I think it's because they're in two different systems; the same ship can only do explorations in one system, you can just explore more stuff in that system.

Edit: also pretty sure you mean CO₂ rather than O₂C on the starmap for the Armada.

Actually, I mean the latter - CO₂ indicating a gaseous compound, as opposed to O₂ and unbonded C. I should probably make that clearer though.

When you have more population than food.

Exceeds - starvation shouldn't threaten most factions, as population growth will only reach up to the limits of the food supply, not beyond. The more irritating feature will be slum-dwellers causing social disorder.

Eden continents, as long as they are inhabited, add an additional +1 Harmony to the planet. Also, both Slums and Population period require a Harmony each to maintain. So, with two Edens, a Harmony Colony, and 4 Pop (1 in a Slum), as well as Faith as one of your ideologies, you'll be gaining 8 Harmony, and using 5 in Generation 2, not all the way down to 0. Ditto in Generation 1, you're actually running a 5 Harmony surplus, not merely 2.

Last but not least, don't forget to post your research in the Science Central thread! That's where I resolve things like that, and you should know that you can choose how to allocate research efforts for Tier 1 techs, you don't have to just choose a broad category.
