Much is at stake in the Kingdom of Tarinia. Tarinia, located on the continent of Rinin, is the world’s superior power, and has established its dominance through its military and naval might. Rinin itself was a peninsula connected to the continent of Emura, however, Rinin was the world’s most technologically advanced area, and the only one where guns and firearms were widely used. After going through a long period of war and lack of innovation, known simply as the Dark Ages, Rinin reemerged as the world’s center for technological advancement, with Tarinia leading the way. It was in this time period that the arts have started to flourish again, and the great explorers of the continent have even found a brand new world far out west.

Within Tarinia was a change of leadership. The Tarinian throne belonged to the Sixurid Dynasty for nearly three centuries before a man, Louis Teborg, amassed a large army and took the throne, declaring himself the king of the powerful country in the process. After just a year of his reign, King Louis I died, with the inability to produce a male heir. This left his only child, his 26 year old daughter Sophie to become coronated as Queen Sophie I. Now that Queen Sophie has taken the throne, Tarinia’s future is looking promising and extremely dynamic.

Sophie has taken the throne amid a massive cultural shift in Rinin. Calls for the end of absolute monarchies around the world and the adaptation of a new system, the parliamentary system, run rampant. Many countries of Rinin, including Tarinia have begun colonizing faraway lands in the New World, as well as strengthening ties with neighbors outside of the continent. Rinin, and especially Tarinia’s use of firearms made going to war with and conquering the primitive natives child’s play. Tarinia’s economic boom has contributed to its assertion of dominance over many of its neighbors, creating many enemies. The world is at crossroads, as the year 1600 fast approaches. The new Queen came with many advisors, ministers, and palace staff. Tension runs high, as advisors and ministers clash, for the Queen’s approval as well as making their inner visions for Tarinia come true. Outside the walls of the palace, increased calls for a democratic parliamentary system are heard, while the New World is quickly being contested over.

OOC: This is a political RP where you can play as one of the Queen’s many advisors, ministers, a high ranking military person, explorer/New World colonist, member of the royal family, other nobility, basically anything related to the renaissance politics of Tarinia. While the countries and the world here are fantasy, as you might have guessed, the continent of Rinin is basically Europe, the New World being the New World IRL, and Emura being Asia. The RP starts in IRL 1595, you can gauge the technology from there. Royal politics of the renaissance have always interested me, and this RP hopes to simulate this in a fantasy-but-not-so-fantasy world.

Just to clarify: a parlement is different from a parliament. A parlement is a legal body which has to register royal decrees, historically in absolutist France. The historical parlements did their best to try and stop centralisation of monarchical power. They could do this by not registering a law, which forced the king to give a written response to their complaints. If the parlement then failed to register the law again, the king could show up in person to force registration. Historically, the parlements were also courts of appeal. They held a pivotal role in the way renaissance France was run.

Short Bio: The House of Matris, originally the counts of Matris, has a long and proud martial tradition. Ever since count Henry II of Matris was given the title of duke for his service in the royal army, his uninterrupted line of male heirs has attained the rank of general and lead at least one field army during a campaign. The heirlooms of the family consists of many spoils and treasures gained in war, as well as many honours and titles bestowed upon them for their valour. It is said that the Matris family reaches for the stars, and by lack of wings to take to the sky just satisfies itself with the stars of command. Isaac III, duke of Visgôle and father of James, fought in the name of the Sixurid dynasty, and attained the rank of honorary marshal of the fatherland in that capacity.

James Henry Isaac Matris is nothing like his forefathers. As the third son of Isaac III, he was not expected to ever become duke. His oldest brother Henry was supposed to take the position, but after being duke for three years, he joined the Teborgist coup. He commanded a secondary force to cut off the road leading down from Gongia to stop the loyalist Army of the North from reinforcing the capital. While his force managed to delay the army long enough for Teborg to take control of the city, Henry was killed while personally commanding a redoubt. He was given a state funeral for his valour. Isaac, next in line, was a naval captain, and his fleet remained loyal to the Sixurid dynasty. They could not stop the takeover, however, and when Teborg raised his banner above the city the fleet sided with him. However, Isaac could not in good conscience become duke, as politics forbade him, so he renounced his claims to the duchy. That left James to become duke.

