太平天囯
Tàipíng Tiānguó
Heavenly Kingdom of Transcendent Peace

Full Nation Name : Heavenly Kingdom of Transcendent Peace | Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (太平天囯, Tàipíng Tiānguó)
| Celestial Empire (天朝, Tiāncháo)
Majority/Official Culture : Hakka, Wu, Han Chinese
Territorial Core : Mainland China, Manchuria, Tibet, Xinjiang, Mongolia, North Vietnam, Taiwan
Territorial Claim : Assam, Indochina, Burma, Korean Manchuria (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning)
Capital City : Heavenly Capital | Tianjing (天京) | Nanjing (南京市) circa modern day
Population : ~430,000,000

Government Type : Heterodox Christian theocratic absolute monarchy
Government Ideology/Policies : Christian Imperialism, Evangelism, Militarism, Expansionism, Totalitarianism | Paternalism, Egalitarianism
Government Focus : "To rid the world of demon worship" circa Jen Yu-wen, The Taiping Revolutionary Movement (1973)
  • Convert Asia to Christianity, peacefully if possible, through force if necessary
  • Destroy all trace of pagan and demonic symbols and records, particularly Buddhist and Confucian maleficarum outside of China that survived the cleansing flames of the Great Taiping Crusade (太平天國運動)

Head of State : Heavenly King (太平天王)
Head of Government : Empress Dowager & Regent, Hong Xuanjiao
Government Description : Celestial Empire where the faithful worship and obey their Heavenly King and his Divine Heirs.

Majority/State Religion : God Worshipping Society (拜上帝教)
Religious Description : As a religious movement, the God-Worshipping Society centered its worship around the views of its founder, Hong Xiuquan, whose unique interpretation of Christianity combined Chinese folk religion and other religious traditions with faith in Shangdi (上帝, Supreme Deity | God). They believe in central tenets and scriptural concepts shared in the established Christian canon such as Divine filiation, which is the redemption of all Christians (and only Christians in their view), Trinitarianism, and Canonization of Saints, but differ widely when it comes to the belief that their founder Hong Xiuquan was "the son of God the Father and the younger brother of Jesus Christ who had been directed to rid the world of demon worship."

Economic Ideologies : State capitalism mixed with aristocratic corporatism and largely protectionist policies with relaxed restrictions for preferred trading partners.
Major Production : Luxury goods such as silk, tea, salt, sugar, porcelain, and spices (traditional) | Manufacturing goods such as steel, motors, railways, textiles, synthetic dyes, photographic films, and agricultural chemicals | Mass assembly of rifles, ammunition, artillery, bayonets, rockets, and newly christened ships (recent)
Economic Description : A war time economy during a time of relative peace, where profitable civilian industries fall behind a booming military industrial complex comprised of established arms, munitions, and shipbuilding corporations such as Hanyang Arsenal, Taiyun Arsenal, Foochow Arsenal, Great Hsi-Ku Arsenal, and Jiangnan Shipyard that benefit from government efforts to produce, mobilize, and allocate resources to sustain the violence against its many enemies within and without the country.
Currency : Holy Treasure (聖寶, Shèngbao)

Development: Modern/Semi-industrialized
Development Description : Heaven and earth when compared to the ailing Qing standards of the past. As one of the largest economies in the Orient, if not the foremost in terms of population, resources, and industrial capacity, the major urban centers of the Heavenly Kingdom are highly industrialized and developed on par with its Western counterparts, though developed is somewhat staggered across rural environs, a gap religious authorities are keen to bridge in the near future.

Army Description : Christened after the Eight Banners ( 八旗, Bāqí) of the fallen Qing, and modeled along Western standards, the Twelve Banners (十二旗, Shíèrqí) comprise the modernized land force of the Heavenly Kingdom post-crusade, with each banner assigned a color corresponding to one of the original disciples of Christ (基督, Jīdū), adding up to twelve field armies in total. Effectively however, only eleven are active at any given time due to the twelfth existing in name only, its empty ranks symbolic of the black sheep among the original disciples who betrayed Shangdi. Comprised of former revolutionary units reorganized and freshly outfitted into a professional standing army and peace-keeping force, the Twelve Banners number three million fighting men in active service across myriad regiments of foot, horse, and artillery. Among the largest, if not the largest terrestrial forces in the world.
Army Weakness : Quantity over quality. Unsophisticated military doctrine of mass human waves and total war on civilian populations. While the equipment is made of steel, the men are made of wood by comparison. Faith and zealotry make up the shortcomings in discipline and restraint.
Naval Description : Comprised of the remainder of the Qing's four regional Beiyang, Fujian, Guangdong, Nanyang fleets, the Heavenly Fleet (太平舰队, Tian Jiànduì) is the product of reorganization efforts to consolidate the former Qing navy into a proper, modernized blue water navy. While few of these original ships remain, a number of newer models comprising of hulking vessels of iron and steel ranging from destroyers, cruisers, and battleships produced from the Heavenly Kingdom's bustling shipyards have recently bolstered the ranks in increasing numbers.
Naval Weakness : Untested and inexperienced sailors. Shiny toys in the hands of children. Slow and lumbering. Very much quantity over quality much like with the army.
Further Military Description : [[OPTIONAL]]

