Would it be possible to do something like a salvage operation or introduce diving for military purposes into the game, holing a few ships from Ur with divers, cutting some anchor lines, mischief. Also, possibly locating the sunken ships from Uruk and retrieving some of the equipment and treasure.

I imagine the feasibility of salvage operations will depend on the depth of wrecks and the water you’d be diving in. How would you even know where ship wrecks are?

We might be able to locate some of the wrecks by going where salvage washed up on the shores. These were very large ships. There might be some flotsam, bodies, or other material which might give away the location of some of the ships. Not all of them. We could even end up making a mistake and picking up some merchant junk. This would be a test run. Some people might even have seen some of the pieces of the wrecks if the water is fairly clear. I am not sure yet. Diving would be a specialty at this point.

Do you think some form of simple sonar might be possible?

For us, it would not be something we would be thinking about. What would probably happen is that we would end up with a few ships that would carry our divers to do a few things. We would search and not find things immediately. We would have more luck following up leads around where shipwrecks occurred. We might try out a few local merchant ships first in preparation.

Part of this is based on the ideas of the Greeks who had divers who cut Persian anchor lines and Byzantines who had divers who would hole boats with tools.

We would use open bell. We would lower an open bell into the water with some air trapped in it initially. This was described in the 4th century bc. Basically it comes from the realization that if you turn a pot upside down and drop it in the water, it will hold air. It could develop over time. It might start just with head and shoulders, enough to allow an air supply. We might eventually develop a leather hose.

Sorry for randomly dropping in with some thoughts, but does anyone else think A New Civilizations mod for Crusader Kings III would be blessed? :p

How did he get there, I looked through some previous posts and it looks like he sorta popped there out of nowhere
And you definitely overestimated how fast I'm able to expand, we have only just reached the border of the Pomorze Gdanskie and Kujawsko Pomorskie voivodeships, and while the guys at Torun probably heard of the Confederacy, we are still quite a ways away from being even near Torun

Oh he has been on a naval tour of the nearby Baltic region, and a week or two of sailing up the Vistula is the swiftest method to get from there back to the Imperium proper via Poland. I don't mind moving Kulm north - just didn't have an idea of where the Confederacy extended to.

The biggest problem you'll likely face is the fundamental issue of using surface-pressure air for diving - Boyle's law. Stuffing, say, 90 cubic meters of surface-pressure air into a diving bell, then lowering it merely sixty feet, will cut those 90 cubic meters down to 30, while your divers will still need a cubic meter of air or so every ten minutes when engaging in physical activity. Without a way to pump more air down to your divers, which requires an air compression system of some complexity, the amount of time divers can work at any appreciable depth is very limited.

Hence the reason diving is more or less an early-modern thing. Until mankind developed really solid sealants and pressurization mechanisms (not to mention pressure glass), free diving gets you to about the depth of actual diving pretty easily, with no infrastructure, and no expenditure. Especially given that you'll need a seriously hefty amount of weight to hold an appreciable amount of air down - which means a large amount of labor to, say, strap rocks to your diving bell, or expensive metal.

No, unfortunately, it would require too much modding, some of it way above my skills (I've never done maps before).

Posted, I'm sorry for the Polish in it, but, it was the only way as the word I wanted to use only translated to English as conflagration, and it's the literal meaning of the word, while the word carries so much weight in the Polish language, especially in the context I wanted to use it, as it basically meant to make a bloodbath and burn what remained.

It was good. Could use some color to set the tone. Red for blood, maybe a dull iron for effect. Also show a little terror by physical action or reaction (cowering, screaming).

Would like to show internal growth for the next map. Less, expansion more internal connection (towns, cities, ports). Consolidation.
