(Map was made pretty quickly, I'm aware it's not the prettiest!)

Concept:

This thread is simply to work out how much interest there is in a concept like this, and if it's there, I'll be writing up descriptions of each of the various kingdoms, races and mythical sights of the land!

Of Hearts and Men is a mild-fantasy, character-based Role-Play. Set in the fictional land of Sola. In this RP, you’ll be playing as one of the numerous Barons, Counts and Dukes of the Heartlands - a region comprised of hundreds, if not thousands of independent states, who’ve only been able to maintain their sovereignty due to the conflicting interests of the neighbouring great powers, and the direct, sworn protection of the Reichgard in the north. In an almost Holy Roman Empire esque system. In this world, magic is a rarity - almost mythical in nature - with the number of people able to wield it, countable on a single hand. Mythical beasts such as Wyverns, Gryphons and other such creatures of legend continue to walk the Earth, with the most fearsome and rarest of them being larger creatures, such as: The mighty Dragon, or Kraken.

The technology level of this RP can be best described as ‘High Middle Ages’ with Crossbows just beginning to come into mainstream usage and plate-armour more common than ever. Unlike our world’s high middle ages, however, the population of this land is exponentially larger, due to increased fertility, long-periods of peace, abundance of farmland and the lack of any seriously devastating diseases. Though, soon - much of this will change, and the world of Sola will be plunged into anarchy. With the increasingly militant White-Star in the South mobilizing, rumours of a lethal plague spreading throughout the Aldori Confederation and wild beasts growing bolder by the day, all across the Heartlands.

The focus of the RP will largely revolve around the intrigue and diplomacy leading up to the Great War, which will commence when the White Star’s armies march against the Heartlands, many of the Heartlanders will likely betray their own and join the invading forces in hopes of gaining spoils in the aftermath. While many others, will choose to march alongside Reichgard and whatever other allies they’ve amassed to defend their homeland. The war playing out in the second chapter of the RP.

Recent History:

The Empire of the White Star has seen rapid expansion in recent years, her armies making quick work of the small border-kingdoms that once separated her from the Confederation Aldori’s mainland holdings, as well as the immensely wealthy Rhodia. Her territory said to have grown by 10% in the last six years. Her fresh levies and reinforcements from the East, following her subjugation of the Eastern steppes and deserts giving her an immense and highly experienced force believed to be numbering in the hundreds of thousands, if not just breaching a Million. At first, many thought little of it - the White Star’s territorial claims to the East had long been known, and few were surprised when she mobilized her forces against the Sultanates and Nomads.

What did take people by surprise, however - was when those very same armies took a swing at the North. First devouring the Kingdom of Potsk, then the Kingdom of Felraven and finally the Republic of Toulasse. Alarm quickly spread, for now the Empire’s armies stood fully mobilized and primed to strike at Auchland, Rhodia and the Confederation - in a hurried panic, treaties were signed, the Rhodians and Auchlanders pledging to rally to one another’s aid should either of them be attacked by the Empire, but sadly, the Confederation was not to be so lucky - for as the Emissaries made their way to her lands, to sign a similar treaty. They found her fate was to be the same as Toulasse, Potsk and Felraven. Imperial troops had crossed the Dalmere river and decisively defeated the 12,000 strong Confederation Army garrisoned there. The war had already begun.

Quickly Auchland and Rhodia called their banners, rallying their forces - but something was wrong. The Duke of Helvanthia never sent the troops he’d pledged to his king in Auchland, instead his armies quickly crossed the borders of his Duchy and seized three key fortresses just outside his forest from the Auchlander royal forces. And now continue marching north, looting the land and setting ablaze to any settlement they encounter, threatening to cut the Auchlanders off from their Rhodian allies. Many suspect, the Helvanthian duke may have been given assurances by his White Star neighbours in the south. And perhaps even support in the form of a vast Mercenary Army.

In the North, Reichgard has reiterated its support of the Heartlanders, stating that should the Empire march beyond the mountains and into their lands, the full might of the Reich will be at their backs to meet the threat, and put an end to it - once and for all.

In the East, another war brews - with Rustania laying claim to Ostland’s southern woodlands and mountains, with each side’s allies at one another’s throats too: Konigsant, a dedicated ally to Rustania urging them to strike, so that they have the Casus Belli they’ve long awaited to move into the Ostland tributary Ostant’s territories. Meanwhile Telant pushes both sides towards war, so that the great powers are distracted with one another, leaving them free to march into Coplant and annex the fledgling Kingdom, who’d only recently found unity, after a twenty-year civil war.

Further information on the two key regions:

Where to begin when speaking of the White Star? For a start, it’s perhaps the oldest and most prestigious of all the realms of men - it’s origins going back thousands of years, to the days of the Golden Age of Mankind, when man found itself united under a single banner. One mighty Empire spanning continents, dabbling in magics beyond our wildest imaginations and taming even the mighty Dragons to do their will. It’s unknown what this ancient Human Empire was named, its name, colours and even its dialects are lost to time. But what is known, is that after the calamity - a mythical event in which it is said that demons rose up from Hell itself to tear down the mighty Empire. One member of the ruling dynasty survived - a bastard by the name of Julian ‘the Righteous Flame’ of the South.

