Rogue Trader: A chaotic foray into the world of WH40k RPG

Postby Unfallious » Tue Jan 14, 2020 9:50 am

Hello!

Being the proud DM of a successful dnd 5e campaign running in my own region, I've decided to try my hand at something completely different: Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader. Rogue Trader, for those of you who don't know (which is probably everyone,) was an RPG released in 2009 based on the Warhammer 40k roleplaying system. The WH40k rp system is marginally similar to dnd 5e if you have any experience in that. If you don't that's okay! Because I've never ever played Rogue Trader, so we can learn its systems together!

I have recruited a few members of my own region to start a little exploratory campaign into the game, but I'm looking for around 2 or 3 additional individuals to join too! We're planning on holding weekly, or fortnightly sessions on my own Discord server. I will be DMing via voice chat, but you are under no obligation to speak yourself and in my other dnd campaign (held on the same server) the majority elect to type instead. Days and times of each session will change week-to-week depending on scheduling and I'll post little doodle polls at the start of every week so we're totally flexible!

Now, a little bit about the setting:

Rogue Trader is one of several different games based on the Warhammer 40k roleplaying system, but it is unique among them for being the only one not focused on combat. Rogue Trader is, instead, focused on trade, commerce and diplomacy. Although, this is Warhammer, so there will inevitably be a slew of xenos, chaos spawn, and heretics to destroy along the way. In the game you and your fellow players are the crew of a special trading vessel under a captain (selected by agreement of the players before the game starts) with a much coveted Warrant of Trade granting them unique powers and the ability to travel beyond the borders of the Imperium of Man into the untamed, dangerous unknown of the wider Milky Way. Your task: Explore the galaxy for new lush worlds for the Imperium to colonise, trade with disgusting (but profitable) xenos races and generally do what you want so long as it is in the service of the God-Emperor.
Whilst the captain is the individual empowered to do this momentous task, no one person may explore the galaxy alone (and expect to live, anyway), thus he surrounds himself with allies, crew and retainers all with a unique set of skills and abilities. Together, they will venture forth in His name and bring glory to the Imperium (and make a shit load of money).

**

If this sounds like your kinda schtick, do let me know below - Experience in WH40k RPG, the Warhammer universe, or roleplaying in general absolutely not required. Do let me know what your timezone is though.

We shall carry our word,
We will correct and unify,
Hail the Emperor!

Looks like fun.

Out of curiosity, should we expect statistics-based role play? (Ie, intelligence stats, saving throws, etc.)

I also presume that human is the only playable species in this role play, right? Are psychers allowed, then?

I look forward to adventure!
I use my NationStates stats, because a population of billions/trillions and an economy of hundreds of trillions is totally viable, trust me.
But seriously, aside from the population and GDP, just assume that my NS stats are roughly accurate.

Support: Paleo-imperialism, conservatism, libertarianism, Christianity.
Against: Stupid people, resistance to industrial progress, alt-right, any form of government at or beyond socialism.

Takaka Tar' Turayi,
The stars will be ours someday.

Whilst there are supplements that I have access to that do incorporate xenos races into the game, they all assume that the whole party will be of a single race. So, I've settled on a human campaign just because there's more content and the system is primarily oriented on everyone being human (obviously multi-species parties would be really difficult to justify in-universe due to the whole xenophobia thing in the Imperium).

Yes, you should expect a degree of statistic-based playing, though personally I take a very lax approach to stats because I don't particular like numbers so I will always err on the side of 'that sounds cool lets do that' rather than doing a billion rolls in a session. Rogue Trader is also constructed purely based on d10 rolls, it's the only dice you'll need and I've been told the most you'll ever roll at once is 2d10 so it's not complex by any means (don't worry if you don't have physical dice, there's a dice-rolling bot available), though if you google the Rogue Trader character sheet you may be under the impression that it's more complex than it actually is.

Finally, yes psykers are definitely allowed! How would we navigate the warp without our navigator? From what I can tell there are at least 2 psyker-orientated career paths, one of which (the navigator) is integral to the game.

If this still holds your interest, feel free to drop me a telegram and I'll give you the link to the discord.
