~A post-apocalyptic roleplay~

Bray-sur-Somme, France
August 8th 1918

The end is nigh. After the tactically successful, but strategically disastrous German spring offensive earlier in the year, the Entente is readying itself for a final push against the central powers. The Austro-Hungarian empire stands on the brink of collapse, both on the Italian front and in the Balkans. The Ottomans are on the retreat in the Levant. Germany is starving, devoid of consumer goods, and after overextending itself massively for a final all-or-nothing attack, its armies stand ready to fall. The German monarchy is to fall with it. After four and a half years of brutal struggle, the war will truthfully, finally be over.

It has been a long war, and a bloody one at that. Initial expectations that the war would be over by Christmas 1914 were dashed when the German army dug itself in following its Schlieffen offensive. While it was not a complete stalemate, as occasional gains were still made, these gains were often small in comparison to the loss of life associated with them. Both sides tried desperately to force a decisive battle on the western front, but Haig’s expected cavalry breakthrough and Hindenburg’s collapse by attrition did not happen. After over four years of war, it is to be exhaustion, not brilliant tactics and a glorious battle, that will decide this conflict.

The last months have been testing. The Entente forces have been reinforced by American volunteers. These troops are fresh, but brought a much-needed morale boost, and supported vital parts of the line so more veteran troops could be moved to important sectors. Meanwhile, the Germans have been strengthened by divisions from the east, where the collapse of imperial Russia made peace on that front possible. Although important, due to Austrian incompetence in the field the Germans had to send their armies south as well. With the help of the most odious inventions humanity ever devised, from grenades to flame throwers to poisonous gas, these divisions tried one last time to break the Entente. They failed. Within months, the war will be over.

In this roleplay you will play one of the soldiers in a British platoon, stationed just outside the French town of Bray-sur-Somme. You are not a veteran. You are not especially well-trained. You have not seen combat before. You have only heard the rumbling guns in the distance, and seen the thunder of artillery. You have seen the wounded pouring in from the front, and you have heard tales of the trenches. You have never seen a German in your life.

A week ago, your platoon crossed the river Somme unopposed. The platoon was to hold the bridge over the river to allow for troops to cross freely on the eighth, to ensure safe passage and make sure the Germans would not oppose them on the other side. To ensure surprise, radio silence was ordered. The platoon was to hold until the attacking force came by them, and they would receive new orders afterwards. Today is the eighth. There have been no troops.

Supplies are enough to last you another week. This was to allow for some last-minute adjustments in battle plans. You have not received word yet of anything out of the ordinary. As far as you are concerned, the attack is still under way. You have no clue about the horror that occurred outside your isolated little bubble of the front. An underestimation would be that the course of human history would be forever changed.

Hello and welcome to my new RP, The Sun Never Sets. Without spoiling too much, I can say that this is a post-apocalyptic RP about British soldiers in France, at the end of the Great War. Something terrible has occurred in the wider world outside the knowledge of our characters, and they will have to work their way out of it the best way they can. I am, however, not interested in good soldiers. I don’t want cold-blooded killers and born fighters. I want actual people, with fleshed-out lives and backstories. Clock makers, factory workers, farmers, and students. You will all play as conscripts in the British army, young or old, with something to return to once the war ends. I want to hear the stories of normal people, like you and me, in what will be the most horrendous chapter of their lives.

With that said, I hope I have peaked your interest. Below is the application form, which is quite minimalistic. Most of this will have to be told through the story. I hope you will be able to convey your character not simply by stating who they are, but really writing it, by showing how they deal with adversary and trauma. The bio should not be longer than a paragraph, therefore. Keep every other answer to a few key words.

I encourage players to engage each other here in the OOC as well. As these people will have been together for at least a few weeks now, they will know one another. Some will like each other, others not so much. This is natural human behaviour, and even in a war zone, people will always remain people. Maybe the farm boys will flock together, or people from the same city will hit it off. Be creative, and be genuine, is what I would ask of you. Your app will serve

Are we limited to only British characters? Does that include the dominions, or perhaps could we expand to French or Belgian characters?

