State Ideology: The 'ideology' behind the government of Northumbria has been called 'Stinchcombism' by foreign observers, though this is not a name used by its supposed adherents, who instead choose to just call themselves 'Northumbrian nationalists', and has been described as incorporating cultural ultranationalism, left-wing ultranationalism, autarky, ethical socialism, Christian socialism, Christian nationalism, pro-intellectualism, anti-Nordic sentiment, and revanchism. The Christian elements have more to do with Northumbria's history than anything else.

Major Domestic Issues: The absence of an established party system in favour of a consensus of independents and minor parties completely subordinate to Stinchcomb. The creation of a new national identity and culture from what was just a few decades ago a declining regional one. Whether it’s really appropriate to be using coal in 2056 when the Maldives are supposed to be half underwater.
Major Foreign Issues: The Northumbrian government has been semi-secretly supplying Ulster-Scots ex-‘Unionist’ militias waging war against the Irish government, and public opinion is overwhelmingly sympathetic towards them. Stinchcomb and his circle also have some ideas on the Northumbrian heritage of the ‘Scotch-Irish’ in America (who commonly just describe themselves as Americans: see these maps) that would perhaps seem rather strange to outsiders, and in the event anything were to happen would be heavily inclined towards supporting them. Also see the aforementioned anti-Nordic sentiment in Northumbria.
History: The dissolution of the United Kingdom had already been underway, but it was accelerated and exacerbated by the embarrassing defeat of Britain, a nuclear-armed great power, at the hands of the Northern Commonwealth, a country with a population less than half than that of Britain, and that country’s annexation of the Northern Isles. Martial law became outright military rule, and Northumbrian nationalists and an assortment of now-radicalised northern Labourites united in rebellion against London. From this united front Stinchcomb emerged to assume leadership of the movement as a sort of Northumbrian Subcomandante Marcos. For the following few years the British state, largely preoccupied in Northern Ireland, was met with endless shitposting-as-disobedience online and even a few Northumbrian militants who had, shouting something about ‘Norman landowners’ and land redistribution, occupied rural villages.
The junta, however, was at a disadvantage – most Northumbrian nationalists restricted their revolutionary activities to posting online and the actual, real-life ‘militants’ were still not actually committed to the cause enough to actually practice the traditional guerrilla lifestyle of living in tents in makeshift camps and so, like many young Britons unable to afford anywhere to live, went home to Mum and Dad for tea. Traditional counterinsurgency tactics thus proved unsuccessful, and this was not helped by the fact the vast majority of the army was fighting in Northern Ireland anyway. By the time the junta collapsed, the Northumbrians were strong enough to just assume control not just in the North East but also parts of Scotland (the pro-European Scottish nationalists significantly weakened from having been a rather obvious target for the military regime to go after).
The new government quickly called for elections to legitimise Northumbria’s existence to the international community. With a first-past-the-post electoral system, previous political parties having been dissolved during the junta's rule in the interests of ‘national unity’, and the only opposition coming from the Space Navies Party (supporting world peace, asteroid mining, and making Gerry Anderson real), the electorate gave Northumbrian nationalist candidates every single seat in the Provisional Assembly.
Having secured his position, Stinchcomb embarked on a programme of reindustrialisation and the rebuilding of Northumbria’s economy: shipyards were reopened and newly built, and a nationalised Swan Hunter began operating once more; foreign advisers were hired; the Armstrong name, once known around the world, was revived for use by a new state-owned arms manufacturer; and all sorts of entities involved in the manufacturing sector received government investment and support. Northumbria was to reclaim its place as an industrial powerhouse.