National Goals : Wipe out remaining dissent. Reclaim lands lost by the Qing. Acquire new trade partners.
National Issues : Antagonistic relationship with (most) of the Orient.
National Figures of Interest : Hong Xiuquan | Zonsius Christ | Siuzon Christ (Romanization)
National Ambition/Aspirations : Christian hegemony in Asia under Tianjing.

History :
  • 1836
    • Orthodox missionary Edwin Stephanos preaches to a young Hong Xiuquan about Christianity.
  • 1843
    • Hong Xiuquan converts to Christianity after failing the civil service exam for the fourth time and in the process, declares himself the second son of God the Father and the younger brother of Jesus Christ based a series of visions.
    • Two giant swords known as the demon-slaying swords (斬妖劍) are forged to aid Hong Xiuquan in his quest to rid China of idols.
  • 1847
    • Hong Xiuquan is baptized in Guangzhou by French Reformed missionary Isaac Jaceaux Roberts. Roberts is unaware of Hong's unique interpretation of the faith.
    • The Society of God Worshippers is founded by Hong's cousin, Feng Yunshan, comprised of a growing number of converts to Hong's brand of Christianity. Hong assumes leadership shortly after.
    • Hong begins his translation and adaption of Gospel into what would become the Taiping Bible.
  • 1850
    • The God Worshippers have grown to a size of 30,000 converts. Alarmed Qing officials send imperial troops to disperse the growing sect, but are instead routed in a battle, where a Qing deputy magistrate is slain.
    • A full scale attack is launched by the Qing Green Standard Army (綠營兵, Lǜyíngbīng) against the sect's headquarters in Jintian, but once again are repelled. The victorious zealots behead the Manchu commander, sparking the Jintian Uprising, evolving into what later became known as the Great Taiping Crusade.
  • 1851
    • Hong Xiuquan declares the founding of the Heavenly Kingdom of Transcendent Peace.
    • The rebels capture Yongan. Hong's army swells with new converts and receives support from large portions of the Han Chinese population, who are resentful against Manchu rule.
  • 1853
    • Tianjing falls to the increasingly powerful zealots. Hong declares the city the capital of his revolution, a movement which now controls a population base of 30 million people, heralding the beginning of the Great Taiping Crusade.
    • The Authorized Taiping Version of the Bible | Taiping Bible is printed and spread far and wide across China, exposing the greater public not only to the religious aims of the crusade involving the conversion of the Chinese people to Hong's syncretic version of Christianity, but also the radical nationalist and political components of the movement, which called for the overthrow of the Manchu ruling class in addition to a wholesale transformation and reformation of the state, where instead of merely replacing the ruling dynasty with another, the Taipings promised to usher in a new era that would permanently upend the moral and social order of the continent.
    • An ambitious programmed of reforms framed as mandatory religious law are implemented by Hong Xiuquan which reinvented the civil bureaucracy, adopted the Gregorian calendar, banned opium, and enforced gender equality.
  • 1860
    • With the aid of Yang Xiuqing, a veteran Taiping commander known as the "East King," the Taiping zealots sack Shanghai after a bloody siege.
    • The Norther Expedition (太平天國北伐) is undertaken in the same year to capture the Qing capital of Beijing and end the war.
  • 1864
    • Hong Xiuquan dies of heart complications. He is succeeded by his son, Hong Tianguifu (洪天贵福, Hóng Tiānguìfú) as the next King of Heaven (天王).
    • Beijing falls to the Taiping. Qing loyalists scatter across China vowing revenge.
  • 1866
    • Two years after the fall of Beijing, the Heavenly Kingdom controls much of the former Qing Dynasty. In the immediate reorganization of government, the Manchu ruling class is replaced by a new aristocracy of former revolutionary leaders, largely comprised of both former commoners and foreign missionaries, with many intermarrying and establishing new great houses such as the Yang, Feng, and Wei, many of whom also claim descent from celestial parents among the Trinity much like Hong Xiuquan before them.
    • The following decade is spent reasserting central control and mopping up the remaining Qing holdouts across the country.
  • 1867
    • Twenty million are dead left in the wake of the war, many of which are the new government's fallen enemies. With armed revolutionaries roaming the country, and the newly christened Heavenly Church ascendant, few remain to oppose the will of the Celestial Palace (天宫, Tiāngōng) in the year following the Crusade's end. In what became known as the Heavenly Restoration (太平恢复), in reference to Hong Xiuquan's teachings about an ancient Chinese past that was both notably prosperous and more importantly, Christian that predate the lies of Confucious and Buddha, they move quickly in reversing much of Qing policy and implementing sweeping reforms in line with Hong's teachings, leading to a tumultuous period of radical social change involving forced equality between the genders, the banning of polygamy (save for those with divine lineage) alongside the rapid revival of industries the Qing had suppressed. Much of the established corporate sector are also brought back into the fold, particularly various arms manufacturers that would later comprise a ballooning military industrial complex. Mandatory indoctrination, propaganda and reeducation programs are also launched that also proved quite effective with the youth, much more so than the old, comprising the Heavenly Kingdom's most zealous base of support.
    • Countless precious texts are burned and rampant vandalism of Buddhist and Confucian icons is encouraged. Mobs of angry zealots in particular flush the cities clear of demonic influence and maleficarum with such hate and ferocity that centuries of ancient Chinese cultural icons and scripture considered "demonic" in origin is destroyed in less than a decade.
    • Sporadic fighting with Qing remnants and malcontents continues intermittently for the next twenty years.
  • 1906
    • On the eve of the 55th anniversary of the Great Taiping Crusade (太平天國運動), rumors swirl of a potential holy war on the horizon as the army swells to a size larger than all that came before with numbers surpassed only by a buildup of arms and equipment that has alarmed international observers. Whether such movements indicate another episode of saber rattling from the Celestial Palace against its neighbors or the heralding of something much more ominous, it remains to be seen.

