The majority of your state is afflicted, meaning that the non afflicted regions would still have a shortage by trying to feed the rest.

Population: 10,032
Armed Population:
189 Knights Hospitaller
510 Regional Guard
2301 Citizen Soldiers
Technology Level: Mixed Metal, Post-Collapse, limited Prior-collapse.

History: The true history of the Order of Saint John goes back a very long time, a little over 1000 years in fact. But, the OSJ in this small region of Colorado only dates back nearly 200 years. On the eve of a nuclear detonation in Washington D.C., the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Denver, and a number of wayward souls fleeing from the corrupted heart of Denver, arrived in the mountainous regions of Colorado, they were met by a company of ARNG from Colorado Springs, evidently deserting from the command of the US military, who had condemned the nearby city to a death by atomic hellfire. All hid in the nearby Climax mines, a scattered and diverse group of 139.

They would wait in that mine for nearly three weeks as the earth shuddered and churned, the guardsmen going out to retrieve water and food from nearby areas, or hunting if they could. Eventually, the area around Climax Mine became a notable town, with many people flocking to the mines in an effort to find shelter. The sermons and reassurances of the Archbishop kept the townsfolk sane and levelheaded in this time of turbulence and fear. This town and it's governance were christened the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, it's militant arm in turn, the Knights Hospitaller. The civillians of the town went to work farming, hunting, and predominantly, mining the molybdenum mines they sought shelter in.

When the Archbishop finally passed, the Order had become a sprawling state, three counties had pledged to aid the Order in their lives, in exchange for protection and a centralized point in which to voice concern. Though, it was not to last in it's utmost splendor, the varied backgrounds of those living in the towns and settlements took issue with the theocratic order, and it's all but forced conversions to Christianity. It was at this point that the Order had a schism. The Order was faced with a slight of internal strife from those who assembled themselves as "The Children of The Patriarchs". This minority found themselves on a more liberal take of the various religious scriptures and tales, rather than turn away those of a Jewish or Islamic belief, they welcomed them under the banner that all were children of Abraham, regardless of what name they called God, or how they dedicated their lives to him.

This schism would also cause a rift in the Hospitaller, different Commanders followed different rites of engagement, some accepted the surrender of raiders, others didn't. One group, under Lord Commander Marcus Fawkes, instead of fighting, spoke to those who would fight, this group was known predominantly as the Sentinel Guard. The Order strained under these differing opinions and ideas, until eventually, it snapped under it's strain.

In 2117, construction began on a massive cathedral embedded into the side of Mount Elbert. Many saw this as an affront to God, a desecration of an idol of Earth's natural beauty. Others saw this as simply a waste of resources. The Archbishop, refused to stop the work on the cathedral, proposing that the center of the Order be moved from Climax to the Cathedral when it was complete. For his efforts, four years after construction began, he was shot, mid mass by a trio of assassins, Patriarch David Moss, of the Children of the Patriarch, Lord Commander Fawkes himself, and a miner, who had lost friends during a collapse of the cathedral's building process. All three were crucified for their crimes, but ultimately, it caused enough grief and gave enough of a shock to change things within the Order.

Over the next 30 years, the Cathedral was completed, but rather than simply a Cathedral, it became a tunneled out city, and christened New Jerusalem. over this time, reforms within the order changed it from a predominantly Christian system, to that of a blanket for all Abrahamic religions. Archbishops turned to Matriarchs and Patriarchs. It has been such a way for the past 50 years, a relatively peaceful group of people looking to reunite America under the blanket of faith, and fellowship with their fellow man.

Culture: The OSJ has a culture notably steeped in faith. Though in recent years, the Order has taken a more liberal interpretation of the holy books of the assorted Abrahamic faiths, the main pillars of which are "Forgiveness, Brotherhood, and Preservation". The Patriarch and or Matriarch are chosen by the collective membership of the Order's clergy, similar to that of the Pope. While dietary constraints are not enforced for all it's population, a significant number of those living in the Order's lands follow Kosher law. There are also rare instances of the Order sponsoring and aiding pilgrimages to Mecca across the Pacific.

Forgiveness is the eldest pillar, while many believe that Sin is to be forgiven upon it's action, due to Christ's sacrifice, many will still seek forgiveness for sin. On the opposite side of the coin, it is seen that none are free from redemption, no matter how heinous or depraved the act, crimes are still punishable, but one's immortal soul will not be condemned if they earnestly regret their choice. If an individual enters into the order from mysterious beginnings or with a questionable origin, no questions will be asked, and they are not expected to answer, for their past at that point is between them and God.

