Since his ascension to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had lead Spain for the past 6 years and currently had no idea of resigning his post. Spain under his rule has seen some promising times his new government helped to improve the economy of the nation while also improving its international standing in the world as well as a member of EU. For example Spain was one of the first nations to respond to Russian aggression in the Baltic, however at that time Spain and the rest of NATO relied heavily of US support which did not come. Since then Spain has attempted to modernise both it Military and Nation to make up for the gap the US left in Europe. Further military reforms were needed to increase the Military capability of the Spanish nation for Spain had big ambitions for itself.
The Spanish Military Reform Act of 2024 (SMRA 2024)
In order for the Kingdom of Spain to defend both the borders of the nation and the allies of Spain, as well as being able to maintain Spanish Political and Economic interests globally. Today the Cortes Generales has officially drafted and voted in a new piece of legislation meant to improve the Spanish Armed Forces (Fuerzas Armadas Españolas). The Act currently is waiting to be officially signed into law by his Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain. The full details of the SMRA 2024 are as followed:
1. Spain's annually military budget will increase from 2% of the GDP of the nation that was set during the Military emergence powers act of 2022 to 3% of the nation's GDP
2. The Spanish Army (Ejército de Tierra) will be revamping it's military equipment to better suit modern military warfare. This will be done through certain goals that will be reached by the end of 2025:-The design and creation as well as implementation of a Fourth Generation Main Battle Tank
3. The increase of military helicopters with the purchase of 20 Apache Attack Helicopters.
-Replacing the Old G36 rifles with a modern replacement the criteria for the rifle being that it must be chambered to 6.8mm calibre, no heavier then 4kg and must be able to use a multitude of different scopes, optics and attachments. Rifles that meet this criteria will be looked over and decided upon by the "Spanish Military Rifle Selection Board"
4. Increase the development of Sixth Generation Jet Aircraft alongside other European countries as part of the Future Combat Air System
5. Changing the recruitment status of the Spanish Foreign Legion to allow recruits from all nations as long as they are eligible to gain full Spanish citizenship
6. A new report into the state of the Spanish Navy (Armada Española) will commence looking at the capabilities of the Spanish navy and how it measures up to other nations in regard to naval power and power projection
7. An increase of military aircraft from 533 total aircraft to 784 by at least 2027.
With this act the government hoped to that this would show the world a new Spain, one committed to international security. The bill was later signed into law and with it, the long road to a strong and proud Spanish military had begun. But that was not the only business that was done today inside the Spanish government. The foreign minister Arancha González Laya today released an officially statement on recent events in the world. "The Spanish Government would like to state the following officially that Spain supports the rightfully and elected government of Cameroon and has decided that the so called Islamic Republic of Fulania is a rebel organisation acting within the borders of the Republic of Cameroon." In further statements the Foreign Minister spoke about how it would support French efforts in the region to bring about Peace and stability she also stated that "Military action" could be used in very extreme circumstances to bring a conclusion.
In other lighter News, King Felipe and the royal family are planning a Latin American tour in the coming months. This is coming after a recent announcement that King Felipe himself was giving money to a Mexican Water charity in aid to the recent crisis there. Felipe has even spoke about how he wishes to first the areas most affected and see how he and Spain can help to respond to the Crisis calling on a Brotherhood of Hispanics to support each other in these trying times.
