Century.

In the 2040s, the country was hastily being established, with much arguing over far leftist and far rightist movements that threatened to break the nation apart before it had even gotten it's feet firmly established on the world stage. There was a point in which outside observers were ready to cast the Great Lakes off as a "failed state" owing to rising ethnic tensions between Africans and the increasingly shrinking white plurality. However, the ideas and actions of one Chamomile Piper Wilson were to push the country into a unifying force. Wilson had been a depressed, unemployed former fast food restaurant employee with a string of bad relationships, arrests and heavy drug addiction. The most unlikely man to lead the nation ended up saving it.

In 2042, the nation had suffered a string of independence movements which saw the breif unraveling of the tight nit political union, forcing the weak leadership to be forced into an "articles of confederation" style weak central government. In 2043, without even informing the then Director of State Affairs (akin to a ceremonial executive), the Military invaded Kentucky. Hoping for a swift victory, the offensive was bogged down within a week of fierce trench fighting as the local governor of Kentucky appealed for military aid. Not wanting to escalate matters much less engage in hostilities with their Southern neighbor, the military and then Director Husband Mitchell formally agreed with the Bonnie Blue Republic in a full withdrawal. Less than a month afterwards, Kentucky would join the BBR in a stinging humiliation of his foreign policy.
In 2044, Great Lake militias, again acting without any authorization from their government, began to invade and raid across the Ohio-West Virginian boarder. By December of 2044, the local Ohio based militias found themselves increasingly outmatched by peacekeepers of the Bonnie Blue Republic, forcing hostilities to cease in early January of 2045. The popular outrage then boiled not against the military but against their civilian government, who elected Chamomile Piper Wilson over Mitchell as the new Director in the 2045 General Election.

Wilson by this point had straightened out his drug addiction and just happened to have been in the right place at the right time to declare himself President in 2044. However, his numerous enemies within the military, police and then established Committee of White Supremacy owing to his alleged left wing leanings had him forced into exile less than two years into his term. The government was then run by the Committee from 2046 to 2047, when calls for a monarchy were listened two, though an agreement was set up to retain the left wing points of the government to appease those on the left. The 2047 referendum saw Richmond Kyle Bonaparte take the reign name of Jackson to appease some far right democrats that adored the former president of the United States. Slightly bowing to pressure from anarchist sections of the left wing Unity and Preservation party that competed in the 2048 general election, the local towns and communities would mostly be left alone, save for Constables being appointed by the Prime Minister to ensure public order and to collect local taxes. Still, the U-P narrowly won against it's historic rival, RFR in the national legislature.