Brotherhood is the pillar in which declares that all members of the Order, no matter their origin, name for God, personal affects, or attraction is to be judged nor turned away. Each individual is a child of God, and is to be respected as such, for only The Lord has the right to judge people in such a way. The legal system does not judge individuals in these ways, rather their actions upon others in their Brotherhood, the death penalty is non-existent these days, in compliance with the Sixth Commandment. Crucifixion is a valid punishment, but rarely lasts longer than a day, and is seen as the capital punishment. Other punishments include lashes, solitary confinement, in more extreme cases, body parts are removed, such as a hand for recurring theft.

Preservation was the last pillar to be addressed, it states that the knowledge and designs of their forefathers and of the people that came before them is to be preserved and studied. A massive library underneath the New Jerusalem Cathedral now lays stocked with books, parchments, blueprints, and designs from before the collapse, scavenged from across the US to be studied, replicated and manufactured if possible. From the bicycle, to the atom bomb, all lay in their secreted glory on paper, or in actuality underneath thousands of tons of stone. For their creation was God's will, and while mankind had erred to cause the wrath of God to cleanse those unworthy, man still had worth.

Population: 857
Armed Population: 100 Guards and 40 airmen
Technology Level: Post Collapse with a focus on gliders

History: The land of New Mexico had been one of convoluted technological progress before the collapse, from dropping the bomb to flight. It was here at the United States Southwest Soaring Museum, where a people part of the Soaring Society of America thrived with flying machines that did not fly under their own power. From official records as part of the Soarin' Musem the great flights of these machines could have far reaches despite the lack of self-powered flight. These "airmen" were holy men who trained their entire lives to fly these machines. In the historical codex there was a split between three groups, powered flight, unpowered flight and balloons. Our people descend from those that embraced the unpowered flight and where gliding through the air is perfect compared to floating or flying with engines.

Of course, such a blissful ideal existence is not possible, when the bandits to the south attacked, we needed to defend ourselves. Using the ideas of our ancestors and any remaining drawings or blueprints they called them, we created gliding machines as well. Fitting some with makeshift machine guns in the front and others with bombs held by strings on the bottom, then by using a complicated air powered launch system by our brightest minds we managed to launch these gliding machines into the air to fight back with our men on the ground. Attacking from the skies of our holy airmen, although the first attempts went horribly due to the inexperience of the airmen, we soon became more proficient and eventually experts of our unpowered flights. Defending ourselves with these machines, we became stronger. But we were still unorganized, reading through more of the documents left by our ancestors we discovered that there were men who ruled the skies, with different ranks symbolizing their status in society. As such, we created a Government to rule over us, led by the Air Marshal with the Council of Warrants, Officers who knew their skill best.

Culture: The main cultural aspect is flight, the creation of model gliders and the focus towards the skies with unpowered flight. The main focus of ones life is to choose whether they wish to live on the ground for the betterment of society or if they wish to fly in the skies in gliders. But to truly become an airman, you must build your own glider from scratch, which in the southwest where resources are scarce enough is even harder to do. But if one does so, they can be adopted by an airman to teach them how to truly fly in the sky and to hopefully one day become an airman of your own. But aside from gliders, kites are also a large cultural practice for those that wish to enjoy the ideals of flight whilst staying on the ground, in fact, kites are the main form of communication in case radios are either too scarce or no longer working. Every person has one personal kite which they continue to add onto, to tell of their story, their personality or of the things they love. It's a beautiful practice and one that's the most prevalent within the society.

I am currently in the process of writing an app about a Kingdom in southern Texas. I've written half of it. Since apparently someone else has made a claim in Texas to be a Kingdom, should I bother to keep writing? I don't really have an interested in joining as some other government type (except for empire, but that is not an option probably).

Faction Type: Survivor Enclave
Flag (Optional): N/A
Governing Ideology: Democratic
Leader(s): Bethany Tash, Mayor
Territorial Claims: Pitkin, CO
Population: 183
Armed Population: 22 (hunters mostly)
Technology Level: Post-Collapse

History:
Aspen was re-founded by orphans who had lost their homes and families fleeing local conflicts in 2201. Banding together, the children took refuge in the ghost town and slowly made a home for themselves in the mountains of Colorado. Life was not easy, however, and the first winter threatened to end the fledgling town before it could even truly begin, but with some determination and luck the town survived into spring if only just barely. Alan Ducard was officially elected as mayor of Aspen by popular vote, and although inexperienced the young teenager would help to transform the ghost town into a reasonably comfortable community. Gardens would soon supplement hunting and fishing as would trade, and the more intact of abandoned buildings would be repaired (amateur, but no longer leaking during moderate rainstorms). Far from perfect but it would become a home to many who had lost theirs and would attract others with nowhere else to go.

