~A post-apocalyptic roleplay~
August 8th 1918
The end is nigh. After the tactically successful, but strategically disastrous German spring offensive earlier in the year, the Entente is readying itself for a final push against the central powers. The Austro-Hungarian empire stands on the brink of collapse, both on the Italian front and in the Balkans. The Ottomans are on the retreat in the Levant. Germany is starving, devoid of consumer goods, and after overextending itself massively for a final all-or-nothing attack, its armies stand ready to fall. The German monarchy is to fall with it. After four and a half years of brutal struggle, the war will truthfully, finally be over.
It has been a long war, and a bloody one at that. Initial expectations that the war would be over by Christmas 1914 were dashed when the German army dug itself in following its Schlieffen offensive. While it was not a complete stalemate, as occasional gains were still made, these gains were often small in comparison to the loss of life associated with them. Both sides tried desperately to force a decisive battle on the western front, but Haig’s expected cavalry breakthrough and Hindenburg’s collapse by attrition did not happen. After over four years of war, it is to be exhaustion, not brilliant tactics and a glorious battle, that will decide this conflict.
The last months have been testing. The Entente forces have been reinforced by American volunteers. These troops are fresh, but brought a much-needed morale boost, and supported vital parts of the line so more veteran troops could be moved to important sectors. Meanwhile, the Germans have been strengthened by divisions from the east, where the collapse of imperial Russia made peace on that front possible. Although important, due to Austrian incompetence in the field the Germans had to send their armies south as well. With the help of the most odious inventions humanity ever devised, from grenades to flame throwers to poisonous gas, these divisions tried one last time to break the Entente. They failed. Within months, the war will be over.
In this roleplay you will play one of the soldiers in a British platoon, stationed just outside the French town of Bray-sur-Somme. You are not a veteran. You are not especially well-trained. You have not seen combat before. You have only heard the rumbling guns in the distance, and seen the thunder of artillery. You have seen the wounded pouring in from the front, and you have heard tales of the trenches. You have never seen a German in your life.
A week ago, your platoon crossed the river Somme unopposed. The platoon was to hold the bridge over the river to allow for troops to cross freely on the eighth, to ensure safe passage and make sure the Germans would not oppose them on the other side. To ensure surprise, radio silence was ordered. The platoon was to hold until the attacking force came by them, and they would receive new orders afterwards. Today is the eighth. There have been no troops.
Supplies are enough to last you another week. This was to allow for some last-minute adjustments in battle plans. You have not received word yet of anything out of the ordinary. As far as you are concerned, the attack is still under way. You have no clue about the horror that occurred outside your isolated little bubble of the front. An underestimation would be that the course of human history would be forever changed.
Hello and welcome to my new RP, The Sun Never Sets. Without spoiling too much, I can say that this is a post-apocalyptic RP about British soldiers in France, at the end of the Great War. Something terrible has occurred in the wider world outside the knowledge of our characters, and they will have to work their way out of it the best way they can. I am, however, not interested in good soldiers. I don’t want cold-blooded killers and born fighters. I want actual people, with fleshed-out lives and backstories. Clock makers, factory workers, farmers, and students. You will all play as conscripts in the British army, young or old, with something to return to once the war ends. I want to hear the stories of normal people, like you and me, in what will be the most horrendous chapter of their lives.
With that said, I hope I have peaked your interest. Below is the application form, which is quite minimalistic. Most of this will have to be told through the story. I hope you will be able to convey your character not simply by stating who they are, but really writing it, by showing how they deal with adversary and trauma. The bio should not be longer than a paragraph, therefore. Keep every other answer to a few key words.
I encourage players to engage each other here in the OOC as well. As these people will have been together for at least a few weeks now, they will know one another. Some will like each other, others not so much. This is natural human behaviour, and even in a war zone, people will always remain people. Maybe the farm boys will flock together, or people from the same city will hit it off. Be creative, and be genuine, is what I would ask of you. Your app will serve