Because of the way the British army is organised, the characters will have to live in Britain. However, they could certainly be immigrants, either from the dominions or the colonies. But they would have to be British nationals.

Of course! Here you go:

Application: The Sun Never Sets

Name: Henry Gordon Hatfield
Age: 26
Place of residence: London, England
Previous occupation: Banking clerk
Personal relations:
Father: Gordon Hatfield (59)
Mother: Elizabeth Hatfield-Bernards (56)
Sister: Florence Hatfield (24)
Wife: Lisa Hatfield-Tuppence (25)
Son: Gordon Henry Hatfield (2 months)
Biography: Henry was born and raised in London. He studied history in university before becoming a banking clerk for Lloyds Bank, a job that comes with a lot of financial security but not a lot of action. Henry met his wife Lisa on the working floor there. At the end of 1917 Henry was conscripted into the army as banking jobs were no longer considered vital, and because of his university studies he was given a quick officer's course. His son was born while he was being shipped to France. Lisa has taken up her job at the bank again, and her's and Henry's parents take turns caring for little Gordon while she is away.
First impression: Henry has a nigh-constant thousand yard stare, and stiff lips that have trouble opening up when there's strangers about. When meeting new people, he keeps up a veneer of professionalism in order not to have to converse much.
Personality: Once you have gained his trust, though, Henry is happy to share. When that happens, he won't stop talking about his wife, his son (whom he has only heard of in letters) and trains. Henry can tell you everything there is to know about railway infrastructure.
Hobbies: Trains, football, having a pint with his dad
Likes: The smell of freshly cut grass, train infrastructure, history, coffee
Dislikes: Dairy products, cold weather, not knowing what's going on

Rank: Second lieutenant
Weapon: Short magazine Lee-Enfield

Appearance: A straight back, athletic leg build, but narrow shoulders and a flax moustache. Slightly less tall than average. Hazel eyes and large ears.
The name's James. James Usari. Well, my name is not actually James Usari, so don't bother actually looking it up, but it'll do for now.

I'm terribly sorry but I cannot seem to find anything for the structure of a British Army platoon during the First World War, would it be correct in assuming its the same as the current structure with one officer?

Curious, does the unit have a certain designation? I know that some British units all joined up from the same town, so I was curious whether we’d all have to be from the same area?

This was true during the early years of the war! They were called 'Pal's battalions' and they were made up of soldiers from a single town or area. However, these were split up in the later years because often whole battalions were wiped out, and that meant that all the men from a single region died at once. So in 1918, when our story takes place, most men will be from different towns.

Yes, there is one commander (my character, the 2nd Lieutenant) supported by a platoon sergeant. The platoon is made up of four fire teams, each headed by a sergeant. Each platoon has a lewis gun as well.

Application: The Sun Never Sets

Name: Cédric C. Lagare
Age: 16
Place of residence: Oxfordshire, England
Previous occupation: Student
Personal relations:
  • Christia Lagare (Mother, presumed deceased)
  • Gendron Lagare (Father, deceased)
  • George Nathaniel Curzon (Adoptive Father)
  • Maria Lagare (Younger Sister, presumed deceased)
Biography:
Cédric born in the Compiègne region of North-Eastern France, to a Catholic, prestigious and well-recognised university family. When the great Teutonic migration crossed through Belgium into France, Cédric's father, Gendron Lagare, had him shipped to a friend in Oxford, England, to Lord Curzon, then Chancellor of Oxford University, where Cédric subsequently studied (but was not enrolled). He aimed to specialise in Theology and developed a nicotine addiction. The rest of Cédric's family did not emigrate, and while Gendron Lagare was declared KIA after having been conscripted into the French military, the status of Cédric's sister and mother is currently unknown. Cédric was constantly ridiculed as a coward by his classmates for seemingly fleeing from combat and leaving his family behind. Cédric enlisted into the British Infantry in late 1917 after being shamed by his girlfriend when she handed him a white feather, symbolising cowardice. Lord Curzon, upon learning that his adoptive son had enlisted, insisted that his son be recommended for a commission, rather than request his release from the army for being underage, as it benefited his social standing. He arranged for the Headmaster of the University and the Lord Mayor of Oxfordshire to support the application. The army rejected the application but Cédric was fast-tracked as a 1st Class Warrant Officer by February of 1918.

