The Dark Tablets (Urban Fantasy/OOC)

Long ago, the gods created the earth...the place that was to be the new world which all their hopes and dreams would reside, and so they created man in order to spread that dream of blooming life and filling what was then the pitch-black, formless Void. Man was an adaptable and intelligent animal, he would look after this domain and cultivate this world, bringing light to the darkness.. But there was a second side to the Void, a side which was still formless and faceless...to fill this side, the gods spun what was then known as the Aether, a substance that thrummed in the very air around them, a substance made with their own divine essence. This essence was spun into the very first supernatural creatures, werewolves and merfolk and the like. These creatures would exist to show the might and wonder of the gods’ power, while man would be the embodiment of their more nurturing and humble side. All was in balance, as things should be and for a long time, the natural and supernatural co-existed in harmony...until the fear of the unknown reared it’s ugly head and a war sparked. This world was was tearing itself apart in chaos, and the gods knew that they needed to do something about it quickly, so they created the witches.

Witches had the shapes and faces of men, but are chosen by the gods to protect the balance between the natural (normal, everyday human) world and the supernatural (magical) worlds by protecting humans from creatures and creatures from humans. They were created as the gods know that they cannot get involved all the time, or else their creations would never learn to do for themselves so they remain distant for the most part, necessitating the witches' creation. They work magic because of a divine spark (known as the Deva Spark) put inside them at birth by the gods...this divine spark allows one to manipulate the invisible force known as the Aether from which all reality springs, thus creating magic...up until then, humans didn’t have such power but the witches had one foot in both worlds, thus enabling them to maintain the balance. They also lived extraordinarily long lives due to being semi-divine, hundreds and sometimes up to thousands of years. They were the gods’ agents, and as such they often were in the role of healer, protector, advisers to kings...positions where they could reach the most people.
Witches and humans used to live in harmony for a while, until the humans began to fear the witches’ power and started executing them, the same humans that the witches were meant to protect...this came in full force with the advent of Christianity. The witches were pushed to the fringes of society until they were written off as mere religion or myth and their existence mostly forgotten. Over the centuries, they have begun regrouping themselves into a semi-organized force again, but divided into four main factions over differing opinions.
The first faction is called the Humanists, witches looking for a way to live openly in peace among the humans again. They truly believe that witches can blend into society once more, and that education about magic and witches is the best way to achieve this by creating understanding, holding fast to the gods' original purpose for them as teachers, guides, keepers of the balance.
The second faction, called the Guardians wants revenge and wants to kill or subjugate humanity for their past sins involving the witches. They believe that they are the "guardians" of magic and that in order to protect all of witch-kind, humans must be dealt with as they are a danger to things that they do not know. Very few Guardians actively hunt humans anymore, but there are still some out there that do. Surprisingly, they are not against human-witch intermarriage, instead seeing it as a way to "breed them out" and create more witches.
The third faction calls themselves the Whispers, as they wish to be quiet and unassuming like a whisper. Secretive and hidden, this group of witches thinks that they should just keep to themselves and live quietly. That it's best to live as they are now, with humans and witches ignoring each other as this is the way to protect both sides from another war. They are vehemently against human/witch relations, as they believe that such things would disrupt the balance.
The fourth and final faction are known as the Ring, a group of militant witches who wish to conquer and reign over the two worlds, believing that humans are too fearful and almost childlike, and thus cannot rule themselves. They started off as an offshoot of the Guardians but broke away as they did not believe in the bloody methods of just killing humans and instead preferred a benevolent dictatorship of sorts. The Ring believes that forcibly bringing both worlds together is the best option, with witches at the top to keep the weaker humans in check. Locking everything together in one perfectly balanced circle, or "ring" is their dogma, and all four factions have tense relations among each other as they can never agree on anything, so they continued live in hiding (mostly) and the balance remained, although tenuous at best. Things between the four factions are starting to come to a head, only remaining in check by the need to protect the balance...until recently.

It is the year 2019, and somewhere in the swirling sands of the Nubian desert, a human archaeological team stumbles upon something that humans never should have. Something that was rumored to have been destroyed long ago, but now has been uncovered to terrible light. An unassuming set of ancient Meroitic tablets has recently been put into the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C, but there's something different about these tablets. These tablets were long ago used by a group of powerful Kushite witches to seal the ancient demon Arsaban, a fallen god who was cast down for teaching the humans dark magic, plotting to use them to reign over heaven and earth. The gods, with the help of these Kushite witches managed to seal him away deep underground, inscribing the seal onto a set of clay tablets in such a rare form of Meroitic that only those who knew it could even think about unbinding that seal. All native speakers of that particular form are said to have died out with the Kushite empire over three thousand years ago, but with all the digging the scientists are doing and with the advent of modern technology, the fact that somebody could decipher these tablets and unleash this evil is a very real possibility. Also with the unearthing of these tablets, every power-hungry witch for miles will be trying to get their hands on them. If Arsaban is unleashed once more, neither human nor witch nor anyone in between will be safe.