At age 21, Alan Ducard, having served as mayor for seven years, would abdicate his position and leave Aspen with the other kids turned adults, and although his reasoning was never explicitly given it was soon attributed to a desire to protect the refuge from the very same conflicts that had orphaned them all years ago. It would soon become a custom that every year those who had passed from childhood into adulthood would bid farewell and leave Aspen permanently. By all accounts the town should have again slipped into oblivion as the residents emigrated elsewhere, but with children born to the older teens and many new arrivals coming in search of the "Children's Town" the population would slowly increase over time. Small but sustainable. Stories of the town would be spread by former residents living elsewhere, and to those with nowhere to go Aspen would serve as a beacon hidden away in the mountains of Colorado. Over time some would even return as caravaners . This renewed contact and trade would eventually lessen the isolation of the children and Aspen, for better or for worse, would be forced to share its voice with the remainder of the world around it. The prospects of which have not been met without criticism. In recent years a difference of opinions has led to hurt feeling on both sides, but regardless the little town will be forced to change or else hide away once more.

Culture:
The most striking feature of Aspen is the age of its people. Everyone living in the town is under the age of 21, with those entering adulthood leaving to live their lives elsewhere every year following a small ceremony. This has not been without problems. Children, as expected, are inexperienced with most things, and this has led to a socialistic attitude concerning food, water, and toys, as well as other areas deemed too important to simply exclude anyone. Those who provide to those who cannot are held in high regard, such as hunters, fishermen, and those with some useful skill. Other than this, most everything is exchanged through barter and trade. No official currency is used. The small population allows for a direct democracy to succeed rather well. The Mayor of Aspen is elected by popular vote and rules with absolute authority, although at any time a vote can be called to elect a new leader, allowing poor leadership to be replaced easily enough in most cases. Anyone can become mayor and there is no age limit (the youngest was 5 and the oldest abdicated upon turning 21). The town survives mostly on scavenging for trade, hunting, and small gardens. Whatever can't be made locally is traded with caravans that sometimes come through, many having been residents in the past.

Technology Level: A mixture between Post-Collapse and Medieval, depends on what is able to be fashioned.

History: Birmingham was always a city of conflict, and the years following the Collapse were no different. When Louisiana became Corrupted, many of the native African populace (who weren’t outright destroyed in the Collapse), went northwards to Birmingham, the city that is now described as The City of the Jailed King. Much of what actually occurred is shrouded in religious propaganda-but what could be gleaned was that the influx of Louisianan refugees-the Voodooists in particular-caused some conflict between the white populace. The resulting being the establishment of the Vhetman Dynasty-descended from one “Roy Django”, who styled themselves as High Chiefs and Kings of the area, and the enforcement of Voodoo and what could be considered the “Creolan” identity. Much of it’s history is shadowed in murky isolationism, only with brief lashes against roving bandits, refugee columns, or forays into ruins in order to glean some past knowledge. Trade with their cousins in Mobile Bay was sparse and rare, as both geographical and ideological distance forced the Creolans into militant isolationism. Now, rumors are beginning to spread that great expansions were underway. Once the kingship was solidified, and the first great Bandit Clan would be ousted, then the entire American South and thereafter the world would be theirs for the taking.
Culture: A somehow functional melting pot of Afro-American influences, faith is synonymous with culture. While mostly influenced by the Vodun settlers that escaped Louisiana and followed the Black Warrior River north, and ultimately defined the beliefs of the Confederacy. Over the creation of the Confederacy, most if not all traits of the Old World were either subsumed and utilized by the Great Council or destroyed-though what remained may be considered appalling.

Martial Prowess is first and foremost desired among a Creolan, followed shortly after by cleverness and astuteness-for the Council uses the lessons of the Old World to further their own power through conquest. While many remember the Old World and the Fall, few aside from the most devoted scholars know the real truth, and much of Creolan culture is defined by struggle and liberation.

In a twist of once-deliberate irony, slavery was practiced by the African Americans upon the surrounding white populace, the narrative of vengeance and reclamation being intertwined with the soul of Creola. Yet, Paradoxically, studies of the old world were necessary for the fulfillment of the Great Work-the dominionship of the entire world under African rule.