Claimed refers to what a nation wants to own in the future whether via conquest or diplomacy. Core refers to what they currently control.

Sorry for any confusion. Our apps contain both core territories, which are those that the country actually controls, and claimed territories, which are those to which it makes some claim of right based on history, culture, etc. So the French Commonwealth does not control Luxembourg, but it does go around telling everyone that it should control Luxembourg.

In the event, though, it doesn't matter too much, since the Central European Empire definitely does control Luxembourg. So I'd go with Belgium and the Low Countries. There's a lot of interesting diplomacy to be had there - playing everyone in Europe off against each other.

Was roughly what I was thinking of.

Also - well done on the Taiping app. There's several quite poetic lines there: "equipment of steel, men of wood." "Shiny toys in the hands of children." Good writing. I look forward to staring suspiciously at you over the Himalayas. I also appreciate "Isaac Jaceaux Roberts" - that's a hoot!

Thanks! Glad you liked it.

I had a bit of fun altering the irl names as you can see. :p

We'll see how things go in the IC though. I have a general plot outline in my head that should make Asia more of a powder keg this time around, which should mean more potential interactions. ;)

Full Nation Name : Rossiyskaya respublika, or the Russian Republic
Majority/Official Culture : Russian
Territorial Core : On the map
Territorial Claim : Mongolia, Manchuria, Persia, Finland
Population : Roughly 175 Million

Government Type : Constitutional Elective Monarchy
Government Ideology/Policies : Conservatism, Nationalism, Imperialism
Government Focus : Economic and territorial growth
Head of State : Grand Prince Dmitriy Ivanovich Shakhovskoy
Head of Government : Posadnik Sergei Yulyevich Witte
Government Description : The Russian Republic is an elective constitutional monarchy, with its Prince being elected by the Council of Lords (Sovet gospod). The Prince must be selected from among the cadet branches of the defunct house of Rurik. The Republic derives its legitimacy both from its royal bloodline, and its constitution. The Republic features a bicameral legislature featuring the Veche and the Council of Lords. The Veche is the lower house of the Russian Legislature, which has historically represented the merchant middle class. In recent decades the Veche has begun to better represent its constituents by beginning to include lower classes of Russian society in the lawmaking process. The Republic’s upper house is the Council of Lords. The upper house represents the will of the Russian aristocracy, but has gradually lost its power overtime to the Veche.