During the calamity he rallied what remained of the Royal armies and held the vicious creatures at bay long enough for the Imperial Mages to slam shut the gates of hell and drive them from surface of Solas once again. However, in the aftermath of the war - with the entire Empire in ruins and communication between the provinces nearly impossible, it was unreasonable to assume that he could simply pick up the pieces and return to what they once were. Especially when many among the old aristocracy and military hierarchy blamed Julian’s family for the calamity in the first place. Saying that their decadence and acceptance of magic brought the demons from their plain to our own.

Many turned their weapons against the Princling and in the ensuing civil war, he was forced to flee to the ancient city of Starbrook. Whos flag was the Royal white star upon a plain black background. Here he would defeat the pursuing rebel forces, and in honour of the city - he granted their coat of arms the use of his golden crest. Circling their white star with gold, to represent this royal honour. Allas, despite his initial victory, he couldn’t hope to defeat the rebel’s near unending numbers, and surrendered himself only a week later.

His execution would follow swiftly, along with that of almost all of the Empire’s mages. With the Prince dead, and the Empire shattered - soon the various warlords would carve out their own realms and for a time - nearly all the land was in a similar state to the Heartlands, divided into tiny city states and baronies. Among these Baronies, stood the city of Starbrook, its black banner flying proudly over the city’s immense fortress. And with its veteran forces, it’d go on to crush its neighbours, and carve out a nation for itself, renaming formally to the Kingdom of the White Star, before later, upon its expansion into the Eastern Steppes and Desert, rebranding once again into the Empire of the White Star.

Ah, the fertile Heartlands: shattered and broken like a pane of glass, glittering in a thousand pieces. Once this place was a bustling hub for the old Empire of Man, feeding vast swaths of the Imperial domain and producing an abundance of commerce due to its strategic positioning along the north-western edge of the continent. In legend, even during the calamity, it was here that the Empire rallied its greatest force against the Demonic hordes. Its vast host sallying out to clash with the beasts in what is now Konigsant.

It’s said that so many men of the Heartlands perished in the conflict, that entire dynasties were destroyed. Many turned on one another, blaming each other’s cowardice and lack of skill for their defeats, prior to the eventual victory of Mankind. This is rumoured to be the cause of such division that even still now, reflects itself in the geopolitics of the land. Their fierce sense of Independence stemming from their continued distrust of one-another, rendering them a difficult bunch to subjugate. And with several thousands of years of infighting and biases entrenching themselves, it may be a long time yet before this land sees unity once again.

Character concept: A lord who's legitimately the greatest warrior of his generation in regards to 1-on-1 combat, but not particularly skilled in any other area, and terrible at maintaining the loyalty of his subordinates or the trust of his allies due to being a huge prick, meaning that he will likely end up as a sort of enforcer for another character (or characters...) rather than becoming a powerful force in his own right.

I would like to know more about magic in this world. Is it low fantasy magic or high fantasy magic?

Magic will be fantastical and almost god-like to the everyday person. The number of people able to wield it globally, never mind just on this continent, could likely be counted on one hand. And most people likely have no idea who these people are, simply because half the population would lynch them and the other half would exploit them to their own ends.

I’d be willing to let you be one of the very best, like top 20, but having you indisputably number one could be iffy territory. Just for the sake of plot. ;)

In terms of dueling skill there should be multiple number ones, many of which could be in a guard of sorts.

Yeah, every head of state is likely to have their own guard composed of the best from their realm, with some such as the White Star having an advantage just due to the immense talent pool available to them. And their wealth allowing them to simply buy the most talented men from abroad too.

Are we gonna be facing demon invasions or White Walkers or is this purely about political intrigue and medieval warfare?

Not in the foreseeable future. The first two chapters will revolve around Medieval Warfare, Politics & Intrigue. But as time goes on, who knows? I may even do another RP / chapter based in the past, in the times of legend etc.

Sure, yeah. I just was thinking the character would be a kind of impulsive, untrustworthy, and generally unpleasant person who you normally wouldn't want to associate with, if not for his unmatched abilities. That could create all sorts of interesting plots and conflicts. The thing is, if there's an excess of characters who are his match in combat *and* are likeable and intelligent, he would have no value or significance.

Those most like the Mongols would've formerly lived in the South-East of the map, which as you can see is now White Star territory. They fell due to the immense numbers the Empire could field, internal betrayals and local mercenaries selling their own out and fighting alongside the Empire during its invasion and now the land is dotted with Imperial colonies and fortresses.

Union Princes wrote:since this is high medieval age technology, will we start seeing primitive cannons in development?

For now, I'll say that black powder, or something similar - is still yet to be discovered.

There's not going to be a huge abundance who match any of the great warriors, the population is vast and the amount of people you'd be able to face in combat, even without being number one - would make you significantly influential and in demand by more powerful or wealthy individuals.