Even under this unity of fanaticism, divisions remained. There are those who wish to reconcile with the peoples of the world, even the Slavers, as per the open-minded doctrines of Voodoo. Calling themselves the “Spirit Dancers”, these people are easy-going, prone to poetry, song, and art: priding the freedom of expression and seeking of knowledge above all. Conversely, the “Black Warriors”-named after the river that was their route to Birmingham-scoff at the pursuit of aesthetics and harmony, and prefer to take and plow through the land rather than idly meditate.

It is a harsh world, beset by bandits and Freeholders; disease, radiation, earthquakes, and the double-edged sword of fanaticism.

Population: 5,800
Armed Population: 760
Technology Level: Metal Age Tech

History:

No one exactly knows how the Kingdom of Latinia came to be. Sacred texts talk about Jesus Christ appearing before Fernado Oñez and crowning him King. With the help of God, Fernado conquered the territory that now comprises the Kingdom. Other texts, which have been forbidden by the government, talk of Fernado as a petty gang member of one of the many gangs made up of survivors who left their enclave in search of loot, glory and thrill in the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Texas. Fernado, in this version, managed to rise through the ranks thanks to his wit and combat skills. He eventually formed a strong quasi-military force that enforced his rule over what is now Latinia.

Since then, four Kings have reigned the Kingdom, with Garcia Oñez being the current King. The name of the Kingdom came due to most of the inhabitants being of Latino origin and Spanish-speaking. The Kingdom has a feudal organization, with the King at the top along with his royal court, ministers and top bureaucrats. Aside from political figures, the court includes brave warriors and entertainers who have the ear of the King and can garner great influence. The court, all their servants and the common residents of the capital, all together about nine hundred people, reside in Nova Roma.

Below are the Duchies. Each Duchy rules over a fief of land that includes farm settlements and small villages, all together having about 200-500 inhabitants each. The Dukes rule as semi-autonomous rulers, their only obligations being to provide tax tribute and military levy to the royal court. Their mansions act as sort of Ducal capitals, hosting courts that are miniatures of the grand royal court of the capital.

Below are the Barons. Barons are nobles who answer directly to their Duke and who rule over a farm settlement or village. Baronies usually have 50 to 150 people. Barons don't have the resources or manpower to have a court of their own, but they usually are assisted by a council of five or six minister. They have great autonomy, as long as they provide their Duke with tax and levy.

The Church of the Kingdom is the 'Catholic Church of Latinia'. The Church owns chapels along with the land around those chapels; in some cases, this means that some small farms fall under the jurisdiction of the Church and pay their tax on the Church instead of some Baron. The Church is an autonomous organization, answering not to the local Baron or Duke but to the Pope, who resides in Nova Roma. In turn, he answers to the King. The Church is exempt from taxation and reigns supreme over spiritual matters but stays out of political affairs.

Culture:

The Kingdom has a Latino majority, is Spanish-speaking and Catholic. Culture in Latinia can be divided between the high culture of the elites and the lower culture of the broad masses:

Dukes generally engage in a martial culture, organizing grand hunts and holding tournaments during which they duel for the glory of their house. They are also expected from an early to age to learn from memory the Bible and to have developed skills in calligraphy and poem writing. Quite often, Dukes or their sons engage in poetry contests, which are every bit as prestigious as martial competitions. The ideal Duke is one who is a 'Warrior-Scholar', equally skilled with the sword as he is with the pen.

Aristocratic women tend to have more freedoms than their common-folk counterparts, being allowed to study and engage in various poetry contests just like their men. However, they cannot hold offices of government nor become members of the military. An exception is when they act as regents for minor Dukes.

The common-folk rarely have any education aside from some basic reading and writing skills. Most of the population is agrarian, living off the land. Men and women both work in the farms, but women are expected to be subservient to their husband and to obey him. They are also the ones who largely undertake the growing-up of the children. Nova Roma is the only truly urban center in the Kingdom, with many of the inhabitants being traders or technicians of some sort. The inhabitants of the capital tend to live more comfortably and to be better educated (though nowhere as educated or comfortable as the aristocratic class) and tend to look down on provincials. In turn, many provincials look down on the 'softies' of Nova Roma.

