Romantic Survivor Game (Comedy)
Work in Progress....
Wouldn’t It Be Lava-Ly?

Welcome to Romantic Survivor, a game show where a group of romantically inclined contestants are transported to a lovely tropical volcanic island and the last two contestants to avoid a lava-ly death get a lifetime free timeshare of a staffed mansion on beautiful Seppuku Isle.

How does our game work, you may ask? Every week (in game life, not necessarily IRL), the contestants will perform whatever ridiculous tasks our tickle our producers’ fancy. The two top scorers will be safe from being voted into becoming part of the island while the other contestants will try to convince their fellows that one or more of the other contestants would be a more acceptable sacrifice.

While this RP is storytelling, I am including character personal statistics so that the characters can explore their strengths and weaknesses, as well as compare themselves against the other characters.

My starting thoughts are that the players have thirty points to distribute to their characters between the following attributes, with at least one point in each attribute and no more than ten points in any attribute:
Physical Beauty-Health
Powers of Observation
Improvisation Skills
Offensive Social Skills
Defensive Social Skills
Luck

What do you think of the skill list? Should there be a way to boost the skills?

What about hindrances? Maybe ONE hindrance that gives ONE extra point to assign to skills, like 'becomes paralyzed for five seconds at the sight of a totally naked person' ? I don't know, but a hindrance can provide literary flavor.

What about extraterrestrial/supernatural powers? Really?!?!? If your character had anything like superpowers, they would be conquering the world or saving the world from conquest. That said, in the name of storytelling your character might have some minor power like always knowing the correct way to plug in a USB cord correctly the very first time, going into a trance and completing a complicated crossword puzzle in five minutes or impressively playing pop songs on the spoons. Animal/Extraterrestrial features could work, but they shouldn't provide the character any advantage over the 'normal human' characters.

Multiple characters per player, YES! How many? Not sure. The players ought to have some throw-aways, along with their favorites....
Island features notes:
Baby Shark.
Bamboo
Banana Trees.
Bats / Flying Foxes.
Cannibals with Boats.
Carnivorous Tropical Plants.
Coconut Trees.
Crabs.
Grotto / Sea Caves.
Lagoon.
Locations for Contestant (“Tribe”) Camp Sites.
Long Tailed Macaques (Monkeys).
Macadamia Nut Trees.
Mad Scientist with a Motor Yacht.
Momma Shark.
Mountain Caves.
Palm Trees.
Passion Fruit Trees.
Pesky Birds.
Pesky Insects (that have painful bites/stings)
Polynesian Rat Colonies.
Prawns.
Production Crew Compound.
Pythons.
Running Streams for Fresh Water.
Secluded Romantic Locations.
Tarantulas.
Taro Tree.
Tiger (Arriving on a Raft).
Volcano.

HELP!!!
I could use some help building the Island/Game-Show. It obviously has a volcano. What else? Should there be a map? A Host and an Assistant? A film crew that's not allowed to help the contestants in any way, despite whatever danger?

I have bookmarked the topic. Recommendations to come soon, hopefully.
I use my NationStates stats, because a population of billions/trillions and an economy of hundreds of trillions is totally viable, trust me.
But seriously, aside from the population and GDP, just assume that my NS stats are roughly accurate.

I'm tagging this to give some advice. I do have some ideas you could work with, perhaps.

RPs I do
- How do you do fellow kids? You want to see something violent? - Artemis: Deimos Trafficking League (Horror/Mature)
- Descend into the forgotten tourist traps of Florida on this transgressive RP! - The Community (Mature/Black Comedy/Slice-of-Life)

My overall account that I use for P2TM and even for international roleplaying! Alright, here's some following advice.

1. Setting.

The setting and basis of the IC show seems to be a parody of Paradise Hotel and Bachelor in Paradise. Important rule is to keep the volcano (going to be completely important and has plenty of ideas to do). Provide amenities for your contestants to pleasure themselves, so they can use them to socialize with others. Every week, have the show provide new amenities (providing new types of alcohol to loosen some mouths, host a limbo contest, movie night!, do a party of some sort, etc) or/and have special rewards for contestants who had won a challenge (give the winner the option to spend more quality time with another contestant of their choosing, have their body tended to a fancy massage, free helicopter ride or trip, a visit from contestant's loved ones). Punishment for losing a challenge is optional, though if you plan on doing so, have the contestant with the least amount of points from a challenge have it (diet of slop "Big Brother" style, being forced to do housekeeping, or have them punished with other embarrassing or sadistic punishments for the sake of providing Romantic Survivor the views from audiences it deserves!).

Btw.. One comedy tip. Have your show be made by FOX. Some people will get the context, almost immediately. Not TLC, they are weird.

2. Relationships.

While most dating shows focus heavily on having a couple, there are times where the concept can change. While male and female contestants being together are common or pretty much required for most dating reality shows, some things can be different.. *cough* Bisexuality *cough cough*. If a contestant is not worried in dating the other side, have them date any that are interested in the same sexuality as them. The show could probably exploit this, though it's best for the show to let the contestants choose who is eligible for them, without raising controversy. Also, having a player RP as two characters (since they want to date from both sides) is a good idea.