Players will be taking the role of one of these witches in Seattle, Washington, and you will decide whether you will help in the quest to destroy the tablets, take them for yourself or try to stay as neutral as possible in this conflict. Also, you will most likely be competing for the advancement of your coven or faction in the process. A coven is a group of witches who practice magic together and most of the time even live together...those in a coven tend to have more access to knowledge and can learn from their mates, as such coven witches tend to be stronger than solo witches. You may even wish to try to become the Supreme, the most powerful witch in the generation and the one who rules over the Magi Council, the governing body of witches consisting of the Supreme, the heads of the four main factions and the heads of the world's major covens. Will you use your magic for good? Evil? Just dick around with it? Or perhaps even try to get rid of it so you can live a normal life, the choice is all up to you.



Magic System:
Magic is cast through manipulation of the Aether, the very fabric of reality spun by the gods themselves. When this fabric is stretched, twisted or pulled by magic, it alters the shape of reality itself with some spells creating temporary kinks that straighten out when the spell ends, or some permanent spells creating permanent shifts in the fabric. However, there are limitations to what one can do...if the Aether is pulled or broken to the point where it tears, catastrophic results often occur. Some carry the Dark Spark, placed inside of them by demonic forces instead of divine ones, giving them considerable power over dark magic. These dark witches are usually evil but not always, just like not all Deva witches are good (bcuz I find the idea of an all evil or all good race to be super boring). In EXTREMELY rare cases, some witches are born from a mixing of bloodlines and have what is known as the Grey Spark, a mixture of divine and demonic. There are only a handful of Grey Spark witches in existence, and they are known to be among some of the most powerful of their kind. But they also have (slightly watered down) weaknesses of both Deva Spark (divine) or Dark Spark witches, giving it balance. Dark Spark witches are weak to holy items and hallowed ground, Deva Spark witches are weak to corrupted items or demonic presence, making it extremely difficult (but not impossible) for many to wield the other type of magic, but the opposite type of magic you're predisposed to is hard to learn and in many cases painful to perform. Both types of witches are also bound by the forces that gave them that spark, they are bound by an the laws of said god or demon and cannot utilize their full magical potential until this oath has been given. If they act outside of that oath or break the terms, their magic will fail to work or in worst case scenario turn inward against them.

The Law of Equivalent Exchange is essential in necromancy, if one wishes to bring the dead back to life, another person must be sacrificed. The balance must be maintained at all costs, so to summon a soul from the dead, another soul must take that soul's place...as such, necromancy is a forbidden school of magic, although that doesn't stop some from trying to dabble in it anyway.

Life Energy Storage Wand
A Faerie Witch can store years worth of multiple persons' life energy in a wand (or other suitable container) and use it like a credit card for the goods and services of other faerie beings. Often the witch takes the energy from one or more sleeping mortals or the life energy can be willingly surrendered by a mortal to a witch as part of a contract.

Faerie messengers are quite inexpensive and transportation faeries cost a little bit more. Faeries to combat a summoner's foes are pricey and dragons are..., DANGEROUS.

List of favorite Dark Spark Faerie Creatures to Warp-Summon:
Messengers: Sylphs (elemental air sprites), appearing like tiny beautiful humanoids with (sharp) insect wings.
Transportation: Näcken (a shape-shifting water spirit, typically appearing as a horse) and Nightmare (a spectral horse).
Combatants: Goblins (when you just need a little help), Redcaps (when you need things to die) and Ogres (for the big problems).
Dragons: ONLY IN THE MOST DIRE CASES AND ALSO ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE A MASSIVE BRIBE TO OFFER THEM!!!

Kaziimar, thanks for the acceptance and comment. I think maybe I would like to add some small trinkets or very minor magical artifacts/tools.

Also, on the summoning of dark faerie creatures, I'm thinking of a short list, with very minor beings automatically inclined to obey her and powerful monsters working for her on promises of some type of payment.

I will telegram you and we can add to the app after we've worked it out

Lightning Magic: Karina is skilled with the usage of Lightning. Using the Aether, she can manipulate the fabric to the point that it creates an electrical current. This is her only form of magic, but due to her extreme focus on it, she decided to maximize its potential. She organized the power into three distinct categories:

Lightning Spark Enhancement (LSE): Using the power of the Aether to create lightning, Karina can completely envelop herself in lightning, resulting in increased speed, reflexes, agility, and strength. The power has two sublevels. The Subtle Enhancement, which grants her peak athletic skill at all times, and the Full Enhancement, which puts her Deva Spark at maximum pressure to make the most use of its power. The Full Enhancement can only be used for a few minutes before Karina tires herself out, and begins to suffer from pain as the enhancement loses its effect. Using the Full Enhancement results in immobilization and extensive injuries to herself as her body attempts to heal.