First impression:
Cédric is immediately far too young for his rank and is constantly smoking. He is short and lean for the front, and comes across as arrogant and rude to seemingly compensate for his inexperience. He speaks with a soft French accent.

Personality:
Talkative and constantly wanting to be occupied, Cédric has been described by his classmate as a "German Shepard" who steps into a room, accesses the situation, and figures out who is good company, who to approach, and when to listen. He still keeps study textbooks with him, denoting his student background and plans to return to schooling. Cédric hates the mud, dirt, and grit, and believes that infantry work is beneath him.

Hobbies: Chess, Prayer, Smoking Cigarettes.
Likes: France, French culture, French firearms, French officers.
Dislikes: Britain, British culture, British firearms, British officers.
Rank: Second Lieutenant
Weapons: Star Model 1914, Mle 1916 Berthier Rifle.

Application: The Sun Never Sets

Name: Charles Blackwell
Age: 20
Place of residence: Oxford, Oxfordshire
Previous occupation: Student
Personal relations:
    Daniel Blackwell (father, 40)
    Victoria Blackwell (mother, 30)
    James Blackwell (brother, 19)
    Elizabeth Blackwell (sister, 16)
    Beatrice Reuel (fiancée, 19)
Biography: Charles Blackwell was born the eldest son to Daniel Blackwell, a respectable watchmaker settled near Oxford. He spent a rather uneventful childhood in the countryside, of which he has fond memories. His father exposed him to as much wisdom and lore as he could, which Charles devoured eagerly. Soon, a great interest for the industrial machinations alongside the martial aspects of the Empire took root in his heart, which spiked with the beginning of the War. In him boiled the fervent patriotism of youth, but his father reminded him of his fiancée, his family, and convinced him to stay until the end of his studies. Months passed by and the country called again, but his father – fearing the loss his first-born – insisted that he should pursue a scholarship at Oxford, to which Charles begrudgingly agreed. When England issued another call for another offensive, Charles answered despite his family's complaints, and was thus shipped off to the continent. Besides, he wasn't going to be spared from conscription eternally.
After a short period of training and drilling, Charles was kept in a rear-echelon position where he aided with logistics. He was recently shifted to the frontlines, and is quite anxious despite his earlier enthusiasm. He has smelt the foul vapours of war, but has yet to wallow in their taint.
First impression: Charles may come across as a reserved, polite and humble man. He saves his words and only speaks after careful consideration, as if his breath were a precious and held great consequence. Nevertheless, he is able to entertain a decent conversation on a wide range of subjects with a wide range of people.
Personality: If one is to look deeper into Charles’ heart, one would realize that he is a peculiar man, caught in the crossroads between idealism and cynicism. All his life, he has learned to be patient, to love the countryside alongside its slow idyllic life, yet now he is being charmed by industry, speed and the machine. He has always thought highly of his country, of the men who fought for it, but now that he is one of them, the tales he heard from the front are worrying. He is an uncertain man in uncertain times, but that won't prevent him from attempting to be a fine man, a moral man.
Hobbies: Anything done with paper or machines. Shooting also pleases him greatly, though generally not at other people
Likes: English weather, English drinks, good music, the countryside, machinery.
Dislikes: Snakes, wasting time, dry weather.

Honestly, that doesn't sound too bad. We've seen this largescale type of apocalypse done time and time again, and I'd like to see something a bit more centered around the players. A Deathwatch style roleplay would be refreshing.

It was the first thing I thought of when I saw the title, even if I hope the our characters aren't going to get picked off by barbwire and rats. I would prefer a grander type of apocalypse.

Honestly, that doesn't sound too bad. We've seen this largescale type of apocalypse done time and time again, and I'd like to see something a bit more centered around the players. A Deathwatch style roleplay would be refreshing.

I don't really see Deathwatch as an apocalypse tale. For me, the situation is more of an allegory for purgatory, although I guess one could call it a personal apocalypse. As long as the Germans haven't turned into zombies I'll be fine with whatever OP decides to throw at us.