The Church plays an important role in society, undertaking rudimentary welfare (such as handing food to the poorest and treating injured or sick people) as well as spiritual services with sermons. Catholic morality is imposed on society. Priests tend to be more well-educated than the average folk but still less educated than the aristocrats (except for the priests in the capital). They are respected by society and violence against them is highly condemned. The Church is currently led by Pope Hadrian II.

Hate to break it to you, but you're 'coast' is the Rio Grande. While it's large enough for steamboats, it's not quite open water.

Nationstates Name: Tayner

Faction Name: The Realm of North Texas
Faction Type: Kingdom
Flag (Optional): Visual Aid
Governing Ideology: Royalist
Leader(s): King Blake Brownel
Territorial Claims: Sherman and Dallum counties, TX
Population: 6,000
Armed Population: 1,000
100 Knights
100 Guards (Standing Military)
100 Light Cavalry
300 Archers (Levy)
400 Levy
Technology Level: Metal Age

History: In Dallum county, TX, there were a few families of Aristocratic standing that rose to power through holding land. After some times of loosing technology, they would use their power to rebuild into a metal stage society, building castles and forts as they expanded. A hundred years ago, the Brownel family rose to power through cleverly marrying into the leading family and exploiting the line of succession. This marks the rise of the Realm of Northern Texas as we know.

Henry Brownel would raise an army of 500 men, and conquer Sherman County, home to brigands who often raised trouble for the Realm. After annexing the lands after breaking the raider presence, Henry would focus on securing his family's future by having many children. However, when he would die, this would backfire as each of his children would want to become the head of the Realm. Following this, a brief fight would break out between each of the children and their allies, however one would survive, the youngest, Blake.

Blake secured the loyalty of the Knights of the Realm, and while under their protection, would detain and exicute each of his relatives for betraying him. Blake would consolidate his power within the Realm, securing loyalties where he could and destroying those who he would suspect would betray him. He would raise a large military, and prepare to expand his kingdom much like his father did before, wanting to continue on the family legacy of bringing honor to the Realm and expanding it.
Culture: Northern Texas's real draws much of it's culture from the southern culture of old. Their flag draws homage to their home state, however the new color pallet shows how something new was born out of the collapse. They also hold a sense of rugged individualism despite the fact they usually depend on their community when struggling.

Their socal structure is hierarchical, with the Royal Family on top, followed by affluent nobles and then common citizens. There is no slave caste, as slavery is outlawed and seen as a barbaric practice reserved for raiders and bandits. Common citizens who are active military are held in higher social standing than common citizens, and Nobles often serve as officers, with active soldiers filling in the NCO roles.

Territorial Claims: Albany (capital), Schoharie, Renssenlauer, Columbia, Greene, NY)
Population: 10,000
Armed Population: 3,000
Technology Level: Post Collapse

History: Sometime during the Collapse, Adrian Konigg, Governor of New York declared Independence from the United States of America, and proclaimed the Republic of New York (2025 AD - 2047 AD). He managed to win all of New York to his side, save New York City itself. The newly proclaimed President Adrian Konigg (ruled: 2025 AD - 2043 AD) sent his National Guard up against New York City, however, they were defeated by the inhabitants of the Big Apple, at the Battle of Yonkers (2027 AD). After this, a ceasefire was agreed, because President Konigg had to send his forces North, to defend against a massive incursion of Canadians fleeing across the border into the newly founded Republic of New York. Unable to stem the tide, President Konigg agreed to allow the Canadian refugees to settle in the north of the State. President Adrian Konigg ruled until his death, in 2043, at the age of 79.

In 2043, with the President’s death, a National Election was called, and Adrian’s son and former Vice President, Alexander Konigg was elected President (ruled: 2043 AD - 2047 AD, 2048 AD - 2085 AD). In the 4th year of his term, the National Assembly (the former State Assembly) demanded that Alexander stand for Election, and allow an opponent to run. President Alexander has the Assembly members arrested and declared that he would rule for life like his father. This led to uprisings throughout the Republic, with the exception of the capital at Albany and some of the surrounding counties. The rebels attempted to besiege Albany, however, they were defeated by those forces loyal to Alexander. After this victory, on Christmas Day, 2047, Alexander declared the abolition of the Republic and proclaimed himself King of New York. The Throne has passed through several generations down to the current Monarch, King Arthur II Konigg.

Culture: The majority of of New Yorkers are old stock Americans, of predominantly Anglo and Dutch stock, over the centuries, they have come to develop a strong belief in their Kingdom as being “chosen of God”, and referred to their King as “God’s Anointed”.
