PACIFIA

Roleplay Here - IC

Welcome to the country of Pacifia!

This country covers most of the west coast of the USA, from the north tip of Washington to the southern tip of California.

The capital is the Californian city of Sacramento.

In this roleplay, there will be an upcoming election! The following four parties are the major parties to be standing, but feel free to suggest your own:

Pacifia National Party (PNP) - centre-right to right-wing party that is currently in government.
Liberal Socialist Party (LSP) - left-wing populist party that is currently the second largest party.
Reform Nationalist Party (RNP) - right-wing populist nationalist party - usually gets 5-10% of vote, but has very few elected officials.
Oregon National Party (ONP) - centre-left independence movement for the Pacifian province of Oregon - usually gets around 40-50% of votes in Oregon, and 5-10% overall.

There are two elected chambers in the Pacifia Legislature - Parliament, and the Senate. The Parliament is the Lower Chamber, which elects 300 MPs (Members of Parliament - one per each parliamentary constituency). Here is how parliament is going before the election:

156 PNP MPs
122 LSP MPs
7 ONP MPs
3 RNP MPs
(12 seats for left for new parties)

The Senate is the lower chamber, which elects 50 Senators (two per each Senate region). Here is how it is going before the election:

21 PNP Senators
20 LSP Senators
2 ONP Senators
1 RNP Senator
(6 Senate seats left for new parties)

The winning party needs to have at least either a majority in Parliament and largest number of seats in the Senate (or vice versa) OR have the largest amount of influence over the legislature (most amount of Senators + MPs). The leader of the winning party becomes the President, who is usually also a Senator.

Here are positions that we need to fill:

Current Leader of ONP (ONP Senator/MP)
Current Leader of RNP (RNP Senator/MP)
Leader/Senator/MP of other political parties
Senators/MPs of PNP/LSP/ONP/RNP

Major Senate seats (to be filled)

-San Francisco - 1 LSP Senator
-Los Angeles - 1 LSP Senator
-Portland - 1 LSP Senator, 1 ONP Senator
-Seattle - 2 LSP Senators

You can also create new Senate seats/parliamentary constituencies.

President - Jonathan Smith

(For dates, I assumed that it is 2020. If not, I can change them)

Name: Jonathan Smith
Age: 62
Height: 1'78
Appearance:

Background:

Having studied at Harvard (Bachelor in Social Studies and Master in Businesses Administration) and Stanford (Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy), he worked as a financial analyst at the corporate finance divisions of various important banks for six years. He then worked at McKinsey as a consultant for four years, before becoming an active member of the Pacifia National Party.

He was elected senator in 2000 and became known as a 'fiscal hawk' and a staunch fiscal conservative. In 2008, he made an unsuccessful bidding to become leader of the PNP but failed. Nevertheless, he won almost 35% in the leadership election. After the PNP lost an election to the LSP in 2012, Smith found the opportunity to launch a successful leadership bid in his party. He combined fiscal conservatism with moderate social liberalism (on issues such as abortion and gay marriage) but with a tough, nationalist stance on immigration. Attracting a coalition of conservatives, libertarians and nationalists, he won an overwhelming victory in 2016 and became President.

As President he deregulated the market, slashed income and corporate taxation and took a tough stance on immigration, jailing illegal immigrants on jail camps. On social issues, he legalized marijuana for recreational use but generally refrained from implementing any more socially liberal policies.

Now he faces a tough reelection campaign. His jail camps for immigrants have come under intense media scrutiny for human rights violations and allegations of torture; this has forced Smith to promise better conditions for immigrants and to take a turn to the left on migration, creating an opening for the hardliners of the RNP while failing to convince moderates that he will really change his policies. His tax cuts are popular but have ballooned the deficit. On foreign policy, his free trade agreements with neighboring countries are coming under attack by protectionist politicians. On his credit, he had a rather strong economic performance and somewhat popular tax cuts.

Party: PNP
Constituency/Senate seat/Hometown: Los Angeles

FYI - Elections since 2000

2000 - LSP wins with 157 MPs, 24 Senators
2004 - PNP wins with 151 MPs, 26 Senators
2008 - PNP wins with 150 MPs, 25 Senators
2012 - LSP wins with 161 MPs, 26 Senators
2016 - PNP wins with 156 MPs, 21 Senators - 42% of vote, LSP had 40%

To win at least 150 MPs and the highest share of Senators, it is projected that the PNP needs to win at least 38-42% of the vote, whilst the LSP must win at least 42-46% of the vote. This is a projection of the share needed to win, and may change drastically.

Name: Mary Brown
Age: 60
Height: 1.62m
Appearance:

Background:
Born in San Francisco, Mary came from a working-class family. She was brought up as a semi-religious Christian, and attended Central San Francisco Elementary School, and Central San Francisco High School. After that, she attended San Francisco State University, graduating with honours. She then worked as a community organiser, joining the Liberal Socialist Party is 1982 at the age of 22. She became heavily involved in the party, as an activist and organiser. She was elected to Parliament as an MP for the North East San Francisco constituency in 1992. As an MP, she was very critical of PNP governments, and quickly gained a reputation as a very loud voice within the LSP.

In 2000, after 8 years in the Legislature as an MP, she was handpicked by the LSP leader to stand for the San Francisco senate seat one of the previous LSP Senators stood down. This was a huge deal, as San Francisco is one of the safest Senate seats for the LSP in all of Pacifia. As a Senator, she wrote and co-sponsored countless progressive bills, including the Marriage Equality Act.

In 2016, after the LSP's election defeat, the previous leader decided to stand down. She decided to run for leader, however, at the beginning of the leadership elections, she failed to stand out amongst a field of highly experienced Senators, some of whom had been Senators for more than 30 years. However, she managed to build up momentum as she gained popularity amongst young people and communities of colour within the LSP. In a shocking upset, she won 53.2% of votes cast in the leadership election becoming leader.

There are now high expectations for her in the upcoming election. If she doesn't lead her party to victory, she will most likely be pressured to step down.