Flight: Karina uses Lightning to propel herself into the sky with high speeds.

Healing: Lightning Magic also has the effect of speeding up the body's natural healing process, allowing Karina to recover from small wounds in seconds, and severe ones in a matter of weeks.

Sexual orientation : Asexual

Bio (a detailed paragraph will do): Karina was born two millenniums ago, in a world drastically different than the one she currently resides in. Like all other witches, Karina was born with spark, and in her case, she was a human endowed with a Deva Spark. She grew up in the outskirts of the Roman Empire during the reign of Tiberus. As she grew older, she realized her purpose and began using her magic to protect the innocent from the military conquests and battles near them. She would come down and attack, and leave as quickly as she came, which led to her gaining the name "Fulgora", the same name as the Roman goddess of lightning. She spent her years going in and out of the empire, and saw the vices of humanity, which especially noticeable during the reigns of Nero and Caligula. Her beliefs started to become far more extreme as time went on, eventually leading to her joining the Ring.

The centuries in the aftermath of the Roman collapse allowed Karina to focus on the outside world more, and while she definitely had no love for regular humans, she was by no means aligning with the Guardians. She ended up in several battles with witches from the Guardian faction as their ideals clashed. She temporarily left the Ring a few hundred years later, effectively living as a witch akin to the Whispers. But with the discovery of the Meroitic tablets and her knowledge of what they mean, she emerged from the shadows.

Strengths: Wise/knowledgeable due to her age, and very potent with various spells regarding the usage of lightning.
Weaknesses: Very judgmental and arrogant. Karina is also quick to attack and thinks later. Her arrogance and impulsiveness gets the best of her. Also, due to the nature of her powers, she cannot use lightning directly on her bare hands. This means she must wear non conductive gloves with a spell inscribed on it to avoid self injury
Goals: To eventually become the Sorcerer Supreme and lead the world

Portal: Can open a door sized portal to any place she has been before. The portal stays open for five seconds before it closes. Only one portal can be open at one time and it takes a minute before a new one can be opened.
Mind Scramble: Causes temporary confusion and a mild headache. The target must be in line of sight and less than one meter away.
Blood Magic: At the cost of some blood, physical attributes can be improved and various temporary shapes can be formed out of blood. The larger and longer the effect, the more blood it requires. Most power achieved with the caster's blood.

Bio (a detailed paragraph will do):
Driven from their homeland of Japan for their consorting with demons, Ayumi's great grandparents eventually settled in the Seattle area and tried to reestablish their family's lost power. Using a forbidden spell power by the blood of many unfortunate sacrifices, her great grandparents bound their bloodline into servitude to a powerful oni, named Hidetsugu, in exchange for greater magical power. Throughout the years the oni made many gruesome requests of the Takenuma family, who obediently followed its devilish desires until Ayumi's father had a change of heart. He became disgusted by the evil acts the oni forced upon him and fled his family's home and used magic to hide himself from the oni's sight. He eventually settled down in New England, where he married a local witch. When Ayumi was born, her parents tried their best to protect her from prying demonic influences and when she grew up, they forbade her from using the blood magic she inherited from her father. Like most teenagers, she ignored her parents and tried experimenting with blood magic and the rush of power it gave her. Through her magical experimentation, the oni was able to find her and ordered the Takenuma's still loyal to it to capture her and use her as bait to capture her wayward father. Ayumi easily escaped her pursuers with her portal magic, but her family was forced to flee their home to a more secluded location in the Swamps of Florida. After Ayumi learned the truth behind her cursed blood, she decided to try to make a deal with the devil to free her and her descendants from their bloody bondage. After realizing he could not capture her, the oni Hidetsugu decided to forge a new deal with Ayumi and gave her 8 Herculean tasks to win her freedom.
Strengths: Mobility, easy escapes, hit-and-run attacks.
Weaknesses: Anemia from blood magic use. Forced into quests from demon benefactor.
Goals: Pay off her families blood debt and make enough cash to live in luxury.