Majority/State Religion : Eastern Orthodoxy
Religious Description : The majority of Russians are Eastern Orthodox, but on the frontiers of the Empire there still remain sizable minorities of Tengri, Judaism, Zoroastrian, and other faiths.

Economic Ideologies : Largely Laissez Faire with a few key nationalized industries
Major Production : Raw Materials (cotton, timber, oil, coal, various ores), Foodstuffs, Textiles, Machined goods, etc.
Economic Description : The Russian state retains a handful of state monopolies, otherwise the government takes a hands off approach with the economy.

Development: Modern
Development Description : Having greatly industrialized in the past century, Russia stands as a modern power. That is, at Least in the west. The eastern provinces remain underdeveloped when compared to the lands West of the Urals. This is due to the difficulty of establishing infrastructure in the inhospitable lands of Central Asia and Siberia. However, since construction of a trans-Siberian railway has recently been completed, the East is already evolving to be a much more developed region of the Empire. This industrialization can be owed in some part to the nation’s active suffrage, economic mobility, and property rights provided to every Russian citizen by the country’s constitution.

Army Description : With a standing army of 30 infantry divisions and eight cavalry divisions, the Russian army theoretically has 760,000 professional soldiers at any given time. However, the divisions are often under strength during peacetime. In reserve, the Russians may call upon a further 100 infantry divisions and another eight cavalry divisions. Armed with the cheap but reliable Mosin-Nagant rifle M1891, the entire mobilized military stands at 3.32 million soldiers, among the largest in the world.
Army Weakness : One failing of the army is that it requires there to be trains and such to deploy easily. Because the country is so vast, this can make deployment to more remote regions of the Empire all the harder. And so, it's become apparent that the nation’s army is only as effective as its railways. This is twofold when one considers supply lines. Getting supplies from one end of the Empire to the other can take many weeks, forcing the Russian army to rely on depots of supplies along its long border. Of course, keeping such a long series of depots supplied during times of crisis can be very difficult.
Naval Description : The Republican navy is split into four fleets; Baltic, Black Sea, Pacific and North Sea. The Russian navy consists of 13 pre-dreadnought battleships, 3 coastal battleships, 25 armoured cruisers, 24 protected cruisers, 44 light cruisers, 71 destroyers and 104 torpedo boats. Submarines are being experimented with, with currently 8 serving trial runs in the Baltic and Pacific.
Naval Weakness : With so many separate seas to patrol, the Russian navy is spread thin. Because of this, there is almost no way that the fleet can utilize all their potential in one theater.
Further Military Description : N/A

National Goals : Strengthen the economy, Enlarge the Military, Expand Influence
National Issues : Vast territory to govern, Ambitious neighbors, etc.

History : The East Slavs emerged as a recognizable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Founded and ruled by a Varangian warrior elite and their descendants, the medieval state of Kievan Rus' arose in the 9th century. In 988 it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire, beginning the synthesis of Byzantine and Slavic cultures that defined Russian culture for the next millennium. Rus ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states; most of the Rus' lands were overrun by the Mongol invasion and became tributaries of the nomadic Golden Horde in the 13th century. The Novgorod Republic gradually reunified the surrounding Russian principalities, achieved independence from the Golden Horde, and came to dominate the cultural and political legacy of Kievan Rus'. By the 18th century, the nation had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to become the Russian Empire, stretching from Poland in the west to Manchuria on the east.

The most powerful state to eventually rise to prominence following the destruction of Kievan Rus' was the Republic of Novgorod, also known simply as Novgorodl. While still under the domain of the Mongol-Tatars and with their blessing, Novgorod began to assert its influence in the former Rus' in the early 14th century, gradually becoming the leading force in the process of the Rus' lands' reunification and expansion of Russia. Novgorod's last rival, the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, was a major military power and strong adversary.

Times remained difficult, with frequent raids from many sides. Agriculture suffered with the beginning of the Little Ice Age. As in the rest of Europe, plague was a frequent occurrence between 1350 and 1490. However, because of the lower population density and better hygiene, the death rate from plague was not as severe as in Western Europe, and population numbers recovered by 1500.

Led by Prince Aleksandr Mikhailovich of Novgorod and helped by the Russian Orthodox Church, the united army of Russian principalities inflicted a milestone defeat on the Mongol-Tatars in the 1380 Battle of Kulikovo. Moscow gradually absorbed the surrounding principalities, including formerly strong rivals such as Tver and later Muscovy.