3. Overall Gameplay

I think it's best to scrap the attributes with points. This can be confusing for many, since it could be difficult to have a character get an attribute that they believe would suit them. Though, you can list if a contestant has a skill that makes them stand out from the rest of the others. Hindrances can count, also. If you're aiming to have the same craziness as Zjaum's RP, powers can be allowed, since the RP was a satire of anime. Though, this RP can parody a lot of reality shows off the top of my head. Characters anime-styled can be allowed, though let's not focus too much on having contestants have powers.

I'm thinking more 'Survivor' than anything with a house or a hotel. Plus, luxury accommodations will make a great prize. Thanks for reminding me about rewards and prizes! Love the idea of alcohol and drunken characters, too! Not sure about penalties for not winning..., not having the prize ought to be bad enough.

Sorry, I didn't get the joke about why FOX would be a good/funny network.

We can definitely have some PG-rated sexual situations. One episode might separate the sexes and maybe throwing in some kind of aphrodisiac. Something else might be an islander-trap-beauty-contest (with guest judges) for the guys and a party with girls brought to the island and the contestant girls as reverse-traps.

I think that the use of attributes still has some merits. I want the characters to size each other up and not act like gods. With the attributes we can explore some of the stereotypes: Beautiful/Muscular Air-Heads, Brainy Wimps/Wimp-ettes, Average Janes/Joes. We will probably discuss this more.

On a lighter note, there's Total Drama Island. Check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAIP2XRovho

Fox had a rather infamous track record with reality shows in the 00's. They still have the whole reality TV craze, though they arent as crazy as TLC. But Fox were...BAD with reality TV in the 00s.

And Total Drama Island was hilarious.

Suggestion for a challenge:

The absolute best challenge Survivor ever did was in Survivor: Fiji, where the tribes had to learn a traditional Fijian dance, get decked out in paint and leaves, with a spear, and dance the meke in front of 3 Fijian judges. That was great. Maybe that challenge could be brought back.

Is it supposed to be a realistic island or one with all kinds of classic tropes? Ancient magical temples, aliens, weird portals, Japanese hold-outs, etc... The latter option could be fun.

Right now, as the first experiment, I'm going with stereotypes and tropes..., maybe more fantastic stuff later or in another season of the show....

Well, maybe some huge creatures. ;)

Island features notes:
Volcano.
Mountain Caves.
Lagoon.
Grotto / Sea Caves.
Coconut Trees.
Carnivorous Tropical Plants.
Bats / Flying Foxes.
Pesky Birds.
Pythons.

Baby Shark / Momma Shark....

What else?

The angry indigenous tribesmen idea is a great idea. I can just see some sort of romantic survivor type date happening at a candlelit table on the beach, only for the couple to be accosted by guys in tribal get up, warpaint, and spears.

Love the suggestions!

More ideas:
A production compound with an electric fence for the show's host(s) and camera crew to rest when they aren't actively filming.
A couple of campsites for the "tribes".
Some naturally beautiful places for romantic encounters.
a couple of running streams for fresh water.
A Mad Scientist (with a monstrous henchman) who loves reality shows and pitches an idea to the producers.

Is anyone here (or knows someone who is) a map-maker?

Ideas:
- An area that is only accessible for one hour of the day, because of tides. However, if you fail to return after that hour, you're trapped on that island for the next day. We could hide something there, maybe. Why not?
- People on yachts who just came from two private islands over and who have no idea that this reality TV show is going on.
- Roving bands of feral pigs
- Hut-building competitions
- Maori haka challenge
- Reeds that look like they'd be perfect for clothing but which actually have the qualities of poison oak/poison ivy

With regards to attributes with points, I would keep those in if you're planning on doing something with them. If you're pitting one player against the other, is the winner based on who hams it up the most, or will some players be better at unique things? Adding points means that people are going to wargame along a more specific path. Which is perfectly fine; people can roleplay along their strengths. I do it all the time. That said, no-points opens up alternate venues. Points are at least a very good way to determine, objectively, which character is better at something.

Did we ditch the map idea? Would you like me to make a map once everything's solidified?

I've had a question in a telegram about alternative lifestyle relationships....

As long as it's PG-13, I will allow them.

It's up to the players to make it funny.

No OP yet.

One of the things I was hoping to accomplish before starting the OOC & IC was finding out if I was getting reliable writers and set up the island's features (get a map going or at least make a list of where some things are in relation to other things).

I think it's about a week out (crossing fingers).

Although I'm not a participant in this, I've got a suggestion - helicopter camera views with cross hair.

Go to YouTube and look up "Police Camera Action - When Did You Last See Your Motor?" for this, at around the 21:36 mark you will see what I mean.

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLGcNljZp0U - from ITV documentary series Police Camera Action, produced in July 1997, aired January 1998.

Also from the same show, at 9:36, is thermal-imaging cameras, which could go with the helicopter theme.

This allows opportunity for commentary, maybe even in a British accent similar to what they have in the footage.

Just some suggestions, hope these helped.

Good luck with this RP.