James had never trained in warfare or commerce, though. He had studied law in both Tarinia and Sasia, being mostly interested in property law and legal history, as well as church law. He became a legal scholar, writing a few books before entering the service of the Sixurid dynasty as a judge. He rose through the ranks and was eventually named to the parlement as one of its members. James had always stood in the shadow of his brothers, and he never thought he could do something great, although the stories of ancient heroes inspired in him some level of ambition. That was, until his brother died and his other brother renounced his title. Suddenly, he was in command of vast resources from his lands in Visgôle. He used that money for a political campaign. Due to the political upheaval there was a shake-up in almost every level of society, and the old head of parlement was beheaded for suspected treason shortly after Teborg assumed the throne. James managed to take over, and strove for a fair but loyal support of the new king Louis. When the king died, he saw his opportunities shift. He saw a chance to end the growing centralisation, which was taking more and more power from the landed aristocracy. He saw it as his duty to revive the old ways of feudalism, for which he is constantly plotting.

In addition, Earl Leichter is also in charge of managing the public image of the royal family, and is the chief enforcer of laws against lese majeste, his private military units possessing the authority to dispose of seditious materials from the royal archives and to arrest potential threats to the authority of the royal family.
  
• Governor of Curoi, Chief Administrator of the Earldom of Fragarach: In addition to his role in the central government, Earl Leichter also governs the territory of Fragarach along the east coast, a region that holds the rank of an earldom despite its small size due to its strategic location at the tip of the peninsula closing off the bay of Gongia and Derland. As governor of Curoi, the capital of Fragarach and one of eastern Tarinia’s most preeminent ports, Earl Leichter enjoys a privileged position as an administrator who holds significant sway over the kingdom’s mercantile economy.

True intention

• To forge closer ties with the Voivodeship of Egresi across the eastern ocean. The Earldom of Fragarach had long maintained ties with the Voivodeship, but the incumbent Earl Leichter seeks to strengthen this bond further, such that Fragarach may obtain a new weapon from the Egresians: the breech-loaded rifle. While ostensibly to offer better and more efficient protection for the royal household, it is also highly likely that Earl Leichter intends to upgrade his armoury so as to hold greater leverage over his fellow lords.
  
• To expand the influence of the Earldom, in the hopes that it may receive a promotion to a Marquisate (and thus allow for greater internal autonomy).

Roland Albeinian Leichter succeeded his father, Albein Theodorian Leichter, as the Earl of Fragarach and the Minister of the Royal Household three years ago, at the age of 43; his ascension to power came at roughly the same time as the coronation of Sophie I, a period when the kingdom was undergoing a process of change and quickened evolution. His position had, in a sense, already been shored up for him by his predecessors. His mother was a scion of House Fabien, a preeminent clan of knights that had pledged its allegiance to House Leichter through the marriage of their daughter to Earl Albein Leichter, and his grandmother, the widowed wife of the late Theodore Justinian Leichter, was a member of House Armand-Delano, one of the most powerful mercantile families in East Tarinia. By the time of his ascension, the new Earl Leichter was poised to climb higher than his father and grandfather ever had.

Nevertheless, when his administrative prowess was displayed, whatever winds of opposition to the new Earl Leichter’s leadership soon dissipated, and the members of the family soon rallied closely around Roland as they had with his predecessors.

As Minister of the Royal Household, Earl Leichter saw to it that Sophie I received the protection and care she deserved as the newly crowned Queen of Tarinia. He oversaw the creation of the Guardian Brigade, a private military force dedicated solely to the protection of the royal family and to the elimination of any potential threats to their sovereignty. Making use of his numerous mercantile connections, Earl Leichter was able to provide the royal family with a wide range of exotic foods and textiles not commonly available even to those of status, further shoring up his position within the central government and ensuring his reputation as a capable administrator and a reliable aide to the Queen and the royal family.

It was on his son Steiner Rolandian Leichter’s 18th birthday in the year 1595, however, that Earl Leichter’s ambition began to grow even beyond his present role and the borders of Tarinia. Short Bio: Jackson was born to a colonel and a seamstress. His father gladly supported King Louis and founded the House of Scott as he became closer to the king. Jackson had joined the military years before King Louis came to power, but he was assigned to the King's Guard and rose the ranks to become the Captain.