Aleksandr III of Novgorod, also known as "Aleksandr the Great", finally threw off the control of the Mongol Golden Horde and consolidated the whole of Central and Northern Rus' under Novgorod's dominion. He was also the first to take the title "Prince of all the Russias".

In development of the new Russian nation, the Grand Duke Aleksandr was officially crowned the first Grand Prince of All Russia in 1547. The new Grand Prince promulgated a new code of laws known as the Sudebnik of 1550, established the first Russian feudal representative body (Sovet gospod) and introduced local self-management into the rural regions.

The death of Aleksandr marked the end of the ancient Rurik Dynasty in 1598, and in combination with a famine the following year led to civil war. The current system of elective monarchy was established with the Shakhovskoy Dynasty ascending to the throne in 1613 by the decision of the Sovet gospod to elect Mikhail Shakhovskoy as Grand Prince of All Russia. The country then started a gradual recovery from the succession crisis following the extinction of the Rurikid dynasty.

Russians' fur-trade interests fueled their desire to expand east into Siberia. The rapid Russian exploration and colonisation of the large territories of Siberia was led mostly by Cossacks and trappers hunting for valuable furs and ivory. Russian explorers pushed eastward primarily along the Siberian River Routes, and by the mid-17th century there were Russian settlements dotting Eastern Siberia.

In the century following, Russia experienced a new civil war centered around limiting the importance of the Sovet gospod and Grand Prince in favor of the Veche. The creation of a new constitution ensured the gains of this revolution would not be lost. This allowed for the emergence of a stronger middle class and the emancipation of all Russian men.

In the time that followed, the Russian state continued its expansion into Central Asia, Siberia, and other lands. The government has concerned itself largely with the maintenance of its frontier territories and attempting to strengthen its position in the world arena.

God-- why do you have to be so scary?

Not sure if you're referring to Taiping or the French, but yes. ;)

I kind of ran out of steam towards the end of the app, but I may revisit the history section and expand on it another time.

As you're the co-op of the RP, what're your guys policy on self-subjugation? For example, if I control a country, and I decide to relinquish control to another country, thus rapidly expanding the territory of the other user, how will gamemods respond?

If you're just doing it just cause then no, that's stupid. If there's a good reason for it then maybe.

Its hard to say without more context, but this sounds gamey.

Ever since we have run this RP, we haven't yet run into those XDDD

Hmmm... to relinquish control of one's own country... ... ... firstly it has to be something that was pre-approved by both parties. And again, to echo El's opinion, it is stupid to simply cede sovereignty. It would have to have IC ramifications that led up to that event. And even then, it probably has to be pretty believable. We don't see countries simply ceding sovereignty willy-nilly for a reason, you know, so there HAS to be some justification that is believable to the general public and much more to Trace, who is the main OP.

And there is something to do with what you yourself will do after cession is over. Are you going to play as a colonial government within the nation that you have ceded? Then it would require you to edit part or whole of your application to fit the part, and have it be approved again by the OP... since you wouldn't be the same nation anymore. And you would have to pre-arrange what will the relationship between yourself and the colonial overlord would be.

In the end... a lot of work for a small gimmick. And if you are thinking about leaving after the fact... that's not possible. Back when I was the OP I simply put leaver's territory as NPC land and allowed free conquest with the leaver's application nation as a default setting. End of story. No cession needed nor allowed. I would imagine that Trace will honor the same system.

From the medieval age to the dawn of industrialisation, Sweden and Russia fought several wars over the plots of land in between, which is a history I would like to see between Scandinavia and Russia in this RP. The initial divisions in the 13th~14th Centuries, with Finland and Estonia in Scandinavian hands and Karelia and Livonia in Russian, the height of Scandinavian power being in the 1600s with Russia being kicked off the Baltic coast entirely, then two disastrous wars in the 1700s returning most of the Baltic south of the Gulf of Finland being returned to Russia.

Was roughly what I was thinking of.

Considering this Russia's capital would be in Novgorod, I don't know that being entirely driven from the Baltic coasts would be feasible.

When is Scandinavia forming in this iteration?

Nah nah don't worry, I'm not planning on just leaving after the fact. A Colonial Govt. is the idea.

Speaking of which, has anyone claimed to be sucessors to the HRE yet?

Based on your history I can see it sliding into the civil war or the post-Rurikovich interregnum. Those would be good timed to deprive the Russians of a Baltic coast.

I was thinking 13th Century, in response to increased Chalcedonian pressure from the south and the east.
Forward, my comrades, march to your stations,
Righteous and proud! Win, we most surely can.
This is a triumph of peace and of nations,
A dawn of friendship for all people of man!