Her curly black hair is often tied back in a braid or ponytail with a wide silver streak going down the whole length, and she has a round face with a distinctive scar on her upper lip, upturned dark eyes and a short, round nose.
Species (any supernatural creature or spark-touched human can be a witch): Cambion (half-demon)
Age: 1,450 years old.
Magical Spells/Abilities: (go with any spell as long as you balance it out): She's accumulated a huge variety of spells over the years, but she's best known for summoning, protection, banishment and illusion spells...usually cast by drawing sigils (magical circles) as well as her devastating elemental attacks. It's said that she even dabbles in necromancy, although nobody's found any proof of this. She also turns into a raven as a form of spying and transportation.
Sexual orientation (optional): Bisexual
Bio (a detailed paragraph will do): Born in the Kingdom of Aksum almost 1500 years ago, Diarra was the daughter of an Aksum princess who had been dabbling in sorcery. This princess was the illegitimate daughter of the Aksum king, and grew up in the splendor of her father's palace. She was bright but sickly, her health not considered good enough for marriage so she decided to help her father's kingdom in another way, by honing her knowledge in the magical arts. When a rival kingdom made war on them, Diarra's mother summoned a powerful demon lord in order to repel the advance. He repelled the advance, and took his payment (which was the princess' chastity as they had agreed upon). Due to this union, Diarra was born. She was treated like any other child, although her paternity was of course hidden from the rest of the world outside of the family. She grew up beautiful and bright, and unlike her mother she was in good health. When Diarra was old enough, she learned sorcery from her mother and eventually decided to leave the kingdom in the pursuit of knowledge. Over the centuries she's been traveling around the world learning as much magic as she could, eventually settling down in Seattle and forming a coven known as The Star for the five points of elemental power from the pentagram. She's been fairly neutral in the conflict between humans and witches, preferring not to get involved instead of just doing her own thing. However, now that this ancient evil could be released and the tablets found, she feels that she can no longer stay neutral and wants to see the tablets destroyed before it's too late.
Strengths: Her magical knowledge, her resolve to do what's best for her coven and herself...her ability to blend in.
Weaknesses: Silver, crucifixes, and other holy items due to her cambion parentage. Wanting to stay out of conflict too much can also be detrimental.

I left most of them unnamed to allow for more player room, but the leader of the Humanists is a man named Isaac. He's half-human which kind of explains his sentiments, but besides that I didn't really think about the leaders much. You can make Karina the head of the Ring if you'd like.

Max however, was stolen from the family by Humanists before the spark could be embedded into him. Instead, he was given a Deva spark, and raised by a foster family in America to be a protector of humanity. Raised to be an enemy of the Guardians, Max had a very clear world view until one day he was found by his sister Megan. Megan had been searching for him for years, and revealed to Max his origin. She was relieved to find him still alive, but dismayed to see he had been brain washed by those arrogant and naive Humanists.When he came over to their side she thought her family would finally be reunited until he betrayed them and returned to his so called "home" in America. Betrayed and hurt, Megan has made it her personal mission to hunt down Max once more. This time, she has no intention of asking him nicely to return home.

Prior to Amanita entering the building where the meeting with the Supreme is taking place, Amanita will ask the doorman to communicate who she is and who she represents to the master or mistress of the house. Then Amanita will ask if she is welcome to enter. If the master/mistess, or doorman/guard invites Amanita, she will enter, knowing that the laws of hospitality (at least on the Faerie side) have been met and she ought to be safe. She may even go so far as to verbally joust with a guard, getting him to explicitly say that she is a guest.

Magical Spells/Abilities:
Explosion and Fire Magic: Arlo's signature ability is fire, and more specifically, creating explosions. He shoots fire out both hands, but can only use his Explosion Magic in his right.
Hellhound Summoning: Arlo can summon a creature he calls Cerberus. Like the traditional one in greek mythology, Cerberus is a a three headed dog with a serpent tail. Cerberus is capable of shooting fire out of all three heads, and can change its size from that of an elephant.

Astral Projection: Simply a way of reconnaissance, Arlo's Astral projection was made not to engage in combat, but to be able to leave his side for some time. The time limit is 5 minutes
Flight: Arlo is capable of using the Aether to propel himself into the skies
Disease Resistance: While not exactly a magical ability, it most likely was created due to his Dark Spark recognizing his fears and forming a barrier to shield him from deadly pathogens
Sexual orientation (optional): Asexual
Bio (a detailed paragraph will do): Arlo Barotovi was born to French family in the year 1339, two years after the start of the legendary Hundred Years' War. His early years were unremarkable and typical of a medieval child. At least, it was normal until the outbreak of the bubonic plague in 1348. His immediate family and relatives caught the disease and later died brutal deaths. Arlo caught the plague himself by 1350, but fortunately he survived. Not too long afterwards, he awakened his latent magical power as thousands around him died, both from the war and the plague. The next few decades resulted in Arlo joining the french army before eventually being recruited by the Guardians. After learning more about his powers and the history of witches, Arlo became furious with normal humans. To further complicate matters, Arlo's childhood was dominated by war and the plague, as he saw the worst of humanity. He became obsessed with wiping out humans, and this lead him into conflict with Karina Allegrodo of the Ring. He was defeated and barely lived to tell the story, know seeking revenge against her for his humiliation.
Strengths: Resistant to many human diseases
Weaknesses: In order to properly use his explosion magic safely, Arlo must always have the demonic protection spells in effect. He's weak to holy items and places
Goals: Eradication or total subjugation of all humans
